Tyler Perry is getting real. The entertainment mogul’s Tyler Perry Studios has partnered with Asylum Entertainment Group in a joint venture to create and produce unscripted content. As part of the news, Antoinetta Stallings has been named vice president of unscripted programming for Tyler Perry Studios.

Under the new deal, Tyler Perry Studios and Asylum will co-develop, co-produce and distribute unscripted programming.

“I’m excited to bring the world of unscripted content to Tyler Perry Studios,” Perry said in a statement. “We’ve never tapped into this area of entertainment before and we’re looking forward to working closely with Asylum to bring unique real world stories to life. I’m also proud to recognize the work that Antoinetta has been doing at the studio and promote her to this position of overseeing this new creative arm at the studio.”

As part of their creative partnership, Antoinetta Stallings has been named vp of unscripted programming for the Madea filmmaker’s Atlanta-based studio, and will work alongside Asylum to produce unscripted formats. Stallings’s credits include 106 & Park, Rising Icons, Black Girls Rock, Grand Designs, Down South Dance and Fox’s dating game show Take Me Out.

In 2023, Stallings earned an Emmy nomination for her work on the PBS documentary The Price of Silence. The joint venture with Asylum marks the first foray by a prolific Perry — who has separate creative deals with Netflix and Amazon MGM Studios — into unscripted programming.

Each year, the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre (aka the Tonys), celebrates the best on Broadway. The nominations were announced by two past Tony winners: Take Me Out‘s Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Hamilton‘s Renée Elise Goldsberry.

The 2024 Tony Awards nominations are slated to be revealed on Tuesday morning.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry will reveal this year’s nominees live at 9 a.m. Et/6 a.m. Pt in an announcement that will be streamed on the Tony Awards’ official YouTube page. A selection of categories will be shared earlier on CBS Mornings at 8:30 a.m. Et/5:30 a.m. Pt. Following the live announcement, the full list of nominees will be shared on the official site for the Tony Awards.

Ferguson won a Tony award for his starring role in the revival of Richard Greenberg’s Take Me Out, winning in the best performance by an actor in a featured role in a play category. Meanwhile, Goldsberry, who can currently be seen in the Netflix comedy Girls5Eva, won a Tony and a Grammy for originating the role of Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton.

Grey’s Anatomy is closing out its 18th season with a bang that is bigger than usual as the season finale of the hit medical drama also marks its 400th episode, a milestone just a handful of TV series have reached.

Broadway’s 2021-22 season – 10 weeks shorter than usual, plagued by Covid and the cancelations it caused, not to mention the tourists who didn’t show up – took a beating at the box office, with season-end numbers no less stark for being expected: The industry took in a total of 845,354,915 at the box office, down about 54 from the the historic high of 1.829 billion set by the 2018-19 Broadway season (the last full season prior to the 2020 pandemic shutdown).

Figures compiled by the Broadway League released today indicate that total attendance for the season was 6,729,143, also down 54 from the 2019 record high of 14,768,254. Despite the year-to-year downturn, the percentage of available seats that were filled during the 2021-22 season was a solid 82.

The Music Man‘s Sutton Foster was presented with the Distinguished Performance Award for career-achievement by Patti LuPone. In inaugural prizes for outstanding director, Company‘s Marianne Elliott was named in the musical category, and Kate Whoriskey, director of Clyde’s, in the play category.

Last week’s Tony Award nominations translated into box office sales for at least some of the contenders, with A Strange Loop seeing the biggest boost. The musical, which topped the Tony list with 11 nominations, saw a 213,871 increase in its weekly grosses, taking in 690,668 for the week ending May 15.

Overall, the 35 Broadway productions grossed 30,349,653, a slight 3 dip from the previous week’s 31,199,660, a decline largely attributable to the 1,054,792 drop in box office at Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which canceled four of its usual eight performances due to Covid cases among the cast. Moulin, with Broadway favorite Derek Klena now leading the cast, took in 537,705 for four performances, filling 91 of available seats.

Also losing ground was Lincoln Center Theater’s The Skin of Our Teeth, which canceled three performances due to Covid, dropping 58,736 from the previous week to 115,745 for its five performances.

Audra McDonald is the most lauded Broadway performer winning a whopping six Tony Awards in both musical and dramatic categories. And she may be receiving her seventh for the revival of “Frankie and Johnny in the Clair du Lune” when the 74th annual Tonys take place Sept. 26th at the venerable Winter Garden Theatre.

Despite that record, it took a long time for Black artists to be acknowledged by the Tonys, which were first handed out in 1947. It wasn’t until 2004 that a Black actress won for a lead performance in a play: Phylicia Rashad broke this barrier with her win for a revival of Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun.” Hansberry was the first Black artist to be nominated for Best Play in 1960 for the original production of “A Raisin in the Sun” as were its director Lloyd Richards and stars, Sidney Poitier and Claudia McNeil.

Alexandra Billings, a trans actor who made Broadway history when cast as Wicked‘s Madam Morrible in 2020, has issued a strong rebuke to Cameron Mackintosh over comments the British theater producer made opposing the casting of trans performers in classic roles.

In the post addressed to “Sir Cameron,” Billings writes, in part, “I am an actor. I am Mame and I am Madame Rose. I am Miss Hannigan and I am Annie Oakley and I am Fantine…I am an actor, Mr Mackintosh, not a gimmick.” (Read the full post below.)

Created and written by Vanessa Gazy, Echoes is a mystery thriller about identical twins Leni and Gina, both portrayed by Monaghan, who share a dangerous secret. The newlywed former Towie cast member will be taking to the decks as the resident DJ at islander Lauren Richardson's birthday party on Sunday night (July 12).

FremantleMedia will develop and create entertainment formats for the Chinese market in a newly-minted joint venture with Shanghai Media Group's BesTV and China Media Capital (Cmc).

The deal to produce shows for broadcaster Dragon TV and Iptv operator BesTV was sealed by Ian Hogg, CEO of FremantleMedia Asia Pacific.

Based in Shanghai, the Jv.s development team will consist of local producers and format experts who will work with Fremantle executives to develop original entertainment.

The Voice UK continued its reign over Saturday evenings with almost 7million viewers last night (March 7), according to overnight figures.

An average of 6.99m tuned in for the latest Battle Rounds, which is slightly down on last week's 7.23m. The average share also dropped from 33.1% to 23.5% this week.

The singing competition was preceded by Match of the Day Live on BBC One, attracting 3.98m (23.5%) from 5.15pm to 7.30pm as Aston Villa played West Bromwich Albion.

Casualty played out to 4.89m at 9.30pm, giving the channel a 24.8% share of the audience.

ITV's schedule led with Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway from 7pm, entertaining 5.94m / 27.8% until 8.30pm (+1: 277.6k / 1.3%).

Take Me Out followed with 3.20m / 14.9% (276.8k / 1.5%), while The Jonathan Ross Show took 2.09m / 12.4% (192.2k, 1.9%) from 10pm to 11pm.

Reginald D Hunter's Songs of the South was the most watched programme on BBC Two last night, with an average of 1.38m / 7.2% viewers between 9.30pm and 10.30pm.

BBC One's singing contest averaged 7.23m (33.1%) from 7.15pm, according to overnight figures. Casualty then appealed to 4.8m (23.9%).

BBC Two's How We Got to Now with Steven Johnson was watched by 816k (3.7%) from 7.45pm. A Dad's Army repeat entertained 1.51m (6.8%), before Reginald D Hunter's Songs of the South continued with 1.16m (5.9%).

On ITV, Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway managed 6.03m (28.5%) from 7pm.
