It's been an up-and-down couple of weeks for Netflix shows. We've seen some big renewals, including The Perfect Couple, Beauty in Black, Xo, Kitty, and Running Point. But, the biggest news was the shocking cancellation of The Recruit starring Noah Centineo.

We knew The Recruit might be in trouble way back at the end of 2024 when Netflix confirmed the show's second season would premiere one week after The Night Agent season 2. Things looked good for The Recruit out of the gate, but Netflix made the disappointing decision to cancel the show after two seasons. The series only lasted two weeks on the Netflix Top 10 shows list in the United States.

In recognition of Noah Centineo’s status as one of Netflix’s top young stars, he served as a SAG Awards Ambassador for the streamer’s January 23 awards show telecast. Ten days later, Netflix canceled Centineo’s series, The Recruit, after two seasons.

The cancellation was surprising in itself and in its swiftness; it came less than five weeks after Season 2 dropped on January 30. While Netflix rewards breakout newcomers with quick renewals – most recently comedy Running Point earlier this week was picked up for Season 2 just seven days after its debut – the streamer usually takes awhile for its cancellation decisions, analyzing the long tail of a show’s performance before making the call.

In one of Netflix’s quickest renewals for a first-year series, the streamer has picked up basketball comedy Running Point for a second season.

The news comes just a week after the show, starring Kate Hudson, was released Feb. 27 and hours after Netflix canceled drama The Recruit after two seasons. Meanwhile, fellow Netflix freshman comedy series No Good Deed is still awaiting word on its fate almost three months after its premiere.

In its debut weekend, Running Point scored 9.3 million views and ranked in the Top 10 across 83 countries.

After earning $4.2 million during its fifth full weekend in theaters, Dog Man has now successfully passed $110 million at the worldwide box office, sitting at $113.1 million total at the time of writing. The Pete Davidson-led animated flick has earned $84 million from domestic markets and $29 million internationally, and it currently stands as the second-biggest movie of 2025 at the domestic box office, behind only Captain America: Brave New World. In addition to Pete Davidson, Dog Man also stars Poppy Liu (No Good Deed), Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers), and Lil Rel Howery (Poker Face).

Lisa Kudrow and Brian Cox face a fate even worse than time with their families in the trailer for the horror-comedy movie The Parenting.

The poltergeist feature from director Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins) is set to begin streaming via Max on March 13. Edie Falco, Dean Norris, Nik Dodani, Brandon Flynn, Vivian Bang and Parker Posey round out the ensemble cast.

The Parenting centers on Rohan (Dodani) and Josh (Flynn), a young gay couple who plan a weekend getaway with their families at a country home before realizing that the abode appears to be inhabited by a demon.

“There is something really bad happening in this house,” Flynn declares in the trailer. “I’m stuck in a haunted house with my fucking parents.”

The trailer shows the characters finding an unusual method of subduing a possessed dog. Additionally, Cox is seen strolling naked through the house for reasons that remain unclear.

Netflix announced in early 2023 that it would adapt the first two books by author A.J. Quinell into an exciting new thriller series called Man on Fire. In May 2022, exactly a month after the first season of Heartstopper premiered on Netflix, the coming-of-age romantic comedy-drama received a rare two-season renewal by the streamer. Almost five months after Season 3, the last of the two installments under that deal, dropped on Oct. 3, there is still no word from Netflix on the future of Heartstopper as another half-hour series, No Good Deed, also awaits a renewal decision two and a half months after its Netflix debut.

The streamer’s semi-annual What We Watched viewership data report released today provides more context to the series’ performance beyond Netflix’s weekly Top 10 rankers that may be factoring into the renewal conversations.

Season 3 of Heartstopper amassed 10.9M views from its Oct. 3 release until the end of 2024 to rank #130 among all of Netflix’s programs from June to December last year, according to the report. The show spent two weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10, peaking at #4, vs.

In January 2023, Adrienne King, who played Alice Hardy in the 1980 film, joined the cast in a secret role. Writing for the series began later that month, with Kevin Williamson contributing an episode.

However, in May 2024, Fuller was removed from the project as A24 decided to take a new creative approach. In August 2024, Brad Caleb Kane was named the new showrunner. The show is scheduled to premiere on Halloween 2025.

Blue Bloods has concluded its run, and it’s a shame we didn’t get any of these spinoff ideas!

For fourteen seasons, fans made Blue Bloods one of the biggest hits on CBS. Usually, when a CBS show is that successful and runs so long, it’s only natural they try to make it a franchise. We’ve seen it with NCIS, FBI, and even Fire Country.

Which is why it’s amazing that in all that time, CBS never tried a Blue Bloods spinoff. It’s remarkable that they couldn’t find a way to plan some offshoot show, maybe not on the Reagans but connected to that universe. It’s not like they didn’t have plenty of ideas given the long list of characters and possible storylines.

From a couple of the main characters to some recurring or new ones, the spinoff potential was larger than what fans might think.

Paramount+’s Landman continued its upward trajectory in the first few days of 2025, hitting its best viewing-time mark so far in Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Squid Game had a second straight huge week for Netflix as well.

The Korean hit drew just under 4.6 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5, topping the 4 billion mark again a week after its season two premiere. The series fell by less than 7 percent week-to-week from the 4.92 billion minutes it had for its long-awaited return.

Landman snagged 1.3 billion minutes of watch time in the week leading up to its ninth episode. The Taylor Sheridan series, starring Billy Bob Thornton, has improved its totals in every week since it first hit the rankings in late November.

Squid Game dominated Nielsen’s U.S. ranking of streaming originals for a second straight week since its release of Season 2, with 4.6 billion minutes viewed across 16 episodes, during the week of Dec. 30.

It was announced on Thursday morning that the wildly popular Squid Game will conclude its three-season run on June 27.

Nearly three decades after former high school outcasts Romy and Michele attended their 10-year high school reunion, a sequel to the 1997 movie Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is moving forward at 20th Century Studios. The original film, which is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, starred Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow as Romy White and Michele Weinberger. The titular duo are in talks to reprise their roles in the sequel.

Oscar-winner Sorvino and Emmy-winner Kudrow will also serve as executive producers on the Romy and Michele sequel, which is set to be directed by Tim Federle (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series). Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the movie is expected to start filming in June, likely in Los Angeles.

Sorvino posted to the social media site Threads after news broke about the sequel film, saying “We’re pretty excited about it.”

Nearly 30 years after the release of the ’90s cult hit film “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion,” stars Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are in talks to return for a legacyquel produced by 20th Century Studios.

Released in 1997, the film follows a pair of 29-year-olds who realize they haven’t done much with their lives since graduating high school, and decide to make up a story that they struck it rich after inventing Post-it Notes. The film was released by Touchstone Pictures, a release label established by Disney for films aimed at adult audiences.

Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion is getting a sequel with Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow in final talks to reprise their roles from the 1997 film.

The pair of actresses will also executive produce, and Tim Federle is attached to direct.

Production is eyeing a June start date, potentially in Los Angeles.

The reunion of all reunions was teased back in November 2024 when Sorvino told People that a deal had been made with a director and that she and Kudrow were on board as Eps. Then Kudrow shared in January the update that a “really good” script had been written.

Original scribe Robin Schiff returned to pen the sequel film. She has recently been behind Netflix’s hit series Emily in Paris as an executive producer and showrunner. Veteran producer Laurence Marks will also return after his work on the original film.

The reunion is on.

A sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is moving ahead at 20th Century Studios, with Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow in negotiations to reprise their starring roles. The pair will also serve as executive producers.

Tim Federle, who wrote and directed the Disney+ original movie Better Nate Than Never and who created High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, will direct the feature, which is eyeing a June start date. Sources say the studio is looking to possibly shoot in Los Angeles, but nothing has been set.

Robin Schiff, who wrote the original and is known for showrunning the Neflix hit Emily in Paris, returned to pen the sequel. Laurence Mark, the veteran producer who produced the original, is also back in same role. Barry Kemp, the creator of 1980s series Newhart, is also producing.

Before her unexpected passing in December, Linda Lavin was set to serve as one of the leads of Mid-Century Modern. A new comedy series inspired by The Golden Girls, the show is in the works for a streaming release on Hulu.

On Instagram, Mid-Century Modern co-creator Max Mutchnick shared a post that included a series of images from the filming of an episode of the show. The images reveal other members of the cast dressed up for a memorial service held for Lavin's character, Sybil Schneiderman, confirming how she will be written out of the show moving forward. Per TV Line, Lavin had completed filming on seven of the show's 10 episodes before her passing.

Mutchnick's post stated, "This Week at [Mid-Century Modern] we filmed an episode I never thought we’d have to write — 'Here’s to you Mrs Schneiderman.

Mid-Century Modern co-creator Max Mutchnick has revealed how the late Linda Lavin’s character Sybil Schneiderman will be written off the upcoming Hulu comedy series.

The title of Lavin’s final episode in the show — she filmed seven of ten — reflects that her character dies. Mutchnick shared about bidding both the actress and character farewell below.

The Season 2 debut of “Squid Game” boosted the Netflix series to reach the biggest weekly streaming audience any show has seen in 2024, according to Nielsen’s streaming charts.

With the second installment debuting Dec. 26 on Netflix, “Squid Game” drew 4.92 billion minutes over its two seasons in the interval between Dec. 23 to Dec. 29. Viewership for “Squid Game” was more than double that of Netflix’s “Virgin River,” which scored a whopping 2.25 billion viewing minutes as the second most-watched streaming program of the week.

Dwayne Johnson-led “Red One” also scored an impressive streaming viewership as the holiday movie scored 1.81 billion viewing minutes on Prime Video during the week, clocking in as the third most-watched program of the week. Christmas week brought a bounty of viewing to streaming platforms, with eight titles crossing the billion-minute mark in Nielsen’s streaming ratings. Netflix’s Squid Game, however, stood well apart from the pack.

The Korean hit posted the highest single-week viewing tally for any streaming title in the United States in 2024 with 4.92 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Dec. 23-29. Season two of Squid Game premiered Dec. 26.

The show’s premiere week was the best for any title in two years, in fact — since Wednesday delivered about 5.3 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4, 2022. Squid Game also smashed its own previous high of 3.26 billion minutes during season one’s run in 2021. Netflix had earlier said season two set a worldwide record for a premiere week, based on the streamer’s internal data.

The nominations have been revealed for the 2025 GLAAD Media Awards, and one critically acclaimed LGBTQ+ film is notably absent from the pack of nominees.

The annual awards ceremony will return for a 36th year in 2025. According to GLAAD, it’s goal is to “recognize and honor fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community in an ever-expanding and media landscape.”

On Wednesday (January 22), the organization revealed the crop of nominees that would be honored at the ceremony. While projects such as Wicked and Queer were notably featured, Netflix’s Emilia Perez was left off the list.

The snub comes after GLAAD declared that the movie, which stars Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon, was “not good trans representation” in a November 2024 essay. The story included reviews from transgender film critics and noted that “inauthentic portrayals of trans people are offensive and even dangerous.”

Other nominees include “Wicked,” “Queer,” “Love Lies Bleeding,” “My Old Ass,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Hacks,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” “Fancy Dance,” “Mother of the Bride,” “Baby Reindeer,” “Selling Sunset,” “Queer Eye” and “Real Housewives of New York City.” There are a total of 318 nominees across 33 categories at this year’s Awards.

The GLAAD Media Awards is a yearly event that honors outstanding, accurate and inclusive representations of LGBTQ+ people and issues in film, television, gaming, publishing, stage productions, music, journalism and more.

Two original songs will be added to Wicked: For Good, but these won't do much to level out this sequel's disadvantage. Director Jon M. Chu chose to split the Wicked musical into two parts for his on-screen adaptation, ensuring that every detail of Elphaba and Glinda's stories is done justice. While this proved to be an excellent choice for the first film, the second half, officially called Wicked: For Good, is at a bit of a disadvantage thanks to some differences in the Broadway musical's second act. The addition of new songs is promising, but there is one particular issue that this won't help.

Many of Wicked's most notable songs are in the Broadway show's first act. While there are certainly some bangers in Act 2, such as "No Good Deed" and "For Good," they pack a different sort of punch than "Defying Gravity" or "What Is This Feeling.
