Neill Blomkamp is set to direct and write a new adaptation of ‘Starship Troopers’.The director, known for District 9 and Chappie, has been tapped by Sony’s Columbia Pictures for the project, according to Variety. It added the project will take its inspiration from the original 1959 sci-fi novel of the same title by Robert A. Heinlein, rather than Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 satirical adaptation of the book.It will mark a return to high-concept science fiction for Neill, 44, who has built his career on blending social commentary with action-heavy storytelling. The project also reunites him with producer and longtime collaborator Terri Tatchell, 46. Sony, which previously worked with Neill on ‘Gran Turismo’.It has not yet revealed casting or production timelines, Variety reported. While plot details remain under wraps, the film is expected to lean into writer Robert’s militaristic themes rather than Paul Verhoeven’s satirical approach. Big news for sci-fi lovers! Sony’s Columbia Pictures is bringing back ‘Starship Troopers,’ and they’ve tapped Neill Blomkamp to write and direct it. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the guy who gave us ‘District 9,’ a movie that mixed aliens and real-world grit in a way that stuck with people. Now he’s diving into Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 novel, and I’m already curious about what he’ll do with it.
This isn’t a redo of the 1997 ‘Starship Troopers’ film that Paul Verhoeven made. That one, with its over-the-top military vibes and bug battles, starred folks like Denise Richards, Casper Van Dien, and Neil Patrick Harris. It cost over $100 million to make but only pulled in $121 million at the box office. Still, it found a second life as a cult favorite. Blomkamp’s version, though, is skipping that satire and going...

Neill Blomkamp is doing his part. The “District 9” and “Chappie” filmmaker is attached to write and direct a new film adaptation of “Starship Troopers,” the 1959 sci-fi novel by Robert A. Heinlein that was last memorably brought to theaters in 1997 by director Paul Verhoeven. The new project comes from Sony’s Columbia Pictures.

While exact plot details remain closely guarded, the new “Starship Troopers” is said to draw inspiration from Heinlein’s original military story, rather than pulling from the fascist send-up that characterized Verhoeven’s satirical adaptation. Along with writing and directing, Blomkamp is producing with his longtime collaborator Terri Tatchell.
The project marks a reunion for the director and the studio. Sony last recruited Blomkamp for “Gran Turismo,” a film adaptation of the racing video game franchise that originated in the company’s PlayStation division. Released in August 2023, the film grossed $120 million...

Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 movie Starship Troopers pit a futuristic military unit up against insectoid creatures, with two live action sequels, two animated movies, and various video games following in its wake. We’ve been hearing rumblings about a new movie for several years now, and The Hollywood Reporter brings us an exciting update on that today.
According to the site, Columbia Pictures has hired Neill Blomkamp to write and direct the new Starship Troopers movie, which will re-adapt Robert A. Heinlein’s novel rather than outright remake Paul Verhoeven’s movie. Of course, Verhoeven’s movie was also an adaptation of Heinlein’s 1959 sci-fi novel.
THR details, “Starship Troopers ostensibly told of an interstellar war between Earth and a host of bug-like aliens, and focused on a rise of a military serviceman named Johnny Rico. But the story had other things on its minds, like exploring the strengths of life...

More than two decades after its 1997 release, Starship Troopers star Casper Van Dien says its time to reboot the franchise - but this time as a streaming television series. Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi action cult classic Starship Troopers is now streaming for free on Pluto TV. The iconic film, based on Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 novel of the same name, debuted exactly twenty-seven years ago.
Written by Edward Neumeier and set in the 23rd century, Starship Troopers follows teenager Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) and his comrades as they serve in the military of the United Citizen Federation, an Earth-based world government engaged in an interstellar war against an alien species known as the Arachnids. Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Muldoon, and Michael Ironside also star in the movie. Starship Troopers' development started in 1991 as Bug Hunt at Outpost 7, written by Neumeier. After noticing story similarities with Heinlein's novel, producer Jon Davison suggested converting the script into a version of Starship Troopers to garner greater interest from studio executives.
27 years ago today, Starship Troopers was released.

"Starship Troopers" was not a big hit when it arrived in 1997, and many audiences didn't know what to make of the darkly satirical tone created by "RoboCop" filmmaker Paul Verhoeven. In the years since its release, however, Verhoeven's violent, funny, action-packed sci-fi flick has been re-evaluated and become both a cult classic and a movie that some people still don't understand.
Adapted from Robert A. Heinlein's novel, "Starship Troopers" follows a group of youngsters who get swept up in being soldiers when alien bugs attack Earth. Of course, the war ends up being hell, and many of these fresh young faces are cut down in increasingly nasty ways. And then, just in case all of the satire went over your head, Verhoeven ends things by having Neil Patrick Harris show up dressed in a Nazi uniform.

Many popular American cartoons have clearly and proudly been influenced by anime. Beloved cartoons like Teen Titans and Avatar: The Last Airbender have drawn influences from the anime industry when capturing their art styles, character archetypes, and storytelling.
Thanks to the global reach of pop culture in the 21st century, the opposite is also true, with Japanese studios being influenced by American franchises and creating anime adaptations of well-known American works. Over the years comic books and video games alike have inspired noteworthy anime that's worth watching.
Star Wars: Visions
Classic Japanese samurai movies were one of the major influences on George Lucas in early drafts of the original Star Wars. With Visions, Japanese animators and filmmakers had the chance to celebrate the influence of Star Wars on their own works. A multi-studio anthology of standalone animated short films, Visions is stylish and slick.

Those who have read enough manga or watched vintage anime shows like Dororo and Astro Boy would be familiar with Osamu Tezuka, also known as "the father of manga" and "the godfather of manga." Furthermore, like Walt Disney, which dominates the animation industry in the West, Tezuka's works served as mainstream anime until the late 1980s, before he passed away in 1989.
Naoki Urasawa, the acclaimed author of the world-renowned anime Monster, created a manga spin-off of Astro Boy titled Pluto from 2003 to 2009. Taking his idol, Osamu Tezuka, as inspiration, he followed in his footsteps and produced something that would last long and serve as a reminder of how influential Tezuka-san was.
With Netflix adapting the award-winning manga Pluto, fans of both Tezuka and Urasawa are enthusiastic to see how it turns out. Given Netflix's history of successful manga adaptations such as Blood of Zeus, Castlevania, and Levius, there is no...

A majority of animated movies are geared directly towards children. Of course, there are adult television shows like Family and the Simpsons, but the movie realm is mostly for kids. There are exceptions though, and parents want to make sure none of these movies slip into their digital queue at home. If you are an adult who loves animation, then some of these movies might be right up your alley.
Fritz the Cat is unlike anything you’ve seen animated before. It’s crude, politically incorrect, and features racist undertones. Many families enjoyed watching Justice League together, but they probably shouldn’t gather around to watch the violence and scenes in Justice League Dark. Plague Dogs will haunt anyone who watches the incredibly sad film about animals getting experiments done on them and features a lot of intense violence. Aqua Teen Hunger Force pushed the limits as a television show...

Anime fan favourite Space Pirate Captain Harlock stars in a new movie... but is it worth the wait?
If you're a fan of manga, you probably already know Harlock, although his fan following is much larger in France, Quebec and Japan. Harlock is the brainchild of Leiji Matsumoto (creator of Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers). Harlock was created in the 50s, but his breakthrough came in 1978 with the release of the original television series, Space Pirate Captain Harlock. He has since then seen many incarnations, but he had been absent from our screens since 2002. Given the current trend of revisiting old franchise favourites, Harlock was bound to suffer the reboot treatment at one point. Harlock has already been rebooted several times over the years, long before the term "reboot" was actually coined, so it shouldn't have been a big deal, but some fans feared that Harlock's move to the big...

Executive producer Edward Neumeier takes us inside the world of Starship Troopers: Invasion, currently available on Blu-ray and DVD
There are few who know the Starship Troopers universe better than Edward Neumeier. He first adapted the classic Robert A. Heinlein sci-fi novel for 1997's Starship Troopers. He also wrote Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation and made his directorial debut with Starship Troopers 3: Marauder. The next installment in this sci-fi franchise is the animated Starship Troopers: Invasion, currently available on Blu-ray and DVD, which he executive produced. I recently had the chance to speak with Edward Neumeier about this new animated adventure. Would you like to know more? Then take a look what what he had to say.

Yesterday, I had the chance to speak with screenwriter/producer Edward Neumeier for the animated follow-up Starship Troopers: Invasion, currently available on Blu-ray and DVD. He wrote the original Starship Troopers back in 1997, and when I asked if he is involved in the Starship Troopers remake, he said he is on board as executive producer. But that certainly doesn't mean much.
"I am technically an executive producer, which means they never have to talk to me again. I've talked to them a couple of times. I would say that's a few years off, probably three. My only thing to them was, 'Hey, it's a great place to go play. My recommendation is to send your writers on a little field trip and let them experience actual military culture, so they are writing about one of the reasons why people like Starship Troopers.' I have no idea how studios choose their release dates, but this week is packed. It's not necessarily a week loaded with quality films, but considering the lackluster weeks recently I have no idea why they wouldn't have waited to unload some of these a couple weeks ago when they could have dominated a weaker marketplace. Some of the more intriguing titles are catalog selections in my "Even More" selection including individual releases of the Extended Editions of Lord of the Rings on Blu-ray and 100th Anniversary Blu-ray releases of Universal's Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, Airport and Harvey not to mention season releases of "The Walking Dead", "Homeland" and "Once Upon a Time". That said, there are a few solid titles among this week's releases and be sure and check out the new release dates as I now have confirmed dates for the DVD and Blu-ray releases of Prometheus, The Amazing Spider-Man and Brave.

This week: Will "Battleship" sink or swim on DVD and Blu-ray? The mega-budget summer flop about a naval fleet fighting off alien invaders had a reported budget of about $209 million but had to rely on the foreign box office to keep it afloat.
Also new this week is the romantic drama "The Lucky One" and the stop-motion animated adventure "The Pirates! Band of Misfits."

Box Office: $65 million
Rotten Tomatoes: 34% Rotten
Storyline: Peter Berg directs this epic blockbuster wannabe inspired by the Hasbro board game. Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson and many more take on a hostile extraterrestrial spacecraft armada over Hawaii and try to thwart the aliens' destructive plans before all hope is lost.

Last week saw the release of Kevin Macdonald’s acclaimed documentary, Marley, alongside Peter Berg’s mammoth blockbuster, Battleship, and this week brings with it a handful of new films and, most importantly in my books, the long-anticipated release of The Walking Dead Season 2. Today is a good day.
It’s a fairly light week with new releases, so without further ado,
My pick of the week:
The Walking Dead – Season 2.

It’s hard to be a Starship Troopers fan. After one cult favorite film established the celebrated Sci-Fi novels as a viable cinematic franchise, its two live-action sequels buried it under embarrassingly bad writing and acting that wasn’t much better. The sequels have always suffered from fan-fiction quality writing, and unfortunately Starship Troopers: Invasion, the latest entry in the struggle against the bugs, doesn’t have much else to offer besides some very pretty CGI, but even that isn’t without its flaws. A total lack of character depth and development and direction that favors visual style over narrative substance make it just another bad Sci-Fi movie that’s hard to care too much about—even with the entire Earth at risk.

The funny thing about Shinji Aramaki’s “Starship Troopers: Invasion” is that it looks a lot better when people are running around in their bulky space combat suits than when they’re out of them. When characters are just walking around in their undies, or in nothing at all (a common thing here), the CG animation leaves a lot to be desired. But that’s just one of the things about CG animation that I’ll never really be able to buy into. Fortunately there’s enough here in terms of wanton carnage, a totally fatalistic approach to warfare, and unrelenting bug action that helps me to overlook the film’s shortcomings. Directed by Aramaki, the man behind 2004′s “Appleseed” and “Appleseed Saga: Ex Machina” 3 years later, “Invasion” returns us to Robert A. Heinlein’s bug-infested universe, where the Federation continues its never ending battle against tough alien bug creatures...

Fans of science fiction, especially the kind that involves large space creatures tearing soldiers into bloody pieces, have often cited the 1959 Robert Heinlein novel Starship Troopers as one of the early precursors for that brand of the horror/sci-fi sub-genre.
It makes sense, since the original novel was hugely influential on James Cameron’s Aliens. And, in 1997, Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven took on Heinlein’s concepts with a big budget action movie that helped launch the careers of Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer and Denise Richards to a new level among genre fans.
In the 15 years since then, a number of people have managed to produce a couple straight-to-dvd sequels of varying qualities and a cartoon series which brings us to Starship Troopers: Invasion, a computer-animated action movie that continues the story using a style that’s somewhat inspired by Japanese anime. The Starship Troopers franchise is a bizarre animal. Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 original was overlooked by many as a bloody sci-fi blockbuster; little more than dull buggery. Point of fact, Starship Troopers is, true to Verhoeven form, a biting satire that takes skillful aim at the military industrial complex, fascism, and the price of patriotism. It is a film that is actually far smarter than a cursory glance would reveal. It is also far too good a film to suffer the indignities of two middling to poor direct-to-video sequels. However, the third film in the series did have the distinction of being directed by effects icon Phil Tippett, to date his only feature film. Starship Troopers 3: Marauder also brought back Johnny Rico himself, Casper Van Dien. For this fourth film, Van Dien is now a producer and the series has ventured into animated territory. Japanese director Shinji Aramaki brings us the story of a requisitioned spacecraft, a...

Citizens, prepare yourselves for an all new onset of bug attacks. This is not a drill. After three feature films, it turns out there is still more violent man-on-insect combat to explore within the Starship Troopers universe. An all new animated feature, Starship Troopers: Invasion, enjoyed its North American premiere at this year’s Fantasia Film Fest. A full review is brewing, but in the meantime, who better to introduce the movie and talk about the inner workings of this fourth installment of the franchise than Johnny Rico himself, Casper Van Dien. Though not lending his voice to the antecedent Rico in St:i, Van Dien did serve as a producer on the film. His intro was certainly lively and drew raucous reactions from Starship Trooper fans. Citizens! If you have ever wanted an opportunity to see Paul Verhoeven's pitch-perfect satire of fascism stripped of both its irony and wit, look no further than mecha-suit aficionado Shinji Aramaki's animated sequel Starship Troopers: Invasion and prepare yourself for a whole world of dumb, that's full of guns, but rarely fun. It is a shame because as an animated film Invasion is able to leap above the franchises' Dtv sequels in terms of scope and scale, as well as bringing back the franchise's original trio of protagonists. The film starts with a rescue team dropping in to evacuate a military facility run by a paler and creepier Carl Jenkins that has become overrun with bugs, and ends with a desperate attempt by ever stalwart (and...

Actor Casper Van Dien discusses his role in The Pact, arriving in theaters July 6
Casper Van Dien is best known for playing the brash Johnny Rico in Starship Troopers and the 2008 follow-up Starship Troopers 3: Marauder. When he's not busy killing bugs and saving the Federation, he's tackling many other roles in different genres, with his latest offering being The Pact, which is currently available on VOD and arrives in theaters July 6 from IFC Films. I recently had the chance to speak with the actor over the phone about playing Creek, a small-town sheriff who investigates the paranormal claims of a young woman (Caity Lotz) in this thriller. Take a look at what he had to say.
You've been starring in a number of different kinds of films throughout the years. Can you talk a bit about what you really look for in a project, and what really piqued your interest about The Pact?...

While we wait for that “Starship Troopers” reboot that may or may not be PG-13, Casper Van Dien (Johnny Rico himself) has been busy working with “Appleseed” director Shinji Aramaki to bring us the CG sequel “Starship Troopers: Invasion”. Check out a new trailer for the film below. Yes, that’s apparently a gratuitous shower scene and someone straddling someone in bed. The troopers of two starships have joined forces to terminate a massive bug attack at a federation outpost. Before the mission can be completed and the survivors evacuated, one ship abruptly departs and goes inexplicably dark. The remaining battle-hardened troopers race to the rescue, only to discover that the threat from the bugs is about to hit home. I’m still not a fan of the CG animation they have going on here. Looks a bit cheap to me. The female character designs in particular look a little wonky.

The first trailer for Starship Troopers: Invasion didn't do much but show off one of the various power suits used in the movie. This new teaser trailer, however, gives us a pretty decent idea of what director Shinji Aramaki is bringing to the world of space marines and arachnoids that Paul Verhoeven brought to life for the first time on the big screen 15 years ago. Unsurprisingly, Invasion doesn't look wildly different from Aramki's biggest film to date, the 2004 anime Appleseed, only a bit more industrial and a little less cartoony. Some fans may not like the aesthetic, but at least it's not quite as bubbly and stiff as Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles. Since the trailer doesn't give us a clear look at the story or the characters, we turn to the...
