Don't worry. We are not here (now) to give you any spoiler alerts on the new Shonda Rhimes-produced Netflix series, The Residence. Why would we do that to you? You should decide to watch or not watch based on your own views. We don't need to give any key plot points away.
Still, if you decide you don't like it or do not want to watch it, just know that you will be going against what the critics think. Oh, wait just a second. That actually makes you want to watch less. Still, who can you trust, right?
The premise of the show goes like this: There is a murder at a State Dinner at the White House, and anyone can be a suspect, and nearly everyone is. This is a comedy, though, so do not be roped into thinking this is another White House drama that forces you...

While all eyes are currently on the arrival of Superman this summer, another Dcu project that is coming up fast is the second season of Peacemaker. The John Cena-led series, which is a spinoff of The Suicide Squad and one of the only projects to have straddled the Dceu and Dcu, is set to premiere Season 2 in August, and there are many fans wondering how the transition will impact the series.
While discussing her upcoming role in A Minecraft Movie with ScreenRant, Peacemaker returnee Danielle Brooks, who plays Leota Adebayo, explained how things are different this time around as part of the Dcu. She said:
“You know, when we first did Season 1 of Peacemaker, it was during the pandemic, so we didn’t even do press for it. We didn’t have a premiere. The fans took to it, and they loved it. And now, James is taking over the DC Universe,...

“The Residence” is about a complicated and twist-heavy murder mystery, but it’s the detective at the center of the investigation who steals the Netflix show.
Cordelia Cupp, a consulting detective for the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department comes into the White House to investigate the murder of its chief usher. Comedy standouts like Jason Lee and Ken Marino, and TV character actors like Susan Kelechi Watson and Giancarlo Esposito also impress in various roles as the staffers and guests at a state dinner for Australia, where Kylie Minogue and (kinda) Hugh Jackman were in attendance.
But Uzo Aduba’s Cordelia captures everyone’s attention the second we first see her taking a moment to do some birding in the South Lawn of the White House before diving into her latest mystery — as the men upstairs, all leading various security organizations of the government, muse about her being the “best detective in the world.

Is there room for two shows about murders inside a building at the Emmys? Netflix's The Residence stars Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, the world's greatest detective who's called to solve a murder at the White House. The murder mystery premiered on Thursday with all eight episodes and is entering in comedy at the Emmys. So which categories does it stand the best shot at cracking?

When Jennifer Euston was casting Orange Is the New Black, it stands to reason that she was selecting interesting performers first and, given the show’s evocative opening credits, interesting faces second. But somewhere on the opening page of criteria, there must have been a listing that read: “Must also be capable of fronting a Columbo-esque mystery procedural.”
In the case of Kate Mulgrew, she’d already starred in the iconic spinoff series, Mrs. Columbo.
Natasha Lyonne is weeks away from the return of her Emmy-nominated turn as human lie detector Charlie Cale in Peacock’s Poker Face.
New to the murder-solving fray is Uzo Aduba, exceptionally eccentric in Netflix’s new Shondaland-produced The Residence. The show is the latest entry in both the burgeoning Orange Is the New Forensic Investigation genre and the even more burgeoning The World’s Greatest Detective Is a Weirdo genre.

Netflix is adding over a dozen new titles to its inventory this week. From new seasons of current hits to topnotch sleeper movies, you can find something for everyone this week on your favorite streaming service.
No, there isn't anything coming this week that's likely to have the same impact as the number one show, Adolescence. By the way, it's every bit as good as the critics say it is. Okay, maybe one show will. But it really isn't likely that anything debuting this week will knock The Electric State out of its top spot among movies. I believe the critics are just as wrong about the sci-fi movie as they are right about the top-ranked drama.
But that's a discussion - or diatribe - for another time. For now, let's delve into the various worlds of zombies, hip-hop, reality shows, and comedy coming up this week. No, that's not all one show,...

The crime drama “Dope Thief” opens with a headfake. Two DEA agents, Ray (Brian Tyree Henry) and Manny (Wagner Moura), plan and execute a bust on a Philadelphia row house. The sequence, directed by executive producer Ridley Scott, is a proper nail-biter; Ray and Manny nearly shoot a suspect they hear walking around upstairs, realizing just in time that he’s a child. Only after they’ve returned to their van do we realize the two friends aren’t federal agents at all, but petty thieves pretending to be so they can stick up minor dealers for cash.
Adapted from Dennis Tafoya’s novel of the same name, “Dope Thief” is most engaging in such sequences, which maintain the tension even after Scott passes the baton to other directors. (Marcela Said of “Narcos: Mexico” and Jonathan van Tulleken of “Shōgun” each helm multiple hours apiece.) After Ray and Manny choose...

And now, she can just read a grocery list, and you’d still find it hilarious. But despite her TV success, her big-screen appearances have been fewer than expected.

Ever wondered why such a talent like Julie Bowen hasn’t starred in a gazillion movies despite hits like Happy Gilmore and Horrible Bosses? Well, turns out, Hollywood wasn’t exactly throwing heaps of cash at her, like her fellow colleagues and other A-listers. Not to mention the lack of exciting roles for women in the industry, as bluntly put by Bowen.

Descriptions of the Apple TV+ series “Dope Thief” as a “drug ring drama” are not exactly accurate. Yes, it revolves around small-time crooks and friends Ray and Manny posing as DEA agents to rob equally small-time drug dealers. But it’s Manny and Ray’s relationship that matters most, especially when a simple job turns deadly, and an anonymous drug kingpin determined to recoup his loss puts a bounty on their heads. Becoming targets for the DEA doesn’t help either.

Exclusive: Netflix’s The Residence, which was originally announced as a drama and feels like a limited series with its season-long murder mystery format, will be submitted as a comedy for awards consideration, starting with the upcoming Emmys.
The move is not entirely surprising as the Shondaland-produced whodunit, starring Uzo Aduba and Randall Park, has a strong comedic bent in the vein of Hulu’s Only Murders In the Building. Actually, in what is likely a first, we have three murder mysteries among the strong Emmy series contenders in the comedy categories this year, returning nominees Only Murders In the Building and Peacock’s anthology Poker Face, joined by The Residence. All three have a female single lead or co-lead.
Of the three, only Only Murders is in the traditional half-hour-ish format, while Poker Face and The Residence are in the 46-60 minute episode range commonly associated with drama series,...

Netflix viewers are urging science fiction fans to watch one of the streamer’s most underrated shows. The series, which boasts a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, is titled Pantheon, and tackles issues such as death, the overreach of technology, and what it means to be human. The animated series has tragically flown under the radar since it began back in 2022, but now, fans of the sci-fi drama are pushing to raise the profile of Pantheon, taking to social media to persuade streamers to add the series to their lists.
X/Twitter user @JasonKPargin started the push, saying, “Go watch Pantheon, the best show on streaming that nobody knows about.” Fellow user and fan @Jimbo_Zen was glad to see the show getting some attention, adding, “Yes! Glad some people are beginning to become aware of this show.”

It's taken a while, but it feels like we're hitting peak "Star Trek: Voyager" nostalgia these days. It was not always like this: On the heels of "The Next Generation" movies and the sprawling war saga of "Deep Space Nine," the premise of "Voyager," which hurled a Federation ship to the other side of the universe where it presumably would encounter nothing familiar, wasn't as compelling. Initial new aliens like the Kazon were duds, and when the show tried to course-correct, it may have overdone it on the Borg storylines. For the first time, but not the last, it began to feel like there was too much "Star Trek."
However, fans have been going back to "Voyager" and discovering it more old-school charms since the streaming era kicked in -- and especially during the pandemic lockdown. The animated "Star Trek: Prodigy" serves as a sequel of sorts, bringing back multiple...

Netflix's decision to raise their prices is coming back to haunt them as they seemingly took a hit on Wall Street recently. Netflix ushered in a new era of entertainment when it pioneered the concept of streaming. Its initial batch of original series like House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and Daredevil put it on the map and changed the media landscape forever, with every studio following suit and beginning a streaming war with new platforms popping up. Despite Netflix spending billions of dollars each year on productions, they are supported by their large subscriber bases and have essentially set the terms for the streaming war. However, the stock market might hint at Netflix losing some control as subscribers are not happy with some of its recent decisions.
According to The Wrap, Netflix stock was down 4.5% a few hours into Wall Street opening up. This was just...

"Wait, we never win," said a shocked Selena Gomez upon accepting the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Comedy Ensemble for Only Murders in the Building last month. Before the ceremony, the Hulu mystery series had never prevailed at the awards, but this year it achieved two upsets for its fourth season. In addition to the ensemble award, Martin Short won individual acting kudos despite ranking last in Gold Derby's odds. The question now is whether the show can carry that momentum all the way to the upcoming Emmys and win its first Best Comedy Series prize.
Let's look to the past. How often has the SAG Award winner for Best Comedy Ensemble followed that with the Emmy for Best Comedy Series? Here's the complete history, with the double winners highlighted in bold.
1995: Seinfeld won SAG Award; Frasier won Emmy

After its Season 2 renewal in February 2023, Rian Johnson’s and Natasha Lyonne’s Poker Face, the case-of-the-week mystery series, will be back for more sleuthing this year.

Johnson, who also has Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery in the works with a stacked cast, describes the show as a “howcatchem” versus a “whodunit” which is the format of the Knives Out and Glass Onion films.

The first writers’ room I ever worked in was considered freakishly small at the time. There were seven writers, a writers’ assistant, a script coordinator, a writers’ Pa, and a phalanx of personal assistants, which was the category I fell into.
Zipped into my bright floral Topshop shift dresses and vibrating with Trader Joe’s Powerberries, I leapt at any opportunity to sub for the writers’ assistant as note taker. Behind the writers’ room iMac, I tried and failed not to laugh too hard at everyone’s jokes, awed by how plot was broken and shaped in between zingy bouts of one-upmanship.
Every morning as I walked past a twee little set of Pluto’s paw prints on my way to work, I had a sense of confirmation that felt borderline delirious. My feet were on the path, so all I needed to do now was work hard for a while,...

Kevin Bacon has been plugging away in movies since making his big-screen debut in 1978's highly problematic comedy classic "National Lampoon's Animal House," and has been in so many different kinds of films over the last 47 years that there's a trivia game, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, that essentially holds him as the center of the cinema universe. While you can't make as many movies as Bacon has without appearing in more than a few stinkers, I don't think I've ever seen the man give a poor performance. He's been believable as heroes, villains, creeps and milquetoasts, and, despite getting cast in numerous Oscar contenders, has never competed for an Academy Award himself. That's gotta change.
The only bad thing I can say about his most recent project, "The Bondsman," is that it won't get him off the Oscar schneid. That's because it's a streaming horror series for Amazon Prime...

In 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery launched its “Diversity Digest,” a quarterly update on the company’s Dei efforts. The first installment highlighted Latino representation in “Blue Beetle” and home renovation show “Rico to the Rescue.”
But after regular updates in 2024, the digest went silent after the election of President Trump. Last week, the feature was dropped from the company’s Dei page, along with Wbd’s commitments to equity and diversity outreach, as the company narrowed its focus to “inclusion.” The move came as Trump has sought to stamp out Dei programs at the federal level and threatened civil and criminal investigations of private companies. Last month, the Federal Communications Commission opened an investigation of Comcast, the parent of NBCUniversal — and MSNBC — for possibly pursuing “invidious forms of discrimination” under the banner of Dei.
“Bullying is causing a lot of companies to reassess,” says Vernā Myers, former head of inclusion at Netflix.

Alright, stop us if you’ve heard this one: a nerdy comic book store owner, a quirky geologist, a snarky Caltech antagonist, and a sweet assistant manager walk into a spin-off. No, no…it’s not a bad joke—it’s the lineup for Chuck Lorre’s forthcoming The Big Bang Theory spinoff, and we’re already feeling the excitement build up like a chemistry experiment gone right.
Well, we’re sure the idea of the return of those characters— the ones that made us roll our eyes, laugh hysterically, and sometimes cringe— is enough to make any fan of the original show do a double-take.

While Netflix had quickly established itself as the dominant name in the digital streaming business, the release of the first season of House of Cards in 2013 made it clear that the popular streamer also had the potential to be a major contender as a production studio. In the following years, Netflix has continued to produce stand-out series like Orange is the New Black and BoJack Horseman, while also reviving audience favorites like Arrested Development and Full House.

TV shows tend to be nothing without their characters. They range from good, bad, and everything in between. A character’s choices usually drive the narrative, or at least provide some material for other characters to make fun of.
It’s not just other characters that poke fun at people on screen, as the audience gets free rein in deciding whether a character is worth liking or hating. The audience can love a character so much that spinoffs get created for them, or their actor receives more acclaim. But, a great show often features a character the audience simply can’t stand. Whether they’re a serial killer or just plain annoying, there are plenty of characters that are so insufferable, they can make a fan hesitate to watch a beloved show again.

It's nearly March, and with the days getting longer, that means spring is in the air, and there are plenty of new movies and shows to binge-watch from the comfort of your living room. Netflix has an impressive list of titles arriving on the service in March, including The Electric State, a big-budget sci-fi adventure film directed by The Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame) and starring Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) and Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy). Shonda Rhimes (Bridgerton) returns with another exciting new series, The Residence, starring Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black) as a skilled detective who must solve a murder in the White House. After the success of Everybody's in LA last May, John Mulaney is bringing back the format with the new weekly live show, Everybody's Live with John Mulaney.
