Since the original Die Hard took the world by storm in 1988, it has inspired countless sequels and knock-offs. Often built around the same basic premise, these films have become a sub-genre in their own right. From Die Hard 2: Die Harder set in an airport, to Under Siege on a naval vessel, Passenger 57 on a plane, and even Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down in the White House, the formula has been repeated in various locations, with a lone hero taking on the bad guys and saving the hostages.

Back in July, it was announced that Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur (Coda) had signed on to star in the horror film Primate. Since then, Johnny Sequoyah (pictured above) of Dexter: New Blood has signed on to star in the film with Kostur – and now, as the project draws closer to production, Deadline has revealed that ten more actors have joined the cast. Here’s the line-up: Jessica Alexander (Amadeus), Victoria Wyant (My Fault: London), Benjamin Cheng (d’Illusion: The Houdini Musical), Gia Hunter (Sherlock and Daughter), Miguel Torres Umba (National Theatre co-production Kin), Kae Alexander (Ready Player One), Tienne Simon (Grime Kids), Charlie Mann (Lazarus), newcomer Amina Abdi, and Albert Magashi (National Theatre Live: Dear England).
Unfortunately, we’re not able to tell you anything about the roles these actors will be playing, because all plot and character details are currently being kept under wraps.

At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Now Deadline has an update on Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount, as they’re reporting that the studio has given the greenlight to the Hamada-produced horror film Primate, which has Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur attached to star.
Kotsur won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film Coda, becoming the first deaf male actor and only the second deaf actor overall to win an Oscar. Kotsur’s other credits include Wild Prairie Rose, No Ordinary Hero, Universal Signs, The Number 23, and episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Mandalorian, Criminal Minds,...

Zyzzyx Road holds the title for the lowest-grossing movie ever, making just $30 at the box office. The film was made specifically for distribution overseas, but a Screen Actors Guild contract required a U.S. theatrical release. Other movies like Storage 24 and The Objective also had extremely low box office grosses, but Zyzzyx Road remains at the bottom.
As Hollywood is full of billion-dollar blockbuster franchises, it may come as a surprise that the lowest-grossing movie of all time made just $30. Shockingly, that movie was not some obscure film but rather a 2006 feature starring actors who were, at the time, well-known. The thriller Zyzzyx Road featured Katherine Heigl, who was already receiving acclaim for playing the fan-favorite Grey's Anatomy character, Izzie Stevens, at the time, and Tom Sizemore, who had supporting roles in several blockbusters at that point of his career, including Saving Private Ryan, Red Planet, Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down.

Ooo, so what’s this “new era” coming for the denizens of Downton Abbey, 1920s-Yorkshire’s nicest feudal hangover? I never truly thought it would be the guillotines my reading of the prequel had inspired in my imagination, though a girl’s gotta dream. But it would not be anachronistic to hope for the Great Depression hitting the Earl of Grantham’s interests hard. Or perhaps soak-the-rich taxation has finally come for Downton, forcing them to open the house to *gasp* paying visitors?
Alas, that last is the closest to comeuppance that will descend upon the sprawling Crawley family and their impossibly happy-with-their-station servants. In the mildest sort of meta one could hope for from this franchise, the moving pictures have come to Downton Abbey! Film director Jack Barber and stars Guy Dexter and Myrna Dalgleish are making a glamorous romantic drama and they need a grand house for the shoot.

This week, British actor, writer and director Noel Clarke has made headlines after being accused of groping, harassment and bullying by 20 women.
Clarke played Mickey Smith in “Doctor Who” from 2005 to 2010 and starred as Sam in the films “Kidulthood,” “Adulthood” and “Brotherhood,” which he wrote and directed, intent on bringing more representations of working-class Britain to screen. Clarke also writes, produces and plays Aaron Bishop in the British police procedural series “Bulletproof,” alongside close friend Ashley Walters.
Clarke made his film debut in 2003’s “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” and has since starred in movies including “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Centurion,” “4.3.2.1.,” “Fast Girls,” “Storage 24,” “I Am Soldier,” “The Anomaly,” “I Kill Giants,” “Mute,” “10×10,” “The Corrupted,” “Twist” and “Sas: Red Notice.”
In 2015, Clarke founded the London-based production company Unstoppable Film and Television with Jason Maza, eventually securing investment from super-indie All3Media, which owns “Fleabag” producer Two Brothers and “1917” outfit Neal Street Productions.

For this writer, it’s been really fun to see the evolution of filmmaker Johannes Roberts’ career over the last seven years, from Storage 24 (the first movie of his I ever covered that showed great promise of a director who embraced what makes the genre so great) to The Other Side of the Door (which really took me by surprise) to the breakout hit of 2017, 47 Meters Down, to last year’s The Strangers: Prey at Night (which I completely Loved). And now we have his latest, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, which has Roberts heading back into shark-infested waters for the sequel, which pits a group of unsuspecting teens against the ocean’s greatest predators, resulting in yet another harrowing excursion in aquatic horror that’s also a fun summertime popcorn movie to boot.
The setup for Uncaged is pretty straightforward: at the beginning, we’re introduced to step-sisters...

He scared viewers with sharks in 47 Meters Down and spooked horror fans with some familiar masked faces in The Strangers: Prey at Night, and now filmmaker Johannes Roberts will look to bring his unique style to the Resident Evil movie franchise as the reboot's writer and director.
Variety reports that Roberts has been "hired by Constantin Film" to write and direct the Resident Evil movie reboot based on Capcom's popular video game franchise that has revolutionized the gaming world since its launch in 1996 with its unique survival horror gameplay that pits players against zombies and other mutated threats of the living dead variety. As reported by Variety, production on the reboot is being eyed to begin as early as 2019 with "a new cast" in front of the camera.

Vertical Entertainment has released the first trailer, poster and photo for 10x10, a new thriller slated to arrive in theaters and on VOD formats April 13. While Luke Evans often plays both heroic and villainous characters alike, his Lewis character in this thriller is quite methodical, plotting his revenge for months, waiting for just the right time to strike, abducting Cathy and holding her against her will in a 10x10 soundproof room, with no way out. As you can see below, there is much more than meets the eye to both the abductor and abductee.
Lewis (Luke Evans) is an outwardly ordinary guy, but in reality he is hiding an obsession, revenge, against Cathy (Kelly Reilly). Just a few days from opening her new business, Cathy's fresh start is interrupted when she is attacked, kidnapped and locked in a room. She assumes the kidnapper wants her body or her life, but he is after something simpler.

The Strangers arrived in 2008 as an insular, tonally-terrifying, horror film outing, centering on a young couple (Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman,) who are stalked in her remotely-located childhood summer home by three masked assailants. The killer shark movie has seen a resurgence in recent years with the Sharknado franchise spewing straight to streaming site sequels, while the schlockier Sharkenstein, Dino-Shark, Jurassic Shark and Shark Exorcist have also plagued home viewing platforms. Some manage to make it to the big screen; take last year’s The Shallows, which earned reputable reviews and Us box office (for its budget), while 2018 will see Jason Statham hopefully chinning a Carcharodon Carcharias in Jon Turtletuab’s giant mutant shark flick, Meg.
Meanwhile, Altitude and E-One (among others) deliver this derivative killer shark flick 47 Metres Down. More along the lines of Open Water than 2-Headed Shark Attack, co-writer/director Johannes Roberts’ film twitches awkwardly on the big screen like a suicidal haddock before wilting into dung sodden algae.

When we were invited along to the set of Johannes Roberts’ survival thriller 47 Metres Down, a film set in Mexico, it took us by surprise somewhat when we were informed it was in fact Basildon where we’d be spending the day. It does make perfect sense, however, that the shoot takes place in Essex, for it’s the home of the unique Underwater Studio – and it’s here the vast majority of this narrative unfolds, on the bed of the ocean.
The premise is simple – two sisters, played by Mandy Moore and Claire Holt, get trapped in a cage on the sea bed, 47 Metres Down (of course) and with a dwindling supply of oxygen. Naturally you would just assume they could swim upwards and ensure their safety – but there are sharks circling. For Roberts, the man behind The Other Side of the Door and Storage 24...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Originally slated for a VOD release, and it feels like it: the few moments of simple tension quickly dissipate in the murky and not very shark-infested depths. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Though it seems the obvious explanation for its existence, 47 Meters Down is not, in fact, a cheaply assembled response to the success of last summer’s terrific Blake Lively-versus-shark thriller The Shallows. Instead, a movie that was completed and slated for a straight-to-vod last August morphed into a theatrical release… very likely in response to the success of The Shallows. Be not fooled, though: there may be double the number of women in jeopardy in 47 but much less than half the amount of shark or suspense. On vacay in Mexico, American...

Formerly titled In the Deep, the first trailer for 47 Meters Down has been released. This title, from Dimension Films, focuses on two young women and their first cage dive. Swimming with sharks, Lisa and Kate have chosen their initial dive poorly. This title, from director Johannes Roberts (Storage 24), stars Mandy Moore, Claire Holt and Matthew Modine. A preview of the film's June launch is available here. The official synopsis begins with a break-up. Lisa (Moore) and Kate (Holt) decide to head to Mexico, to chase away heartbreak. Once on the sandy beaches, they make a potentially fatal mistake, by trusting a shady dive instructor. Events take a worse turn when their cage breaks and they are left 47 meters below the surface, with their oxygen running out. There is no escape, outside of facing several Great White Sharks. The latest artwork for the film is hosted above. It is one of the weakest graphics,...

British director Johannes Roberts is bringing Stephen King's Hearts In Atlantis to the big screen...
Variety reports that director Johannes Roberts (The Other Side Of The Door, Storage 24) will adapt Stephen King's novella, Hearts In Atlantis, for the big screen. Roberts is adapting the story with frequent collaborator Ernest Riera, who co-wrote The Other Side Of The Door and shark thriller 47 Meters Down.
This new project is not to be confused with the 2001 film Hearts In Atlantis, which starred Anthony Hopkins in a retelling of two other novellas in Stephen King's collection of the same name. That movie adapted Low Men In Yellow Coats and Heavenly Shades Of Night Are Falling.
Hearts In Atlantis is a coming-of-age story that takes place at the University of Maine during the Vietnam War era. Main character Peter lives in an all-male dormitory where all of the...

From Doctor Who’s Mickey to a one-man film industry, and Brotherhood. So why doesn’t Noel Clarke get more respect?
Over the past weekend, the final part of Noel Clarke’s The Hood trilogy of movies, Brotherhood, hit big in the UK. The movie has earned £1.98m in its first seven days on release, on just 220 screens. It did so in spite of Clarke at one stage struggling to raise the finance for the film (only two companies ended up putting in tangible offers), and also in spite of it being eight years since the release of its predecessor, Adulthood.
In a summer of box office disappointments, Brotherhood has offered a very welcome contrast.
The box office numbers were being reported as a surprise, and not unreasonably. Rounding off a trilogy that’s been off screen for many years is a gamble, and a trilogy too...

While it may not necessarily be a contender for “Best Horror Film of 2016”, The Other Side of the Door is still a solid supernatural thriller that showcases its Indian backdrop marvelously, features a strong performance from The Walking Dead alum Sarah Wayne Callies, and does an admirable job of trying to bring something new to a very familiar premise.
At the start of The Other Side of the Door, we meet Maria (Callies) and Michael (Jeremy Sisto), who have been transplanted from the States to India as part of Michael’s job as an antiques dealer. Once Maria reveals she’s expecting their first child, the couple decides to officially make Mumbai their home and raise their family abroad. This supernatural tale about a grieving mother mixes high-tension moments with patient characterisation to form a clever, capable chiller
Shades of Don’t Look Now and the Orpheus myth in this not-half-bad supernatural chiller from British co-writer and director Johannes Roberts, who gave us F, a horror-thriller about a schoolteacher under threat; he also directed Noel Clarke’s script for Storage 24. The Other Side of the Door is about Maria (Sarah Wayne Callies) and Michael (Jeremy Sisto), a married American couple in Mumbai. When one of their children is killed in a car accident they are devastated, but their sorrowing housekeeper, Piki (Suchitra Pillai), tells the mother there is a way for her to get closure: if she goes to a certain ruined temple on a certain moonlit night, she will be able to talk with her son’s ghost through the locked door before he vanishes for ever into the next world.

The film explores how the power of grief can cause people to do the unthinkable and transports viewers to Mumbai, India, a beautiful and surreal setting for Roberts’ haunting tale of a mother who will stop at nothing to reunite with her young son after he dies in a horrific accident.
At a recent press day, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with both Roberts and Callies about The Other Side of the Door, and the duo chatted about how the location ended up changing Roberts’ original story, the challenges they faced during production and more. Dammit Johannes Roberts, why did you have to disappoint so? I absolutely Adore his 2010 film F (aka The Expelled) and – even though its a Noel Clarke film - Storage 24 wasn’t that bad either. So hearing that Roberts had the chance to helm a studio movie, a horror at that, set in India with its vast religious culture and strange chaotic lifestyle, And produced by Alexandre Aja… It’s safe to say I was excited for The Other Side of the Door. Even more so after Sarah Wayne Callies was cast in the lead – I’m a huge fan of hers, ever since the Prison Break days. So what went wrong?

There have been a number of storage-styled horror films of late. There was the simply titled Storage (2009), then Self Storage (2013) and then the sci-fi infused Storage 24 (2014). This time, your trip to the local storage facility takes place with Matt Winn's The Hoarder. Starring Mischa Barton ("The O.C.") and Robert Knepper ("Prison Break"), The Hoarder involves a break-in of a storage facility and the strange cast of characters who lie behind these locked doors. A trailer for the film was released in the middle of 2015. Then, the film was released in Germany in late 2015. Now, horror film fans can take a look at the film's release, which is scheduled for April 2016. The official synopsis focuses on Ella (Barton). She decides to break into her fiancé’s storage locker. But, things do not go according to plan. An unspeakable monstrosity has taken residence in one of the other lockers. Meanwhile,...

Matthew Modine has joined the cast of underwater thriller 47 Meters Down.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, he will join the already-cast Mandy Moore and Vampire Diaries star Claire Holt.
The film focuses on sisters Kate and Lisa, who find themselves in trouble when the diving cage they are using to view Great White sharks in Mexico breaks free from the boat and plummets to the ocean floor.
The girls are trapped with less than an hour of oxygen left in their tanks and have to find a way back to their boat through 47 metres of shark-infested waters.
Modine will play a character called Taylor in the film, which will be directed by Storage 24's Johannes Roberts from his own script, penned with Ernest Riera.
James Harris and Mark Lane will be acting as producers on the thriller.

Actress Mandy Moore has finalized a deal to star in Dimension Films' underwater thriller 47 Meters Down. Dimension acquired 47 Meters Down back in April 2014, but we haven't heard about any movement on the project until now. The plot has been compared to the sci-fi thriller Gravity, only in an underwater environment.
The story revolves around two sisters, Kate (Mandy Moore) and Lisa, who become trapped at the bottom of the ocean when a diving expedition to observe sharks goes horribly wrong. When the cable attaching the observation cage to the boat breaks and the cage sinks to the bottom of the ocean, the sisters must figure out a way to get back to safety battling injuries, lack of oxygen, and, worst of all, blood thirsty, great white sharks. No other cast members have been confirmed at this time.
British filmmaker Johannes Roberts (Storage 24) is directing from his own screenplay.

Hard though this is to believe, it's been more than four years since Noel Clarke last directed a movie. He had a triple whammy of writer-producer credits in 2012 with Fast Girls, Storage 24 and The Knot. Now he's back behind the camera, parlaying his Storage 24 and Star Trek Into Darkness experience into a low-budget but high-concept science fiction thriller.
Clarke plays the lead role of Ryan, a former soldier who finds himself captive in the back of a van and only able to stay conscious in bursts of precisely 9 minutes and 47 seconds.
Digital Spy sat down with Ian Somerhalder on the film's London set last summer to discuss the joys of shooting sci-fi on a shoestring, the film's Memento-like premise, and his work with the Ian Somerhalder Foundation.

Most commonly recognisable embodying the more frightening, deranged members of society – it’s refreshing to see the talented Irish actor Ned Dennehy take on something of a lighter role, as he plays Julian in James Rouse’s directorial debut, Downhill.
We spoke to the actor ahead of the film’s release, as he discusses his enjoyment playing such a role, though admits he had hoped it may have been a little more dour than what ended up in the final edit. In a film that explores four old friends reuniting to embark on a coast-to-coast walk, Dennehy tells us whether the film has encouraged him to get in touch with any old friends…
At the beginning, Julian seems like a harmless, charming drunk. But he’s quite a nuanced character, and a fascinating one to get your teeth into?

The new official one-sheet for the Jonathan Glazer helmed sci-fi thriller 'Under the Skin' has landed. The poster features the welcoming face of lead Scarlett Johansson ('The Avengers') amongst the stars. It's simplistic style resonates a rather 80's sci-fi feel and what with Glazer behind the camera we're sure to be in for a visual feast when it hits theatres in the UK next month. Johansson stars as a 'Species'-like alien who preys on humans using her 'voracious sexuality'. 'Under the Skin' also stars Antonia Campbell-Hughes ('Storage 24') and Paul Brannigan. Low-budget British horror movie Storage 24 is Us's lowest grossing film of 2013
Storage 24: four star review
A British horror set in a self-storage facility from actor and film-maker Noel Clarke was the poorest performing movie at the Us box office last year with a paltry £44 ($72) haul. A spokesperson for the production said the £44 figure was so low because Storage 24 was released on only one screen for one day in the Us due to the terms of a TV deal.
Storage 24 was shot on a reportedly tiny budget of around £1.6m and was Clarke's first film to appear in American cinemas following his cameo appearance in Star Trek film Into Darkness last year. The former Doctor Who star is well known to British audiences for his work behind the camera, and in front of it, on the popular 2006 urban drama Kidulthood and its 2008 sequel Adulthood.

A collection of original fiction based on our spooky storytelling event is now available for your Kindle
A few months ago, we gathered some of our favourite writers together in a dark basement to tell spooky stories. The event, called Den of Eek!, was a great success: we sold out the entire venue, made loads of money for charity, and had fun at the same time.
Why are we telling you this now? It’s not just to taunt you if you couldn’t make it. It’s because now we’re publishing an ebook of all the stories read that night. It features twelve short stories by twelve brilliant people – here’s the rundown:
"Grindr" by Clayton Littlewood (author of Dirty White Boy and Goodbye to Soho)
"The Double Walkers" by Leila Johnston (editor of The Literary Platform and author of Enemy...
