The movie was confirmed in December 2024, with critically acclaimed filmmaker Mike Flanagan set to write the script but no director. The search for the person who would direct the film continued well into 2025, with two potential horror directors reportedly in the final stages to direct the film, Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare) and James Watkins (Speak No Evil). Per The Hollywood Reporter, Watkins is officially set to direct Clayface.

After several months of searching, Speak No Evil helmer James Watkins has been chosen to direct the feature based on the Batman villain, which has a script from horror maestro Mike Flanagan.

Sources say that DC co-chief James Gunn met with Watkins Thursday for a final presentation that led to the nod of nabbing the gig. A deal will now be hammered out.

Clayface was first introduced in 1940 and known for his ability to shape-shift. A new career-spanning Rush anthology titled Rush 50 will include previously unreleased tracks and fan-requested material.

The collection is out March 21st and will arrive on vinyl as a 7-lp box set and on CD in a four-disc box set. It marks the first-ever career-spanning anthology from Rush.

Benedict held various positions at Studiocanal from 2012 through 2020 including as senior acquisitions manager in the U.K., picking up such titles as David Mackenzie’s Hell or High Water, Yeon Sang-ho’s Train to Busan, S. Craig Zahler’s Dragged Across Concrete, and Thomas Vinterberg’s Oscar winner Another Round. Martin Scorsese is executive producing “Escape,” the next film from Spanish writer-director Rodrigo Cortés, who burst onto the international scene directing Ryan Reynolds in the 2010 Sundance hit “Buried.”

Set to go into production at the end of May, Cortés’ first Spanish-language film since his debut feature, 2007 madcap dark comedy “The Contestant,” “Escape” stars Mario Casas, a Spanish Academy Award Goya winner for 2020’s “Cross the Line.”

Exclusive: Christopher Reich’s Simon Riske book series is headed to the screen as Netflix has re-teamed with Edward Berger, the Oscar-winning director, co-writer and producer of the streamer’s All Quiet on the Western Front, on a drama series adaptation, sources tell Deadline. Berger is set to direct the international spy thriller, in early development at Netflix UK, which is being written by Rowan Joffe. Richard Hatch, the actor who played Apollo in the original Battlestar Galactica attempted to revive the show in the late 1990s, but it's for the best that audiences got the Ronald D. Moore reboot instead. Written by Hatch and Sophie La Porte, his girlfriend at the time, Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming was one of several BSG projects being developed at the turn of the century. As well as the Hatch project and the successful Moore reboot, Bryan Singer and original BSG creator Glen A. Larson had separate movie proposals in development.

Conceived as a pilot for an eventual TV show, Second Coming ignored the events of Battlestar sequel series Galactica 1980 to pick up where the original show left off. “Coda” producer Philippe Rousselet’s next movie “Maestro” has been sold to major territories by Orange Studio which hosted a market screening at Cannes.

“Maestro” is adapted from Joseph Cesar’s Oscar-nominated, Cannes-prizewinning Israeli film “Footnote.” The movie is directed by Bruno Chiche and stars Yvan Attal, Pierre Arditi, Miou-Miou and Pascale Arbillot. “Maestro” follows a father and a son, The Dumars, who are music conductors.

Orange Studio has sold the film to leading distributors around the world, including in Japon (Gaga), Canada (Az), Israel (Lev Cinema), Portugal (Nos Lusomundo), Benelux (Vertigo), Germany (Wild Bunch Germany), Italy (Bim), Spain (Vertigo) and South Korea (T-cast). Variety has been nominated for 72 Southern California Journalism Awards, including best website, two for print journalist of the year, three for entertainment journalist of the year, and six for criticism of TV, music and books.

The awards, given out by the Los Angeles Press Club, honor outstanding journalism in the region across print, digital, radio and broadcast platforms.

Executive editor Ramin Setoodeh and deputy music editor Jem Aswad are both up for print journalist of the year. TV critic Daniel D’Addario, chief film critic Owen Gleiberman and senior writer/chief music critic Chris Willman are all nominated for entertainment journalist of the year. And Variety had a whopping three nominees for music criticism including Steven Gaydos, Gleiberman and Aswad. Chief TV critic Caroline Framke and D’Addario were also both nominated for criticism of television honors.

Exclusive: J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, the creator-EPs behind Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, have set up their 2017 Black List screenplay Escape with The Hideaway Entertainment (Cherry), tapping James Watkins to direct.

The action-adventure pic is inspired by the true story of convicts Robert Greenhill and Alexander Pearce, and their sensational journey of survival after escaping from prison, which scandalized the Victorian-era world. While the story has previously inspired songs, works of fiction and non-fiction, news articles, tall tales, art, illustrations and other printed materials, it has never before been adapted as a large-scale feature film.

I disagree with other critics all the time, and don’t generally blink an eye about it, but as soon as the news dropped that “Eternals,” the Marvel epic directed by Chloé Zhao, had received the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score (48% fresh) of any film in the 13-year history of the MCU, making it the first official “Rotten” film in the series, my hidden-agenda detector went on high alert. Variety film awards editor Clayton Davis has been awarded the excellence in entertainment journalism award by the National Association of Latino Independent Producers. Nalip made the announcement on Thursday.

“Latinx voices are essential in the entertainment industry, which is why we want to emphasize the importance of journalists spreading the message through their platforms,” Nalip wrote in its announcement on Twitter. “We are honored to present Clayton Davis with this award as he has worked diligently as an editor at Variety.”

The Netflix Top 10 most-watched movies list is always an interesting reflection of what subscribers are currently digging, with the chart typically made up of a handful of Netflix Originals, some obscure titles that many probably overlooked and at least a few of the usual suspects. But today, the Top 10 is being dominated by superhero actors, with at least 6 of them showing up across the various films that are on the list.

To start with, the #1 movie on Netflix right now is Enola Holmes, which stars Millie Bobby Brown as the titular heroine. But perhaps of most interest to comic book fans will be Henry Cavill playing the iconic Sherlock Holmes. And suffice it to say, the internet can’t get enough of him in the role.

Netflix has become the home for underrated and overlooked titles this year, covering everything from horror oddities to star vehicles. While some random movies do show up on the service’s top 10 lists, many of these end up being worth a rewatch, or seen for the first time if missed upon their initial release. While it’s a quieter than usual month overall for new movies on Netflix, the past seven days did bring us a handful of interesting films to help keep folks entertained. Ranging from classic social commentary, to under the radar comedy-dramas, to a criminally underrated action flick, there’s more than likely to be a pic that arrived this week to suit your tastes.

So, without further ado, let’s break down the best new movies that hit the platform over the last several days.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)

Headlining this week’s recommendations is Milos Forman’s award-winning drama. Ostensibly a social commentary that takes its aim at the American psychiatric system, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest centres on criminal Randle Patrick McMurphy (played brilliantly by the iconic Jack Nicholson), who pleads insanity to avoid hard labor, only to end up rallying up the patients within...

It’s been quite the month for Netflix so far, with plenty of new films and shows for subscribers to delve into during a time when socialization is widely off limits. Thankfully, there’s a bit of something for fans of every genre, too, such as the addition of Hilary Swank’s sci-fi drama Away, spooky mind-bender I’m Thinking of Ending Things and the family-friendly How to Train Your Dragon 2. But of course, that’s just scratching the surface of September’s offerings.

Idris Elba definitely possesses the screen presence, charisma and acting abilities to become a standout action hero, but for inexplicable reasons, his ventures into the genre have been overwhelmingly disappointing. The Losers and Takers both bombed at the box office a decade ago, and since then he’s gone on to star in a number of mediocre titles.

As well as being given very little to do as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Heimdall, the 48 year-old has lent support in the tedious Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and The Gunman, headlined infamous dud The Dark Tower, buried himself under prosthetics as Star Trek Beyond‘s one-note villain and seen his archetypal bad guy get blown off the screen by the combined star power of Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in Hobbs & Shaw.

Executive producer Willow Grylls has been appointed as co-chief executive officer of New Pictures, whose output includes “The Missing” and “Catherine the Great,” working alongside existing CEO Charlie Pattinson. Elaine Pyke also takes on a new role as creative director.

Grylls joined Pattinson and George Faber’s Company Pictures when it was set up, working initially in film development as well as business affairs. She then became a producer and series producer for television commencing with Martina Cole’s “The Take” for Sky One, starring Tom Hardy. She co-founded New Pictures alongside Pattinson and Pyke in 2013, executive producing across New Pictures output and specifically “The Missing,” “The Missing II” for BBC One/Starz, “Rellik” for BBC One/Cinemax, and “Requiem” for BBC One/Netflix.

She achieved further success recently with critically successful ITV drama “White House Farm,” which gained a consolidated 8 million viewers, becoming one of the most successful dramas on the channel this year.

Furie is a French and Belgium feature. This title looks at a family, returning from a holiday. Unfortunately, squatters have take over their home. Furie, also known as Get In or Die Trying (Uhm), has had a run on the film festival circuit, in 2019. Supposedly based on a true story, this feature has begun a home entertainment release in Europe. Directed by Olivier Abbou, this film centrally stars: Adama Niane (Baise-moi), Stéphane Caillard (The Take) and Paul Hamy. A trailer for the film was released in 2019 (found below) and new stills are available here, as well. The trailer is exclusively in French, with French subtitles. Some of the dialogue mentions: "no response on the phone," "squatters," "missing children" and a "plan." This Canadian's French could still use some improvement. However, the trailer does show one family struggling with a difficult situation, while terrorized by a group intent on class warfare.

Post Malone was Number One on the Rolling Stone Artists 500 chart once again while Torey Lanez saw a big jump to shake up the top 10 for the week of November 15th through November 21st.

Post Malone had yet another impressive week, clocking 112.7 million song streams, with “Circles” hitting Number Four on the Top 100 Songs chart with 15.4 million streams and Hollywood’s Bleeding landing at Number Three on the Top 200 Albums chart, moving 70,500 album-equivalent units. I know there’s a lot of controversy surrounding the film and some fans are wondering why a movie about Joker would even be made without Batman, but damn… this movie told an incredible character-driven story.

I remember going to the little independent cinema near where I lived with my dad and brothers over 20 years ago to watch The Blair Witch Project. We got there and the line to get tickets was around the block!

The marketing campaign for this film was freakin’ brilliant. At the time it was lightning in bottle because it was the first movie to start a viral craze online. People didn’t really know the power of internet marketing before this movie came out.

The marketing team was able to build a myth and legend around this and over half the people going into see the movie thought it was real! You can’t pull that kind of marketing off these days.

Exclusive: 20th Century Fox has secured the film rights to the war book Saving Bravo: The Greatest Rescue Mission in Navy Seal History by journalist Stephan Talty. Andrew Baldwin, who wrote The Outsider starring Jared Leto as well as the Idris Elba-led film The Take, is attached to adapt the screenplay. Logan producers Hutch Parker and Dan Wilson are producing.

Released October 30 via Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the story is about the rescue mission of Gene Hambleton, an Air Force Navigator who, equipped with classified secrets about advanced rocketry and radar systems, as well as the target cities in the Soviet Union that American missiles were aimed at, is taken down behind enemy lines.

After various attempts by different military branches, Navy Seal Tommy Norris and South Vietnamese commando Nguyen Van Kiet, disguised as Vietnamese fishermen, evaded 30,000 enemy troops and endured a rocket attack before finding the navigator and bringing him back alive.

Richard Madden, best known for playing Robb Stark on “Game of Thrones,” is in negotiations to join Taron Egerton in Paramount’s Elton John biopic “Rocketman” as the music icon’s longtime manager, John Reid.

Jamie Bell is also on board to play Bernie Taupin with Dexter Fletcher attached to helm the project. Lee Hall penned the script. Paramount Pictures will finance and distribute the pic.

Reid, a legendary music manager in the ’70s and ’80s who also helped with Queen’s rise to fame in the mid-’70s, managed John from 1970 to 1998. Along the way, the two also became lovers, but their romance ended after five years following the leak of a letter from John’s accountants detailing Reid’s spending that was uncovered by the Daily Mail. The two would continue to work together professionally until 1998.
