Me, Myself & Irene is a Jekyll and Hyde story where Jim Carrey hams it up as a character struggling with his sanity. The film played out dark themes for comedic effect, provoking protest over its depiction of mental health.
Hulu is streaming Me, Myself & Irene on Apr. 1. This film added to Jim Carrey's repertoire of slapsticks, including Ace Ventura, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and Liar Liar. The Truman Show and Man on the Moon proved he has the range for serious dramas, but he returned to form with the 2000 comedy. Carrey went all out with Me, Myself & Irene; his character's suppressed rage led to a psychotic breakdown, consequently manifesting a second, more aggressive personality. Critical reception for the film was mixed, but it was a box office hit (earning $149.3 million against its $51 million budget).
Carrey confirmed he did all of his stunts in Me, Myself & Irene.

Jim Carrey said in April 2022 that he was likely retiring from acting after reprising the evil Dr. Robotnik in “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” which opened in theaters the same month. It was Carrey’s second time playing the video game villain. He first starred as Robotnik in 2020’s “Sonic the Hedgehog,” which marked Carrey first major role in a studio movie since the 2014 sequel “Dumb and Dumber To.”
“Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious,” Carrey told Access Hollywood on the “Sonic 2” press tour. “It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”

Jim Carrey's darkest film is an underrated thriller of which no critic offered a positive review. With a 0% critical approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes, a film that can't be more rotten is easily forgotten in cinema history. Dark Crimes features Carrey in an unexpected role. Carrey is most known for starring as Truman in The Truman Show and is shouldering two roles in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, so the film that tackles sex work and crime doesn't seem to fit the actor's overall vibe.
Carrey's character, Tadek, is not perfect. To some, he's a failure, while others may see him as a victim in a much darker game. Dark Crimes takes the darker side of The Truman Show and amplifies it three times more. Tadek seems like the exact opposite of Truman, and yet Carrey's performance makes viewers want to root for his success. Perhaps 2018 was simply not the right time for Dark Crimes.

No matter how hard our tech overlords try to convince us otherwise, when it comes to something like film, everything is subjective. But if we're going to live in a time when art is reduced to percentage scores and easily-digestible metrics are the only thing that makes navigating the endless sea of "content" on offer easier, then we might as well embrace our current moment and ask the question — what is the worst movie of all time? Of course, there is no definitive answer to this query, but that hasn't stopped Rotten Tomatoes from giving us its closest approximation.
Plenty of movies have earned a 0% Rotten Tomatoes score, Jim Carrey's "Dark Crimes" being one example. But have you ever heard of "Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever"? Me neither. But this 2002 action thriller, in which Antonio Banderas and Lucy Liu face off as opposing agents, has managed to distinguish itself, though...

The Cable Guy, despite featuring notable stars, was a critical failure compared to Jim Carrey's previous hits. Matthew Broderick and Judd Apatow defend Carrey's performance in the film, noting the pressure he faced due to his hefty salary. Carrey unexpectedly reprised his role in 2022 for a Super Bowl ad.
The Cable Guy was released in 1996 on the back of three huge Jim Carrey hits that seemed to suggest he could do no wrong. However, unlike Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb & Dumber, The Cable Guy was a critical failure and only a borderline box office success in comparison, and marked one of the first real low-points in the actors career since he came to the attention of Hollywood. During a recent appearance at the Tribeca Film Festival, Carreys co-star Matthew Broderick and the movies producer Judd Apatow shared their memories of the film and its original status as a failure.

Alexandros Avranas' 2018 film "Dark Crimes," starring Jim Carrey, was extrapolated from a true crime article published in the New Yorker in 2008. The article, post-modernly called "True Crime," was written by David Grann, and it told the story of a Polish novelist named Krystian Bala who murdered a small business owner named Dariusz Janiszewski in the year 2000. For three years, the police were unable to solve the case, and Bala seemed to have gotten away with it. Bala, perhaps feeling smug about his ability to evade detection for so long, decided to poke the bear a little bit. In 2003, he published a crime novel called "Amok," wherein he wrote a fictionalized version of the Janiszewski murder, including intimate details that only the killer could have known. Bala depicted his fictional self as a badass nihilist who loved quoting Nietzsche and didn't care about human laws, man. "Amok" was a big hit,...

The problem with Rotten Tomatoes as an aggregator for professional critics' opinions and audiences' reactions towards a movie is that it nullifies all nuance. No matter how many redeeming qualities it may have, a movie can only be "Fresh" or "Rotten." Without a middle ground, some good movies are unfairly deemed Rotten.
Thanks to Rotten Tomatoes' false dilemma, many movies were unfairly dismissed or even bashed by people who haven't seen them yet. Given how films are inherently subjective, no one is obligated to like a "Rotten" movie. That said, these particular movies' Rotten scores don't hold up under extra scrutiny or just one viewing.

The 2010s featured plenty of wonderful movies that have become modern classics, including Inception, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Parasite, but not every film from the decade was equally well-received. Despite the many terrific films to come out of the 2010s, there have always been plenty of flops that were met with universally negative reviews.

Every 10 years or so, Hollywood seems to fall head over heels in love with a writer. In the 1990s, studios couldn't stop turning John Grisham's legal drama/thriller novels into movies. Such was also the case with romance novelist Nicholas Sparks, starting with "Message in a Bottle" in 1999 and stretching on throughout the 2000s and a little beyond.
More recently, journalist and writer David Grann has quietly emerged as the hot new thing in Tinseltown. His book "Killers of the Flower Moon" is now a $200 million, three-hour epic directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and the screen rights to his newest work, "The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder," were acquired by Scorsese and DiCaprio before it was even published. Jim Carrey’s history in film has produced some of the best (and worst) movies at the turn of the millennium, but it would seem that his time in the spotlight may be coming to an end. Carrey has revealed that he will be stepping away from Hollywood following Sonic the Hedgehog 2, bringing to a close one of the most incredible and inspiring film careers in recent memory. There are actually dozens of Jim Carrey movies, and he has been among the most recognizable and reliable faces in comedy for nearly 30 years. Undoubtedly, his retirement will leave a void in family entertainment, one which will take a character actor and comedian with a once-in-a-generation talent to fill.

This week, anyone invested in the entertainment industry should be following recent developments surrounding a major Hollywood actor whose three decades of success might be coming to an end.
That actor, of course, is… Jim Carrey.
As Will Smith’s slap continues to reverberate across popular culture, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” has made its way to theaters, with Carrey’s return as the gonzo mustache-twirling villain Dr. Robotnik quite possibly serving as his swan song. In an Access Hollywood interview promoting the release, Carrey said he was “fairly serious” about retirement, chalking up the decision to his “quiet life” as a painter. That would be a loss to many filmmakers whose work could benefit from his involvement, and raises questions about why he hasn’t been associated with the kind of opportunities that might keep him engaged — i.e., work from young directors and original ideas.

After Jim Carrey won back to back Golden Globes for Best Actor in 1999 and 2000 for his acclaimed performances in The Truman Show and Man on the Moon, many industry analysts were predicting that he could become a regular contender for awards season glory if he made a concerted effort to reinvent himself as a dramatic talent despite initially rising to superstardom as a one-man variety show in a series of hit comedies.
For a while, it looked as though he would balance the best of both worlds after leading Bruce Almighty to almost $485 million at the box office in 2003 before appearing in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind less than twelve months later, but Carrey soon reverted to type and over the next decade, his star faded after he lent his name to a series of critical and commercial disappointments, offset by the odd success.

Netflix's latest original movie has joined an exclusive club, albeit one that the company would undoubtedly prefer not to be associated with. The Last Days of American Crime, which hit the streaming service recently, has earned a rare 0 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Even without the rebate Poland was attracting major international productions, including Claire Denis’ sci-fi drama “High Life,” Alexandros Avranas’ Jim Carrey-starring crime thriller “Dark Crimes,” and Steven Spielberg’s Cold War thriller “Bridge of Spies,” which earned production designer Adam Stockhausen an Oscar nomination.
Stockhausen recalls driving across eastern Germany, scouting for locations alongside Markus Bensch, the location manager for Berlin’s Studio Babelsberg, their car skirted past picturesque Görlitz—where Stockhausen had done his Academy Award-winning work on Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel”—and toward the Polish border.
Back in Berlin, the two had been struggling to find the perfect location for their period drama in a city that’s been ceaselessly rebuilt and modernized since the end of the Cold War. At Babelsberg, Bensch had shown Stockhausen an old photograph of a street scene in Wroclaw, Poland—about five hours’ drive east. The snapshot seemed...

Netflix is out with its list of everything new coming in October, and everything that’s leaving the streaming service throughout the month.
Highlights include “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” on Oct. 11, which follows fugitive Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) as he runs from his captors, the law and his past, and Paul Rudd’s existential comedy “Living With Yourself,” in which a spa treatment promising to make him a better person ends up creating a second, better version of himself.
On Oct. 25, Eddie Murphy’s feature “Dolemite Is My Name” finds the comedy legend portraying the real life Rudy Ray Moore, described as “a comedy and rap pioneer who proved naysayers wrong when his hilarious, obscene, kung-fu fighting alter ego, Dolemite, became a 1970s Blaxploitation phenomenon.”

Netflix has confirmed that a whopping 66 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in October. Leading off the lineup is the eagerly awaited “Breaking Bad” movie, which the streaming service is billing as a “television event.” Emmy winner Aaron Paul reprises his role as Jesse Pinkman, who is on the run as his past catches up with him. The first half of the sixth and final season of the cult favorite “Bojack Horseman” will also drop this month.
Two features with awards buzz are coming to Netflix just weeks after their debuts at the Toronto film festival: “The Laundromat,” Steven Soderbergh‘s wry satire about international financial fraud that showcases Oscar darling Meryl Streep; and “Dolemite Is My Name,” a vehicle for Eddie Murphy who portrays 1970s comedian Rudy Ray Moore.

Jimmy Carrey becomes Jack Torrance in a new deepfake video pulled from The Shining. And it's no laughing matter. Carrey was known early on in his career for doing his Jack Nicholson impression. It's a funny bit, perfected over the years. And many have wondered what it would be like if this version of Jack replaced the real thing. No we get to see what that looks like, and it's as far removed from being funny as anything can be.
Jimmy Carrey's face has replaced Jack Nicholson via deepfake technology, and it's unnerving to say the least. You can still see bits of Jack peeking through, and we hear the actor's real voice coming out of Jim Carrey's mouth. More than anything, it's creepy. And it brings a chilling new look at an iconic scene from one of the greatest horror movies of all time.

Who’s ready for some super-speed mayhem? Paramount Pictures has debuted the first official trailer for its upcoming family tentpole “Sonic the Hedgehog,” based on the widely popular Sega video game franchise of the same name. Similar to “Detective Pikachu,” this fall’s “Sonic” movie adaptation will put an animated blue hedgehog into real world settings and opposite human characters.
“Sonic the Hedgehog” stars James Marsden as a newly appointed town sheriff who travels to San Francisco and gets mixed up in Sonic’s mission to defeat the evil Dr. Ivo Robotnik. In the film, Sonic is voiced by “Parks and Recreation” favorite Ben Schwartz and is depicted as a juvenile delinquent who is not only trying to thwart Robotnik’s plan but is also trying to evade capture by the U.S. government. Jim Carrey stars as the film’s cartoonish villain. Additional supporting roles are played by Tika Sumpter and Adam Pally.

You’ve read about the best movies of 2018 — IndieWire’s staff list is topped by “Roma,” followed by “First Reformed,” “The Favourite,” “Cold War,” and “Shoplifters” — but what about the worst? As they do every year, the fine folks at Metacritic have crunched the numbers and come out with a list of the most poorly received films to come out in the last 12 months.
Dinesh D’Souza’s “Death of a Nation” has the dubious distinction of coming in at #1, but it isn’t just the worst film of 2018 — it’s the worst film in the site’s history: “Out of the 11,819 films for which we have Metascores,” the list reads, “‘Nation’ ranks as #11,819.”
The full list:

The 50th anniversary of the Sharon Tate murders happens next year, and there is more interest in the heinous crime than ever before. Most attention has been placed on Quentin Tarantino's upcoming epic Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which will use the Tate murder as a wraparound for its 60s set story. But there is another Sharon Tate movie coming, and today we have a first look at this true crime psychological thriller.
The Haunting of Sharon Tate stars former Disney princess Hilary Duff in the title role. And she has already been lambasted by Sharon Tate's sister over the movie. It's Margot Robbie playing Sharon Tate in Tarantino's film, which has garnered less vitriol from the Tate family. A first look photo shows what Duff has in store while embedding the character.

Jim Carrey is in negotiations to portray Doctor Robotnik, aka Eggman, in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. It was announced at the end of May that James Marsden will star in the film, but it isn't clear which role he will have. Additionally, it's been reported that the production is trying to nail down Paul Rudd to play Sonic's police officer friend named Tom. The combination of Rudd, Marsden, and Carrey in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie could make for a box office success.
Sonic the Hedgehog is going to blend live-action and CGI and will be directed by Jeff Fowler. Deadline reports that Jim Carrey is close to signing on to the project to play the evil Doctor Robotnik. Romanian actor Vlad Ivanov is known to many abroad for his role as the amoral underground abortionist in “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,” the 2007 Cristian Mungiu film that heralded the country’s New Wave when it won in Cannes. The stage and film performer, who serves on this year’s Transilvania Intl. Film Festival main prize jury, is these days transitioning into international work with the likes of Jim Carrey (“Dark Crimes”) and with a leading role in “Sunset,” the new film by Oscar-winner Laszlo Nemes (“Son of Saul”). For Ivanov, it’s all about roles with new challenges, he tells Variety.

In “Dark Crimes,” Jim Carrey wears a grayish beard, cropped hair, and the jacket and turtleneck of a silently dissident Slavic literature professor from the mid-’60s. His character, named Tadek, is actually a Polish police officer, and Carrey speaks in an accent that’s so whispery and vague I got the feeling that if he were playing a Polish plumber back in his “In Living Color” sketch-comedy days, he might have worked that much harder to make his inflections authentic.
Tadek is a detective who got demoted to the lowly job of records-room clerk after a botched investigation. Desperate to win back his status, and his dignity, too, he seizes on a murder case that no one else will touch, maybe because it involves a sex club frequented by his boss. Throughout “Dark Crimes,” Carrey broods and stares like an actor who’s out to muffle any hint of...

The latest Jim Carrey film entitled “Dark Crimes” casts him as a detective investigating the murder of a prominent businessman. The film was made in Poland and offers a dark subject matter and role for the once former stand-up comedian.
Carrey wanted to perform from a very young age and when he was just 10 years old wrote to “The Carol Burnett Show” offering his services as an impressionist. While his request was politely declined it would only be another decade before Carrey was all over television with his antic comedic act. He ultimately achieved the brass ring for comedians of this era when he got to appear on “The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.” In 1984 the 22-year-old Carrey was cast as the lead in a TV series called “The Duck Factory” which was supposed to be a star-making vehicle for the actor. Despite its prime placement on NBC’s Thursday...

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.
You can thank Avengers: Infinity War spill over and May’s most anticipated blockbuster Solo (open May 25) for leaving the four week month rather spare where it concerns studio pictures despite being the start of summer. I’d steer clear of the month if I were an executive too—heck, three of the posters highlighted below aren’t even “true” theatrical releases (two hit Netflix with the third making its bow on HBO).
As any cinephile knows, however, there are always a few strong pictures banking on the oft-discussed counter-programming position.

It’s always a treat when actors truly disappear into roles, and Jim Carrey looks to have done precisely that for Alexandros Avranas’ Dark Crimes, formerly titled True Crimes. Carrey is barely recognizable in the film as a police officer named Tadek, who is on quest to solve a murder. In this new clip, Carrey’s Tadek interrogates a suspect. In the […]...
