South Korean sales outfit Finecut has closed a raft of key deals for thriller A Girl With Closed Eyes ahead of its market premiere screening at the European Film Market (EFM).

The film, which stars Minha Kim from Apple TV+ series Pachinko, has been acquired for Japan, Poland (Media4Fun), Taiwan (Cola Films), Vietnam (Aeonbeta) and Cis (Red Castle Group) ahead of Berlin.

The story centres on a murder suspect and a detective with a shared past, reunited through the killing of a bestselling author, where hidden truths are uncovered as the investigation deepens.

Actor Eric Bana (Deliver Us from Evil) has joined the cast of Netflix’s upcoming survival thriller Apex, described as Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs, Deadline reports today.

Bana joins previously announced stars Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton (Carry-On).

Written by Jeremy Robbins (“The Purge” television series), Apex “follows a rock climber who finds herself being hunted in the wild.” Robbins’ spec script was selected as part of 2021’s The Black List, an annual buzzy compendium of the year’s most-liked unproduced Hollywood screenplays.

The spec script’s logline gives a better idea of the Silence of the Lambs comparison: “When an adrenaline junkie sets out to conquer a menacing river, she discovers that nature isn’t the only thing out for blood.” It’s the type of premise that feels designed to get the adrenaline pumping.

For more than two decades, filmmakers chased the lightning-in-a-bottle story of Jeff Buckley, one of the most gifted and promising musicians of his generation, who drowned in a Memphis river in May 1997 at the age of 30.

Blackpink member Jisoo and award-winning actor Park Jeong-min’s upcoming Korean zombie apocalypse series “Newtopia” is set to debut on Prime Video, the streaming service revealed on Wednesday.

South Korea’s Plus M Entertainment is set to launch sales on upcoming romantic drama Pavane: For A Dead Princess and action thriller Night Fever in Cannes.

Pavane: For A Dead Princess is directed by Lee Jong-pil, known for 2020 comedy drama Samjin Company English Class and 2015 period drama The Sound Of A Flower.

It will reunite Lee with Samjin actress Ko A-sung, who also played the lead in Because I Hate Korea, which opened last year’s Busan International Film Festival. Further cast includes Byun Yo-han of box office hit Hansan: Rising Dragon and Moon Sang-win of drama series Wedding Impossible.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, are teaming up with director Jonathan Liebesman – who they previously worked with on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – to make a werewolf movie called Wolf Night. Scott Derrickson has been set to direct an adaptation of Davis Grubb’s classic 1953 novel The Night of the Hunter for Universal Pictures, working from his script written with C. Robert Cargill, his longtime collaborator on The Black Phone, Doctor Strange and other projects.

Peter Gethers will produce through his KramMar Delicious Mystery Productions, alongside Amy Pascal, whose Pascal Pictures has a first-look deal with the studio.

The Night of the Hunter revolves around Harry Powell, a serial killer posing as a preacher, who marries a widow solely to gain access to her deceased husband’s hidden fortune. A couple of new genre movies are headed to Netflix in April, including M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and sequel Glass, but this coming month is sadly more about what’s *leaving* Netflix.

The horror films leaving Netflix in April 2024 include Day of the Dead: Bloodline, which will be leaving the streaming service on April 4. This one’s no huge loss for most fans, as the 2018 horror movie was another lackluster attempt to reanimate George Romero’s horror classic.

Deliver Us from Evil (2014) is leaving Netflix on April 11, director Scott Derrickson’s supernatural horror movie starring Eric Bana. The film was inspired by the real life experiences of retired NYPD sergeant Ralph Sarchie, particularly based on his book Beware the Night.

Both The Meg (2018) and Train to Busan (2016) are leaving Netflix on April 22, one a killer shark blockbuster and the other a critically acclaimed South Korean zombie masterpiece.

X-Men star Olivia Munn has revealed that she has been fighting an aggressive form of breast cancer since last year.

Posting on her Instagram account, Munn shared the news of her diagnosis to her fans and followers. "In the past ten months, I have had four surgeries," Munn wrote. "So many days spent in bed I can't even count and have learned more about cancer, cancer treatment and hormones then I ever could have imagined. Surprisingly, I've only cried twice. I guess I haven't felt like there was time to cry. My focus narrowed and I tabled any emotions that I felt would interfere with my ability to stay clearheaded." Star Wars: The Acolyte will be the first live-action project set during the High Republic era, and series star Amandla Stenberg says that period will lead to a different kind of story in the faraway galaxy.

"It's also a time of an institution, and it's a time in which conceptions around the Force are very strict. And I think what we're trying to explore within our show is when an institution has a singular conception of how power can be used. Echelon Studios, in collaboration with 815 Pictures, has officially picked up US distribution rights to Kim Sung-su's latest feature and box office hit, 12:12 The Day.

The historical action drama broke records last year, grossing $90m to become Korea's biggest film of 2023. Since its release, the box office sensation has received rave reviews from critics and left a lasting impression with audiences, and currently leads nominations at this year's Asian Film Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor.

Based on true events, 12:12 The Day is set against the backdrop of the real-life military coup that took place on 12 December 1979, which resulted in an eight-year military junta in South Korea. A release date for Star Wars: The Acolyte has reportedly been revealed.

As per a new report by Collider, The Acolyte is tentatively set to debut on Disney+ on June 5, 2024. This follows a recent report from Collider suggesting that the Star Wars series would be given a Summer 2024 premiere window on Disney+. As of now, however, the premiere date of June 5 has not yet been officially announced or confirmed by Lucasfilm or Disney. The new report noted that Disney did not confirm nor deny the release date's accuracy when asked to comment.

North American digital distributor Echelon Studios has come on board “12.12: The Day,” the highest grossing film from Korea last year.

The film has been on theatrical release in North America, through 815 Pictures since last year and grossed over $1 million. Echelon said that the film will have a streaming release later this year. It will also be available to pre-order to own on iTunes, Apple TV, Google Play, YouTube Movies, Vudu, Vimeo OnDemand and OnDemand Korea shortly.

Directed by Kim Sung-su and with a Korean gross exceeding $90 million, the action drama is based on true events in December 1979, which resulted in an eight-year military junta in South Korea.
