Even though she's no stranger to Netflix, having starred in the streamer's original movies Outlaw King, Malevolent, and The Wonder, Academy Award-nominated actress Florence Pugh's biggest Netflix role is still to come. The talented star will lead the cast of Netflix's upcoming limited series East of Eden, based on the novel of the same name by John Steinbeck.

Pugh first became attached to star when word of the project was revealed by Deadline back in June 2022, but Netflix officially gave the limited series the green light in September 2024. Mister Smith Entertainment has closed multiple international sales for the adventure comedy Bookworm, starring Elijah Wood and Nell Fisher.

The feature, from Come to Daddy director Ant Timpson follows 11-year-old Mildred (Fisher) whose life takes a wild turn when her estranged father, a washed-up Las Vegas illusionist Strawn Wise (Wood) suddenly reappears. Strawn is left to care for Mildred while her mom is hospitalized and the pair set off on a trip to find the mythological Canterbury Panther.

Mister Smith closed deals on the film for Photon Films in Canada; Metropolitan in France; Plaion Pictures in Germany, Italy and Switzerland; and La Aventura in Spain, among other territories. We spoke with Doctor Jekyll director Joe Stephenson leading up to the release of his new British horror film that is reigniting the famed Hammer Films brand. Since 1934, the studio which wasn't initially involved in Stephenson's film but would later lend its hand has produced acclaimed projects that feature the iconic characters of Frankenstein, Dracula, and more. And now, Stephenson has helmed a modern reimagining of the famed 1886 novella about two other fictional icons: Jekyll & Hyde.

"I was always using references of British horror of the past and always structuring it as a slow-burn kind of energy heading towards a chaotic climax," Stephenson told MovieWeb about the development process. "That kind of was a bit of like, really what they did in the '60s and '70s. A lot of those films have that slow-burn beginning, just people wandering around saying that things look spooky, and then chaos.

Exclusive: Signature Entertainment has picked up UK and Irish rights to Bookworm, the latest film from Kiwi filmmaker Ant Timpson (Come to Daddy) starring Elijah Wood.

Described as an “adventure comedy”, the film is produced by Emma Slade (Come to Daddy), Roxi Bull (Uproar), and Victoria Dabbs (Malevolent) of Firefly Films New Zealand and Mette-Marie Kongsved (I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore), Laura Tunstall (Nine Days) of Nowhere.

Timpson directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Toby Harvard (The Greasy Strangler). “Always be two steps ahead,” repeatedly says Rachel Hyde, the famous alter ego of the namesake character in Hammer Studios’ “Doctor Jekyll.” The film’s director, Joe Stephenson, and his screenwriter Dan Kelly-Mulhern don’t take her advice, and it’s much to the detriment of their contemporary adaptation of the 1886 Robert Louis Stevenson novella, which can’t decide singularly what Jekyll’s transformation is a metaphor for. All volunteered options are either obvious or severely undercooked. Though Stephenson offers plenty of suitably spooky imagery, and importantly finds a more-than-game collaborator in Izzard as both the good and evil doctor, “Doctor Jekyll” is meandering and empty, an update with neither enough loyalty to its source material or imagination to make its departures meaningful.

Director Olaf de Fleur Johannesson’s Malevolent is the first offering in what Netflix is referring to as its month of “Netflix & Chills.” October is one of the few months on the calendar that routinely gets its own theme, so strong is the siren call of Halloween and all the horror and spookiness it represents. Don’t even come at me with December the “holiday season.” Snow and general goodwill do not a holiday month make.

The desire to be scared is so strong that entertainment corporations are increasingly developing their whole October content calendar around it. Thank goodness they are, because while fear is something that the dopamine receptors in our brain craver, it is so, so, so, so hard for anything to satisfactorily fill that need.

"Angela, it's just a house..." Netflix has debuted the first trailer for an indie horror titled Malevolent, a new horror film by Icelandic filmmaker Olaf de Fleur Johannesson. The chilling thriller film is about a pair of fake paranormal investigators who suffer the ultimate reality check when confronted by the horrors that lie hidden within a haunted orphanage. But supernatural terrors are the least of their problems when they discover the very real evil lurking in the isolated house. Starring Florence Pugh and Ben Lloyd-Hughes, along with Celia Imrie, Scott Chambers, and Georgina Bevan. This starts out pretty mellow, but get intense fast and looks very freaky once they get into the house. The sound in this trailer is really unsettling as well. Netflix has released the first trailer for MaleVolent. This looks like one of the many movies that the streaming service has been developing that has sort of caught us off guard. Not only does this look like it could be a potentially fun way to kick off a month celebrated by horror lovers, but the movie arrives on Netflix in just a few days on October 5. Will this be a welcome early Halloween surprise for genre fans? Or is it merely a run of the mill horror flick that is getting dumped to a streaming service? Hard to say just yet, but the trailer packs quite the bloody punch.

Even taking some of the initially brutal imagery out of the equation, like a man getting his head absolutely caved in with a shovel, the whole wonky-sounding self-help tape that is playing in the background is unsettling all on its own.

Netflix has shared the new trailer for Malevolent, which will be making its premiere on the streaming service on October 5th. Directed by Olaf de Fleur Johannesson, the movie finds a brother and sister team of con artists over their heads when they're invited to an orphanage that's actually haunted:

"Brother and sister team Angela (Florence Pugh) and Jackson (Ben Lloyd-Hughes) are nothing more than scam artists. Preying on the grief stricken and the vulnerable, they convince the bereaved that Angela has the ability to contact the dead. It's a simple con, until Mrs. Green (Celia Imrie) summons the pair to her home -- the orphanage that was once stage to a string of murders of young girls -- and Angela grows less and less certain of what's actually real. Probably the biggest horror franchise in the world right now is “The Conjuring.” After two main films, with three spin-offs, the stories of married ghost hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren have become incredibly popular among moviegoers. Based on a “true story,” many people either think the Warrens are the real deal or the world’s biggest con artists. However, that doesn’t stop people from buying tickets. In the new film “Malevolent,” Netflix takes a cue from “The Conjuring,” but asks the audience — what happens if the ghost hunters are fake, but the haunting is real?

It’s hard to believe that another South by Southwest Film Festival is almost upon us, and this year’s lineup is yet another stellar collection of indie films, shorts, documentaries and experiential projects from all over the world. As we prepare to bring our readers extensive coverage over the next week from Austin, here’s a look at the 11 genre-related films and TV shows we’re excited to check out during the festival, which begins on Friday, March 11th.

Simply put, the SXSW Film, Music and Interactive Festival is one of the biggest, most prestigious events in the media calendar. Taking place annually in Austin, Texas, it is beloved by film fans and filmmakers from all over the world, and has reached such heights by building a reputation for showcasing excellent content. This results in a high level of competition, with the Narrative Feature category alone having received 1442 submissions this year, and the documentary feature category having received 1,013.

The 2016 event looks to be particularly exciting, with many world premieres and feature debuts already announced. The Narrative Feature category will include Julia Hart’s Miss Stevens, Debra Eisenstadt’s Before The Sun Explodes, Joey Klein’s The Other Half, and Musa Syeed’s A Stray, among others, while the Headliner category will feature Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some.

Exclusive: Front Row strikes Cannes deals with HanWay, Protagonist, Embankment.

Middle East distributor Front Row Filmed Entertainment has finalised a raft of Cannes deals with Embankment, HanWay, Protagonist, Cmg, Visit Films and Fox International Productions.

As announced during Cannes, Front Row also picked up Jacques Audiard’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner Dheepan from Celluloid Dreams.

Front Row continued a long-standing relationship by securing deals across Protagonist’s slate including Pete Travis’ Middle East-set action-drama Snatchback, which is set to star and be produced by Rachel Weisz, heavy-metal drama Lords of Chaos and Taika Waititi’s comedy Hunt For The Wilderpeople.

Edge of Tomorrow and Into the Woods star Emily Blunt is attached to play the lead role in bull-riding drama Bronco Belle from first-time writer-director Khurram Longhi.

Blunt is set to star as Raylene Jackson, a stubborn but vulnerable and determined American woman with a chip on her shoulder who dreams of becoming a champion bull-rider.

Supported by an old-time trainer out to redeem himself and a hustler promoter, Jackson battles through heartbreak, prejudice, broken dreams and bones to get reach the top of the sport.

The Hollers producer Allyson Seegar will produce alongside Adulthood and Kidulthood producer George Isaac.

Embankment Films will launch the project among buyers in advance of the Cannes market, with the team aiming to shoot in autumn 2015. CAA handles domestic rights.

The actress will play Angela, who along with her brother Jackson runs a fake, profitable ghostbusting business.

When the siblings are hired to investigate an old home, they realise there's nothing fake about the supernatural. They discover that in the past, girls that lived in the old home were brutally silenced by a sadistic killer as more terrors lurk in the house.

Brave Men's Blood's Olaf de Fleur will be directing, with Brian Coffey and Danny Sherman set to produce.

Cookson can next be seen starring alongside Adrien Brody in Lee Tamahori's historical film Emperor.
