Science fiction films are a staple of modern Hollywood's slate of blockbusters, with franchises that feature space-faring adventure, futuristic technology and other-worldly creatures being some of the highest-grossing movies of the last few decades. Science fiction movies also have a long history in Hollywood, dating all the way back to the classic films of Geroge Mellies like A Trip to the Moon.
But many science fiction films do not stand the test of time, or fail to meet the expectations of audiences on release, as evidenced by Roger Ebert's scathing reviews of many of the films he had to see in that genre. The worst that science fiction movies have to offer throw away the genre's roots in telling tales about deep themes, replacing human stories with cheap thrills.

Rola Bauer will executive produce Amazon’s “Totally Spies!” and “Pompeii: A Day of Fire” after recently exiting her previous executive role at the company.
Bauer has been added as non-writing executive producer for both live-action series in the wake of her departure as Amazon’s head of Pan-English scripted originals. She left the role in late October to “return to her entrepreneurial roots” as an independent producer.
“Totally Spies!” and “Pompeii: A Day of Fire” are currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios, with both series drawing from existing IP.
The live-action series of “Totally Spies!” draws from the animated series, which is in production on its eighth season. The YA series of the same name will follow stylish best friends Clover, Alex and Sam as they navigate saving the world as international spies, while trying to survive the ups and downs of first year college life, per the official logline.

Rola Bauer is staying in the Amazon family.
Bauer, who was Head of Pan-English scripted originals at the company before departing at the end of last year, has boarded two high-profile scripted projects that are in development at Prime Video.
The Tandem Productions co-founder, who joined MGM as President, International Television Productions in 2020 before it was acquired by the tech giant, will serve as an exec producer on its live-action remake of kids series Totally Spies! and Pompeii: A Day of Fire, which comes from Michael Hirst and Ridley Scott.
It’s not unusual for a former buyer to return to projects that they originally shepherded, as an independent producer.

It says a lot about the human condition, or at least the human ego, that the majority of our post-apocalyptic stories are about people who survive the apocalypse and become way more kickass. As opposed to, say, stories about the cockroaches who live on after we destroy ourselves, which is probably a more plausible scenario. The apocalypse looks like a pretty bad time in movies like “Fury Road” and “The Matrix” but the post-apocalypse is going to be pretty darned cool if those movies are any indication. At least that’s what Hollywood is selling.
Paul W.S. Anderson is no stranger to the post-apocalyptic subgenre. He’s made multiple “Resident Evil” films set in the aftermath of a zombie outbreak. Those films starred action hero Milla Jovovich as a superpowered post-apocalyptic warrior named Alice. But that was then and this is now, so he’s mixing it up a little with “In the Lost Lands.

Pink Floyd have shared the new trailer for their remastered Live at Pompeii concert film, which is returning to the big screen — including IMAX — this April.

In The Lost Lands, a new movie based on a short story of the same name by Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin, comes out in the U.S. next weekend. In The Lost Lands stars Milla Jovovich as Gray Alys, a sorceress known to be able to procure anything your heart can desire...although you may not like the price you have to pay for it. Her latest quest takes her into the mysterious Lost Lands, guided by the hunter Boyce (Dave Bautista). Watch the trailer above and a clip below:
Yes, Dave Bautista threw a two-headed snake at some goons and it killed a bunch of them. That's the kind of sideways, high-octane entertainment you can expect from In The Lost Lands.

“Pink Floyd at Pompeii — McMlxxii,” the rock band’s 1972 concert film/documentary, will revisit theaters with a restored version that is coming to Imax and other cinema screens starting April 24, followed shortly by a first-time stand-alone release of the soundtrack as an official live album on May 2.
Trafalgar Releasing and Sony Music Vision are bringing the film back into theaters, to be seen in a 4K digital remaster created from the original 35mm footage. Steven Wilson, whose remixes are well known to fans of classic rock, was behind the board for a new Dolby mix of the movie’s audio.
The live album will come out just a week after the film’s reappearance in cinemas, with Legacy, Sony’s catalog division, issuing it on CD, vinyl, digital audio and Dolby Atmos formats. It’s the first time the music from the film has been commercially released as a stand-alone item.

In the ruins of postwar Naples, 1949 stands out as a crucible of survival when life emerges from the ashes of destruction. Celestina, an orphan, and her streetwise companion, Carmine, navigate a landscape rife with despair while also brimming with youthful vigour. Their bond, formed through adversity, encapsulates the essence of innocence amid chaos—a sad reminder of childhood’s ephemeral purity in a traumatized world.
Their disastrous stowaway adventure on the Victory steamship takes them into the immense unknown, a metaphorical ocean reflecting the stormy depths of the human psyche. As the children avoid the ship’s captain’s inebriated anger and deal with the sharp class disparity, the voyage becomes a liminal realm in which the limits of youthful innocence and the harsh realities of adult struggles blend. Each wave has existential weight, echoing the harsher realities of migration and identity.

Quick Links A 'Gladiator' Sequel Is Following in a Tried and True Tradition From Prestige Events to B-Movie Dreck Ridley Scott's Quarter-Century Struggle to Resurrect the Old-School Epic
Director Ridley Scott's Gladiator II, currently in theaters, is an increasingly rare entry in the sword and sandal species of film. Arguably the first significant cinematic genre, it became the go-to model for some of the first blockbusters in the 1950s. It came with a lot of baggage and some stigma. For as many historical action films that have inundated theaters since the dawn of the medium, they all tend to stick to a few well-trodden tropes, usually focusing on a single man with a penchant for extreme sports, a mustache-twirling villain, and a black and white tale of revenge. The substance is less the plot than the subtext.

Game of Thrones star Kit Harington has one critically panned movie dominating streaming with The Beast Within, but another one of his flicks thats more than 10 years old was just added to a new streaming service. Harington stars alongside Keifer Sutherland in Pompeii, the Roman action epic that sees a slave-turned-gladiator race against a volcano to save his true love from a beloved Roman senator. Pompeii was one of the many new additions added to Netflix at the start of the month along with The Scorpion King, the desert adventure flick starring Dwayne Johnson that is famous for its poor CGI. In addition to Harington and Sutherland, Pompeii also stars Jared Harris, Emily Browning and Jean-Francois Lachapelle and the film currently sits at abysmal scores of 27% from critics and 34% from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

A topical historical drama depicting the creation of IVF; a paranoid thriller series starring Colman Domingo; a bracingly original crime musical, and awards contender, from Jacques Audiard; the second part of the final season of Cobra Kai; and a reverential big-screen adaptation of a Pulitzer-winning August Wilson play are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in November.
On Nov. 7, action and mystery drama Outer Banks returns to Netflix. The first half of season four ended with several cliff-hangers for the Pogues, many of which should be resolved, to some degree, in the second half of the season. Over on Kildare Island, Rudy Pankow’s JJ probably gets the biggest bomb dropped on him when he learns that he’s not the son of his alcoholic and abusive father, Luke. The cast have promised “craziness” so expect some more jaw-dropping revelations.

Kit Harington is synonymous with Jon Snow. Before Game of Thrones, the British actor was a complete unknown. HBO took a risk by casting a new actor as the plot-crucial bastard child of Ned Stark, but it was one that paid off for both the actor and the series. Jon Snow, and by extension Harington, became a household name during the powerful eight-season reign of Game of Thrones. Though he won neither, Harington was nominated for two Emmys for his part in the acclaimed TV series.
Game of Thrones led to several other roles for Harington. This included a main part in the 2014 historical epic Pompeii, as well as a main voice actor in DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon series. More recently, Harington had a role in the 2024 Max series Industry, wherein he played Henry Muck. Many of these films have been well-regarded, but this is not true for...

To many, Kiefer Sutherland is known best as 24 protagonist Jack Bauer, but before the action series began, the actor was known for playing multiple villainous characters. Some of Sutherland's more sympathetic characters make it difficult to believe he could portray such memorable antagonists like those in Eye for an Eye and Stand By Me. Yet every villainous character portrayed by Sutherland was believable and wholly embodied by the Canadian actor.
In recent years, Sutherland's filmography hasn't been strictly defined by such characters as it was in the '80s and '90s. Still, rare, strong villain characters can still be seen. In 2023, Sutherland appeared in the sci-fi comedy They Cloned Tyrone where he delivered an interesting villainous performance in a supporting role. Both longtime fans and newcomers can enjoy going back through Sutherland's filmography and seeing his range through his best villain performances.

Editor's Note: The following may contain spoilers for The Masked Singer Season 12.Every pre-season, The Masked Singer likes to tease the season with a contestants performance. Last season, the series dropped Goldfishs performance of Vampire by Olivia Rodrigo and fans instantly knew that voice. It was Vanessa Hudgens, who went on to win the season. This time, the show released Ships performance of Pompeii by Bastille. The performance is haunting and quite captivating. But listening to only the first few bars, it may be evident who that voice belongs to.

Madonna is facing backlash after plans to throw a birthday party on the ancient ruins of Pompeii have been leaked.
The singer reportedly booked the Teatro Granda, a 2,200-year-old amphitheater in Pompeii, for her 66th birthday on Aug. 16. She invited around 500 A-list celebrities to join her celebration, including Katy Perry and Italian Minister For Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano.
The amphitheater is believed to have been booked by an American events company for €30,000, a price that many Italians are offended by.

While most of Disney's Star Wars shows have stuck to familiar time periods, The Acolyte takes fans to a new era in the franchise's on-screen history: the High Republic. According to the book Star Wars: Timelines, the High Republic Era lasted from 500 to 100 Bby, with The Acolyte taking place near the end of this period. In other words, the series takes place about 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, distancing it from the Skywalker Saga and most known Star Wars figures. This leaves audiences with a brand-new cast of characters to get to know.
