Filmmakers Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden cut their teeth on indie films, great little Sundance classics like “Half Nelson,” which earned a then 26-year-old Ryan Gosling his first Oscar nomination, “Sugar,” and “Mississippi Grind,” which was maybe Ryan Reynolds’ last great indie film performance. The duo detoured a little bit after that, taking on Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” and directing TV such as “Billions,” “Mrs.

Are you ready to see how freaky Pedro Pascal and Ben Mendelsohn can get when they're in a movie together? Lionsgate is throwing it back to the '80s with the first trailer for Freaky Tales, an action-adventure comedy of epic proportions. Written and directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, the co-directors of Captain Marvel, this new take on a classic formula seeks to reinvigorate the heist narrative by combining four interconnected stories into one major showdown. Looking like a love letter to '80s hip-hop and action movie culture, Freaky Tales is finally ready to debut to audiences ahead of its April 4 theatrical release.
You might be asking yourself: what kind of project could bring together Pascal, Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Tom Hanks, and Normani? A multi-genre, Oakland-based crime film is a good guess, but don't fret, the trailer is finally here to show audiences what's in store. Lionsgate...

“Freaky Tales” is upon us. The new film from writers-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, over a year ago, and now Lionsgate is finally releasing this colorful, violent and wholly unique anthology set in 1987 Oakland.
In the vein of “Pulp Fiction,” the story follows various disparate characters whose stories intersect across a few days in the California city: an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector.
Pascal plays the debt collector who begrudgingly accepts one last job. Ben Mendelsohn is the corrupt cop. Dominique Thorne and Normani are a burgeoning rap duo. And “Top Gun: Maverick” breakout Jay Ellis is NBA star Sleepy Floyd.
The film is something of a fever dream with Boden and Fleck – who most recently directed “Captain Marvel” after a career made with indies like “Half Nelson” and “Mississippi Grind” – flexing...

If you’ve ever felt a tinge of nostalgia for the Bay Area in the 1980s, “Freaky Tales” is the movie for you.
The latest effort from filmmaking duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck — who cut their teeth on independent films like “Sugar” and “Mississippi Grind” before directing “Captain Marvel” — is an omnibus film comprised of four vignettes set in Oakland in 1987. The film is a send-up of just about everything that shaped ’80s pop culture, from hip-hop and sci-fi blockbusters to the decade’s biggest sports stars and kung fu movies. The film first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, with Lionsgate eventually picking it up for a theatrical release this April.
An official synopsis for the film reads: “Set in 1987 Oakland, ‘Freaky Tales’ is a multi-track mixtape of colorful characters — an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector — on...

Premiering over a year ago on the opening night of Sundance Film Festival, Freaky Tales was a hopeful return to proper filmmaking after Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck got sucked into the Marvel machine. Unfortunately, despite a game cast of Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, Angus Cloud, and (briefly) Tom Hanks, the scattershot 80s-set Oakland anthology didn’t quite live up to its midnight movie vibes. After holding on to it for some time, Lionsgate will now give the film a wide release on April 4 and the first trailer has arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “Set in 1987 Oakland, Freaky Tales is a multi-track mixtape of colorful characters — an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector — on a collision course in a fever dream of showdowns and battles. Hollywood has seen plenty of relationships with big age gaps, but when it comes to older women dating younger men, people suddenly tend to have different and negative reactions. At least that is what Sienna Miller herself felt when she initially got together with her boyfriend Oli Green, who is 15 years her junior.

Known for her captivating performance in The Edge of Love and American Sniper, the actress has never shied away from being transparent about her personal life. Having first met Green in 2021, Miller has been candid about their relationship and has never shied away from hitting back against haters for their ‘double standards.’
However, in a recent interview, the actress opened up about their differences and was initially annoyed that her boyfriend was so much younger than her. Jere is all you need to know about Sienna Miller and her love story with Oli Green.

Detective Pikachu was a unique voice acting role for Reynolds, showcasing his versatility beyond live-action films. Fireflies in the Garden was a forgotten drama where Reynolds explored a different side of his acting talents. Reynolds' supporting role in Mississippi Grind added depth to the comedy, emphasizing the dangers of addiction.
It seems like Ryan Reynolds is everywhere in modern cinema, but it's easy to forget that he's been omnipresent in movies for a long time now. The Canadian-born actor has made a name for himself as one of the most reliable stars in Hollywood, leveraging his charisma in lead roles in films like Free Guy and Deadpool. Ryan Reynold's best movies may be quite well-known by now, but his presence of film sets goes far beyond easy-to-remember blockbusters.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's "Mississippi Grind" is one of the best films ever made about gambling. This means it's actually about losing, and that's not a subject that sends folks flocking to the multiplex. This doesn't mean "Mississippi Grind" is a drag; it's a lively two-hander about two losers wending their way through the South in search of that ever elusive jackpot. But, as we see in the film, the high of even a big win vanishes rapidly. Ultimately, you return to your life and the mess you've probably made of it (gamblers aren't the most reliable of spouses/parents), and the losing resumes.
That's basically the story of "Mississippi Grind," which, unsurprisingly, made the project difficult to finance. Yes, Boden and Fleck had a terrific screenplay, and could point to the rave reviews for their first two features, "Half Nelson" and "Sugar," as proof that they could...

When "Deadpool" opened to $132 million in North America over Valentine's Day weekend in 2016, everything changed for Ryan Reynolds. Up until that point of his career, he'd been an immensely appealing B-level star with A-list potential. His best shot at hitting the blockbuster big time came when he slipped on the power ring as Hal Jordan in 2011's "Green Lantern." When that not-as-bad-as-its-reputation-but-not-all-that-good-either $200 million gamble stalled out with a $220 million worldwide gross, Reynolds was back to being the wisecracking comedic engine of mostly ho-hum action movies and, on occasion, a very interesting actor in pretty good indie dramas.
That he hasn't made anything in that latter category of movies post-"Deadpool" is a bummer for those of us who think Reynolds has more to offer as a performer than a shotgun spray of smug quips in forgettable four-quadrant product like "Detective Pikachu" and "Free Guy." The "Deadpool" movies are clearly personal for Reynolds,...

Criminal: John Hawkes, Pat Healy, & more join Charlie Hunnam in Prime Video’s Ed Brubaker adaptation
John Hawkes has been one of my favorite character actors since he first came to my attention back in the ’90s with roles in films like Roadracers, Night of the Scarecrow, From Dusk Till Dawn, and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, so it’s cool to hear (from Deadline) that he’s going directly from a multi-episode role in the latest season of True Detective to landing a recurring role in the Prime Video series adaptation of Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips. Hawkes, along with Pat Healy (Better Call Saul), Taylor Selé (Bmf), and Logan Browning (Dear White People), join previously announced cast members Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Adria Arjona (Hit Man), Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water), and Kadeem Hardison (A Different World).

At the start of the year, it was announced that Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, is getting a series adaptation from Prime Video. Now Variety reports that Adria Arjona of Morbius and the upcoming Netflix release Hit Man and Richard Jenkins of The Shape of Water and The Visitor are set to star in the series.
Criminal tells “the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.” The official logline for the series says it will show viewers an interlocking universe of crime stories.
Brubaker has written the script for the pilot and will serve as showrunner of the series alongside Jordan Harper (Hightown). Brubaker and Harper are also executive producing with Sean Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, Phillip Barnett, and Legendary Television.

While Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds pushed mountains to get the Marvel film made, he has shown equal commitment to his other roles that were not part of a billion-dollar franchise. The actor starred along with fellow MCU co-star Ben Mendelsohn in the comedy-drama Mississippi Grind, where the duo played the roles of gamblers.
Reynolds revealed that the two had gone on a road trip to find the shadiest gambling bars to research their characters. The Free Guy star said that they came across a wide range of characters when they visited these bars that were far from the luxurious casinos in Las Vegas. He also mentioned how people were addicted to gambling and how similar it was to drug addiction.

Between Orson Krennic in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an evil corporate tycoon in Ready Player One, and the Sheriff of Nottingham in 2018’s Robin Hood, it’s safe to say that Ben Mendelsohn has a monopoly on playing over-the-top eccentric villains. Marvel fans would be forgiven for initially expecting his character Talos in Captain Marvel to be a villain when the real twist was that he was one of the heroes! While those films are a great use of Mendelsohn’s ability to steal a scene, they’re not the best representation of his abilities as an actor; he’s shown in films like Mississippi Grind and Babyteeth that he can play complex anti-heroes. Long before he stood by Nick Fury's side in Secret Invasion, Mendelsohn proved that he could add a complex, dark element to a prestige television show with his work on Netflix’s crime series Bloodline as Danny Rayburn.

Before the early-morning Sundance premiere of Freaky Tales, one of the festival’s programmers introduced the movie as an explosive, crazy ride that would surely wake an under-caffeinated audience. That same sentiment was shared moments later in the opening frames, promising that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s Oakland-based 1980s mosaic would be a “hella wild” ride. Like the common trope of freeze-frame narration that begins in media res, it’s a bold choice to tell––instead of show––your audience what they’re about to get into.
And what do you get into with Freaky Tales? Unfortunately, something clever, self-satisfied, and much sleepier than its predetermined adrenaline rush. Its filmmakers made their first splash at Sundance with Half Nelson in 2006, eventually compounding their indie success through sensitive (It’s Kind of a Funny Story) and smart (Mississippi Grind) features that showcased their writing skills and casting decisions. In recent years, a lot of ink has been spilled about the Sundance-to-studio pipeline, where talented independent filmmakers are plucked out of festival lineups to direct the latest Warner Bros. monster movie, Marvel installment or season of prestige TV. Less documented is the journey back.
Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will find themselves at Sundance a decade after their feature Mississippi Grind sold to then-little-known distributor A24 in 2015 and 18 years after the 2006 premiere of their feature debut, Half Nelson, starring a then-little-known Ryan Gosling. Sundance revved up with the premiere of Freaky Tales tonight, a debut met with rousing applause, including at the film’s last title card that read, “In loving memory of Angus Cloud.”

Freaky Tales officially kicked off the 2024 Sundance Film Festival with Pedro Pascal as a soon-to-be-retired fixer and Jay Ellis as NBA All-Star and former Golden State Warrior Sleepy Floyd.
The Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck-directed film received the prime 7 p.m. slot at the Eccles Theater, with the audience giving it a warm welcome. The filmmakers, whose recent credits include Captain Marvel and Masters of the Air, were welcomed back to the festival, where their feature debut Half Nelson screened in 2006 and Mississippi Grind screened in 2015.
“The last time I was here with Mississippi Grind I had to lie to get on an airplane about how pregnant I was. I was so pregnant, and I had to pretend I was less pregnant than I was. And now the person I was pregnant with is here tonight, and she is 8 years old ,” said Boden ahead of the screening to audience applause.

It’s crazy for me to realize this, but this year marks my fifteenth time covering the Sundance Film Festival for JoBlo. Granted, two were virtual due to the pandemic, but I’ve made my way to lovely Park City, Utah, thirteen times over the years to catch all the most interesting indie flicks coming soon to theatres (or- nowadays – streaming). In my time at Sundance, I was lucky to see classics like Call Me By Your Name, Whiplash (at a genuinely unforgettable press screening), The Raid 2, and so many more.
While – to me anyway – the festival’s output has been a little lower key in recent years, every year I know I’ll see at least a ten or so titles that will resonate with our audience. Last year’s midnight entry, Talk to Me, made over $90 million worldwide, so even in a quiet year, there’s a chance a blockbuster will emerge.

Did Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds get wind of Patrick H. Willems' "When Movie Stars Become Brands" video calling them out for prioritizing their business enterprises over their art? Less than 24 hours after the news broke that The Rock is joining forces with A24 and director Ben Safdie to take a break from his typical (which is a polite way of saying "boring") movie roles with the mixed martial arts biopic "The Smashing Machine," the trailer has dropped for "If," an original Reynolds-led fantasy comedy from a bona fide filmmaker.
Ever since "Deadpool" catapulted him onto the A-list, Reynolds has focused less on tackling intriguing projects across a wide range of genres (like he'd done up until that point in his career) and more on cultivating a brand that allows him to act while also promoting his various other professional ventures like his Aviation American Gin line or his stake in Mint Mobile.

Fresh off the strike and newly back to work, American writer-director Dee Rees has set her sights on her next feature – a stylized dark comedy meant to visualize a central character’s frantic stream of consciousness.
“It’s a weird, experimental thing,” says Rees, who’s currently serving on the jury of this year’s Marrakech Film Festival. “[I’ve explored] comedic elements in my films, but this is the first time where it’s a kind of a dark, sad satire.”
While the “Pariah” and “Mudbound” filmmaker had toyed with this latest project for years, she picked up her pen anew once the writers strike concluded and then committed full-on following an opportune encounter in Marrakech.
“People will come to you with what they think you should do, or what they think you’d be good at,” she tells Variety. “So I try to still listen to that kind of voice. I...

The Free Guy cast features a great ensemble of talented actors audiences certainly recognize from previous roles. Directed by Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy, Free Guy follows the story of Guy, an ordinary Joe living in Free City. Guy has a mundane life as a bank teller, always getting the same exact coffee order, always wearing the same exact clothes, always meeting his best friend in the same spot, and never deviating from his routine. But when he sees the girl of his dreams, it startles him out of his rut, and he starts to change things up.
Soon, Guy learns that he's just an Npc in Free City 2, a Grand Theft Auto-style video game that's about to be destroyed, and it's up to him to save himself and the residents of Free City. The meeting of the real world and an artificial, computer-generated one is a premise that's...

The Sundance Film Festival is celebrated as America’s premiere showcase for independent film and a launchpad for up-and-coming filmmakers making deeply personal movies, often on shoestring budgets. But the storied festival is also becoming known for something else: a pipeline for talent into some of Marvel’s biggest superhero films.
From Chloe Zhao (“Eternals”) to Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok”), Disney’s Marvel Studios has tapped Sundance talent with notable regularity.
A top dealmaker gave a brutally honest reason for what has become a pattern:
“It’s because they’re young, cheap, and will follow Feige’s rules,” the dealmaker said, referring to Marvel Studios president and keeper of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kevin Feige.

Exclusive: Here is a fun project coming together. Deadline is hearing that Captain Marvel writer-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have come on to write, direct and produce the drama Freaky Tales for eOne and Macro. Insiders say along with eOne, Jelani Johnson and Poppy Hanks will produce on behalf of Macro.
eOne had no comment on the project.
A source close to the project describes it as composed of four interconnected stories set in 1987 Oakland, CA. The movie is a love letter to the music, movies, sports, politics, people, places and memories — some true, some invented — that Fleck grew up with in the ’80s. On the surface each story appears to exist in a world familiar to our own, but the Oakland of Freaky Tales hovers just beyond our knowable universe. Sure you can reach out and touch it, but it’s going to be very sticky.

Home to films like “Lady Bird,” “Eighth Grade” and “Mid90s,” A24 is synonymous with a certain brand of indie, auteur-driven coming-of-age story. The company’s latest is “Funny Pages,” the debut feature film from writer-director Owen Kline (who you might recognize as Frank from “The Squid and the Whale”). Set in the suburbs of New Jersey, “Funny Pages” follows Robert (Daniel Zolghadri), a talented high schooler determined to make his way as a cartoonist. When his beloved teacher suddenly passes away, he rebels against his upper-middle class upbringing and abandons future plans to attend art school.
Robert’s decision to drop out of school, rent sketchy (i.e. illegal) lodgings in a boiler room and take a low-paying assistant job bring him into the path of Wallace (Matthew Maher), a former employee at one of the comic magazines Robert idolizes. And just like that, winter has come again. HBO Max’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by the return of the king. Or more accurately: the return of the queen … of the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Martin’s lore. When dragon fights dragon, the realm will be torn asunder. But the viewer will certainly delight in all the Targaryen action.

An impressive slate of A24 films are coming to HBO Max next month, including Oscar-winners like 2015’s “Room” and Alex Garland’s directorial debut “Ex Machina.”
