After months of hype and some of the year’s best reviews, audiences can now watch The Studio. The 10-episode comedy series that lampoons Hollywood while embracing the people who try to make successful art amid the compromises of commerce debuted on Apple TV+ on Wednesday and should find itself among the year’s top Emmy contenders. Created by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, as well as Peter Huyck and Alex Gregory (Veep), and Frida Perez, and directed by Rogen and Goldberg, The Studio stars Rogen as the newly installed president at a struggling legacy studio. “I got into all this because I love movies. But now I have this fear that my job is to ruin them,” Rogen’s character, Matt Remick, says in the show’s sharp pilot episode (streaming now). Throughout the 10 episodes, Remick tries to balance his love for movies with the realities of his position,...

One of the most entertaining arcs of The Sopranos is definitely the sub-plot about New York's Lupertazzi Crime Family in season five. Many fans will often refer to the final season when discussing their favorite mafia-related conflict, in which New York and New Jersey went to war with each other. However, season five's inner conflict of the Lupertazzi Family is right up there with some of the best drama of the series. Tony and his family get caught in the middle of the only other true mob war that is depicted throughout the course of the series. During this season five arc, the sudden passing of Carmine Lupertazzi has sparked a power grab for control of the crime family. The two factions that go to war over who is going to be the next boss, break up the Lupertazzi family into supporters of either John Sacrimoni or Carmine Lupertazzi Jr.

There were two things that Tasha Huo (“The Witcher: Blood Origin”) wanted to accomplish as showrunner of the “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” 2D animated series (currently streaming on Netflix). She wanted to make the badass archaeologist/adventurer more vulnerable and explore Chinese mythology.
“She’s always been such a superhero in the video games,” Huo told IndieWire, “but in a TV show, we get to explore more about her emotional place where you want to see her grow out of something difficult. So that was always a starting place for me, finding a low point for her. And how does Lara Croft come out of a low point? It’s going to be more epic by the nature of who she is and the adventure we set her upon.”

20 years ago, Peyton Reed developed a 1960s-set Fantastic Four film at Fox that never quite came together, but now, with Reed’s third MCU movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, on the verge of release, he’s finally able to close the book on “The Four.” Reed is now tied with Jon Watts and James Gunn for directing the second-most number of MCU films behind the Russo Brothers’ four titles, and Quantumania really allowed the filmmaker to incorporate some of the elements he loved from his days of reading Fantastic Four comics as a kid.
“My first memory of reading about the Microverse in the comics, which became the Quantum Realm, was a Fantastic Four story where Dr. Doom shrunk the Four down into the Microverse,” Reed tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So I really took that passion and transferred it into this thing. And honestly, now that they’re actually making a Fantastic Four movie,...

YouTube has named Alex Piper, Head of Unscripted, North & South America. He replaces Ben Relles, who has transitioned into a new position leading interactive programming at YouTube.
Piper will lead all efforts working with top creators to develop and produce unscripted programming across genres including, talk, action, romance, horror, sci-fi and beyond, reporting to Susanne Daniels, Global Head of Content.
Piper also will oversee all live entertainment events as well as work on music and celebrity projects.
Piper’s appointment comes amid the platform’s recent shift in focus on unscripted series and specials. As Deadline reported last fall, YouTube was temporarily putting the brakes on new scripted development as part of its recent strategy recalibration to put stronger emphasis on unscripted fare. For the record, I gave The Masked Singer, Fox's new musical competition, a fair shot. I probably even went into it with more of an open mind than I did with The Four, Fox's other musical competition that doesn't seem to make much sense, because I'm easily wooed by shiny things, like The Masked

CBS won another Thursday primetime — thanks to “Big Brother” — on a summer night marked by chaotic Nielsen numbers — courtesy of the NFL.
Last night, every broadcast network had at least one pre-emption for NFL preseason games in multiple markets throughout the evening, inflating the early data across the board. Because the numbers were more subject to change than usual, TheWrap has updated the early data with the more accurate fast-national ratings from Nielsen below. And, yes, “Big Brother” still scored a touchdown — just not by as much.
CBS was first in ratings with a 0.9 rating/5 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 3.9 million, according to final numbers. In between repeats at 9 p.m., “Big Brother” scored a 1.4/6 and 5 million viewers.

There had been a lot of speculation since Disney’s acquisition of Fox assets was announced last December that the soon-to-be-independent Fox broadcast network, aka “New Fox”, will rely heavily on reality, along with live and sports programming.
While at TCA last week, Fox TV Group chairman Dana Walden stressed that while “we are definitely in the development business, and the mix of programming will remain as it was the past decade,” there has been a ramp-up in the network’s reality portfolio. At TCA, Walden announced three new series, all of them unscripted, The Masked Singer, a singing competition featuring celebrities in costumes and masks, Spin the Wheel and Mental Samurai.
In an interview with Deadline, the network’s President of Alternative Entertainment Rob Wade talks about the expansion, which started when he joined the network in early 2017. He addresses the fate of the network’s summer series The Four,...

The Cma Music Festival brought in plenty of primetime eyeballs for ABC Wednesday, but not enough to match the numbers the show put out last year.
While last night’s telecast scored 4.7 million total viewers and a 0.9 rating/4 share in the all-important adults 18-49 range, the 2017 fest landed 5.7 million viewers and a 1.2/5, slipping 17.5 percent and 25 percent, respectively.
However, the special still gave its home network a win in total viewers, though ABC settled for a second-place tie with NBC in the key demo. First prize in that category went to Fox.

ABC maintained its Sunday primetime winning streak last night with a lineup of game shows that brought the network to the top of the Nielsen ratings charts, in both the key adults 18-49 demographic and overall viewers.
Meanwhile, Fox tied for last place with the Spanish-language networks, broadcasting the iHeartRadio Country Festival.
ABC was first in ratings with a 0.8 rating/4 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 4.74 million, according to preliminary numbers. Lamar Jackson’s debut as a member of the Baltimore Ravens flew high and not so high last night for the quarterback in the NFL Hall of Fame game’s unofficial start to a new season of football but ratings for the NBC broadcast match-up with the Chicago Bears definitely went down.
With a 4.7/9 in metered market results and a 1.8/7 in fast affiliates, the Ravens 17-16 win over the Chicago Bears in Canton, Ohio took a two-time double digit hit last night from last year. That’s a 13% decline in the early metrics and a harder 18% fall in the first round of 18-49 results from the August 3, 2017 gridiron battle between the always well watched Dallas Cowboys’ 20-18 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
Which, even though the 6.50 million watched the Hall of Fame game and NBC won Thursday night, means the usually virtually meaningless first pre-season game now takes on hefty implications.

The first NFL preseason game of 2018 won in the Thursday overnight ratings but is currently down compared to the comparable game from last season.
This year’s game between the Chicago Bears and the Baltimore Ravens drew a 1.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.5 million viewers, though due to the nature of live sports those numbers could be subject to adjustment later today. That still is down from the 2.3 and 7.8 million last year’s game drew initially, though that game came in at a 2.2 and 7.7 million when the final numbers were tabulated.
Elsewhere on broadcast, Fox’s “The Four” hit season highs in both measures with its season finale.
On ABC, “The Gong Show” ticked up in total viewers, while “Take Two” was even.
A steady “Big Brother” was the only original to air on CBS.
The CW aired only repeats.

Fox, the new home of “Thursday Night Football,” ironically just lost to a Thursday night football game. NBC’s Hall of Fame Game 2018 topped last night’s primetime ratings, taking down both “Big Brother” and Fox’s “The Four” season finale.
NBC was first in ratings with a 1.8 rating/9 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 6.5 million, according to preliminary numbers. Meghan Trainor and “Pose” star Mj Rodriguez were chatting against a wall during Fox’s TCA party Thursday night at Soho House in West Hollywood for a few minutes before the two exchanged phone numbers.
“I just found out that we went to Berklee College of Music at the same time,” Rodriguez told Variety. “We know a lot of the same people. She said she’s going to message me.”
While Trainor is a certified pop star, Rodriguez’s powerful singing voice first grabbed attention and become the chatter of Twitter after she was featured on an episode of “Pose” last month singing “Home” from “The Wiz” with her Tony winning co-star Billy Porter.
“I never got the chance to showcase my voice like that before,” Rodriguez said.
Perhaps “Pose” could be headed for a musical episode when it returns for Season 2? “Hopefully that might be in the works,” Rodriguez said.

The season finale of The Four hit a high note Thursday, turning in its best performance of the season despite greater competition than usual.
The Fox singing competition averaged a 1.0 rating for adults 18-49, up a tenth of a point from its previous season best. The finale helped the network tie for second place in the demo in primetime. The show's 0.8 average for its summer run is off by a third from its inaugural cycle in January and February — which is to be expected given the lower overall TV viewership levels in summer.

Fox has given a series order to the competition series “Mental Samurai” with Rob Lowe set as the show’s host.
The announcement was made as part of Fox’s presentation at the TCA summer press tour on Thursday. The show will premiere during the 2018-2019 season.
Each episode will see contestants battle to answer questions accurately with speed and precision on a specially designed course. Not only does the course test their acumen in categories of knowledge, memory, numbers and sequencing, but players will also have to contend with being transported around the set at high speeds in a specially designed capsule that is capable of rotating 360 degrees.

CBS’ Big Brother continued its dominance in Thursday’s primetime, topping all others broadcast programming in Nielsen’s Live+Same Day ratings.
The reality staple, off a tenth from last week’s season-high Thursday number but even with Wednesday’s edition, helped give CBS an easy victory overall in total viewers, teaming with reruns of The Big Bang Theory (0.8, 5.75M) and Young Sheldon its lead-ins; those repeats were the two most-watched shows of the night.
Fox tied CBS for the top spot overall in 18-49s with the 8-10 Pm The Four: Battle for Stardom, which hit a season high in viewers and tied its high in the demo ahead of next week’s finale.
ABC had a full night of originals with The Gong Show, Match Game and Take Two all even with last week. Take Two was the only original at 10 Pm.
