Netflix’s one-shot show Adolescence has made history by becoming the first streaming program to top Britain’s weekly TV ratings.
Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham’s drama beat out long-standing broadcaster favorites like the BBC’s The Apprentice and Death in Paradise after its first episode was watched by 6.45 million people in the first week of release, according to ratings body Barb.
It’s the biggest audience for any streaming TV show in the U.K. in a single week, leapfrogging Fool Me Once, also on Netflix, which accrued 6.3 million in its first week.
The four episodes of the miniseries are each filmed in one, continuous shot, leaving audience members flummoxed at the stellar acting and trying to make sense of how director Philip Barantini filmed the oners.
The show tells the story of Jamie (Owen Cooper), a 13-year-old boy who is accused of stabbing a girl from school to death.

The following contains major spoilers from Death in Paradise Series 14, Episode 5, now streaming on BritBox.
Death in Paradise Series 14, Episode 5 is somewhat a reminder of why this show has been a British television staple. BBC and BritBox viewers have a general idea of how the mystery is going to go -- the specifics change, but there's always a "locked room" premise and always an ending where the Detective Inspector gathers the suspects. What keeps the show going is the character moments that keep the format interesting.
Episode 5 is a football-centered story as star goalkeeper Ines Mercedes is found dead in the locker room. Mervin Wilson and the team have no idea how they didn't see or hear anything, since they were sitting in the stands at the big game. But what unfolds is a plot that runs parallel to developments in Detective Sergeant Naomi Thomas' personal life. Plus, there's a...

The following contains spoilers from Death in Paradise Series 14, Episode 4, now streaming on BritBox. It also contains discussion of sexual assault.
Death in Paradise Series 14, Episode 4 finally cracks Mervin Wilson's grumpy exterior -- just a little bit. The British television hit dives into the idea of family again, particularly the relationships between parents and children. This, of course, provides a convenient springboard for Saint Marie's newest Detective Inspector to reflect on what happened to his mom. It's an episode that pulls at the heartstrings, while it might also be a turning point for Mervin.
Episode 4 involves the poisoning of four people at a rum distillery, just before owner Patrick Ambrose can sign the place over to its new owner. While everyone else survives, Patrick dies from ingesting methanol. It's up to Mervin and the team to figure out who was targeting him, but in doing so, they pull out all of his dirty laundry.
