Following a movie about a rampaging, coke-fueled bear was never going to be easy, but Cocaine Bear writer Jimmy Warden is giving it his best shot with the comic thriller Borderline (out now), which he also directed. A twisted look at the dark side of fame, it stars Samara Weaving, Warden’s wife, as a Nineties pop star who has to fend off a sociopathic stalker who’s convinced he and the object of his obsession are meant to be married.
“Jimmy’s brain is my favorite thing,” Weaving says.

Samara Weaving is a certified Scream Queen. Although she’s had impactful roles in dramas, comedies (“Bill & Ted Face the Music”), period pieces (“Chevalier”) and even starred in the Aussie soap opera “Home and Away,” she always returns to genre films. From early roles in “Mayhem” and “The Babysitter” to memorable recent turns in “Scream VI” and “Azrael,” Weaving is a frequent highlight of dark projects, able to match both comedic tones and deadly serious narratives.
“Borderline,” in theaters Friday via Magnolia Pictures & Magnet Releasing, finds Weaving in an irreverent mode. The film, written and directed by her husband Jimmy Warden, stars Ray Nicholson as Duerson, an obsessive fan of ’90s pop star Sofia, played by Weaving. Convinced the pair are destined to get married, the deluded Duerson breaks into Sofia’s house with hopes of sweeping her off her feet. As Sofia tries to escape, the cat-and-mouse game between...

Before Adam Wingard joined Legendary's Monsterverse to helm Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, he directed what is arguably one of the greatest slasher films of the 2010s: You're Next. Written by Simon Barrett, the film focuses on an estranged family who find themselves under attack by a group of masked assailants during a family reunion. It's a familiar premise, but one Wingard and Barrett handled with a deft hand that's filled with black humor and gory kills. Now, the pair are discussing the sequel they had planned, which they're glad they never made.
The chat between the two comes during a new commentary track on You're Next, which was released yesterday on SteelBook 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray exclusively from Lionsgate Limited (via Bloody Disgusting). The film saw its killers decked out in a lamb, a fox, and a tiger mask, and while Lamb Mask (L.

Samara Weaving plays a pop star whose home is invaded by an obsessed fan in Borderline, an upcoming action-comedy thriller being described as a "violently romantic comedy." Judging from the film's first trailer, this is certainly a spin on the traditional rom-com for fans looking for something a bit more offbeat. Check out the trailer below.
Written and directed by Jimmy Warden, who scripted 2023's comedy horror film Cocaine Bear, Borderline stars Weaving as Sofia, a pop star who sees her home invaded by an obsessed fan named Paul (Ray Nicholson). The fan is convinced that the pair are meant to not only be together but also be married, and he plans to manipulate Sofia into succumbing to his delusions. The film also stars Eric Dane, Alba Baptista and Jimmie Fails.
Warden marks his directorial debut with Borderline, and it does look like a fun, albeit demented, piece of work.

Through her roles in titles like The Babysitter, Ready or Not and Azrael, Samara Weaving has defined herself as one of the best modern horror actresses. Soon, she’ll be doing it all over again in Jimmy Warden’s directorial debut, Borderline. Today, the debut trailer for the film has been released, teasing the Scream VI’s actress’ latest dip into the pulse-pounding world of horror, this time angled with a thriller and comedy twist that will drum up memories of Rob Reiner’s 1990 adaptation of the Stephen King classic, Misery. Featuring supporting performances by an absolutely unhinged and out of his mind Ray Nicholson (Smile 2), the film promises to satiate Weaving fans as they wait for further updates about Ready or Not 2.

A hit 2019 horror movie that grossed more than $57 million has enjoyed a new lease of life on streaming platform Netflix. Horror has always been a popular and important genre and has allowed actors and directors alike to experiment and try new things. The recent rise of so-called "elevated horror," which has followed the found-footage craze of the early 2000s, has brought fresh and interesting horror movies to a more mainstream audience in recent times. Movies like Abigail, Hereditary, Terrifier, Speak No Evil, and Get Out have shown a range of modern horror over the past decade.
Horror movies have performed very well on streaming platforms over the past few years, and are frequently among the most watched categories, which could have a lot to do with people's innate desire to be scared, and the thrill this can bring. As her new movie Azrael, hits Shudder along with the announcement of Ready or Not 2, Samara Weaving is one of today's most prominent scream queens. First becoming an Australian household name in the long-running soap opera Home and Away, Weaving has gone on to forge a prosperous career in Hollywood, especially in the horror genre. She has starred in Netflix's The Babysitter and as a Final Bride in Radio Silence's Ready or Not. She was also given the honor of being the opening victim in Scream 6. But what was it that first dragged Weaving to the dark side? In 2015, Weaving landed a recurring role in a TV show that would see her collaborate with some of horror's biggest names.

After bowing theatrically in September, E.L. Katz's religious horror movie Azrael is poised to join Shudder on October 25, 2024. A perfect Halloween watch, the film stars Samara Weaving as Azrael, a woman who escapes captivity from a pious cult of wicked worshipers and is systematically stalked by the members for a ritual sacrifice. Of course, beyond the protagonist's namesake, the movie title has an angelic/demonic connotation that bears further scrutiny.
In addition to parsing the mythological meaning of the movie's title, it's worth explaining how the twisted plot plays into biblical lore and reinforces the eternal struggle between good and evil. Far from only the protagonist's moniker, Azrael has a religious historical subtext that dovetails into the devious horror story.

Warning: Major spoilers for Teacup episode 1 and episode 2 aheadPeacock's new horror show Teacup kicked off with its first two half-hour episodes, and in doing so, began to weave a web of mystery and terror while answering very few questions. Inspired by, although not based on, Robert R. McCammon's 2015 sci-fi horror novel Stinger, Teacup follows a group of neighbors and acquaintances as they attempt to survive a mysterious and deadly entity that has trapped them on a rural farm in Georgia. In the Peacock original horror series Teacup, the Chenoweth family is trapped at their rural farm due to supernatural circumstances, joined by family friend Ruben Shanley (Chaske Spencer) while the mysterious McNab (Rob Morgan) investigates whats going on. Created by Ian McCulloch, the series is a tense thrill ride unfolding over 48 hours as those affected by the strange incident gradually discover something far more sinister keeping them on the farm. With things already tense between the occupants of the farm, this only escalates the propensity for violence and personal stakes involved.
In an exclusive interview with Cbr, Teacup actors Chaske Spencer and Rob Morgan share how they developed each of their respective characters, praise the cast and crew for working with them to build the gripping television series and tease what audiences can expect when Teacup premieres on Peacock this October.

Years after the Rapture, some of the survivors are so shaken up that they vow to give up even the simple act of speaking – that’s how much things have changed. This statement pretty much sums up E.L. Katz’s, “Azrael” (2024). The film takes place post-rapture, which, in Christian belief, is when, at the end of time, all the good-hearted people (both the living and the dead) are plucked up to the heavens, leaving behind the so-called sinners. Those left behind are stuck in a world where chaos, crime, and sin run wild. The film really drills into that idea of the breakdown of society, faith, and morality in a world abandoned by the righteous.
Azrael (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis: Who is Azrael?
“Azrael” is about a fierce woman of the same name trying to survive in a post-rapture world gone completely mute. Yes, people have given up talking, believing speech itself is sinful now.

One of the most notorious aspects of Tobe Hooper's 1974 horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is that, despite its lurid title, premise, and tagline ("Who will survive and what will be left of them?"), the kills in the iconic proto-slasher are delivered with little to no special effects, blood, or gore. However, in spite of, or in fact because of this, the movie has not lost one ounce of its brutality and power in the 50 years since its original release.

Samara Weaving is a talented yet somewhat underrated actor whose career began in Australian soap operas before moving to Hollywood productions. Weaving's first starring role outside of television was in the Australian thriller film Bad Girl, released in 2016. Weaving later had roles in popular and critically acclaimed films like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Chevalier.
On television, Samara Weaving had starring roles in Australian dramas like Out of the Blue and in the second longest-running drama series on Australian television, Home and Away. She also appeared in TV series like Ash vs Evil Dead, Hollywood, and Nine Perfect Strangers. Most recently, Samara Weaving had a small role in Scream VI and now stars in the action horror film Azrael, which was released on September 27, 2024. Yet while Weaving has already had a prolific career, for those still unfamiliar with her work, some must-watch television series and movies perfectly showcase Samara Weaving's talent.

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Never Let Go (2024)
While Never Let Go relies heavily on its big twist, I guessed where the horror movies story was heading a month before I even saw it. Horror movie trailers are a mixed blessing. Some, like NEONs viral marketing campaign for Longlegs, can be as unsettling and thrilling as a great horror movie. Others, like the trailers for Alien: Romulus, Speak No Evil, and many more of 2024s biggest genre movies, give away too much plot and leave viewers with no reason to seek out the movie itself. Then there are movies like director Alexandre Ajas Never Let Go.
Related Does Never Let Go Have A Post-Credits Scene?
Alexandre Aja's recently-released supernatural thriller features anxiety-inducing questions throughout, but does anything happen after the credits?

Columbia Pictures’ Saturday Night from Jason Reitman debuted at $265k, a great $53k per theater that’s the second-best limited opening of the year, and the best since June when Kinds Of Kindness also opened in 5 theaters (to a $75k PTA). It’s been a long a slightly dower wait for something to pop.
Saturday Night made $108K on Friday, $88K on Saturday and a projected $69K on Sunday in LA and New York. Expands Oct. 4 before opening wide on Oct 11 and looks well set up for a nice theatrical run with strong reviews and word of mouth since premiering at Telluride and Toronto.

Although A Quiet Place popularized the concept of a silent horror movie, it never actually stayed completely quiet, which made it much easier for Samara Weaving's newest film to completely outdo the John Krasinski franchise. Today, A Quiet Place is a notable horror film franchise, with three A Quiet Place movies currently released and a highly anticipated sequel on the way. When the series first premiered in 2018, its central storytelling device felt genuinely groundbreaking. It was hard to fathom a horror movie where the characters had to stay quiet to survive. Now, however, another apocalyptic horror movie has surpassed the franchise.
Released in March 2024, Azrael is a horror action movie starring Samara Weaving. The movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a cult of mute fanatics are in power. When a woman named Azrael escapes from their clutches, she must ensure that she stays as silent as her captors to stay alive.

E.L. Katz's new action horror movie Azrael stars horror icon Samara Weaving in one of her most challenging roles yet, as she plays a young woman trying to survive in a world where nobody can talk. The post-apocalyptic film is set in an unnamed forest many years after the biblical Rapture, and features monsters both in human form and something far more sinister. Azrael is now showing in select theaters, and relies heavily on the score and the talents of its cast, specifically Weaving, to tell the story, as almost none of the characters utter a single word in the entire runtime.
Azrael's ending does very little to clarify any of the major story beats, although there are subtle clues throughout that allow for some assumption and interpretation. One of the primary mysteries surrounds the vicious cult that hunts Weaving's Azrael for the entire movie, and how they came...

Samara Weaving has carved out a niche for herself in Hollywood as an A-list scream queen by appearing in several recent acclaimed horror movies, including 2024's Azrael. After eight years as an actor, Weaving entered the horror genre with 2017's The Babysitter. Although she has landed dramatic roles in award-winning movies like 2017's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and 2022's Babylon, much of Weaving's filmography involves the horror and thriller genre. Many of her horror movie roles have been well-received by critics and audiences alike, giving her one of the most impressive resumes of any modern scream queen.

Indie distributors are fretting about the current marketplace, specifically a glut of films vying for precious theater space and hard-to-snare audiences who, with exceptions of course, still seems mostly willing to come out for big ticket films.
While there are fewer wide studio releases than pre-Covid, theaters are giving them more space, up to 60%-70% of their real estate, a few indies execs said.
Meanwhile, it’s become cheaper to distribute films, which may be why new firms keep popping up to test the waters and in some cases open their movies on hundreds of screens, perhaps without a commensurate marketing effort.
“There is a lot of stuff being released, but nothing is performing,” says one indie distribution executive. Films like Deadpool or Beetlejuice Beetlejuice work, “but everything else is a crapshoot.
“Whether consumers are going to movies other than the big ones has been the question, and still is.

Directed by E.L. Katz, Azrael is the latest in a series of show-stopping indie-horror to sweep the 2020s film landscape. First debuting in March 2024 at the South By Southwest film festival in Austin, Texas, Azrael disappeared soon afterwards, seemingly sharing its fate with other completed but shelved projects. Thankfully, it found a new home on horror streaming platform Shudder. Now, the movie will hit theaters on September 27th, just in time for Halloween. Starring Samara Weaving of The Babysitter fame as the title character, Azrael is a fight for survival in a world after the Rapture, where a group of human survivors live in fear of the voiceless demons that walk the Earth and demand sacrifice.
As an act of penance in this post-Rapture world, a group of survivors formed a cult where speech is treated as the ultimate sin. Here, members zealously worship a pregnant priestess, perform ritual sacrifices,...

In this week’s episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo has no words to describe the apocalyptic thriller “Azrael.” The film takes place in a silent world where a devout matriarchal society relentlessly pursues a young woman, Azrael, who has escaped their captivity. Once recaptured, she faces a grim fate—destined to be sacrificed to an ancient force lurking in the wilderness. The E.L. Katz (“Teacup”) film stars Samara Weaving, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Katarina Unt, and more.

Mayhem, Ready or Not, and Scream VI star Samara Weaving continues her hot streak in horror with Azrael, a dialogue-free survival horror movie that gets biblical with the carnage.

Azrael, the latest from director E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills) and writer Simon Barrett, takes the golden rule of showing, not telling, to heart. Samara Weaving takes on the title role in this survival horror movie set in a post-Rapture world where speaking is forbidden. It makes for a fascinating experiment in dialogue-free horror, where most the world building is left to the viewer to discern amidst minimalist storytelling and propulsive action.
A text card reveals that the Rapture has already happened when we meet Azrael, a terrified woman on the run with her lover (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett). Azrael is terrified and on edge, constantly looking over her shoulder as her lover tries to soothe her. They can’t say what they’re running from, though, as the cross-shaped scars on their throats indicate speaking is an impossibility for either. It doesn’t take long for their cultish persecutors to reveal themselves,...

More family films hitting cinemas this weekend with DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s feature take of Peter Brown’s New York Times bestseller, The Wild Robot, however, unlike Paramount/Hasbro’s Transformers One last weekend, this one is mom/female leaning. Opening weekend at 3,900 theaters is pegged at $20M+.
That’s around the average start for an animated major studio movie in September and not that far from where we saw Transformers One last weekend with $24.6M. Also keep in mind that it’s original animation, and that’s always a lower bar start than established feature cartoons.
Wild Robot will have the vast majority of premium screens with 380 Imax hubs with all showtimes up to primetime. After that time, Lionsgate’s Megalopolis from Francis Ford Coppola will have evening Imax showtimes in key metropolitan locations, repping around 200 of its 1,700 theater count. Samara Weaving has confirmed her return in Ready or Not 2. The actor recently shared that she is on board to reprise her role from the 2019 original film as Grace for the upcoming horror sequel.
During an interview with ComicBook.com to promote her new horror movie Azrael, Weaving confirmed that she would be back for Ready or Not 2. "I'm all in. I think we're all in, I don't know. Five years ago, genre regular Samara Weaving starred in a very cool horror comedy called Ready or Not, which was directed by Radio Silence members Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who went on to make the two most recent Scream sequels and the “Dracula’s daughter” movie Abigail. Earlier this year, it was announced that a sequel is now moving forward, with Escape Room director Adam Robitel taking the helm of a Ready or Not 2 that Radio Silence, still on board as producers, has promised will be “an absolute banger.” Now, during an interview with ComicBook.com, Weaving has confirmed that she is “all in” on the sequel.

Sebastian Stan gets a little more than he bargained for with A Different Man, a wild psychological ride. There's also Megalopolis, the ambitious sci-fi social parable that writer-director Francis Ford Coppola spent decades developing, finally hits theaters.
