Ralph Macchio is not done with Daniel Larusso yet as he returns in this year’s Karate Kid: Legends alongside Jackie Chan. The actor finally had his arc completed in Netflix’s Cobra Kai along with William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence. The show reunited many of the iconic characters from the ‘80s The Karate Kid franchise and gave them an arc.
While the reboot of The Karate Kid may have worked out, Macchio’s wishlist for another of his classic’s reboot may not be as easy as Cobra Kai. The actor mentioned that he was having conversations with writers for a reboot of My Cousin Vinny, which starred Joe Pesci and Marissa Tomei, who also won the Oscar for the role.

Whatever you think about Shia Labeouf, his intensity and commitment is unquestionable, and he's not afraid to be outspoken. Labeouf's interesting career path was diverted among a variety of scandals and allegations, and you could hardly call it a comeback when he returned in 2023 with the film Padre Pio. Which is a shame, because he gives a great performance, and Abel Ferrara always creates fascinating films. It was perhaps just too niche a movie to give the former Transformers star the spotlight again. That likely won't change with his next movie, Salvable, which recently released its first trailer. You can watch the trailer for the film, also starring Toby Kebbell, below:
The synopsis for Salvable reads as follows:
"Shia Labeouf and Toby Kebbell star in an emotional, action-packed film about a prize fighter’s battles both inside and outside the ring. When a battered boxer past his prime finds his...

Jack Huston, known for his acting work in Boardwalk Empire and American Hustle, has come aboard to direct a biopic centered on Joseph Merrick, the deformed Victorian Age artist known as The Elephant Man.
Phoenix Pictures is backing the feature, titled Joseph Merrick, which will be produced by Kate Cohen, Mike Medavoy and David Dobkin. Huston will also produce.
Production is looking to start later this year.
Merrick was an object of fascination during his life, and his story resonated beyond his lifetime. He was a man who was incredibly deformed and was used as a circus freak while a teenager and became an object of curiosity by London society as well as scientific circles, but he was also an artist whose work broke beyond the limits of his sometimes confined life. David Lynch directed an Oscar-nominated biopic that starred John Hurt in 1980, titled The Elephant Man, and the man has appeared in countless books,...

It takes some cojones for a first-time filmmaker to take on the spirit of Stanley Kubrick. But Jack Huston does just this for his directorial debut Day Of The Fight, not only invoking the title of the Kube’s 1951 documentary but also appropriating its premise, following a New York boxer in the run-up to a big middleweight battle. As well as squaring up with Kubrick, Huston is also sparring with Scorsese’s Raging Bull — Day Of The Fight is in black and white and features a rare modern appearance by Joe Pesci (also an executive producer) — and his own grandfather John Huston, who made his own terrific pugilist picture Fat City. If Huston Jr never scales the heights of this heavyweight trio, Day Of The Fight still shows signs of his promise as a director, if not a writer.

This week's Empire Podcast features two cracking interviews with two directors at two very different stages of their career. First, actor-turned-director Jack Huston sits down on Zoom and talks to our very own Chris Hewitt about how he managed to make his directorial debut, the black-and-white drama Day Of The Fight, about recruiting Joe Pesci for a supporting role, and about the influence of his famous grandfather, John Huston, on his craft and love of film. [26:52 — 47:11 approx.] Then, rounding out our one-two punch of filmmaker chats, Helen O'Hara sits down with the great Bong Joon Ho and his interpreter for a lovely chat about Director Bong's latest movie, sci-fi satire Mickey 17. [1:15:40 — 1:32:02 approx.]

If Ron Perlman knows anything, it's that sometimes the reluctant under-achievers have to step up and save the world. It's as true of his Hellboy character as it is his very public and long-time beef with Donald Trump. And in a new interview with The Guardian, the actor has revealed just how deep his dislike of the current American president is — and how he intends to fight back.
Perlman is currently starring in the Jack Huston-directed, black-and-white boxing drama, Day of the Fight, which is why he's out speaking so publicly after keeping a low profile the past couple of months. But the Brooklyn-born actor with the unforgettable face is not shying away from another fight with the Potus, he's just being way, way more strategic about it, complaining that he's working on "a counter-movement" to push back against Trump and Musk's current dismantling of the US government and American democracy.

Back with his new film Day of the Fight, the reluctant star recalls anxiety about his looks, a strange dinner with Guillermo del Toro, spats with Trump and Weinstein … and hints at his plan to save the world
Ron Perlman could be mistaken for Will Ferrell’s grumpy older brother. Today, however, he mostly looks trapped. That slab of a face, frosted with a white beard and moustache, seems too formidable to be contained by the narrow vertical frame of his iPad camera. Wearing a stonewashed grey denim jacket over a black shirt, he peers down at me, brow crinkled, as if from a great height. It’s like being on a Zoom call with Goliath.
Though he introduces himself as “Ron from Brooklyn”, the actor, who is a few weeks shy of 75, is sitting at home in Los Angeles. No, the fires didn’t touch him, but the nearest...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced on Monday the 207 feature films eligible for Best Picture consideration, two days before voting for the 2025 Oscar nominations begins.

There are 323 feature films eligible for the upcoming Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday, though a whopping 36% of those – 116 feature films – are not eligible for consideration in the Best Picture category.
The discrepancy between films that have qualified for the top category and films that are eligible in other categories comes either because the filmmakers did not attempt to qualify – likely the case for several documentary, animated or international films. Or because of new eligibility rules that require Best Picture candidates to meet additional benchmarks for diversity and inclusion. This is the second year that Representation and Inclusion Standards (Raise) have been enforced, though they did not appear to disqualify any serious contenders in the category.
Among titles excluded from Best Picture consideration are Andrea Arnold’s “Bird,” starring Barry Keoghan, Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut “Woman of the Year,” Michael Keaton’s directorial debut “Knox Goes Away,...

Boxing movies stand apart from other sports dramas for the sheer energy and underdog spirit they bring to the screen. From Rocky to Raging Bull, the legacy of movies about the sweet science has fascinated viewers for decades. In 1951, young director Stanley Kubrick directed a short documentary titled Day of the Fight, which followed middleweight boxer Walter Cartier as he prepared for a match-up at Madison Square Garden in New York. Actor Jack Huston was fascinated by that film and wrote a film using the same title but chronicling a much different lead-up to a prize fight.
Day of the Fight follows Mike Flannigan (Michael Pitt), a former champion boxer who spent years in prison after an accident claimed the life of a child. Given a chance to redeem himself in the ring, Irish Mike travels around New York City to make amends with people from his past while also...

“Irish” Mike Flannigan, a once-revered champion, awakens to the spectre of his past in the low light of a New York dawn. The day unfolds like a fragile tapestry, laced with hope and regret as he prepares for a return fight at Madison Square Garden.
This site looms large in his psyche, serving as a stage for redemption and a potential graveyard for aspirations. Each moment is imbued with existential weight as if the air he breathes is laden with the ghosts of his choices.
Mike takes poignant stops as he navigates the landscape of his day, recalling the echoes of his past splendour. At the gym, the rhythmic thud of fists against leather serves as a metronome for his troubled heart, while the shipyard reminds him of his hard life.

For his directorial debut, Jack Huston knew exactly how he wanted the movie to look.
“I wanted to make a film that was reminiscent of films that made me fall in love with cinema,” Huston told IndieWire. “The more gritty black-and-white dramas, human stories, adult stories, character studies, pieces.”
That meant that Huston imagined “Day of the Fight” in black and white from the start. The choice, as Huston pointed out, brought a sense of timelessness to the story of Mikey (Michael Pitt), a prizefighter freshly out of prison who spends the day before his last fight reconnecting with his past in 1989 New York City. “I think [black-and-white] gives it a sort of timeless aspect,” Huston said. “I wanted people to be able to access this film at any point. An ailing boxer's last chance at redemption gives familiar themes a deeply engaging personal perspective in Day of the Fight, a riveting black and white period drama. The film follows a fantastic Michael Pitt as he mends all fences before a title shot which will shape the destinies of everyone he holds dear. Writer/director Jack Huston stuns in a remarkable feature debut fueled by raw honesty, reconciliation, and unstoppable grit. Sometimes we don't get to pick up the pieces of our biggest mistakes, but can admit to past sins and do the right thing when a fleeting opportunity arrives.

Day of the Fight also co-stars Ron Perlman as Stevie, Mike's boxing trainer and de facto father figure. Perlman is best known for his transformational performance as the title character in Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy movies, as well as the tough-as-nails biker patriarch in FX's hit show, Sons of Anarchy. Plot: A washed-up boxer (Michael Pitt) prepares for the biggest match of his career – his first in ten years – while trying to patch up the various frayed relationships in his life.
Review: Day of the Fight marks actor Michael Pitt’s (billed here as Michael C. Pitt) first leading role in many years. A former heartthrob best known for The Dreamers, the American remake of Funny Games, and his role on Boardwalk Empire, he recently turned up in the underrated Benicio del Toro film Reptile but otherwise has been out of the spotlight for years. If you google his name, you can see that he had to deal with some personal issues we’re not going to dredge up here, but suffice it to say that Day of the Fight offers him a strong star vehicle that could help him make a comeback if the right people see it.

Erstwhile Boardwalk Empire star Jack Huston makes his debut as a feature film writer/director with Day of the Fight, a heartfelt indie drama that follows a disgraced boxer, Irish Mike (Michael C. Pitt), on the day of his big comeback bout at Madison Square Garden. Shot in New York City in glorious black and white, Day of the Fight succeeds thanks to its tight script, which slowly peels back the layers surrounding Irish Mike, his past, and his relationships with his friends and family, and an outstanding supporting cast, including Nicolette Robinson, Ron Perlman, Steve Buscemi, John Magaro, and Joe Pesci.
While Day of the Fight marks Jack Huston's debut as a feature film writer and director, he demonstrates an outstanding command of visual language, enhanced by his heart-wrenching script. Clearly, he was paying attention during his career as an actor.

Jack Huston and Nicolette Robinson sat down for a conversation with uInterview in which they shared the meaning behind their new movie Day of the Fight.
Day of the Fight follows the once-renowned champion boxer Mikey while he prepares for his first fight post-prison. As he prepares, He looks back to the past to reconnect with those he lost and grant himself redemption through amends.
The sports drama is Huston’s directorial debut, who until now has made his career as an actor. Asked what propelled him to approach the story from a different end of the camera, Huston told uInterview founder Erik Meers, “I was in no hurry to direct. I wanted to, but I was in no hurry…I think an early piece of advice was, ‘If you’re going to do something, you have to do it with all of your heart, and you have to love it,...

Thanksgiving has long been a deadline of sorts for studios campaigning for Oscar nominations, because it offers the tempting proposition of a holiday weekend in which voters might have free time to catch up on movies. In past years, that meant a steady stream of screener DVDs arriving in voters’ mailboxes in the days before Thanksgiving – but now, with the Academy focusing on its members-only screening platform and placing restrictions on physical screeners, the push is to get new films into the Academy Screening Room before the holiday.

“Raging Bull” vibes abound in actor-turned-writer/director Jack Huston’s first feature behind the camera. Huston reunites with his “Boardwalk Empire” co-star Michael C. Pitt for the 2023 out-of-competition Venice premiere “Day of the Fight.” The black-and-white drama follows a formerly renowned boxer Mike Flannigan (Pitt) now fresh out of prison and heading into his first fight since he was incarcerated.
Falling Forward Films — which this year released “Goodrich,” “Reagan,” and will soon debut “Los Frikis” — opens “Day of the Fight” in theaters on December 6. Below, IndieWire shares an exclusive clip from the film, which shows Mike asking his onetime best friend Patrick (John Magaro), now a Catholic priest, about the path toward redemption for his past. (The difference here from Martin Scorsese’s own black-and-white boxing classic being that of course Robert De Niro’s Jake Lamotta was seeking no redemption of any kind.)

Recently, I had the great pleasure of talking with the legendary Ron Perlman, who has two movies open at the moment – Absolution with Liam Neeson and Day of the Fight, co-starring Michael Pitt and Joe Pesci. While teasing his new films, Perlman, a great guy, was thrilled when I brought up the fact that, when I was in high school here in Montreal, our history teacher used to show us Quest for Fire to teach us about early man.
Made in 1981, this movie happened to be Perlman’s first, and in it he plays Amoukar, one of a tribe of cavemen sent to find fire, as they do not have the knowledge needed to create fire themselves. Shot entirely without conventional dialogue, Quest for Fire is an amazing movie that’s ripe for rediscovery, and Perlman was happy to give us a little insight in to the making of the film.

With every awards season comes something new: emerging talent, groundbreaking technology, fresh storylines. This season, at least six new directors hit the ground running. Actor Embeth Davidtz (Schindler’s List, Matilda and The Morning Show) wrote and made her feature directorial debut, Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, about a white Zimbabwean family following the Rhodesian Bush War; actor Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire, Fargo, American Hustle), a grandson of John Huston, wrote and helmed the boxing drama Day of the Fight; Malcolm Washington, son of Denzel Washington, co-wrote and directed The Piano Lesson, based on the August Wilson play; cinematographer Rachel Morrison (Black Panther, Mudbound) jumped behind the camera for The Fire Inside, another boxing movie; Josh Margolin wrote and directed Thelma, based on something that happened to his grandmother; and film editor William Goldenberg (Argo, Zero Dark Thirty) helmed Unstoppable, about a boxer born with one leg.

Like its title promises, Day of the Fight climaxes in a boxing match. Star Michael C. Pitt revealed that it was his idea to have a real fight during the production. Writer-director Jack Huston, making his directorial debut, heartily agreed.
“I had said to Jack, ‘Put the fight at the end of the movie. They won’t worry whether or not I get hurt then. We’ll make contact. We’ll fight. We might need to do that.’ ” Pitt said during a discussion of the movie at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles awards showcase. “On a bigger production, they have more time. They have stunts and all these things.”
Huston only had one and a half days to film the climax of the film, a fact that floored even Martin Scorsese when he introduced a screening in New York.
“You put him in the ring,” Huston said, appearing virtually on the panel.

Jack Huston is no stranger to the movie business. So when the longtime actor and grandson of filmmaker John Huston launched his directorial debut — the boxing drama “Day of the Fight” — to good reviews at last year’s Venice Film Festival, he knew it would still be tough to find distribution in today’s theatrical marketplace. But he had no idea how tough a fight it would be.
“We took on a sort of impossible feat by making a black-and-white period movie starring Michael Pitt,” Huston says of his film, which boasts supporting turns from Joe Pesci, Ron Perlman and Steve Buscemi. ”People walk out of this film so joyous, even [reps from] the biggest distributors. But some of these companies aren’t contractually allowed to take on black-and-white movies, which to me is the death of art. I put everything into this movie, so when it came to distribution, I said,...

Warrior Nun's return faces a potential setback after a financial probe of the production company working on the series' revival. Following the end of Warrior Nun season 2, the action fantasy series was cancelled by Netflix, leading to a global fan movement to revive the series. While a return was promised in 2023, it was revealed to be a revival movie trilogy produced by Dean English with the involvement of comic creator Ben Dunn. Since then, there has been very little news about its return, including formal, public information about whether the series will be a reboot or a sequel.

Film finance and production company Productivity Media Inc. has suspended its CEO amid a probe over allegations of financial mismanagement, the company tells The Hollywood Reporter. It recently informed investors that its executive team had brought in auditor PricewaterhouseCoopers to check its books and review loans.
“We can confirm that there is an ongoing confidential investigation and that William Santor is currently on a temporary leave of absence,” a representative said.
Multiple sources tell THR that at least some producers on Pmi productions — independent films with budgets typically under $10 million — have not been paid their full fees and believe distribution efforts may be imperiled by the issues now under review. “It is the company’s policy not to comment on these types of alleged contractual matters in a public forum,” the Pmi representative said.

Jack Huston has joined the cast of Spider-Noir. He will star as a series regular alongside Nicolas Cage, who plays an “aging and down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.” Cage first voiced the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Is Jack Huston about to give Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky a run for its money? What is this blasphemy upon which I speak? I’m talking about Jack Huston’s Day of the Fight, an upcoming underdog film packing a lot of heart that Falling Forward Films recently picked up for distribution. Today’s Day of the Fight trailer introduces Jack Huston’s directorial debut and what looks like a powerhouse performance from Michael Pitt.

In what is shaping up to be a rather thin awards season, could a small but formidable film, written and directed by a filmmaker with three Oscar winners in his family, find its way into contention?
That’s what Falling Forward Films is betting on in acquiring the U.S. distribution rights for Jack Huston’s impressive directorial debut Day of the Fight, a black-and-white indie about a once-renowned boxer — played by Huston’s former Boardwalk Empire costar Michael C. Pitt — as he takes a redemptive journey through his past and present on the day of his first fight since he was released from prison.
Indeed, the upstart distributor has already begun mounting an awards campaign for the film, which also stars Nicolette Robinson, Ron Perlman, John Magaro, Anatol Yusef, Steve Buscemi (another Boardwalk Empire alum) and — coming out of retirement to make a brief but shattering appearance — Oscar winner Joe Pesci.

The movie, inspired by true events, follows a young boy from Mexico who is trafficked across the border and sold to a sweatshop in downtown Los Angeles. The movie touches upon the current border crisis and the exploitation of migrant children in the supply chain of American corporations. Roadside Attractions, as previously announced, has set a Aug. 30 theatrical release.

It ought to make every American, and especially every parent, deeply uncomfortable – by exposing the underbelly of child trafficking in our own country. It’s an American nightmare. I don’t care if you...

"Raging Bull" knocked audiences flat on their backs when it premiered over four decades ago. The boxing biography, which is still considered among director Martin Scorsese's best films, unfolds as a rags-to-riches-to-rags story about a brutal middleweight fighter whose personal life never quite matches up to his success in the ring.
