British actor and filmmaker Sir Kenneth Branagh has been a Hollywood staple for years, between his adaptations of Shakespeare plays like 1993's "Much Ado About Nothing" and 1996's "Hamlet" and blockbuster projects like "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," as well as the first "Thor" movie in 2021. He also won his first Academy Award in 2021 thanks to the autobiographical film "Belfast," which was based on his own childhood in the Northern Irish city during the Troubles. Branagh is clearly a curiously-minded and ambitious filmmaker and performer who's always looking for a new challenge, which might explain why, in 2017, he started adapting Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot stories for the big screen.

Michelle Yeoh would have been the third Bond Girl to reprise her role in the franchise (Eunice Gayson and Lea Seydoux each appeared in two James Bond films). Yeoh played agent Wai Lin in Tomorrow Never Dies and was offered to return in Die Another Day; she declined due to scheduling conflicts. "I was asked one time, to come back to do a cameo," she told Radio Times. "But unfortunately I was filming, I was producing my own movie. Sometimes life throws tough choices at you."

Michael Schlesinger, a renowned repertory executive who worked at United Artists Classics, Paramount and Sony Repertory, died Jan. 9. He was 74.

Schlesinger died at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, where he was being treated for a rare form of cancer.

Schlesinger was known for being instrumental in restoring and releasing classic films over multiple decades. While working at Sony Repertory as vice president, he oversaw the 70mm restoration of “Lawrence of Arabia.” When he was at Paramount Pictures Distribution, he worked on the 50th anniversary release of “Citizen Kane,” which included Orson Welles’ famously incomplete “It’s All True.”

Joseph McBride, an author and film historian and friend of Schlesinger’s, wrote in his tribute that “Mike was a true mensch. Every cinephile had a friend in Mike Schlesinger. The feature-length project, which debuts on Paramount+ on January 24, 2025, is the first streaming movie in the Star Trek franchise. The upcoming Section 31, which was directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, stars Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as the Mirror Universe version of Philippa Georgiou, the character she originated on 24 episodes of the streaming series Star Trek: Discovery. This version of Georgiou joins Starfleet on a risky mission where billions of lives are at risk.

Universal is looking to Jamie Lee Curtis to pick up where Angela Lansbury left off for the studio’s Murder, She Wrote movie. There’s no deal yet, but Curtis is the studio’s top choice to play Jessica Fletcher in a film based on the 12-season CBS series.

The script is by Dumb Money scribes Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, and Lord Miller and Amy Pascal are producing it. Who doesn’t love a good whodunit? The setting is usually so simple that you don’t expect anything to go wrong. The characters are relatable and only a little off-kilter to make you trust only your instincts. As soon as you start to settle in, something criminal happens, thereby sending everything into a state of chaos. And the best part is when it all comes together in the most satisfying, cathartic, and sometimes anticlimactic fashion imaginable. I have grown up reading and watching anything that’s related to Satyajit Ray’s Feluda. Which obviously means that I have read and watched almost everything that has “Sherlock Holmes” written on it. Amongst the more recent stuff, I think Game Night is a masterpiece. The Knives Out movies are excellent. Neeyat and A Haunting in Venice really caught me by surprise. Also, Bodies Bodies Bodies has to be one of the most subversive whodunits out there.

Agatha Christie wrote over 60 detective novels, and many of them revolved around famous fictional detectives Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple. The author's novels have been adapted into stage plays, movies, television series, and more, and Kenneth Branagh is one of the latest directors to tackle some of the most famous Hercule Poirot novels.

The first film Poirot Branagh adapted, Murder on the Orient Express, is heading to a different streaming service. The murder mystery will be available on Prime Video starting Dec. 1. The film was distributed by 20th Century Fox, and featured a star-studded ensemble cast, with Gladiator director Ridley Scott producing alongside Branagh, Mark Gordon, Simon Kinberg, Judy Hofflund, and Michael Schaefer. It’s time to travel to a galaxy far, far away once again, as a new Star Wars trilogy has been confirmed to be in the works. Lucasfilm has signed a deal with filmmaker Simon Kinberg to develop three new films based on the iconic franchise.

The Star Wars series already features three trilogies: the originals, released between 1977 and 1983, the prequels, released between 1999 and 2005; and the recent sequels, released by Disney between 2015 and 2019.

Simon Kinberg to Create New Star Wars Trilogy

The project is still in the early stages of Development, and reports suggest that it will feature a fresh storyline after The Skywalker Saga concluded with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. However, a source quoted by Deadline has revealed that the new films could also continue the tale of Luke Skywalker, becoming episodes 10 to 12 of the overall franchise.

Lucasfilm has hired the prolific writer and producer to write and produce a new trilogy of “Star Wars” films. An early report insinuated are that this will actually be chapters 10 – 12 of the Skywalker Saga, continuing the path that most recently concluded with “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019. But there are others that insist this is a standalone series, something akin to the trilogies that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and, separately, Rian Johnson, were working on for the company. It is being referred to as a “new saga.”

Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage is stepping into the little gray cells of one of the worlds most iconic detectives, as he lends his voice to Agatha Christies Hercule Poirot in a new Audible production. Dinklage will lead a huge cast for the dramatized version of Christies classic novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, in the latest iteration of the character. The synopsis provided by the official Agatha Christie website reads:

The upcoming adaptation will tell "the story of an injured and traumatized Captain Hastings (Himesh Patel), who has been invited to a large country estate (Styles Court) to recover after serving in World War I. With tensions tearing the family apart, what seems like a perfect haven soon turns into a nightmare, as the matriarch of the family Emily Inglethorp (Harriet Walter) is brutally murdered.

Hilary Swank has been cast in the upcoming third season of Yellowjackets. According to Deadline, she'll be a recurring guest star with an option to bump up to a series regular should the show get renewed for a fourth season. No details have yet been released as to who Swank will play.

Exclusive: Kyle Allen (A Haunting in Venice), Francesca Carpanini and Abubakr Ali (Grendel) are the latest talent to join Kathryn Bigelow’s new Netflix film.

The untitled thriller also stars Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Jared Harris, Greta Lee, Gabriel Basso, Anthony Ramos, Tracy Letts, Moses Ingram, Malachi Beasley and Aminah Nieves. The film’s title and plot remain under wraps, though sources tell Deadline it will be set at the White House as a national crisis unfolds.

Allen recently wrapped The Life List for Netflix starring opposite Sofia Carson. He was most recently seen in Kenneth Branagh’s film for 20th Century, A Haunting in Venice and the Hulu film Rosaline, opposite Kaitlyn Dever. The reboot of the cult classic crime comedy Cluehas found the perfect director, with Zach Cregger, who is best known for the horror movie hit Barbarian, reportedly joining the project. Earlier this year, Sony acquired the film and television rights to the Clue franchise, with Sony's TriStar Pictures and Hasbro Entertainment all set to produce the new take on the board game. The news of Cregger's involvement comes from notable insider Jeff Sneider, who writes:

There was a time not too long ago when whodunnits seemed to be a dusty relic of cinema’s past. Mysteries about a cast of colorful characters at the center of a murder case, and the intrepid detective investigating them, were far and few between in movie theaters for what felt like decades, and the rare films to feature those plots seldom attracted much attention. But nowadays, the genre is back, baby.

In 2017, Kenneth Branagh directed and starred as the iconic detective Hercule Poirot in “Murder on the Orient Express,” based on one of mystery writer Agatha Christie’s most famous novels. It was the first high-profile Christie adaptation to hit theaters in ages, after 1988’s “Appointment with Death.” The movie was highly successful, and Branagh has returned to that Poirot mustache with “Death on the Nile” and “A Haunting in Venice,” the latter of which opened in theaters this month.

IndieWire can confirm that Patricia Arquette and Michael Sheen are among the new cast members for Branagh’s upcoming psychological thriller “The Last Disturbance Of Madeline Hynde.” Jodie Comer was previously announced as the lead star.

“The Last Disturbance Of Madeline Hynde” is billed as a “contemporary psychological thriller” but the official logline is being kept under wraps. Branagh writes and directs the feature which is being independently financed through his “Belfast” producers’ banners.
