Abramorama has acquired North American distribution rights to “Uncharitable,” a documentary about the roles that charities and non-profits play in society. The indie distributor will open the film on Sept. 22 in New York at Angelika’s Village East and Sept. 29 in Los Angeles at Laemmle’s Royale before beginning its North American rollout.
“Uncharitable” was directed and produced by Stephen Gyllenhaal, the director of “Waterland” and “Dangerous Woman.” It features the humanitarian activist Dan Pallotta, whose Ted Talk “The Way We Think About Charity is Dead Wrong” was viewed more than 17 million times and has inspired conversations about how charities can be more effective and how we can support them.
An opportunity to address our own bias and overhaul the way we think about charities, the film expands the conversation including interviews with Scott Harrison (Charity Water), Dorri McWhorter (President and CEO Ymca of Chicago, Advisor First Women’s Bank), Steve Nardizzi,...

“That which scares me ultimately will be the thing I’m drawn to,” observed Mark Mylod, director and executive producer of HBO/Max’s Succession, not necessarily intending to get philosophical during The Hollywood Reporter‘s Director Emmy Roundtable. But fear, it turns out, is a major motivator for six of the top TV helmers working right now. Meeting over Zoom in May, the filmmakers behind the past year’s most acclaimed episodes — including Mylod, Paris Barclay (Netflix’s Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Liz Garbus (Showtime’s Yellowjackets), Peter Hoar (HBO/Max’s The Last of Us), Karyn Kusama (Prime Video’s Dead Ringers and Yellowjackets) and Jake Schreier (Netflix’s Beef) — kept returning to the career choices that scared (and inspired) them during their hour together. They also got frank about stints in director jail, why artificial intelligence isn’t just a threat to writers and, speaking...

Exclusive: Christina Anthony (Mixed-ish), Ray Santiago (Ash vs. Evil Dead) and Melanie J. Newby (Halt & Catch Fire) are set as series regulars opposite Amber Ruffin in NBC comedy pilot Non-Evil Twin from Universal Television.
Written by Ruffin and Kenny Smith, the multi-camera pilot stars Ruffin playing the dual roles of twin sisters Angie and Amber. Angie is the ruthless CEO of AngieCorp, who is as heartless as she is rich. Angie instills fear in everyone she meets, except her caring sister, Amber, who only sees the good in her. Amber—a pushover when it comes to Angie—is forced to step in as the leader of AngieCorp, a Fortune 500 company, despite knowing little about business and even less about the way her sister has been running the corporation.
Anthony will play Christina, Angie’s assistant/acolyte who believes she’s the smartest person in the room and easily annoyed by others.

Yellowjackets season 2 will begin filming in Vancouver later this month, and the Showtime series is adding new cast members at a steady pace as the production start date draws near. Last week, it was announced that Lauren Ambrose (Servant) will be playing the adult version of the character Van Palmer. A couple days ago, we learned that Simone Kessell (Obi-Wan Kenobi) had been cast to play the adult Lottie Matthews. Now Variety reports that Elijah Wood (the Lord of the Rings trilogy) has also been cast in Yellowjackets season 2. Wood is taking on the “season-long guest starring role” of Walter, “a dedicated Citizen Detective who will challenge Misty (Christina Ricci) in ways she won’t see coming.”

Last week, it was announced that Lauren Ambrose (Servant) was joining the cast of the Showtime series Yellowjackets to play the adult version of the character Van Palmer, who is played as a teenager on the show by Liv Hewson (Santa Clarita Diet). Now the adult version of another character has been cast: Variety reports that Simone Kessell (Obi-Wan Kenobi) has signed on to play the adult Lottie Matthews.
Courtney Eaton (Mad Max: Fury Road) plays the teenage Lottie. Variety explains that Lottie “emerged as the central antagonist of the show in the first season of Yellowjackets. A rich kid whose parents furnished her soccer team with a private plane in order for the Yellowjackets to travel to nationals, Lottie had been forced to go off her anti-psychotic medication after that plane crashed in the wilderness, where the show’s 1996 timeline is set.“

Karyn Kusama is a director that everyone here at The Playlist absolutely adores. From her incredible debut with “Girl Fight” back in 2000 to her grossly underrated “The Invitation,” we just love everything she puts her unique twist on. Yes, even “Jennifer’s Body,’ which is a great cult classic. And with her latest film, “Destroyer,” it appears she’s ready to once and for all put her name on the list of some of the greatest filmmakers working today.

Way back in 1979, Ridley Scott’s “Alien” brought us our first genuine female action hero in Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley. Despite the three sequels that followed, Ripley proved to be something of an outlier. Until fairly recently, a woman could kill someone in a movie only if she faced brutal punishment afterward, as in Scott’s “Thelma and Louise,” or in the inevitable fates of Bond girls: They could dole out lethal action, but rarely survived.
Today, ass-kicking women are no longer an anomaly or subject to automatic retribution. This weekend, we watched Scarlett Johansson lay waste to her enemies (although not the box office) in “Ghost in the Shell,” following a path blazed by the likes of Linda Hamilton (“Terminator 2: Judgment Day”), Uma Thurman (“Kill Bill”), and Michelle Yeoh (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”). These roles may strike a blow for equality and diversity, but what these women — and...

Scandal fans, are your jaws still on the floor after last week’s game-changing final moment? Would you vote for Olivia’s carefully measured, emphatic “Yes” as the single most satisfying word ever uttered in the history of Shondaland? While the latter question is up for debate (though I can’t imagine a more appealing alternative), there’s no denying Liv’s shocking, long-awaited public confession to being Fitz’s mistress has left plenty of highly entertaining carnage in its wake. Let’s recap, and then discuss!

Jess and Cece both want the same purse in this week’s New Girl.
You wouldn’t think that would lead the ladies, who have been friends since childhood, to a fight of cage-match proportions… but it does.
In this exclusive sneak peek at the episode, titled “Girl Fight,” star Hannah Simone details how the besties communicate their anger (apparently, “double syringes” are emoji you never want to see) and recounts how refreshing it was to take a punch to the face during filming.
“I don’t get to say that very often,” Simone muses.

I listen to feminists and all these radical gals – most of them are failures. They’ve blown it. Some of them have been married, but they married some Casper Milquetoast who asked permission to go to the bathroom. These women just need a man in the house. That’s all they need. Most of the feminists need a man to tell them what time of day it is and to lead them home. And they blew it and they’re mad at all men. Feminists hate men. They’re sexist. They hate men – that’s their problem. – Jerry Falwell

Ever find yourself jonesing for some sexy girl-on-girl combat, but short a few dozen clams of Dead or Alive‘s asking price? Well, I won’t say you’re not alone, because you might be, but at least now you have other options. Enter Girl Fight, the $10 all-female arcade fighter from the classy gentlemen at Microprose. And yes, I think it’s a fair assumption that most of their staff are men.
From what I understand, Girl Fight‘s premise centers around a semi-random assemblage of deadly, “femme fatale” women who have all been kidnapped by The Foundation, a majorly sketchy science group hoping to weaponize said womens’ psionic fighting abilities. Basically, these guys are going around the globe plucking hot psychic babes from their natural habitat and plugging them into some odd matrix called The Mainframe. Hey, don’t look at me – check the Girl Fight wiki if you’re so damn confused.

Plus, some really pretty girls dance around the set, cause that’s apparently what happens at these illegal street races. Right? Close enough, I guess. Check out three new featurettes for “Fast and Furious 6″, racing into theaters against “The Hangover 3″ next week. Won’t that be some fight? I’m curious to see who wins… Since Dom and Brian’s Rio heist toppled a kingpin’s empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. Who would've thought that Roger Corman's 1975 cult classic indie pic 'Death Race 2000' starring a still fairly unknown Sylvester Stallone would one day spawn not only a remake, but a franchise?! Well, low and behold, we're now up to Part 3 in the series as 'Death Race: Inferno' hits Blu-Ray and DVD on January 22nd. The good news? Paul W.S. And if you're ready for this new movie in the series, well then hopefully these 5 clips will get you pumped for the release. Check 'em out below along with the synopsis after the film clips.

Scottish writer Mark Millar – the man behind the original Kick-Ass comic – updated his website recently, and with it emerged some juicy little details surrounding the progress on Jeff Wadlow’s bound-to-be-bloody sequel Kick-Ass 2.
Here’s what he had to say:
“Shot down to England last week for some time on the Kick-Ass 2 set. Three of the days were press interviews, all embargoed until a few weeks before release, but the rest was just sitting around and drinking tea while superheroes beat the shit out of super-villains in the big finale (as you’ll have read in the book).
As a producer, I’ve been watching a lot of this in the dropbox as it happens, but nothing compares to seeing Mother Russia (in the flesh) pounding Hit-Girl in the face in what We Know is going to win MTV’s Best Fight Scene Award already. I’m not kidding…...

Not too long ago I asked the Sound On Sight staff to choose their ten favourite films of all time. The result led to mixed reactions (both by staff and readers), and some angry feedback. But how could any of us select only ten films from the thousands we’ve seen and walk away happy with the results. The fact is, of all the films which received a vote, it was those more widely available who made the cut. In other words, films such as The Godfather and Pulp Fiction stood a greater chance of receiving more ballots than say, obscure foreign gems.
My biggest disappointment with the picks, although only ten films were spotlighted, was the lack of votes for films directed by women. Could it be that none of us here at Sound On Sight valued great directors such as Claire Denis, Agnès Varda, Chantal Akerman or Lina Wertmüller?...

Ah Lifetime, the network for women that creates features about women being abused, beaten, murdered, cheated on, or doing their best in a single parent situation. You have to start wondering if someone at Lifetime fails to understand exactly how one empowers women. Is the strategy to produce a number of true cautionary tales that will hopefully help women recognize the bad situations they're in? I have to believe there's an easier way to do that than two films, starring Anne Heche or Jennifer Grey, where a girl receives a beating broadcast online or a bunch of teens robbing celebrities much to a single mother's chagrin. Seriously Lifetime, what's going on over there?
Whatever the case may be, we're giving away the Lifetime movies Girl Fight and The Bling Ring on DVD, and if you want to find out how to win them just keep reading.

Proving that the only "Beautiful Liar" she has a problem with is the media, Katy Perry took to Twitter to lash out at the avalanche of feud reports sparked in the wake of the perceived diss she lobbed against Beyoncé and Shakira's years-old duet during a radio interview this week. While she undeniably told BBC Radio 1 that particular tune wasn't something she hoped to recreate when she eventually collaborated with Rihanna, the jump from that to straight-out dissing her pop star peers is a leap that's gotten Perry tweeting mad. In the past, Anne Heche was more famous for her turbulent private life than for her acting career. But times have certainly changed for the 42-year-old actress, who persevered through a high-profile romance with Ellen DeGeneres and a nervous breakdown.
Heche not only returns as Jessica, Thomas Jane’s ex-wife on Showtime’s "Hung." She's also in another ripped-from-the-headlines movie on Lifetime called "Girl Fight," which premieres on Oct. 3.
The fiercely intelligent and candid actress spoke to HuffPost Celebrity about her latest roles and how thankful she is for where her career has taken her.
What is "Girl Fight" about?
It’s pretty special because it came to me and James [Tupper, Heche's partner] as a joint offer. I think [Lifetime] needed a family feeling to capture what this movie’s about. It’s about a girl who gets beat up by some of her friends for the benefit of doing a YouTube video.
