“Freaky Tales” is upon us. The new film from writers-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, over a year ago, and now Lionsgate is finally releasing this colorful, violent and wholly unique anthology set in 1987 Oakland.

In the vein of “Pulp Fiction,” the story follows various disparate characters whose stories intersect across a few days in the California city: an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector.

Pascal plays the debt collector who begrudgingly accepts one last job. Ben Mendelsohn is the corrupt cop. Dominique Thorne and Normani are a burgeoning rap duo. And “Top Gun: Maverick” breakout Jay Ellis is NBA star Sleepy Floyd.

If you’ve ever felt a tinge of nostalgia for the Bay Area in the 1980s, “Freaky Tales” is the movie for you.

The latest effort from filmmaking duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck — who cut their teeth on independent films like “Sugar” and “Mississippi Grind” before directing “Captain Marvel” — is an omnibus film comprised of four vignettes set in Oakland in 1987. The film is a send-up of just about everything that shaped ’80s pop culture, from hip-hop and sci-fi blockbusters to the decade’s biggest sports stars and kung fu movies. The film first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, with Lionsgate eventually picking it up for a theatrical release this April.

Premiering over a year ago on the opening night of Sundance Film Festival, Freaky Tales was a hopeful return to proper filmmaking after Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck got sucked into the Marvel machine. Unfortunately, despite a game cast of Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, Angus Cloud, and (briefly) Tom Hanks, the scattershot 80s-set Oakland anthology didn’t quite live up to its midnight movie vibes. At the start of the year, it was announced that Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, is getting a series adaptation from Prime Video. Now Variety reports that Adria Arjona of Morbius and the upcoming Netflix release Hit Man and Richard Jenkins of The Shape of Water and The Visitor are set to star in the series.

Criminal tells “the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.” The official logline for the series says it will show viewers an interlocking universe of crime stories.

Exclusive: Captain Marvel writer-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are set to direct the first four episodes of Prime Video’s Criminal, a drama based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips.

Criminal was ordered to series in January and is currently in pre-production in Portland. Brubaker, who penned the pilot script, co-showruns with crime fiction author Jordan Harper (Hightown).

The TV show is described as an interlocking universe of crime stories. As Brubaker explained to Deadline in a 2019 interview, “Criminal tells the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.”

Brubaker and Harper executive produce alongside Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, Philipp Barnett and Legendary Television. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.

While Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds pushed mountains to get the Marvel film made, he has shown equal commitment to his other roles that were not part of a billion-dollar franchise. The actor starred along with fellow MCU co-star Ben Mendelsohn in the comedy-drama Mississippi Grind, where the duo played the roles of gamblers.

Reynolds revealed that the two had gone on a road trip to find the shadiest gambling bars to research their characters. The Free Guy star said that they came across a wide range of characters when they visited these bars that were far from the luxurious casinos in Las Vegas. He also mentioned how people were addicted to gambling and how similar it was to drug addiction.

Sundance revved up with the premiere of Freaky Tales tonight, a debut met with rousing applause, including at the film’s last title card that read, “In loving memory of Angus Cloud.”

The Euphoria actor died last year of a drug overdose at 25. His role is small in Freaky Tales, but Cloud “gave such a great performance, and was just there to have so much fun with,” said Jay Ellis, one of the film’s stars. “Rest in peace to Angus.”

Freaky Tales officially kicked off the 2024 Sundance Film Festival with Pedro Pascal as a soon-to-be-retired fixer and Jay Ellis as NBA All-Star and former Golden State Warrior Sleepy Floyd.

The Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck-directed film received the prime 7 p.m. slot at the Eccles Theater, with the audience giving it a warm welcome. The filmmakers, whose recent credits include Captain Marvel and Masters of the Air, were welcomed back to the festival, where their feature debut Half Nelson screened in 2006 and Mississippi Grind screened in 2015.

“The last time I was here with Mississippi Grind I had to lie to get on an airplane about how pregnant I was. I was so pregnant, and I had to pretend I was less pregnant than I was. And now the person I was pregnant with is here tonight, and she is 8 years old ,” said Boden ahead of the screening to audience applause.

It’s crazy for me to realize this, but this year marks my fifteenth time covering the Sundance Film Festival for JoBlo. Granted, two were virtual due to the pandemic, but I’ve made my way to lovely Park City, Utah, thirteen times over the years to catch all the most interesting indie flicks coming soon to theatres (or- nowadays – streaming). In my time at Sundance, I was lucky to see classics like Call Me By Your Name, Whiplash (at a genuinely unforgettable press screening), The Raid 2, and so many more.

While – to me anyway – the festival’s output has been a little lower key in recent years, every year I know I’ll see at least a ten or so titles that will resonate with our audience. Last year’s midnight entry, Talk to Me, made over $90 million worldwide, so even in a quiet year, there’s a chance a blockbuster will emerge.

Among the alumni are Steven Soderbergh, whose landmark film “Sex, Lies and Videotape” debuted at the 1989 fest; Debra Granik, whose Best Picture nominated “Winter’s Bone” won the Grand Jury Dramatic prize at the 2010 festival; and Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who will premiere their fourth movie at Sundance following 2006’s “Half Nelson,” 2008’s “Sugar” and 2015’s “Mississippi Grind.”

Fresh off the strike and newly back to work, American writer-director Dee Rees has set her sights on her next feature – a stylized dark comedy meant to visualize a central character’s frantic stream of consciousness.

“It’s a weird, experimental thing,” says Rees, who’s currently serving on the jury of this year’s Marrakech Film Festival. “[I’ve explored] comedic elements in my films, but this is the first time where it’s a kind of a dark, sad satire.”

Laika, the Portland-based animation studio behind movies such as Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, has hired Jeremy Kipp Walker and Chaz Salembier as part of a push into live-action filmmaking.

Deadline is hearing that Captain Marvel writer-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have come on to write, direct and produce the drama Freaky Tales for eOne and Macro. Insiders say along with eOne, Jelani Johnson and Poppy Hanks will produce on behalf of Macro.

An impressive slate of A24 films are coming to HBO Max next month, including Oscar-winners like 2015’s “Room” and Alex Garland’s directorial debut “Ex Machina.”

A total of 28 A24 films will arrive on the streamer on Aug. 1, timed to the studio’s tenth anniversary and marking the largest collection of A24 films made available to stream on the platform. Much of the lineup consists of films released prior to 2016, when A24 was still a distribution house and not yet the full-fledged studio it is today.

Some buzzy titles such as “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Eighth Grade,” “Mid90s” and dozens more are not on this list because of prior deals the studio set up with other streamers. Ryan Reynolds has been selected to receive the 36th American Cinematheque Award, with the organization saying Tuesday it has set its annual tribute gala for November 17 at the Beverly Hilton.

The event, which always attracts one of the most A-list crowds, is an annual fundraiser for the nonprofit organization that runs the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, Los Feliz 3 Theatre in Los Feliz, and Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.
