With a plucky, inherent likability as a performer that extends to his leisurely directorial aesthetic, Michael Angarano’s second feature Sacramento is an amiable, freewheeling road trip dramedy that rides on its central performances, courtesy of Michael Cera and the actor-writer-director as strained best friends. In exploring fatherhood, mental health, and the lies we tell ourselves (and others) to keep trucking along, Angarano and co-writer Chris Smith haven’t uncovered a wealth of revelations on tried-and-true thematic ground, yet there’s just enough smart comedic timing and dramatic perceptiveness to make this an adventure worth taking.
Experiencing more anxiety about the impending birth of his child than his wife Rosie (Kristen Stewart), Cera’s Glenn needs an excuse to unwind from the mounting mental and physical preparations. Despite Glenn being in the process of “phasing out” his untrustworthy, sporadically attentive best friend, Rickey (Angarano) shows up in his back lawn,...

Teresa Palmer, the Australian actress known for her roles in Warm Bodies, Hacksaw Ridge, I Am Number Four, Bedtime Stories, and Take Me Home Tonight, is 5 feet 4 inches (162.6 cm) tall and wears a shoe size 7 (US).
While she now stuns in designer heels on the red carpet, Palmer humorously recalls her younger years as a self-proclaimed “socks and sandals girl,” admitting, “I was so dorky up until I was about 14 or 15 and started to get a little bit cooler, but I was a socks and sandals girl. I would wear big frilly socks with sandals and all the kids would tease me.” Her evolution from quirky childhood fashion to high-fashion footwear highlights her journey into Hollywood glamour.

Aubrey Plaza Honors Late Husband Jeff Baena on ‘SNL50’ in First Public Appearance at Since His Death
Aubrey Plaza made her first public appearance since the death of her husband Jeff Baena on Saturday Night Live‘s 50th anniversary special.
During the special, which aired Sunday night on NBC, Plaza, who was once an intern on SNL, briefly appeared to introduce musical guests Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard. However, it was what Plaza was wearing that caught the attention of fans. Along with her dress pants and a blazer, Plaza wore a tie-dye shirt which served as a tribute to her late husband. The reason the tie-dye shirt was so notable was due to Plaza’s previous comments about how the couple wore tie-dye for their spontaneous nuptials.
During a 2021 interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, Plaza had said that the two “got married on a whim” and that tie-dyeing was a hobby Baena grew interested in during the pandemic.

The filmmaker died by suicide on Friday in his Los Angeles home, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
Baena’s breakthrough came when he co-wrote I Heart Huckabees (2004) alongside director David O. Russell. The film, nominated for the Gotham Award for best feature, followed two “existential detectives” who strive to solve the meaning of a series of strange coincidences.

While most people probably know Jake Johnson from Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse or as Nick Miller in New Girl, the actor has subtly become a major player in the world of indie comedies over the past 15+ years. Not only has Johnson starred in films like Safety Not Guaranteed and Drinking Buddies, as well as appearing in underrated movies like Ceremony, The End of Love, and Joshy, Johnson has also written his fair share of films, collaborating with Joe Swanberg on Digging for Fire and Win It All, and most recently, co-writing 2021’s Ride the Eagle.

Zakiya Dalila Harris’ novel “The Other Black Girl” has hit the small screen in ten episodes filled with songs that support the story’s underlying message of compromising identity and Blackness in a majority-white workplace. Developed by Harris and Rashida Jones, who contributed the intro montage, to Episode 7 set to Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love,” the series crosses multiple genres from comedy to thriller and provides social commentary on how minority Poc employees compromise and navigate the social system of corporate America.
Set to Sza, TLC, Busta Rhymes, H.E.R., Janelle Monae and more, many scenes in the show become even stronger with the songs in the background. Co-showrunners Gus Hickey and Jordan Reddout left the ending open for a potential second season. The suspense and humor go hand in hand with the soundtrack for “The Other Black Girl.”

An auteur comedy which revolves around the question of whether it’s possible to build a lasting, loving relationship in a society which tends towards immediacy and individualism, the filmmaker (highly acclaimed for his short films The Testicle in 2015 and Villa Graciosa in 2017) has in this instance united Thomas Ngijol and Judith Chemla...

You can almost envision a conventional rendering of Mark Webber’s enchanting “The Place of No Words,” the writer-director’s fifth and most ambitiously scoped feature. In that scenario, the magical journey through which a three-year-old grapples with his father’s terminal illness — something he is too young to make sense of in real-world terms — would be adorned with vivid colors and on-the-nose emotions aimed at tear ducts. Conceived through a personal lens, “The Place of No Words” thankfully takes the completely opposite approach. While occasionally wearisome in its fragmented structure (and limited in its commercial appeal), Webber’s film navigates the vast notion of grief gently and with seriousness.
With its modest intentions, “The Place of No Words” loosely brings to mind David Lowery’s similarly experimental “A Ghost Story,” in a good way — which is to say, those who are patient with its deliberate shapelessness will be eventually...

Film series sheds new light on dynamic movement in Japanese cinema with a selection of overlooked titles, including newly subtitled 35mm prints
New York, NY (February 27, 2019) – With its inception in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Japanese New Wave ushered in a postwar generation of politically engaged and artistically adventurous filmmakers that radically transformed the country’s cinema in theory and practice. "There's a problem - I found another house." Focus Features has debuted a brand new red band trailer for Ciaran Foy's Sinister 2, the sequel to Scott Derrickson's cult horror hit Sinister from 2012. The cast includes: Shannyn Sossamon, James Ransone, Tate Ellington, Lucas Jade Zumann, Caden M. Fritz and Jaden Klein; as well as Nicholas King back as the creepy Bughuul. There's some really dark, messed up stuff in here - watch out. A relentless self-exploration has steered actor and director Mark Webber’s filmmaking output, and increasingly it seems his preferred route of doing so is through quotation marks. Last year’s “The End of Love” starred Webber as “Mark,” an actor struggling in La with his real-life son Isaac, and now—with a new romance and marriage to “Warm Bodies” actress Teresa Palmer—here arrives “The Ever After,” a similarly self-reflexive look at marriage hiding a dark undercurrent of anxiety and abuse. We first glimpse the shores of Australia, and a series of quick cuts as Thomas (Webber) and Ava (Palmer) are wed, go clubbing, and frolic in the sea. A flash-forward then finds the couple years later in Los Angeles, drifted apart—Thomas jetting around U.S. as a fashion photographer, and former actress Ava at home parenting their young daughter. But that now-predictable structure, contrasting the highs and lows of love,...

For the past few years, actor Mark Webber has been a mainstay at film festivals like Sundance and SXSW, appearing in movies that premiered at one or the other, including his first two features as a director, Explicit Ills and The End of Love . Probably his most high profile role to date was playing musician Stephen Stills in Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World , although he's had pivotal roles in a number of other movies as well - Save the Date and For A Good Time Call. are two of my personal favorites in terms of Webber performances. Right now, he can be seen in the thriller 13 Sins , directed by The Last Exorcism 's Daniel Stamm, playing a salesman faced with a baby on the way and insane medical bills for his autistic brother. When he gets a phone call offering...

2014 is here but that doesn't mean the tabulating of 2013 will end just yet. Everyone is still using the holiday season to catch up on the year that was before jumping into the year ahead, and yet another Top 10 is upon us. This time around, it's indie filmmaker Lynn Shelton, who released her own "Touchy Feely" last year, dropping her fave movies of 2013, in no particular order it seems. And as you might guess, the movies that stuck with the filmmaker were more under the radar pictures like the Kathryn Hahn/Juno Temple starring "Afternoon Delight," SXSW hit "Gimme The Loot," Mark Webber's "The End Of Love" and Lake Bell's "In A World." That said, Shelton likes her popcorn just like the rest of us, and gives a thumbs up to Edgar Wright's "The World's End" while also giving some love to Spike Jonze's "Her." Check it all out below.

When I first started preparing my year-end lists for 2013, I knew for certain that I was going to continue my trend of creating one post with my favorite theatrically released narrative films of 2013 and a separate post with my favorite documentary films of 2o13. This is because I have a difficult enough time ranking films that share no common elements other than they were all shot on a medium that can capture both moving images and sound. The ranking of anything (especially art) seems completely arbitrary to me and the fact that most year-end lists focus on the "top" or "best" really makes no sense. While I guess there are certain basic mechanisms of filmmaking that can be done well (thus making a "good" movie) or can be done poorly (thus making a "bad" movie), for the most part it is all just personal opinion. I prefer to approach talking...

A huge ensemble cast of indie vets (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Matthew Gray Gubler, Dane DeHaan, Alia Shawkat, John C. Reilly, Cheryl Hines, Paul Reiser, Molly Shannon). Check. A promising directorial debut from someone who previously made a name for himself with a cult screenplay (I Heart Huckabees). Check. Zombies. Check. You can always count on a horror-comedy to crack the Park City at Midnight line-up and Life After Bet certainly fills in that gap. Filming on Jeff Baena’s debut occurred in July, and recent Afm art proves that they’re deep into the post production phase, so chances are relatively good for a possible January showing. If so, this will be a hot sales item ticket for several indie distribution companies.

Not that it is shrouded in mystery, but Mark Webber has a distinct way of working that might be regarded Cassavetes-like for his realism and making his narratives into true family affairs – we only need to reference The End of Love (Sundance ’12) as a prime example. And speaking of family, Webber reteams with cinematographer Patrice Lucien Cochet and here partners up with Teresa Palmer – the actress and actor are attached at the limb in more than just a creative manner. Filming commenced on The Ever After in Australia earlier in the year and apparently moved from Los Angeles and New York in July and August, which means a rough cut could have been submitted. Webber, Palmer, pint-sized Phoebe Tonkin, Jaime King, Rosario Dawson, Melissa Leo, Joshua Leonard, Tahyna Tozzi, Kid Cudi and Tom Bower are part of the film’s make-up and Before Midnight was such a hit last year...

Writer-director and actor Joe Swanberg has a new film, "Drinking Buddies," currently on VOD and in theaters this August, but that doesn't mean he's taking a summer vacation. He's editing his next film, "Happy Christmas," and has teased out some details about the cast, including the roles played by Anna Kendrick, Lena Dunham and Melanie Lynskey. While promoting "Drinking Buddies," Swanberg told HuffPost Entertainment that the film concerns a young couple (played by Lynskey and Swanberg) whose lives are interrupted by the arrival of an unwelcome house guest, a sister who moves into their basement. Now seen in "Drinking Buddies," Anna Kendrick plays that sister, while Mark Webber -- writer, director and star of 2012's semi-autobiographic "The End of Love" -- portrays the couple's babysitter. Meanwhile, "Girls" creator and star Lena Dunham, currently working on the HBO series' third season, rounds out the cast as a college friend of Kendrick's character.
