Exclusive: Adam Barth has left his role as Director of Co-Productions, Development and Acquisitions at European distributor Eccho Rights and its parent Night Train Media.

We’ve got word of the news less than a week ahead of MIPCOM Cannes, where Eccho Rights will be shopping Safe Harbor, the buzzy crime drama from Ozark co-creator Mark Williams. Barth will remain as an exec producer on the show.

Barth has been with Eccho Rights since 2021, having joined after exiting Nent Studios UK (aka Drg), where he was SVP for Emea. Further back, he worked at New Media Vision, acting as an executive producer on international formats adaptations of shows such as NBC procedural Mysteries of Laura.

Eccho confirmed his departure to Deadline this week.

BBC Studios has announced the titles coming to BritBox in August 2024, which include everything from new BritBox Originals to classic British fare. BritBox is a digital video subscription service offering the largest collection of British TV in the U.S. and Canada.

The August lineup features season one of The Change, starring Bridge Christie, season two of Romesh Ranganthan’s family dramedy Avoidance, and seasons three and four of Killing Eve, starring Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh.

BritBox is also adding two royal programs this August: The White Princess (also starring Comer) and My King Charles, a documentary investigating the monarch’s complicated path to the throne. BritBox crime Original Granite Harbour, starring Romario Simpson and Hanna Donaldson, returns for its second season on August 15.

In two strategic appointments as co-production becomes the order of the day, Secuoya Studios has launched a new European Sales and Global Co-Production Division, overseen by Brendan Fitzgerald, ex Sony Pictures Entertainment senior exec who joined Secuoya Studios as its CEO at the beginning of the year.

The Division’s first director will be María García-Castrillón, who has been named its Head of International Co-Productions. Former Grupo Boomerang TV’s Camino de Valcárcel has joined the division as an executive.

Announced on the eve of Conecta Fiction, the Europe-Americas co-production forum, the new division launch and first appointments come as the TV industry as a whole is turning to co-production to not only counteract spiralling production costs but also to retain IP ownership, building company asset value.

The new appointees’ brief is broad. “We are happy to be able to announce the incorporation of María García and Camino de Valcárcel to the Studios team.

The BBC will look to further cost cuts, growth initiatives and transformation to help it fund its operations and public duties amid financial and sector challenges and return it to a financial surplus after a deficit that will balloon in the new fiscal year, the U.K. public broadcaster said in its annual plan and annual report Thursday.

Led by Director General Tim Davie, the broadcaster in its annual report outlined priorities for the new fiscal year 2024/2025 starting in April. “Our financial plan includes a transformative approach to savings to enable delivery of our strategic ambitions,” it said. “This will require a number of difficult decisions over the course of the year, including one-off transformational costs. Ultimately savings will help to deliver reinvestment in our audience offering and set the BBC up to succeed as audience consumption patterns change.”

Exclusive: With Mipcom on the horizon, Sweden’s Eccho Rights is building out its sales team by hiring well-respected exec Tess Charman.

The Stockholm-based distributor has named former Warner Bros International Television Production, eOne, MGM and Avalon exec Charman as its Director of Sales for Continental Europe.

Starting on September 1, Charman will take on European and pan-regional sales (excluding Iberia), focusing on Eccho’s slate of English- and Nordic-language titles. Eccho’s slate includes BBC drama Granite Harbour, Swedish series As Long As We Live and Viaplay show Honour. She’ll work out of Eccho’s London office.

Charman has worked in international distribution for several major UK and US entertainment businesses. She was most recently VP of Emea for Avalon Distribution, the sales arm of UK management and production biz Avalon, and held senior sales roles at eOne, MGM and Warner Bros.

The streamer has acquired North American rights to The Sixth Commandment and U.S. rights to This England. Both series, which are based on real events, have made significant noise in the UK and their acquisition follow on from BritBox’s July captures of cop series Granite Harbour and psychological drama The Ex-Wife.

The Sixth Commandment will play as a BritBox Original. The series, written by Sarah Phelps and directed by Saul Dibb (The Salisbury Poisonings), is inspired by the BAFTA-nominated documentary Catching A Killer: A Diary From the Grave.

‘Citadel’ VFX Outfit Signs Chief Business Officer

Good Omens 2 and Citadel VFX outfit Milk has snapped up a former Dneg exec as Chief Business Development Officer and Exec Producer. Marianne Speight will lead the outfit’s new business and bidding teams, supporting group studios in London, France, Spain and Ireland. Working closely with Milk’s production team, she will focus on securing new business and developing stronger strategic relationships with major content partners across the industry. Speight is a 20-year industry vet who has previously held roles including Global Head of Bidding and Development at Dneg and VFX Producer at Scanline. Exclusive: Best-of-British streamer BritBox International has added a pair of British dramas to its August slate in the U.S.

Detective drama Granite Harbour will launch on August 1 and psychological thriller The Ex-Wife will premiere on the streaming service in the U.S. on August 10.

Granite Harbour, which BBC One and BBC Scotland ordered out of the UK last year, is a licensing deal but is being badged as a BritBox Original.

The series stars Romario Simpson as Lance Corporal Davis Lindo, who envisions becoming a Scotland Yard detective after completing his tour with the Royal Military Police, only to find himself training in Aberdeen in northeast Scotland. He strikes up an unlikely friendships with his mentor, Dci Lara ‘Bart’ Bartlett, played by Hannah Donaldson (The Crown), and the duo find themselves in of a corporate power struggle when a wealthy and notable Aberdonian dies under suspicious circumstances.
