Ridley Scott is a visionary director known for his striking and meticulously crafted films across numerous genres. While he’s widely recognized for sci-fi spectacles like Alien and Blade Runner, and historical epics like Gladiator, he's had a notable action-packed dip into cinematic crime. Scott's crime dramas often focus on tense power struggles, moral dilemmas, and the high-stakes world of illegal enterprises. His 2007 film American Gangster was nominated for two Oscars for its gripping biographical drama of Frank Lucas, starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe.
The award-winning director also helmed The Counselor, a neo-noir crime thriller written by Cormac McCarthy, which explored the consequences of greed in the Mexican drug trade. Black Rain brought Scott’s stylish visuals to a Yakuza crime story set in Japan, while Body of Lies followed high-octane espionage in the Middle East with a tense, politically charged thriller. Many directors' films end up with multiple versions as a result of studio intervention, international re-cuts, or re-released director's cuts. Ridley Scott is certainly one of those filmmakers, having created different director's cuts for 10 movies throughout his career — Robin Hood, Alien, Black Hawk Down, American Gangster, The Martian, Gladiator, The Counselor, Legend, Kingdom of Heaven, and, perhaps most controversially, his sci-fi masterpiece, 1982's Blade Runner. The 1992 re-edit of the film is, despite some controversy, widely considered to be one of the greatest director's cuts of all time, eliminating certain things and inserting others (the unicorn dream) in order to create more metaphysical mystery and ambiguity. But that wasn't the only director's cut of Blade Runner.
In 2007, for the 25th anniversary of Blade Runner, Ridley Scott released what is known as 'The Final Cut' of the film, which is now streaming on Netflix beginning today (you can watch it...

A lengthy runtime can be enough of a turn-off for people to straight-up skip a movie. Of course, they have no problem binge-watching a show for eight hours, but that’s another argument. But for some, the length itself might be the draw, a reason to shell out the money to go to the movie theater. Of course, that director better keep things interesting, lest they a “bum ache”, as Ridley Scott calls it. Scott took part in The Hollywood Reporter’s annual Director’s Roundtable session to discuss this topic, with most defending long movies.
Even though a study from last year found that a brisk 92 minutes is the ideal runtime for a movie, those participating in the roundtable – including Scott, Denis Villeneuve, Edward Berger, and Brady Corbet (the reigning king of epics this year) – agreed that the filmmaker is responsible for justifying any time that might be deemed excessive on the surface.

When David Fincher directed “Se7en” in 1995, his reputation was strangely bifurcated. On the one hand, he was a supremely successful commercial and music video director at the top of his field, having helmed innovative and influential shorts for icons including Madonna, Sting, and Rick Springfield. On the other, his one attempt at feature filmmaking, “Alien 3,” had been a bust — a critical disappointment liked by virtually no one, including Fincher himself. Although it has since developed a bit of a cult following, Fincher disowned “Alien 3” and famously said that he’d rather die of colon cancer than direct another movie.
Luckily for him, and for us, Fincher changed his mind when he came across Andrew Kevin Walker’s script for “Se7en,” a perfectly calibrated blend of intellectual philosophizing and pulpy exploitation that ended up beautifully served by Fincher’s unerring ability to push the psychic trauma the story inflicted...

This piece contains some spoilers for "Gladiator II."
In this month's "Gladiator II," Rome does not fall — but it comes damn close. It's also not for lack of trying, as both the manipulative ex-slave Macrinus (Denzel Washington) and our ostensible hero, Lucius (Paul Mescal), have no love for the Empire, with both men actively seeking to usurp, disrupt or combat its rule. Even though Lucius eventually changes his mind and finds himself believing in a "dream of Rome" begun by his grandfather Marcus Aurelius, and his father, Maximus (Russell Crowe in the first "Gladiator"), it may be too late, as the Empire has been nearly irrevocably tarnished by decades of decadence and misrule. The two men most responsible for this are the Emperors Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger), a couple of Enfant Terribles who director Ridley Scott told Vanity Fair he saw as "almost a replay of Romulus and Remus,...

“Gladiator II” (Paramount) is expected to gross over $60 million when it open this week in the U.S./Canada. If so, that will be a strong start for Ridley Scott’s 29th feature in his 45-year career.
With a budget reported to be somewhere around $250 million-$300 million, it will need all of that and more. While this may be his fourth film to cost over over $200 million (adjusting to current dollar value), “Gladiator II” appears to be the highest spend of Scott’s career.
It’s also the record expense for a director over 80. Paramount’s decision to entrust Scott clearly speaks to his past performances, particularly internationally.
We surveyed all 28 previous Scott features, calculating their grosses and budgets at 2024 values. And while a $60 million “Gladiator II” opening would be a record on paper, that only works if you don’t adjust his track record to current dollars and ticket prices.

Director Ridley Scott has opened up about why one of his next movies is in a genre he's never done before, explaining what influenced his decision to tackle something new. The longtime director's original claim to fame was his sci-fi movies, having created both the Alien and Blade Runner franchises. While he would continue to expand the Alien movie timeline with prequels like 2012's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, he never got the chance to do the same with the Harrison Ford-led film. Instead, he began branching out into different genres across his career.
Despite creating two classic sci-fi franchises, Scott's historical epics have become his claim to fame. These include Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and Napoleon, with the upcoming Gladiator II also falling into this category. Other realistic films he's done include Black Hawk Down, Body of Lies, and The Counselor, emphasizing just how much the director can embrace a multitude of film genres.

Zendaya and Tom Holland might have become Hollywood’s favorite duo both on and off-screen, with fans swooning over every movie they do together. And now, they’re apparently setting their sights on a five-film record, even making some waves with rumors about joining forces in a Christopher Nolan flick. Pretty impressive, right?

There’s a Hollywood pair who’s taken co-starring to a whole new level, already clocking in more than five films together. Sorry, Holland and Zendaya, but the reigning champs aren’t ready to pass the baton just yet!

When Cameron Diaz was still in high school, she signed her first modeling contract and appeared in ads for Levi's and Calvin Klein. She became recognizable nationwide when she appeared on the cover of Seventeen Magazine in 1990. Fittingly enough, she was actually 17. Diaz continued to model for a few years and even appeared in a Coca-Cola campaign before successfully auditioning for the role of Tina in Chuck Russell's comedic superhero noir "The Mask" in 1994. The star of "The Mask" was Jim Carrey, then experiencing a massive career upswing, and Diaz was swept up with him, becoming a household name almost immediately.
Diaz almost instantly became a media sensation, and her acting career took off. In the years after "The Mask," Diaz appeared in notable indie dramas like "She's the One," "The Last Supper," and "Feeling Minnesota," all of them with notable co-stars. By 1997, she moved into Hollywood's top tier,...

With Ridley Scott, you never know what you're going to get. The rare filmmaker of high taste with commercial sensibilities, Scott's filmography ranges from stone-cold masterpieces to forgettable programmers. Remarkably, the British director is still at the top of his game, as Gladiator II is set to be one of the most prominent releases on the 2024 calendar. Although his status in film culture is taken for granted due to his prolific nature, Scott should never be mistaken as a conventional studio filmmaker. Even in his most flawed but curiously fascinating movies, like 2013's The Counselor, Scott loves taking big swings. None, however, were quite as audacious as the Cameron Diaz car sex scene in the bleak Cormac McCarthy-scripted crime drama.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Ridley Scott's filmography isn't the sheer level of films he has directed but the vast array of genres in which he has worked. There aren't that many living directors who have made classics within the body horror (Alien), epic (Gladiator), neo-noir (Blade Runner), war (Black Hawk Down), and road trip (Thelma & Louise) genres, but Scott has managed to do all that and more. While it's impressive that Scott continues to try new things despite already being regarded as a living legend, he's also been given the freedom to take massive swings that didn't necessarily pan out. Scott wrangled together Brad Pitt and an all-star cast for the crime thriller The Counselor, which has become an object of cult fascination since it was released to almost uniformly negative reviews.

The longevity of a movie lives and dies by its public reception. Countless great movies have been buried by a critical or popular assumption of poor quality. But over time, as curious cinephiles engage with a movie on its own terms, the conversation can shift toward appreciation.
No filmmaker, however revered they may be, has been immune to the court of public opinion. From Jane Campion to Ridley Scott, even the creators behind some of the most beloved movies in history have come under fire for unexpected artistic choices, undercooking a premise, or just getting too weird. As the world of online film criticism becomes further democratized, audiences have been given more chances than ever to form their own opinions about the movies that just didn't connect in their day.

Isn’t it astonishing how an iconic role can catapult an actress into the limelight, only for her to seemingly vanish like a needle in a haystack afterward? Such is the case with Natalie Dormer, who rose to prominence playing Margaery Tyrell, a shrewd noblewoman on Game of Thrones.
However, in the explosive finale of Season 6—a highlight that left fans reeling—Dormer’s charismatic queen meets a fiery end, ejecting the actress from the Game of Thrones roster.

But Dormer did face her share of qualms, such as the particularly awkward sequence where she had to seduce the boy-king Tommen Baratheon. Isn’t it ironic that the actress had previously seduced Brad Pitt’s character in The Counselor without any regrets?

Reader, you have been lied to! Film history is littered with unfairly maligned classics, whether critics were too eager to review the making of rather than the finished product, or they suffered from underwhelming ad campaigns or general disinterest. Let’s revise our takes on some of these films from wrongheaded to the correct opinion.
When Ridley Scott‘s “Blade Runner” was released in the summer of 1982, it met with lukewarm responses from audiences and, though there were outliers, largely mixed reviews. (Pauline Kael’s snide dismissal stuck in Scott‘s craw to the point that he continued to quote it in interviews 40 years later.) Scott had the last laugh, as it only took around 10 years for everyone to come around and acknowledge “Blade Runner” as a classic, and given how wrong the critics were initially one might think they would be careful about underestimating Scott again. Yet when Scott...

Jeff Nichols is reportedly looking to adapt Cormac McCarthy’s final two novels for what may be his follow-up project to The Bikeriders.
Cormac McCarthy was a legendary American writer and his works have led to a number of films that have varied in quality. From out and out brilliance, such as The Road or No Country For Old Men to projects that deserve a second look such as Ridley Scott’s The Counselor (for which McCarthy penned the script), there’s always something to admire about the writer’s work.
One filmmaker who seems particularly engaged with McCarthy’s work is Jeff Nichols. Nichols has his first film in seven years due out soon, The Bikeriders. That film is a period drama which boasts an impressive ensemble cast that saw its release delayed due to last year’s strikes meaning that said cast couldn’t promote it.

When you think of the great directors in cinema history – Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, etc. – chances are the first films that come to mind are Goodfellas, Jaws and Vertigo. But every brilliant filmmaker has their duds. Now, Rolling Stone – you know, the publication that doesn’t think Roseanne and Bill Cosby had historic shows just because of their wrongdoings – has put out a list of the 50 worst movies by some of the most renowned directors…And yes, they have missed the mark considerably.
In the list, titled “50 Terrible Movies by Great Directors”, there are plenty of bottom-barrel films, those that are absolutely anomalies in otherwise remarkable careers. We wouldn’t argue that man-child family comedy Jack (#1) isn’t Francis Ford Coppola’s worst movie or that Rob Reiner’s North (#2) wasn’t worthy of Roger Ebert’s famed “hated, hated, hated, hated, hated” review. Gladiator 2's success is not guaranteed, but using minimal CGI is a promising sign for fans of practical effects in filmmaking. Practical effects were key to the original Gladiator's success, setting high expectations for the sequel's grand production. The enormous undertaking of Gladiator 2 increases pressure for success, as past box office disappointments require critical acclaim for survival.

Warning: Major spoilers for Amazon's Mr. & Mrs Smith episode 7 "Infidelity"
Amazon's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" pays homage to Brad Pitt's death in 2013's "The Counselor" with a gruesome bolito scene. Thankfully, the bolito wire device doesn't really exist and was the invention of screenwriter Cormac McCarthy. The show ends with a cliffhanger, setting up a potential second season.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith references one of Brad Pitt's most memorable onscreen moments. Amazon's action-comedy may have the same title as the 2005 Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie movie, but tonally, they're very different. Mr. and Mrs. Smith cast Maya Erskine and Donald Glover - who also co-created the show - as the titular characters, who are spies that pose as a married couple for missions. Amazon's adaptation drops the glossiness of the Doug Liman film, and while it has action sequences, it's more concerned with the complicated dynamics of "John" and "Jane's" arranged marriage.

Ridley Scott's The Counselor faced a lukewarm response upon release, but the director advocates for its reassessment, emphasizing its dark subtext and cynicism. The film's script, crafted by Pulitzer Prize winner Cormac McCarthy, was praised for its depth but criticized for being excessively verbose. The Counselor's journey reflects the unpredictable nature of film reception, with Scott's personal vision standing firm despite initial criticism, highlighting the balance between a filmmaker's vision and audience reception.
Ridley Scott's The Counselor emerges as a particularly fascinating example in the cinematic realm, where distinguishing a masterpiece from a misfire is often complicated by the intricate dynamics of directorial vision, script quality, and how audiences receive it. Released in 2013, this crime thriller, featuring a star-studded cast including Penélope Cruz, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, and Michael Fassbender, was met with a lukewarm response from critics and audiences alike. However, a decade later, Scott, an...

Ridley Scott's Napoleon is projected to open between $32 and $33 million at the domestic box office. The movie breaks a curse for the director, becoming his first adult-oriented or historical drama to open above $30 million in 13 years. The last Ridley Scott movie to do so was 2010's Robin Hood.
Napoleon has broken a box office curse for director Ridley Scott. The movie, which follows the rise and fall of the titular French leader, stars Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role. The story also focuses on Napoleon's relationship with his first wife, Empress Joséphine (Vanessa Kirby). After its Thanksgiving weekend premiere, it is set to stream on Apple TV+ at an as-yet undisclosed date.

"I Don't Know Who To Blame": Ridley Scott Defends His Most Critically Panned Thriller 10 Years Later
Ridley Scott defends The Counselor against negative reviews after a decade, calling it a "fun and cynical" movie. Scott believes that people are only starting to appreciate the film now, similar to his other movies that became classics over time. Despite its critical reception, The Counselor was a modest box office success.
A decade after its release, Ridley Scott is defending The Counselor against its negative reviews. Featuring an ensemble cast of Penélope Cruz, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, and Michael Fassbender, who played the titular protagonist, the crime thriller was written by Pulitzer Prize winner Cormac McCarthy and directed by Scott and followed a high-level lawyer who makes the drastic decision to enter the underworld of high-end drug trafficking. Historically, a lot of Scott’s work has been met with high praise and notable awards, however, The Counselor is arguably the award-winning filmmaker’s most divisive work to date for varying reasons.

Ridley Scott’s career is marked first and foremost by its sheer prolificness. There are very few directors of any age who work frequently enough to have two films coming out the same year. Scott’s done it three times in 2001, 2017, and 2021; and those later two times were when he was past the age of 80.
Since he made his debut with the swashbuckling period drama “The Duellists” in 1977, Scott has been a steady, constant presence at the cinema. His longest break has been two four-year gaps between releases — “1492: Conquest for Paradise” and “White Squall” from 1992 to 1996 and “The Martian” and “All the Money in the World” and “The Last Duel” from 2017 to 2021, the latter gap widened by the pandemic. More frequently, Scott only goes two or even just one year before dropping a new film, resulting in an impressively robust 28 filmography.

Ridley Scott‘s wildly ambitious “Napoleon” might be the director’s last word on its subject, but it’s not the first time he tackled both the glory and the absurdity of the Napoleonic era. One could say that “Napoleon” has been 46 years in the making, since Scott first began thinking about and researching the French emperor during the making of his debut feature, “The Duellists,” in 1977. That film tells the story of two officers (Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel) in Napoleon’s army who engage in an obsessive ritual of duels that goes on for so long that they ultimately forget what even started the grievance; in its setting, visual style, and themes, it’s an exceptionally well-realized template for most of the Ridley Scott epics that would follow — and he shot this historical extravaganza on a budget of around $800,000.

Charlie Chaplin once allegedly said, "Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot." That observation holds even more truth when "life" is swapped for "history"; after all, when looking back over humanity's seemingly never-ending tally of blunders, foolish short-sightedness, lazy handwaving, backpedaling, hatefulness, obfuscation, crimes of passion and other mean-spirited and/or boneheaded screw-ups that have resulted, snowball effect-like, in the messed up world we are all doomed to live in today ... well, you're either crying or laughing.
Judging by the films he's made over his stunningly prolific 46-year directing career, Ridley Scott appears to have chosen laughter. That's not to say he's a comedian, mind you; only real sickos would be likely to throw on "Blade Runner" or "The Counselor" in order to relax and have a chill time. Yet Scott's misanthropic humor is undeniably present in everything from the Lovecraftian coldness of "Alien...

Ridley Scott has never been one to take kindly to harsh criticism. Now, Ridley Scott is defending his latest film, Napoleon, from Bonaparte’s home country, France.
In response to the apparent wealth of French critics targeting Napoleon, Ridley Scott seemed to take a swipe at the country as a whole, saying, “The French don’t even like themselves…The audience that I showed it to in Paris, they loved it.” Regarding negativity, the BBC cited Le Figaro’s review that said “Barbie and Ken under the Empire”, while French GQ said the moment that featured French soldiers — with clearly Americanized accents — shouting “Vive La France” was “deeply clumsy, unnatural and unintentionally funny.”
When the BBC asked Ridley Scott if he had any words about those who are actively criticizing Napoleon’s historical accuracy, the director stated, “You really want me to answer that?… it will have a bleep in it.

He’s won prizes from the Golden Globes, Cannes, and the Directors Guild, but Ridley Scott has never won a little gold man.
The 85-year-old filmmaker, readying to unleash his Joaquin Phoenix-starring epic “Napoleon” on the world November 22, gave a characteristically gloves-off interview in The New Yorker this week. (One delightful quote? The director of the likes of “The Counselor” and “Thelma and Louise” and “Robin Hood” said “my choices tend to be random” in terms of what projects he likes to pursue.)
But the topic of how the four-time Academy Award-nominated English director feels about consistently being shunned by the Oscars came up with New Yorker writer Michael Schulman. Scott’s swords-and-sandals saga “Gladiator” won Best Picture in 2001 and revived his career, but as Scott wasn’t a credited producer on the now-classic, the win wasn’t his to take. He lost Best Director that year, as well...

You can always count on Ridley Scott to speak his mind, with results that vary from amusingly curmudgeonly to cringe-inducing. With his latest directorial effort, "Napoleon," arriving next month, that means the time has come for yet another round of Scott being completely out of f**ks to give while touring the press circuit. It's almost become an annual tradition thanks to his relentless work ethic, as the director has continued to release a new film every 12 to 18 months since turning 80 back in 2017. Yet, even after such a prolific career, there are few of his films that Scott maintains strong feelings about quite like the ones he has for "Blade Runner."
There's nary a film buff who doesn't know "Blade Runner" was a flop upon its release in 1982, only to evolve into one of the most influential sci-fi films ever made over the subsequent decades. The process of adapting Philip K. Dick...

One of the most eagerly awaited guests of Milan Fashion Week was Oscar winner Penélope Cruz, chosen by Italian shoe and clothing brand Geox as ambassador for its fall-winter 2023 campaign. During the press presentation, the Spanish actress also presented a special collection of garments and accessories ($190-$495), some 20 pieces including footwear and outerwear, designed by herself in collaboration with Mónica, her younger sister, a dancer and actress herself, also known to the general public for her role in the hit Spanish TV series Un Paso Adelante.

Michael Fassbender's racing experience and rapport with Brad Pitt make him a perfect fit for the latter's Formula 1 movie, saving time and money on training actors for stunts. Fassbender and Pitt have a successful history of working together, showcasing their commitment to their roles and bringing out the best in each other. The Brad Pitt Formula 1 movie could continue Fassbender's comeback in acting, which has already been building with his upcoming releases and is well-deserved after a string of box office disappointments.
Michael Fassbender is about to have a huge comeback with two tentpole movies, but there'd be no bigger or more fitting return for the actor than a starring role in Brad Pitt's Formula 1 racing movie. Close observers of Ridley Scott’s career know that his director’s cuts are often more notable than his theatrical releases. From initially misunderstood masterpieces including “Blade Runner” and “Kingdom of Heaven” to more offbeat fare like “The Counselor,” many of Scott’s films aren’t properly appreciated until he’s permitted to showcase his unfiltered vision without studio interference.
His latest work, “Napoleon,” is one of the British director’s most anticipated films in recent memory. Many fans and critics see the historical epic’s massive scale and casting of Joaquin Phoenix as natural parallels to “Gladiator,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2001. The film is expected to be a major player in this fall’s Oscar race — but in true Scott fashion, he is already thinking ahead to the director’s cut.

It has been two weeks since the passing of Cormac McCarthy, the taciturn Southern gentleman widely regarded as one of the great American novelists of the last hundred years, if not all of American history. His prose poetry, as deliberate and lacerating in its construction as the lethal instruments often featured therein, evokes the country as an earthy garden of sin where men gamble their fates and faith before a pitiless, Old Testament God.
Where many great writers of McCarthy’s generation carved ever-deeper niches into the peculiar artifices of language and the 20th century’s assault of information, his lucid, imagistic narratives and spectacles of violent incident have often suggested the cinematic. His engagement with genre––Western, horror, neo-noir––interrogated American myths, peeling back their skin and tissue to reveal the stark existential queries beneath. Fans of great literature and movies alike were mourning this past Tuesday with the passing of one of America’s great authors, Cormac McCarthy. McCarthy was perhaps most well known for his breakout novel All the Pretty Horses and the Coen Brothers' helmed movie adaptation of his neo Western No Country for Old Men (2007). McCarthy even wrote a screenplay for a feature himself in The Counselor to a mix of reviews. It’s easy to take the position that Anton Chigurh, played by Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men may be one of the greatest villains to grace the screen. Yet, there is a Cormac McCarthy villain audiences have yet to see brought to film that may just dethrone Chigurh from that title.

One of the giants of contemporary literature is no more. Deadline is reporting that Cormac McCarthy, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of No Country for Old Men and The Road, has died at 89. No specific cause of death other than natural causes has been revealed. McCarthy was one of a kind, being considered by many as one of the finest living Western authors. His books, which adopt a spare yet poetic prose, are all unified by the theme of a violent, sometimes contemporary (and sometimes not) West, as depicted perhaps most famously in No Country for Old Men. That was adapted into a stunning film by Joel and Ethan Coen. McCarthy’s apocalyptic novel, The Road, was turned into another great film by John Hillcoat (starring Viggo Mortensen). At the same time, he also wrote the screenplay for the divisive Ridley Scott film, The Counselor.

Cormac McCarthy, the literary giant whose violently nihilistic visions of America influenced a generation of writers and filmmakers, has died at the age of 89. His death was confirmed by publisher Knopf. McCarthy passed away at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The news was first reported by Publishers Weekly.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1933, McCarthy published his first novel, “The Orchard Keeper,” in 1965. He slowly rose to prominence in the literary world and eventually became known as one of the most important American authors of the 20th century for novels such as “Blood Meridian” and “The Road.”
In 2005 he published “No Country for Old Men,” which Joel and Ethan Coen adapted into a 2007 film that elevated their status as dramatic filmmakers and cemented McCarthy’s Hollywood legacy. Cinematographer Roger Deakins recently reflected on the making of the film, recalling that “Joel said we’re doing this script, ’No Country for Old Men.

Cormac McCarthy, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist who endured decades of obscurity and poverty before film versions of “All the Pretty Horses,” “No Country for Old Men” and “The Road” brought him a wide readership and financial security, died Tuesday in Santa Fe, N.M. His publisher, Penguin Random House, said his son John McCarthy announced his death from natural causes. He was 89.
Extremely reclusive, McCarthy shunned publicity so effectively that one critic observed, “He wasn’t even famous for it.” But Joel and Ethan Coen’s 2008 adaptation of 2005 novel “No Country for Old Men” put him momentarily in the limelight; the crime thriller, which starred Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin, won Oscars for best picture, director, adapted screenplay and supporting actor.
While McCarthy’s first novel, “The Orchard Keeper,” was published in 1965, commercial success eluded him until his 1992 National Book Award-winning “All the Pretty Horses” and the...

Cormac McCarthy, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author whose searing novel No Country for Old Men served as the foundation for the Coen brothers’ 2007 film that earned Oscars for best picture, supporting actor, directing and adapted screenplay, has died. He was 89.
McCarthy died Tuesday of natural causes at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, his publisher, Knopf, announced.
Known for his crisp prose, foreboding view of humanity, uncompromising approach to death and violence — and rebellion against quote marks and semicolons — McCarthy was celebrated as one of the leading American authors of his time.
“He is the great pessimist of American literature, using his dervish sentences to illuminate a world in which almost everything (including punctuation) has already come to dust,” Tim Adams wrote in a 2009 profile for The Guardian. “He once argued that he could see no point at all in literature that did not dwell on death. His touchstones are...

According to a recent report from the Playlist, author Cormac McCarthy is currently in the midst of adapting his acclaimed and notoriously bleak 1985 novel "Blood Meridian; or, the Evening Redness in the West" into a screenplay for director John Hillcoat. Hillcoat was announced as the director of a "Blood Meridian" feature film in late April. The filmmaker also directed the 2009 McCarthy film adaptation "The Road" as well as the nihilistic Western "The Proposition" and the 2016 heist movie "Triple 9." McCarthy will not only write "Blood Meridian," but will serve as executive producer alongside his son, John Francis McCarthy.
McCarthy himself, the author of the celebrated novels "Suttree," "All the Pretty Horses," and "No Country for Old Men," has written several screenplays in his career, although only one -- the script for Ridley Scott's "The Counselor" -- has been produced to date. McCarthy wrote several unpublished screenplays for movies called "Cities of the Plain,...
