From Alex in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange to Father Murder in Rob Zombie’s 31, Malcolm McDowell has played a wide range of intriguing roles over his illustrious career, including his recent scene-stealing performance as the Chairman in Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050.
With the new Death Race movie now out on home media from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of speaking with the prolific actor to talk about collaborating with Corman, acting in A Clockwork Orange, working with Rob Zombie on 31 and his Halloween films, and if he would ever consider being a part of the new Halloween movie.
You’ve always taken on a diverse range of roles in your career, and Death Race 2050 is certainly no exception. What attracted you to the role of the Chairman of the United Corporations of America?

Catalog From The Beyond is my chance to take a look at movies found a little further down cinematic icons’ filmographies. Most of our favorite directors have plenty to offer beyond the material they’ve become irrevocably linked to over the years. These films may be only slightly lesser-known than their big name counterparts, or they may be movies no one has ever heard of. They might be hidden gems that don’t get enough love, or they may be titles that jump out of the horror genre.
Back in 1931, Universal Studios gave the world its very first horror icon in Bela Lugosi. His turn in Dracula introduced the horror genre as a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood, and Lugosi’s depiction of Transylvania’s most infamous import set the bar for which all other depictions would be measured against. While Lugosi and Dracula have become inextricably linked,...

Immediately after my 31 screening, Rob Zombie revealed how it only took a matter of seconds for his film’s wicked competition to materialize as an idea. This explains the chewy, undercooked nature of Zombie’s The Most Dangerous Game homage, which delivers buckets of grossness and a story that lacks a single spec of conviction. It’s death for death’s sake if you will, perverted by misogyny and told through rotting teeth. No one is safe, nothing is a sacred and life is belittled by Zombie’s bleakest endeavor yet, which is far from a pulpy-but-still-kinda-fun grindhouse experience. Think characters you don’t care about being hunted by villains you don’t understand – hate both the player and the game, you won’t be the only one.

It's been three long years since director Rob Zombie's last movie, The Lords of Salem, but for those awaiting this horror filmmaker's return, you won't have to wait much longer. 31 was undoubtedly made for those of us who have enjoyed Zombie’s work over the years. It may not be as ambitious as The Lords of Salem or as epic as The Devil’s Rejects but, by and large, it’s a ton of blood-soaked fun that gives us real characters to connect with, introduces us to some incredibly twisted assassins and goes for broke at every possible turn.
The story feels like Zombie’s own horror-fied version of The Running Man (with a bit of a Kubrickian flavor to it) and features breakout performances from Richard Brake and Jeff Daniel Phillips. Folks who aren’t into Zombie’s work probably won’t enjoy 31, but any film that gives the amazing Meg Foster the opportunity to wield a chainsaw like a total badass is aces in my book.

31 is an upcoming independent horror film written and directed by Rob Zombie. The film was crowdfunded online two times at fanbacked.com. There’s just something I love about a Rob Zombie movie; he’s fearless and seems to make movies he would want to watch, I dig that. Here’s what the plot of 31 looks like:...

The 2016 Sundance Film Festival decided to drop a little pre-Thanksgiving treat this year, choosing to announce the slate of midnight movies premiering at the festival this January. Notable stand-outs include Kevin Smith's Yoga Hosers (pictured above), starring Smith and Johnny Depp's daughters as a pair of convenience store clerks who uncover some ancient evil buried beneath their store (Smith says its like Clueless meets Gremlins), as well as Rob Zombie's 31, in which the musician-turned-director returns to the Halloween holiday for another tale involving five friends held hostage in a place called Murder World. Check out the films below. 31 / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Rob Zombie) — Five friends are kidnapped on the day...

As we near the end of the calendar year, there is still plenty to look forward to in cinema – and not just the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December. Yes, as we barrel down on the industry’s undisputed purple patch, our local theaters will soon become brimming with awards contenders each out to stake a claim for that coveted Oscar trophy.

It's not just "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and the awards season that will be taking up headline space between now and the end of the year — there is also the Sundance Film Festival. Before we've barely had time to recover from the upcoming onslaught of year-end honors and a return to the galaxy far, far away, the movie world will pivot their attention to Park City, and organizers have unveiled their Midnight Movie Lineup. The titles certain to grab some major attention before a frame is shown are Kevin Smith's "Yoga Hosers" and Rob Zombie's "31." The former will mark Smith's first time back to Sundance since his infamous unveiling and (sorta fake) auction for "Red State." This time around he's bringing along Johnny Depp, the actor's daughter, Justin Long, and more for the ride. Meanwhile, Zombie's new movie takes place in Murder World and has creepy clowns.

A change of pace for Sundance Film Festival, before we get their competition films (and much more), they’ve first unveiled their midnight line-up for 2016. Among the notable titles are the latest films from Rob Zombie and Kevin Smith, 31 and Yoga Hosers, respectively. However, what keeps me coming back to Park City are the surprises, so there’s also a handful of features from relatively unknown directors that have caught our eye, including Carnage Park and Under the Shadow. Check out the line-up below, along with debut images, and return for our coverage in around two months.

Is it really almost time for Sundance again? For the last few weeks, I've been discussing Sundance strategy with Richard Rushfield, my editor-in-chief. He and I are attending at least part of the festival together, and it's going to be a very different year for us. HitFix looks different than it did even a year ago, and the way we approach festivals in general is going to be different starting in 2016. That doesn't mean I'll abandon the things that I think are interesting about a fest. I've always been drawn to the midnight programming at the different festivals I attend, and I'm intrigued by the differences in the way each section is programmed. I think the king of the midnight sections is, without question, Colin Geddes. His Midnight Madness selections may not always work for me, but there is a personal touch to the way he curates the ten nights...

Special Mention: The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
Directed by Dario Argento
Screenplay by Dario Argento
1970, Italy
Genre: Giallo
One of the most self-assured directorial debuts of the 70’s was Dario Argento’s The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. Not only was it a breakthrough film for the master of Giallo, but it was also a box office hit and had critics buzzing, regardless if they liked it or not. Although Argento would go on to perfect his craft in later films, The Bird With The Crystal Plumage went a long way in popularizing the Giallo genre and laid the groundwork for later classics like Deep Red. A difficult film to discuss without spoiling many of its most impressive and famous scenes, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage is a fairly straightforward murder mystery, albeit with many twists, turns and one of the best surprise endings of all time. We're not sure to what extent this gruesome looking guy goes in dismembering his victims. But he's certainly a handsome devil.
