American politics may be a nonstop car crash right now, but wrapping “Shifting Gears” Season 1, Kat Dennings sounded hopeful. A self-described “curmudgeon,” the actress returned to the multi-cam format this spring opposite Tim Allen for ABC’s odd-couple comedy — about a father and daughter reuniting from across opposite sides of the aisle.
“I’m not what you call a super positive person,” Dennings told IndieWire after filming the season finale. “I kind of expect the worst, and then I’m pleasantly surprised. I don’t know. It’s a bad tactic. I need therapy. But I wasn’t expecting this kind of harmony on set.”
At 38, Dennings has spent nearly three decades working in film and TV. From playing Samantha Jones’ snottiest client on “Sex and the City” to co-starring in six seasons of the smash-hit “2 Broke Girls” on CBS, the veteran performer has seen her share of episodic productions.

2 Broke Girls star Kat Dennings has addressed revival hopes for the sitcom after its sudden cancellation eight years ago, and whether it can come back. 2 Broke Girls is a female-led sitcom about friends Max Black (Dennings) and Caroline Channing (Beth Behrs), who work at the Williamsburg Diner in Brooklyn trying to make ends meet. Max grew up poor while Caroline grew up rich, becoming a core part of the series' story and jokes. CBS cancelled 2 Broke Girls after season 6, despite its nominations for 12 Emmys during its run and generally high ratings.
Speaking with Deadlineabout her current sitcom on ABC, Shifting Gears, Dennings spoke about 2 Broke Girls' cancellation and whether the sitcom could make a return in the future. She explained that she was open to the prospect, even if the revival happened much like sitcom Will & Grace, which returned over 10 years after it initially ended. She...

Spoiler Alert! This story contains details from the season one finale of Shifting Gears on ABC.
The multi-camera comedy about widower (Tim Allen) who allows his daughter (Kat Dennings) and grandkids to move in wrapped its 10-episode first season March 19. Here, Dennings talks about working with the sitcom veteran, what it’s been like to return in front of a studio audience, and what fans could expect if the show is renewed for a second season.
Deadline Before we get into the finale, I’m not sure you saw but The Wall Street Journal suggests that Shifting Gears is a red state show. What do you think?
Kat Dennings No, I wouldn’t agree with that. I can understand why, because there’s a conservative viewpoint from Tim’s character, but I think the fun of the show is the dynamic between Tim’s character and my character because they have completely opposing viewpoints.

Beth Behrs has reflected on the cancellation of 2 Broke Girls following the final renewal of her current CBS show The Neighborhood. Since 2018, Behrs has starred as Gemma Johnson in the CBS sitcom, which follows her and Dave's (Max Greenfield) move into a predominantly Black neighborhood as a white Midwestern family in Los Angeles. The network recently confirmed that The Neighborhood will end after its eighth season. The Neighborhood season 8 is expected to finish off with Behrs and Greenfield alongside Cedric the Entertainer and Tichina Arnold.
In a post Behrs shared on Instagram, she addressed the final season of The Neighborhood, which offered a different kind of closure compared to the abrupt cancellation of 2 Broke Girls. The 2010s sitcom followed Behrs and Kat Dennings as two struggling waitresses in New York City trying to launch a cupcake business. It ran for six seasons before CBS unexpectedly canceled it in...

2 Broke Girls star Beth Behrs is happy that her latest television sitcom, The Neighborhood, will have a proper send-off. She recently recalled how she and former co-star Kat Dennings did not get the same chance when their show ended.
Behrs starred as Caroline Channing in the CBS comedy 2 Broke Girls, which aired from Sept. 2011 to April 2017. The series ran for six seasons and over one hundred episodes, but declining ratings ultimately led to a surprise cancelation, which didn't give the show's producers the chance to provide closure for any of the characters and story arcs. "I'm just so grateful to [CBS] for a chance to say goodbye to Gemma the right way," Behrs wrote in an Instagram post sharing news of The Neighborhood's, eighth and final season.

Beth Behrs sees a silver lining in The Neighborhood‘s renewal for an eighth but final season.
As the sitcom vet noted on Instagram, her current CBS comedy — which co-stars Cedric the Entertainer, Max Greenfield and Tichina Arnold — now can plan the sort of proper series finale that 2 Broke Girls never got, when it was canceled in May 2017, a full month after its Season 6 finale aired.

Beth Behrs is reflecting on her time on The Neighborhood and is “grateful” to CBS for picking up the sitcom for one final season to properly say goodbye, unlike with 2 Broke Girls.
Behrs’ post comes after the eye network renewed the sitcom she co-stars in with Max Greenfield, Tichina Arnold, and Cedric the Entertainer for an eighth and final season.

Millennials of a certain vintage may know “Deli Boys” creator Abdullah Saeed from his cannabis-related content for Vice, including shows like “Weediquette” and “Bong Appetit.” With his new Hulu sitcom, Saeed has both made the switch to scripted series and upgraded to harder stuff. The namesake protagonists of “Deli Boys,” two spoiled rich kids who suddenly lose their father, are stunned to learn their family legacy isn’t actually a regional chain of Delaware Valley convenience stores: It’s the cocaine smuggling ring for which the delis were just a distribution front.
A crime comedy with a heavy skew toward the comedy, “Deli Boys” sets its unserious tone with the slapstick demise of patriarch Baba Dar (Iqbal Theba), who gushes blood after taking a golf ball to the head as his slack-jawed failsons Mir (Asif Ali) and Raj (Saagar Shaikh) look on in horror. A guest spot on a television sitcom, especially one as insanely popular as "The Big Bang Theory," is basically television law. There's no legally binding mandate, per se, but it would get pretty monotonous if every week followed our series leads with absolutely no one else showing up for a laugh or surprise jolt from the live studio audience. Given the show's primary focus on "geek culture," or rather a heavily commercialized version of such, it makes sense that nerdom heavy hitters like James Earl Jones, Mark Hamill, and Adam West would make an appearance throughout its 12-season run. But then you can't sustain a roster of guest spots without expanding your star power horizons.
The series' 11th and penultimate season saw folks like Kathy Bates, Peter MacNicol, and Jerry O'Connell pop in for a quick hello, but you may be surprised to learn that "Fallout" star Walton Goggins and his beautiful scruff did too.

Marvel Studios has enlisted a lot of A-List actors for the Multiverse Saga, only for the majority of them to be relegated to one-off appearances in post-credits scenes. We're hoping to see more of them down the line, of course, but is another big name now being lined up to join the MCU?
Many of you may remember Jennifer Coolidge best for her roles in the American Pie and Legally Blonde franchises. In recent years, she's received widespread acclaim for her work in HBO's The White Lotus, winning two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe.
Today, scooper @MyTimeToShineH brings word that Coolidge is "being considered for a major role in the MCU." As of now, "It's unclear if she’s had a meeting yet, but they’re interested in meeting with her."
So, it's early days and there's nothing to say the actor will even be interested in boarding the franchise.

Throughout the nearly two and a half decades that she has been a part of Hollywood’s entertainment industry following her debut through Sex and the City in 2000, Kat Dennings has arguably led one of the most commendably successful careers. This includes her becoming a part of some of the most iconic pieces and fan-beloved franchises.
Not only is she a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having starred as Doctor Darcy Lewis in the Thor film series and WandaVision, but she has also played major roles in pieces like 2 Broke Girls, her hit series. These days, Kat Dennings can be seen playing Tim Allen's daughter in the hit ABC series Shifting Gears. However, more than two decades ago, she first played the daughter of late Full House star Bob Saget in a short-lived TV sitcom.
Back in 2001, Dennings and Saget co-starred in Raising Dad, a series that aired on The WB. In a new interview with People, Saget was remembered fondly by Dennings, who recalled how "protective" he had been with her on the set. While decades have since gone by, with Saget sadly passing away in 2022, Dennings has not forgotten the kindness that the legendary funnyman had shown her during the time they worked together on their TV show.

Actress Kat Dennings talked about the tough body image criticism she faced as a young actor and how Hollywood has changed in the last twenty years to become more inclusive and helpful.
In an interview with People magazine, Dennings, who starred in 2 Broke Girls and will appear in the new show Shifting Gears, talked about the harsh comments she received from casting directors when she started her career. When she was just 12 years old, she was told she “wasn’t pretty enough” and was “fat.” These words, passed on by her manager after the auditions, made a strong impact on her.
“Thinking about it was pretty crazy,” Dennings said. “I’m wondering how someone can say that about a young child.” “This is crazy.” The actress started her career in the early 2000s on the WB sitcom Raising Dad, a time she says was not as accepting as the industry is now.

After 25 years of acting, Kat Dennings has seen the entertainment industry become a much more inclusive place.
The Shifting Gears actress recently recalled casting directors being “very cruel” in her early years of acting, despite the fact they were “talking about a child.”
“The time that I was auditioning and starting to act, it was a very different environment than it is now,” she told People. “There was not a lot of inclusivity at all. It was very harsh. There was a lot of extremely negative feedback and people would not hold back.”
Dennings added, “It was pretty crazy thinking about it. I’m like, ‘How can anyone say that about a little kid? This is insane.’ For example, I was 12. I’d go into an audition and I’d do it, and my manager would call me and I’d be like, ‘How’d it go?’ And they’d be like,...

While Tim Allen is back with a new comedy, Shifting Gears doesn't feel like it, unfortunately. ABC launched its latest sitcom midseason to fill in gaps in its programming for shows that aren't supposed to return with new episodes until March. The network is dipping its toes back into a fresh comedy featuring an icon of the sandbox, with Allen fronting the project with Kat Dennings from 2 Broke Girls. Shifting Gears' story follows father and daughter, Matt Parker and Riley Parker, who are forced to live together after years of separation.

Shifting Gears has aired its series premiere, and the cast is filled with familiar faces. ABC’s newest sitcom marks Tim Allen’s return to network television, but many supporting characters are played by actors who have worked with Allen before. Others have experience with co-star Kat Dennings in her varied projects, while a select few are breaking into the world of sitcoms with Shifting Gears. The basic story of Tim Allen’s Shifting Gears follows an estranged father (Allen’s Matt) and daughter (Dennings’ Riley) who reconnect when the daughter moves home with her two children amidst a divorce.
While the pilot episode of Shifting Gears earned negative reviews, the show’s impressive array of actors garnered a sizable following. The classic sitcom format of Shifting Gears leaves the door open for endless additional guest stars and cameos as the series progresses, but the main and recurring cast is already filled with heavy hitters.

Reviews are out for Shifting Gears, and Tim Allen’s return to TV is massively underperforming with critics. Allen previously led one of the best 90s sitcoms (Home Improvement) and returned in 2011 for a respectable 9-season run of Last Man Standing. The story of Tim Allen’s Shifting Gears seemed like a familiar continuation of his past hits, with leading man Matt partly modeled after Allen himself.
While Tim Allen is undoubtedly the show’s main selling point, it has other heavy hitters like Kat Dennings (2 Broke Girls) who plays his estranged daughter, Riley. Dennings' character and her two children move in with Allen’s Matt, but the father-daughter duo are constantly at odds. Though Shifting Gears is set up like a classic sitcom, reviews have criticized aspects of the plot, writing, and overall execution, with Shifting Gears currently sitting at a “rotten” 45% Rotten Tomatoes score. “Shifting Gears” is bringing Tim Allen and Kat Dennings back to television, and the ABC comedy’s showrunner has big hopes for its impact on viewers.
The show, premiering Wednesday, follows Matt (Allen), the stubborn and widowed owner of a car restoration shop who is surprised by the arrival of his estranged daughter Riley (Dennings) arrives to stay with him alongside her teenage children. Tim Allen's beloved 1990s sitcom is finally coming to Netflix. Home Improvement ran for eight seasons on ABC, and was a hit with fans, who made it a ratings success for Disney. Even former President Jimmy Carter had a cameo on the show.
Home Improvement premiered in 1991 and followed the life of Tim "Tool Man" Taylor (Allen), the host of a local home improvement show who is married to Jill (Patricia Heaton) and raising three sons. The show ran until May 1999 and was created by Carmen Finestra, Matt Williams, and David McFadzean. It's classic 1980s and 90s sitcom fare that became popular early on.
The characters are what made Home Improvement such a hit. Those on the Tool Time show brought plenty of laughs, including Richard Karn as his co-host, Al, and Pamela Anderson as Lisa, prior to her famous role on Baywatch.
Meanwhile, Taylor's home life made for memorable episodes and characters.

Tim Allen will return to the world of sitcoms when Shifting Gears debuts on ABC. The actor, who plays Matt Parker in the upcoming show, recently offered some insight into his new character.
"Matt Parker went to Rhode Island School of Design, and on his way to school, his dad had a massive heart attack," Allen told Screen Rant. "He had to come back to North Hollywood to take over the business and never became a designer. He never followed his dream, so there's that little frustration [about] what [his] life could have been. [He] had two kids. One's in the Navy, who we'll meet later, and then Kat Dennings [who is] wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. She plays my daughter, who left [home] in high school."

A popular Tim Allen sitcom is coming to Netflix for the first time. Allen will soon be returning to the world of multi-cam comedies, as he'll star opposite Kat Dennings in the upcoming show Shifting Gears. The story centers on Matt (played by Allen), the stubborn and widowed owner of a car restoration shop who gets to reconnect with his daughter Riley (WandaVision and 2 Broke Girls star Kat Dennings) and his grandchildren when he reluctantly allows her to move back in. It will premiere on ABC on January 8 at 8 Pm Et and stream the next day on Hulu.

There was a time, not very long ago, when conservative comedy was generally dismissed. Conceptually, commentators would say, it’s a contradiction in terms, in that the purpose of comedy is to challenge systems of powers that conservatives, definitionally, seek to preserve. In practice, they only have one joke, and it’s not funny. But in a political climate in which hard-right voices are dominant, ABC evidently doesn’t need to be known as the network that summarily fired Roseanne from her namesake sitcom for one racist tweet too many; now it’s the network getting back in the Tim Allen business after cancelling his last show in 2017, and despite his many backward views and unprofessional on-set behavior. His new multi-cam sitcom, Shifting Gears, is too witless to get mad about, but it’s striking how much effort and talent it wastes trying to counter-balance a 21st-century Tim Allen character.

Tim Allen knows his niche. Between Home Improvement and Last Man Standing, Allen has spent nearly two decades on network TV playing a blue-collar, no-nonsense dad who loves his kids despite all his grumbling (and grunting). Now he’s back on ABC with Shifting Gears — debuting this Wednesday at 8/7c; I’ve seen the first two episodes — a new sitcom that’s built to be right in Allen’s wheelhouse. And despite some flat jokes and predictable turns, it’s built surprisingly well, with a lot of the credit going to co-star Kat Dennings, who proves she can go toe-to-toe...

Tim Allen — perhaps most famously known for playing Tim "The Toolman" Taylor on Home Improvement — is back to being a wisecrackin' dad on network television. The man behind Buzz Lightyear is starring opposite Kat Dennings in a new ABC sitcom called Shifting Gears, and the first trailer for the series is right here, right now, for you to watch. So park it here for a second while we crowbar another car metaphor into this opening paragraph, and then we'll get on with the trailer-viewing, eh?
