Netflix’s Colombian crime drama, Medusa, focuses on the dastardly shenanigans of Barranquilla city’s most influential, powerful aristocrats, the Hidalgo family—and if the reference to the mythological figure in the title wasn’t indicative enough, the family in question is indeed comparable to the Greek pantheon of gods when it comes to hiding heinous, despicable secrets. With the exception of Maya and possibly Esperanza Hidalgo, every single character in the series is presented as a twisted, wicked individual with a broken moral compass who can go to any length to survive in the power struggle or get what they want. The characterization, despite being somewhat stereotyped, allows scope for discussion regarding emotional tribulations, redemption, and second chances.

Netflix has a lot of series that aren't beloved by critics, but nevertheless have enjoyed a steadily increasing stream of popularity. The best original Netflix shows are lauded by both critics and audiences alike, with their quality being reflected in both their critical analyses and audience participation. However, the two don't always positively correlate, with many series being condemned by critics only to later grow in viewership.
There are several different types of series that appeal better to audiences than the high standards of professional reviewers. Sometimes, the likes of reality TV shows, which don't normally even register on the radar of prestige television critics, gradually become some of Netflix's biggest draws to the platform, soaking up the admiration of easy-viewing goodness. In other instances, pointed comedy and drama series fail to resonate with critics, accumulating plenty of negative reviews, only to nevertheless somehow capture the attention of casual subscribers.

Netflix is expanding its viewership data transparency with the release of its first biannual report covering six months of streaming habits on the platform, revealing for the first time how licensed content like USA Network drama “Suits” performs alongside the streamer’s originals.
The new report, titled “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report,” covers more than 18,000 titles and nearly 100 billion hours viewed between January-June 2023. It includes: 1) hours viewed for every title (both Netflix original and licensed TV shows and movies) watched for more than 50,000 hours during that period; 2) the premiere date for any Netflix original TV series or film; and 3) whether a title was available globally.
Each piece of that information is key here, because these findings aren’t as cut and dried as Netflix’s weekly Top 10 reports and “Most Popular” lists. For example, at the top of this report is “The Night Agent,” a series that debuted...

Mike Myers’ limited comedic series “The Pentaverate,” about an ancient secret society trying to save the world, didn’t register with Netflix viewers in its first week of streaming, and didn’t make Netflix’s Top 10 Most-Viewed English Language Series chart for the week of May 2-8.
It was the comedian’s first real project since his appearance as a record producer who gives Queen a thumbs down in 2018’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” While The Guardian found the series “sweet, silly [and] charmingly harmless,” many echoed The Daily Beast, who labeled it “embarrassingly bad.” The series costars Ken Jeong, Keegan-Michael Key, Debi Mazer and Jennifer Saunders.
Meanwhile the series finale of “Ozark” kept the No. 1 spot globally with 102.1 million minutes viewed, up from last week’s 78.4 million. The first season also made the chart, landing at No. 7 with 13.6 million minutes viewed. It’s now been in the Top 10 for nine weeks.

“Ozark” fans, rejoice. The Jason Bateman and Julia Garner-starring drama series is returning to Netflix in April with a second part to its fourth season — and it’s just one of many other hotly anticipated titles coming to the streamer this month.
April will also see the long-awaited sophomore installment to “Russian Doll,” the mind-bending “Groundhog Day”-esque dramedy series starring Natasha Lyonne as a hard-partying New York City woman stuck in a brain-melting circuitous loop from hell.
For fans of capital-m mess, there’s the Spanish-language “Elite,” which traces the scandalous (and often murderous) exploits of the posh attendees of high school Las Encinas. Or, if you prefer your glamorous mess via reality series, “Selling Sunset” — about the lux real estate market in Los Angeles — is premiering its fifth season April 22.

A list of new streaming releases on Netflix, what a concept!
Netflix’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by the return of one of the great sci-fi comedies ever. Natasha Lyonne is set to return as the temporally displaced Nadia on Russian Doll season 2 on April 20. The first season of the show premiered in 2019 and appeared to tell a rather complete story about one Brooklyn woman’s experiences of dying over and over again. But Lyonne and fellow producers Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler still have some story to tell. Netflix is undoubtedly very happy to let them continue to tell it.
