In April 2016, MGM won an auction for a Max Landis-penned underwater horror script, “Deeper,” with Bradley Cooper and “White God” director Kornel Mundruczo attached. When the timing didn’t work for the talent, MGM pressed forward on the project, hiring Baltasar Kormakur (“Everest”) last fall; in February, Idris Elba was reportedly in talks to star. Today, Landis is the subject of a searing expose by Amy Zimmerman in The Daily Beast — and, according to sources who requested anonymity, “Deeper” has fallen apart.
Of course, movies come together or don’t all the time, for reasons large and small. However, this may be the first indication that Landis’ counterintuitive, decade-long career path — one that included making critically reviled films while enjoying a long-term reputation as an unabashed emotional and sexual abuser of women — is no longer one that will scale.
Landis first garnered attention as the screenwriter of Josh Trank’s 2012 everyman-superhero film “Chronicle.

Max Landis, the screenwriter of “Chronicle” and “Bright” and the son of filmmaker John Landis, was accused of sexual assault, abuse and and on-set harassment by multiple women in a Daily Beast article published on Tuesday.
A woman identified as Julie said Landis repeatedly raped her during their two-year personal relationship. Three of Landis’s ex-girlfriends — Ani Baker, Dani Manning, and a woman identified by the pseudonym Kerry — said Landis had physically and emotionally abused them, including choking them. And a woman identified as Veronica said Landis touched her in an unwanted sexual manner repeatedly during an overnight trip to Disneyland. Another woman said she witnessed Landis raping her disoriented friend.
Representatives for Landis did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment. He also did not respond to the Daily Beast.

When it comes to actor Alia Shawkat's sexuality, the past few years have been a revelation. Perhaps not in private; when we spoke on the phone in early June, she told me she's been aware of her own queerness for a long time. "I had always found myself attracted to women, but didn't know how to really make a move, for lack of a better word," she told me with a laugh. But her identity as a bisexual woman has only recently become a part of her career and public persona.
Despite dozens upon dozens of acting credits that stretch nearly 20 years, the queer aspect of Shawkat's art is relatively new. She's best known for playing Maeby Fünke in Arrested Development, Lila on Transparent, and Dory Sief on TBS's critical darling Search Party. Hollywood is about to remake another classic, but this time they are keeping it in the family. According to a new report, prolific screenwriter Max Landis is set to write and direct a remake of the classic horror/comedy An American Werewolf In London. His father John Landis wrote and directed the original and this time, he will serve as an executive producer.
The news comes courtesy of Deadline who claim that The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman is also set to produce the movie through his Skybound Entertainment production company for Universal. Max Landis did indirectly address the report on Twitter shortly after the news broke, saying that he couldn't add any further details on the project, but also that the story had "multiple factual errors" in it. It isn't clear if he was talking about this Deadline report for sure, but here is what he had to say.

In news that’s sure to be well received by all and not the least bit controversial, Max Landis is set to write and direct the remake of “An American Werewolf in London” — a film originally made by his father John. That classic tale of lycanthropy came out a full 35 years ago, four years before young Max was even born.

Is infamous writer/director Max Landis about to remake one of his dad's all-time classics? That's what the prodigal son is teasing on Twitter. John Landis wrote and directed An American Werewolf in London way back in 1981, and it succeeded as one of the first horror comedies of that era. Now, it sounds like the movie might get resurrected. But it will be staying in the family.
An American Werewolf in London is considered one of the best werewolf movies of all-time, and even won Rick Baker a Best Make-Up Oscar. It should come as no surprise that in our current cinematic state of affairs that someone would eventually set out to remake or reboot the franchise. What makes this one a bit more interesting than the typical remake is that the script is coming from the original director's son.
Max Landis has a pretty solid resume, delivering the screenplay for the critically praised Chronicle.

Noted professional-wrestling fan, screenwriter and director Max Landis is at Comic-Con, where he’s revealed one of many new projects he’s working on: a Pepé Le Pew movie being developed by Warner Bros. The animated film will follow the lecherous skunk of “Looney Tunes” fame, whom conventional wisdom would suggest is among the cartoon characters least suited to a feature-length revival in 2016. That’s probably part of Landis’ angle.

Earlier tonight, screenwriter Max Landis made his Comic-Con debut to promote his upcoming series Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, which will debut on BBC America on October 22. This will be Max Landis' first foray into television, after making a name for himself as the writer of movies such as Chronicle, American Ultra, and many more, but, during the panel, he revealed a very unique movie project that he's working on for Warner Bros. The writer revealed during his Comic-Con panel that he's also writing an animated movie based on the beloved character Pepe Le Pew.
Very little is known about the project, but Deadline reports that Warner Bros. enjoyed Max Landis' pitch on the material. It isn't known if any producers are attached to the project, or if the studio has a director in mind to tackle this project. If this does move forward into production, it...

Denis Villeneuve‘s massively intriguing, potentially disastrous Blade Runner sequel has further upped its credibility: according to Variety, the project’s added Robin Wright in a “key role” about which, of course, nothing is currently known. The Hampton Fancher-penned, Roger Deakins-photographed picture will be set decades after Ridley Scott‘s original, bringing aboard Ryan Gosling in the lead role and featuring the return of Harrison Ford‘s Rick Deckard. The rest will be revealed on January 12, 2018 — or when details start leaking from the set this July.
It’s almost a matter of time before any actor as ubiquitous as Jonah Hill gets into the directing business, so take it as a little surprise when Variety tells us he’s expected to helm his own screenplay, Mid ’90s, which reportedly concerns “a young boy coming up in Los Angeles in the mid-1990s learning life lessons with his skateboarding crew of friends.

Max Landis (Chronicle, Victor Frankenstein, American Ultra) recently sold his script for the Will Smith/Joel Edgerton starrer Bright to Netflix for a reported $3 million, and it sounds like he already has another project heating up in Hollywood. The Wrap reports that Bradley Cooper is attached to star and White God director Kornel Mundruczo is lined up to direct Deeper, a new thriller that multiple studios are currently bidding on.
“Deeper” is a drama about a disgraced astronaut who embarks on a mission to reach the bottom of a newly-discovered oceanic trench, which some speculate may be the lowest point on Earth. Facing great danger, he quickly finds himself in a physical and psychological fight against mysterious forces.

You have to give Max Landis credit for trying to breathe fresh air into Hollywood tropes through his genre-merging scripts, whether you believe they’re effective or not. Chronicle‘s sci-fi, found-footage, horror thriller combo was well-received, while American Ultra‘s stoner Bourne Identity meets Mr. & Mrs. Smith was mostly reviled, although the latter’s reaction may have hinged upon people’s inability to remove his Twitter-celebrity-the-world-loves-to-hate-on from the work. His latest foray in the millennial screenwriting annals is a play on the romantic comedy that’s as much a Hollywood insider satire as it is a genre embellishment turning the homosexual as outsider trope upside down. And this time no one can blame or praise the director’s interpretation of his words. Yes, Max Landis is now Director Max Landis.

Hauling visibility and insight into the often invisible practice of screenwriting, “Chronicle” and “American Ultra” scripter Max Landis is also content to let the public decide how his many opinions and work affect one another. He's a writer director/director who reliably has an inventive screenplay idea for any online argument he might inspire. This is why his “Chronicle” sequel script “Martyr” remains in the conversation alongside his thoughts on the theatrical reception of “American Ultra,” why his current run of Superman comic books “American Alien” is garnering praise, and why his opinions on Rey in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” all stirs up so much more debate. "Welcome to Los Angeles." Get ready for something wild and wacky. The first trailer has debuted for Max Landis' feature directorial debut, Me Him Her, which was filmed around Los Angeles in 2013. The full cast includes Emily Meade, Alia Shawkat, Angela Sarafyan, Casey Wilson, Geena Davis, Scott Bakula, Haley Joel Osment, Kyle Bornheimer, Jake McDorman, Lance Henriksen. There's some strange and totally weird stuff going on in this trailer, it seems that it's the kind of film that just needs to be seen to be fully understood. For a brief moment there, it looked very much as though the Will Smith blockbuster train was grinding to an unfortunate, disappointing halt. The actor’s career took a giant hit with the critical failure of After Earth, and was only partially redeemed by Focus and Concussion. Already boasting the acting skills of Lois Smith and recently Emmy winner (finally!) Jon Hamm, play adaptation Marjorie Prime is adding another great performer. Geena Davis will join the pair in the sci-fi story.Hamlet and Cymbeline director Michael Almereyda is in the director’s chair for this one, overseeing the adaptation of Jordan Harrison’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated stage work that featured Smith in the lead role. She’s back here to play Marjorie, an 85-year-old violinist with concerns that her memory is failing her. She invests in a service that allows people to see holographic recreations of deceased loved ones as we’d want them to be remembered, which means she interacts with a younger version of her late husband, Walter (Hamm), who is not exactly how she recalls him. She also spends time with her (living) daughter Tess (Davis) and son-in-law Jon. Almereyda will start the cameras rolling in the Hamptons next month.

With my first Siff now in the books, I can say that I’ve learned some valuable lessons. The first being what a remarkable festival and diverse program the organizers came up with for the 41st edition. From the venues to the volunteers, everything was top notch. Like most festivals, it was a bit front-loaded with premieres, but there were also notable premieres later in the program, including Max Landis’ Me Him Her on the closing weekend. From top to bottom, this was a great line-up with very few thin spots.
The other major lesson I learned is that it’s impossible to adequately cover a film festival in the city in which you live. Family, friends, and full-time jobs don’t simply disappear just because you want to have some fun. I come away feeling disappointed that time constraints kept me from seeing a lot of great films, as...

Last week Max Landis’ directorial debut Me Him Her premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival. Shortly before heading to Seattle, I sat down with the very busy screenwriter for an extended video interview. During the wide-ranging conversation, Landis and I talked about so many things it would be impossible to summarize it in an intro. Suffice it to say, if you’re curious about what it really takes to make a movie, this interview is definitely worth your time as he reveals a lot of the real inner workings of Hollywood. If you’re not familiar with Max Landis, he’s written a number of projects over the past few years (like Chronicle) and he’s got a lot getting released soon like American Ultra, Victor Frankenstein, and Mr. Right. The migration of filmmakers from the big screen to the small one is not a new phenomenon, but another team was formally inducted this weekend, with the Wachowskis’ Netflix series Sense8 making its debut. The duo join the ranks of others such as Steven Soderbergh, and they are far from the last ones, as Steve McQueen, Baz Luhrmann, and Amy Seimetz are among those who are poised to make the creative leap as well. There are some filmmakers, however, who have displayed a set of talents that make the idea of them moving to television an exciting one. Here are ten filmmakers who would be a great fit on the small screen in charge of a tv show.
1) Alex Garland
With a writing filmography that includes 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Never Let Me Go, and Dredd, Alex Garland has proven that, no matter the genre, he is capable of telling a compelling story.

World premiering this weekend at the Seattle International Film Festival is Max Landis’ directorial debut Me Him Her. The sexual identity comedy is about three millennials trying to figure out love, friendship, sex, and life in present day Hollywood. The film stars Dustin Milligan, Luke Bracey, Emily Meade, Alia Shawkat, Rebecca Drysdale, and Haley Joel Osment. The other day I sat down with Max Landis for an extended video interview. While I already posted his edition of “Save or Kill”, tomorrow I’ll have him talking about making Me Him Her and how he put together the great cast. Until then, we’re happy to premiere the first clip, which is a sequence that takes place at the beginning of the film between Milligan and Bracey. Here’s the Me Him Her clip followed by where you can see the film this weekend, some filmmaker info, and the official synopsis:...

With Max Landis’ directorial debut Me Him Her world premiering this Friday night at the Seattle International Film Festival, I recently had the opportunity to sit down with the busy screenwriter for an extended video interview. If you’re not familiar with Me Him Her, the dramedy is about three millennials trying to figure out love, friendship, sex, identity, and life in present day Hollywood. The film stars Dustin Milligan, Luke Bracey, Emily Meade, Alia Shawkat, Rebecca Drysdale, and Haley Joel Osment. Over the next few days I’ll be posting a few different parts from my extended interview with Landis, but today I’ve got him playing “Save or Kill”. If you haven’t seen it yet, the game reveals which franchises, characters or bands someone would choose when pitted against another of equal value. Han Solo or Indiana Jones – If you were told you could only save one...

When it comes to international film festivals, there are sprinters and there are distance runners. Spanning 25 days across May and June, Seattle International Film Festival is the Pheidippides of American fests. Unlike its splashier cousins, Sundance and SXSW, Siff doesn’t pander to big movie stars or flashy hipsters. Staying true to its Northwest sensibilities, Siff quietly grinds out one terrific program after another. The 41st edition boasts a whopping 193 feature films, 164 short films, and 70 documentaries, many of which are either World or North American premieres. It’s enough to make even the most ambitious cinephile curl up in a corner with his festival guide and cry. Here, then, is a brief preview of some hotly anticipated films, as well as some obscure titles that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Despite the lottery-esque sounding odds, the U.S Dramatic Competition section which produces the finest American indie specimens such as Frozen River, Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station and Whiplash is fairly consistent in terms of quality. Last year’s crop of sixteen have almost all had their theatrical releases with Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter being the last one out of the gates (pegged with an early 2015 release). Last week we individually looked at our top 80 Sundance Film Fest Predictions (you’ll find 30 other titles worth considering in our intro) and below, we’ve split the list into narrative and non-fiction film items and have both identified and color-coded our picks in an AtoZ cheat sheet. You’ll find 2015′s answer to Whiplash located somewhere in the stack below. Click on the individual titles below, for the film’s profile.

For someone who was ultra transparent during production, it’s almost as if Max Landis has placed a self-imposed gag order or the more likely scenario, simply didn’t really need to rush his directing debut in post production when we consider his sizeable workload. Backed by Big Beach Films – the prod co. with a winning formula and streak of Sundance comedies such as Little Miss Sunshine and Safety Not Guaranteed, 2015 should be a banner year for Landis name in the film stratosphere as it’ll include a whopping trio of penned items in Paul McGuigan’s Frankenstein, Nima Nourizadeh’s American Ultra, Paco Cabezas’ Mr. Right and finally, the sexual identity non-labeller comedy Me Him Her (we had on the radar last year) that sounds like a cozy fit for Park City. Worth noting, this features the work of cinematographer Ross Riege (The Kings of Summer).

After more than a decade of working in the short form (this includes the 2010 Sundance hit Tub – see below), Bobby Miller landed the attention getting cast of Johnny Galecki, Anna Friel, Kyle Gallner, Oliver Platt and the splendid Anjelica Huston for his feature film debut. The film world is full of garbage comedy-horror genre items and in short supply of standout items. The Master Cleanse went into production this past July/August — here’s hoping that this is a worthy pilgrimage towards enlightenment and is both unique and stunning in concept and design.

After years upon years of delays, it looks like Sony might be ready to move forward with their long-awaited Ghostbusters sequel, with Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer reportedly circling the project. Screenwriter Etan Cohen revealed earlier this month that he is currently working on the script with producer Ivan Reitman, although a new rumor surfaced earlier this week that Chronicle writer Max Landis was brought on for the latest rewrites. But the writer shot down the report with the following tweets.
Hey guys, it pains me to say this, but you know I pride myself on being straight up person. Zero truth to the Ghostbusters report.
— Max Landis (@Uptomyknees) June 18, 2014
Frankenstein, Me Him Her, American Ultra and Mr. Right come out next year. Working on things at Uni and Sony, and indies. GB3, sadly, no.
— Max Landis (@Uptomyknees) June 18, 2014
However, the writer was asked repeatedly by his Twitter followers what his Ghostbusters pitch would have been.

As is the case with most Ghostbusters 3 rumors (the kind that we’ve kinda, sorta, mostly refused to cover for years now, except when it seems somewhat appropriate), the latest chatter to come flying out of Hollywood right into the Internet’s face has already proven to be false. Last night, Nikki Finke posted a story to her brand new site that reported that Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis was doing a polish on the latest iteration of whatever the hell this movie is now, which Landis immediately debunked via his Twitter. Finke, in fine form, went ahead and deleted the entire post sometime after Landis shot down both her reportage and her two apparent sources. Of course, this is still the Internet, and you can’t really delete anything from the Internet, so here is a cached version of Finke’s story, if you’re into that sort of thing. You...

Late last night, Nikki Finke (formerly of Deadline) reported that Chronicle scribe Max Landis was set to work on a draft of Ghostbusters 3. In her report, she claimed that Landis wouldn’t be penning a new version of the script so much as polishing up an existing one. Unfortunately, tweets from Landis have poured some cold water on that report – though the screenwriter claims that he would love to work on it if given the chance.
So that you can follow this story from the beginning, here’s what Finke wrote:
I’ve just heard that screenwriter Max Landis (Chronicle) is working on a new draft for Ghostbusters 3 with a three-week turnaround. Landis, of course, is the son of director John Landis and costume designer/historian Deborah Nadoolman Landis. “Landis probably is doing more of a ‘polish’ than a Page 1 rewrite,” says one source. “Not huge changes, but could be cool,...

Deadline is reporting that Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect, Up In The Air) and Sam Rockwell (The Way, Way Back, Seven Psychopaths) have signed on to star opposite each other in Mr. Right, a classic case of a hidden identity that’s bound to cause hilarious problems later on.
Under the direction of Tokarev‘s Paco Cabezas and with a script by American Ultra writer Max Landis, the plot for this one is being described as follows:
“Kendrick will play a woman whose bad luck streak at finding lasting love seems to end when she meets Mr. Right. That’s until she discovers he is a reformed hit man. When his dark past catches up, their fledgling relationship is tested as they try to save one another.”
Okay, so maybe Mr. Right sounds a smidgen like an ’80s action comedy that’s been resigned to the $2.99 bin at Walmart. With only...

Max Landis has struck again. The prolific writer's latest script, “Mr. Right,” has attached Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell to star and Paco Cabezas to direct, TheWrap has confirmed. The film, a romantic caper, features Kendrick as a woman who finally thinks she has found the perfect man — only to learn that the titular Mr. Right, played by Rockwell, is a reformed hit man with a past that won't stay buried. Continuing the original film’s tactic of incorporating fresh new voices in cinema, Chronicle 2 has gained a screenwriter in the form of newcomer Jack Stanley, Deadline reports.
Stanley doesn’t have a single produced film to his name, but he gained some credibility recently with two spec scripts. His first, Sweetheart, centered on a female assassin whose attempts to retire are sidelined by her high school reunion, while his second spec script, Silver, is described as a werewolf thriller. Sweetheart made the Black List, and both scripts are in line to be produced at some point down the road.
The original Chronicle, a found-footage flick that drew acclaim for its innovative approach to the superhero genre, was a huge hit for Fox back in 2012, grossing $126 million worldwide on a $12 million budget, as well as a breakout both for director Josh Trank and screenwriter Max Landis.

Uma Thurman is in negotiations to star alongside Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg in the upcoming action-comedy film, American Ultra.
Focusing on a stoner and his girlfriend, the movie tells of how their quiet lives are interrupted when his past crashes into their present, as a Government operation looks set to wipe him out. With Eisenberg and Stewart as the young couple, Thurman will take the role of a Government official, once responsible for a secret program creating ‘sleeper warriors,’ who returns to protect him like a bear with her cub.

Chronicle scribe Max Landis has been ushered in to perform re-writes on Houdini – Sony’s planned cinematic offering, amid a sudden glut of projects about this magical man who has long fascinated filmmakers.
The infamous escapologist and illusionist appeared in several movies himself between 1906 and 1923, and has since been portrayed by many other actors – including Tony Curtis, Wil Wheaton, Harvey Keitel and Guy Pearce. Now, 88 years after his death, the world of entertainment is bracing itself for a veritable cavalcade of Houdini projects – each offering a unique angle on this dedicated showman.
While the History Channel are planning a biopic mini-series that will see Academy Award winner Adrien Brody as Houdini, Dean Parisot – who previously directed Galaxy Quest and Red 2 – is slated to helm an action adventure film featuring Houdini as the central heroic character. That film will shoot from a Noah Oppenheim (The Maze Runner) script for Summit Entertainment.

The latest attempt at an adaptation of Harry Houdini's life and legend will be penned by Max Landis (Chronicle) for Sony Pictures. Originally scripted by Scott Frank nearly three years ago, Houdini previously had Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) in line to direct. There's no mention of a new director for the picture, but Landis' involvement adds some momentum to it. On an interesting note, it sounds as if Landis will color his Houdini interpretation with a bit of an H.P. Lovecraft influence. Hit the jump for more. Deadline reports that Landis will draft up a new take on Houdini for Sony, one with a Lovecraftian influence. While there are no plot details available at this time, there's a little bit of history to lean on as Lovecraft did some ghostwriting for Houdini in the latter years of the illusionist's life. The elusive “Golden Ticket”. Beginning next Wednesday (December 4th) in a wave of four announcements, is when the official word comes out. Plenty of filmmakers are already in the know, but some will find out over the course of this Thanksgiving weekend. Having covered the festival and fest circuit for some time now, we’re already aware that worthy films that were indeed submitted will be excluded from the ’14 edition. Thousands of filmmakers won’t get the phone call, and while it can bruise dreams, this is not a rejection of quality…but rather, a preference from a programmer/programming team which reflects a larger mandate.
