The fun thing about being a time traveler is that you can often procrastinate on important tasks for as long as you'd like. This was part of the appeal for Amy (Karen Gillan) at the start of "Doctor Who" season 5; she was having second thoughts about marrying Rory the next day, so the Doctor's promise that she could travel through space and time for as long as she wants beforehand seemed like a great deal.
The rest of the season eventually dealt with Amy's doubts about Rory, but it once again ended with the characters procrastinating. This time, it was the Doctor who took his sweet time getting around to an important task: in the finale, he receives a phone call (seemingly from the future queen or king of England) regarding an emergency situation. In the future there's apparently a train that runs in space called the Orient Express, and...

The story of the courageous leader of the Pride Lands, Mufasa, has finally arrived and it’s roared up a star-studded cast.
Written by Jeff Nathanson (“Young Woman and the Seas”) and directed by Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”) comes the origin story of Mufasa and his brother Taka, who fans eventually know better as Scar. The film is centered on the two lions, who befriend one another as cubs from very different backgrounds. In an effort to evade a deadly foe, the two work together in a cross-country adventure through which they meet young lioness Sarabi, wise mandrill Rafiki and bossy hornbill Zazu.
Donald Glover and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter reprise their roles as Simba and Nala, but there’s several newbies who have joined “The Lion King” pride. Take a look at the cast below.

Exclusive: Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock series has cast the title character’s older brother. Max Irons (Condor) is set as a series regular on the Prime Video show, playing Mycroft Holmes opposite Hero Fiennes Tiffin’s Sherlock. Speculation about Irons’ casting started last month when he was snapped on the set of the series; his character had not been revealed until now.
Inspired by Andy Lane’s book series, Young Sherlock is described as an irreverent, action-packed origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective in a re-imagining of this iconic character. At age 19, Sherlock Holmes (Fiennes Tiffin) is disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom. Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever.

In 2018, John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place turned silence into the building blocks of fright and forged from the horror-thriller genre a modern fable of family love, communication and survival. With its mix of relentless tension and layered storytelling about a tightknit clan fending off an immensely destructive, sound-attuned alien force, the film became a startling hit and cultural phenomenon.
Starting the second chapter quite literally mere seconds after the first movie ends, Krasinski wanted A Quiet Place Part II to again be more than a visceral sensory experience. It had to also drive the Abbott family’s emotional journey forward—this time, towards both independence and community.
Playing in theaters now is director Michael Sarnoski ‘s A Quiet Place: Day One. A prequel to A Quiet Place, the film takes place on the day the creatures arrived on Earth. Set in New York City, audiences witness the devastation of...

The 19th-century nursery rhyme about the less-than-perfect homeowner, from which Agatha Christie borrowed the title for her 44th novel, perfectly encapsulates the Queen of Mystery's Crooked House, a dark and twisty tale of money, family, and murder. Crooked House has often been cited as one of her favorite books, with Christie stating that she "found the study of a certain family interesting to explore." Director Giles Paquet-Brenners 2017 film adaptation was overshadowed when it was first released at the same time as Kenneth Branaghs bigger and flashier adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express. Now available on Prime Video, 2017's Crooked House is getting a second chance to receive the attention it deserves. For one thing, it boasts brilliant performances from Glenn Close and Gillian Anderson at the top of a stellar cast of talented, mostly British, character actors.

Be sure to lock your doors when you get home this Halloween, for a sinister, unearthly presence willing be walking the streets this All Hallow’s Eve.
We don’t mean actual ghosts, obviously, we’re talking about all those precocious costumed youths in shoddily applied face paint having the audacity to knock on your door demanding some of the multipack of snack-size sweets you got from Tesco on the way home from work. Bought them for trick-or-treaters? Pffft. Those Haribo were all for you, and you know it.
So embrace the darkness (and the sugar), draw the curtains, and shut out the world ready to scare yourself silly with these classic British TV ghost stories.

Agatha Christie's stories are timeless and have a genius for plot. They don't age or go out of fashion, allowing for different adaptations. The upcoming film, A Haunting in Venice, sets the story in Venice instead of an English village, showcasing the adaptability of Christie's raw materials. While previous films in the franchise had mixed success, A Haunting in Venice is generating buzz and is expected to perform well upon its release.

The search for missing actor Julian Sands is over. Back in January, Sands had ventured to the Mt. Baldy area in Southern California for a solo hike, as he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed spending time alone in the area. When he failed to return home on Jan. 13, his family reported him missing. Cops were able to locate his vehicle, but over the next five months, no trace of the Warlock star was found, despite extensive searches.
Earlier this month, around 80 volunteers assembled to again scour the Mt. Baldy area hoping to find some new clues as to what happened with Sands. That search, unfortunately, came up empty, but one week later, hikers happened to stumble across human remains just outside of the search zone. At the time, authorities confirmed that a body was located and that further details would be announced pending identification. On Tuesday, the San Bernardino...

The new trailer for the upcoming A Haunting in Venice dropped and showcases a Poirot film unlike any made before. From the eerie horror atmosphere to the mask-wearing ghost villain to the dark tone and soundtrack, this trailer indicates a genre shift away from a cozy Agatha Christie mystery straight into supernatural horror. While, of course, horror is always intriguing, it seems like an odd fit for Hercule Poirot, Christie's Belgian gentleman detective. While Christie occasionally dove into horror, like And Then There Were None and Crooked House, the source material for A Haunting in Venice, 1969's Hallowe'en Party, isn't exactly a spooky story.
Hallowe'en Party begins at the titular event, thrown by author Ariadne Oliver and her friends for local children. At the party, a boastful girl named Joyce is murdered by having her head shoved into the barrel for apple bobbing and drowned. Poirot comes in to investigate,...

When "Knives Out" hit theaters in 2019, murder mystery fans were treated to the prototypical old English manor in America as its main setting. Many classic mysteries have taken place in these types of mansions, from the Agatha Christie novel "Crooked House" to "Clue," so it's probably no surprise the Thrombey family all congregated in a mansion that was definitely built in the 1900s.
However, that's not the same setting we'll be visiting in its upcoming sequel, "Glass Onion." Instead, we'll be vacationing on the beaches of Greece, where an eccentric billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) has gathered his friends for an elaborate murder-mystery party. Just how elaborate, you might ask? Someone's getting murdered for real, but nobody except the killer knows who did it. Perhaps that's why famed detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) has been invited to this luxurious locale, but why, exactly, is the party being held here? According to director Rian Johnson,...

Whether she’s playing a vamp (Dangerous Liaisons), a civil rights champ (Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story), or going camp (101 Dalmatians), Glenn Close always entertains. Exclusive: Gillian Anderson, who can be seen on Netflix’s The Crown as Margaret Thatcher, has signed with UTA.

Anderson told Deadline earlier this year that she never hesitated at the prospect of playing a Pm who many consider tyrannical. “No hesitation at all,” she said. “There are a few things in life where, if they come your way, you just...

While most of the toys in the Toy Story universe have been harmless, Toy Story 4 is returning to its Big Baby days with a sinister vintage doll named Gabby Gabby, voiced by none other than Christina Hendricks.
Hendricks began her career as a model for well over a decade. Before her big break, you may have recognized her on shows such as ER, Firefly, and Kevin Hill. But over the years, Hendricks's standout role definitely has been that of Joan Holloway on Mad Men. Her part as the formidable and omniscient '60s office manager on the AMC series garnered her a total of six Emmy nominations during her run between 2007 and 2015. Of course, her momentum on the small screen didn't end with Mad Men. Hendricks also recently appeared as Olivia Rogers on Amazon's The Romanoffs and currently stars as suburban mom-turned-criminal Beth Boland on NBC's Good Girls.

Having decided to jettison reality series “Big Brother,” Britain’s Channel 5 is pushing deeper into the U.K. drama business, with a slate of new scripted titles including a prison drama, a crime thriller and a murder mystery. The free-to-air network has traditionally concentrated on unscripted and entertainment, complemented by a lineup of acquired drama, much of it hailing from from the U.S.
Channel 5 has now made its biggest move into scripted under the ownership of Viacom, which bought the free-to-air broadcaster in 2014. It includes a three-year deal with production and distribution group Kew Media, which will sell several of the new shows internationally.
The drama slate is headed by “Clink,” a female prison drama aimed at the sought-after young adult audience. It will play on Channel 5’s 5Star channel. British indie La Productions is making the 10-parter, which will bow in 2019.

Soon after returning from Los Angeles, where Screen International had attended the American Film Market (Afm), I met with the head of one of the UK’s largest distributors. “What is going on?” they asked, rhetorically. “It’s crazy out there.”
The industry veteran was referring to the general listlessness of the traditional independent acquisitions market but also specifically to inaction among UK buyers. Paramount’s splashy $10m deal for comedy Book Club, starring Diane Keaton and Jane Fonda, was the standout at an otherwise soporific Afm. Personally, I had never covered a major market as quiet.
To take the case of the UK, the territory has been shaping towards consolidation for some time. “We’re all going into markets much more cautiously,” Lionsgate UK boss Zygi Kamasa told Screen ahead of the market. Entertainment One...

"What are murderers like?" "You, me, everyone." Sony Pictures has unveiled a trailer for Crooked House, adapted from Agatha Christie's 1949 novel of the same name. Max Irons stars as Charles Hayward, spy-turned-private-detective who is invited to help solve a gruesome, mysterious death of a wealthy patriarch. Nobody is above suspicion, including Sophia, his client and former lover. The powerhouse ensemble cast includes Glenn Close, Stefanie Martini, Christina Hendricks, Gillian Anderson, Julian Sands, Christian McKay, Amanda Abbington, and Terence Stamp. This looks like it could be a good double feature with this year's remake of Murder on the Orient Express, especially since they are both Agatha Christie adaptations. There's some strong performances featured here, might be worth a look. Check it out. Here's the official trailer for Gilles Paquet-Brenner's Crooked House, direct from Sony's YouTube: In Agatha Christie’s most twisted tale, the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of...

There are a couple of us Playlisters are who bonafide Agatha Christie dorks, so news that we’re getting two big screen adaptations of her novels in the next few months is Marvel level exciting. Of course, Kenneth Branagh‘s star-studded “Murder On The Orient Express” is taking up most of the bandwidth, but “Crooked House” looks like it could be the sleeper favorite of the pair.

While Jake Kasdan had moderate success with last year’s Bad Teacher — a couple of folks even said it was funny, too — he’s bounced around quite a bit in the time since. In this mere, not-so-long span, there have been offers for Sex Tape, Family Getaway, an untitled comedy, and the Shawn Levy-produced Man Made. That’s plenty (actually, too much) for anybody, but even David O. Russell can give us some hint as to what’s coming next.
Add one to the pile, since Variety reports that Kasdan and Universal are planning to join forces on an espionage comedy, My Spy, a piece said to be in the vein of ’80s classics such as Weird Science and Risky Business. Michael Diliberti (30 Minutes or Less) and Jeremy Slater wrote the original script for CBS Films, but, with Universal’s pending acquisition, Kasdan and his brother, Jon, will give the thing another polish.

It’s been a little over a year now since we heard that Neil Labute was set to direct an adaptation of famed mystery writer Agatha Christie’s “Crooked House,” which he would be bringing to life from a script he co-wrote with Academy Award-winning “Gosford Park” writer Julian Fellowes and Tim Rose Price. There was word shortly after that an impressive ensemble of talent in Julie Andrews, Matthew Goode, Gemma Arterton, and Gabriel Byrne would be filling out the plum roles the film had to offer – but it looks as if that may have changed entirely. THR reports Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired all rights in the U.S., Canada and internationally for the film, which could help secure it a pretty nice release – but it should also be noted the report states that casting is about to gear up in London as the film is set for a fall production start,...

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired U.S. and Canada rights, along with select international territories, on Crooked House, the Neil Labute-directed adaptation of the Agatha Christie’s murder mystery novel that is being made by Ealing Metro International. Script is by Gosford Park and Downton Abbey scribe Julian Fellowes, Tim Rose Price and Labute. “It’s been far too long since we’ve seen Agatha Christie’s work on the big screen,” Labute said. “Crooked House is one of her best and most surprising murder mysteries. It’s the perfect title with which to bring a whole new audience to Christie, while at the same time delivering a wonderfully suspenseful experience to her legions of existing fans.” Shooting will start in the fall in London, with Brilliant Films’ Joe Abrams and Rory Gilmartin producing with Marc Samuelson of Samuelson Productions.
