Gregory Crewdson: The Aesthetics of Repression (2005)
Rooted in the uncanny, photopraher Gregory Crewdson has mastered a style of eerie realism that portrays the melancholia of American suburbia. His cinematic sets create a unique realm of mise-en-scène, inspired largely by the works of American artists and film directors. Gregory Crewdson: The Aesthetics of Repression observes and questions the photographer during his work on ten new images.

Gregory Crewdson: First and foremost I've always been a photographer, always. When I was 10 years old my father brought me to the Diane Arbus retrospective at the MoMA in 1972, that was like an awakening to me, that was a moment of transformation, and as I walked through each of those pictures they were emblazed on my conciousnous. I think on some intuative level I had a realization that this is what I wanted to do. I think that's one of my earliest encounters with photography and it's sort of photography and psychology coming together.
