J.J. Abrams is back with the first project he’s co-written in six years. The Star Trek and Star Wars: The Force Awakens director has teamed with fellow writer and executive producer Latoya Morgan for a Max drama series that reunites Abrams with his Lost star Josh Holloway.

Set in 1972, the series follows the first Black female FBI agent (Rachel Hilson) as she heads to the Southwest and recruits a gutsy getaway driver (Holloway) in a bold effort to take down a growing crime syndicate (led by Keith David). But as is often the case with projects that Abrams has worked on, things aren’t quite as straightforward as they might initially seem.

The result is an upbeat and poppy retro crime thriller that warmly showcases its ’70s esthetic and features Hilson as a playfully tough Fed and Holloway being his cockily charismatic self.

Earlier today, Amazon MGM Studios officially announced the start of production on their upcoming untitled Jack Ryan feature film, which will return 4x Primetime Emmy-nominee John Krasinski to the title role, and will serve as a sequel to the acclaimed Prime Video television series.

Andrew Bernstein is helming the feature, with a screenplay from Krasinski and Aaron Rabin. Bernstein previously helmed three episodes in season two of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, while Rabin penned five of the six episodes in the final season. Both also served as executive producers on their respective seasons.

In addition to Krasinski (The Office; A Quiet Place; 13 Hours) as the titular Jack Ryan, returning cast members will include Wendell Pierce (The Wire; Suits; Superman) as James Greer, Michael Kelly (House of Cards; Dawn of the Dead; Secret Invasion) as Mike November, and Betty Gabriel (Get Out; Upgrade; Defending Jacob) as Elizabeth Wright.

James Patterson's iconic Washington D.C. detective and forensic psychologist is back in a big way with Cross. AMC Networks is planning to launch a cheaper, ad-supported tier later this year.

The new tier, which is expected to launch by October, will be pitched at the company’s 2023-2024 upfront, which will include a presentation in New York on Tuesday. Pricing for the tier was not disclosed.

“This is a big moment for AMC Networks and for our advertising partners, because it not only creates a fully-ad supported distribution ecosystem, it also allows advertisers to buy our shows, genres and franchises in a much more comprehensive and impactful way,” AMC Networks chief commercial officer Kim Kelleher said in a statement. “With our new series content, library titles and other targeted streaming platforms that are all bundled into AMC+, partners can move beyond individual shows and even series and choose to ‘own’ whole genres and franchises, and drive messaging to target audiences no matter what they are watching or where.

HBO Max has ordered the eight-episode drama “Duster” to series from J.J. Abrams, Latoya Morgan and Warner Bros. Television, HBO said Thursday.

The series, which is set in 1972, stars Rachel Hilson of “The Good Wife” and “This is Us” as Nina, the first Black female FBI and “Colony” star Josh Holloway as “gutsy getaway driver” Jim, who teams up with her to take down a growing crime syndicate.

The series reteams Holloway, who played James “Sawyer” Ford on “Lost,” with Abrams. Holloway also appeared in the 2011 Abrams-produced film “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” His other series include “Intelligence” and a stint on “Yellowstone” as Roarke Carter.

Aldis Hodge reprises his role as hacker Alec Hardison in Leverage’s revival, Leverage: Redemption, but the Hardison Leverage character left the team early in the season – why? Since Leverage ended and Nate and Sophie retired, Hardison, Parker, and Eliot have been running Leverage International, expanding the team’s mission of fleecing the rich and powerful on a global scale. Sophie then comes out of retirement for Leverage: Redemption after the death of Timothy Hutton's Nate. Parker and Eliot return to the old team with her, but Hardison finds himself indispensable to their international work. Amazon has ordered a series based on James Patterson’s Alex Cross novels, with Aldis Hodge set to play the lead role.

Officially titled “Cross,” the series is described as a thriller, with Cross himself said to be “brilliant, flawed, and full of contradictions. A doting father and family man, Cross is single-minded to the point of obsession when he hunts killers. He is desperate for love, but his wife’s murder has left him too damaged to receive it.”

Variety exclusively reported that “Cross” was in the works in January 2020. Ben Watkins is writing and executive producing the series, and will also serve as showrunner. “When I read the book Count Zero [by Gibson], it felt like a first hit of acid. I never experienced anything like the worlds that Gibson created,” Nolan told convention goers Saturday. “I’ve watched every filmmaker rip off all the ideas, myself included, from his works and no one actually had the guts to go and adapt from the source. For us, it felt like coming full circle.”

Prime Video has released the first trailer for The Peripheral, the long-gestating sci-fi drama from Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s Kilter Films. It’s based on the bestselling novel by William Gibson.

Premiering Oct. 21, 2022., The Peripheral stars Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass) as Flynne Fisher, a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. Detective Frost's death got handled beautifully by the writers, from his death in Rizzoli and Isles Season 5 Episode 1 to Jane seeing a vision of him in Rizzoli and Isles Season 5 Episode 18.

The episodes throughout Season Five left us crying, laughing, and missing Lee Thompson Young's presence on our screens.

You may know Jamie Bell as the good-natured protagonist from Spielberg's "The Adventure of Tintin," the hero of the AMC series "Turn: Washington's Spies," or as the title character in "Billy Elliot." But in the new Apple TV+ mystery series "Shining Girls," Bell swings to the complete other end of the spectrum to play a creepy serial killer harboring a secret: He's seemingly able to exist across time without aging. Today, Netflix has released a new trailer for their upcoming true-crime documentary "The Tinder Swindler." Dating apps can be dangerous places. If you've been on them, you know what people will say and do to get what they want. In the film, which is directed by Felicity Morris, we learn about one such person. This man, whose name is Simon, seduced several women on Tinder, made them fall in love with him and his jet-setting lifestyle, and then swindled them out of millions.

Tyler Perry and Jason Blum are teaming up for the first time. The prolific producers are launching the new feature thriller Help, the first major production between Tyler Perry Studios and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions.

Alan McElroy, known as a writer and producer on Star Trek: Discovery and for penning the Wrong Turn horror films, will write and direct Help.

Plot details are being kept under wraps for Help begins filming next year in Atlanta the Tyler Perry Studios. Tim Palen also produces alongside Perry and Blum under Perry and Palen’s Peachtree and Vine label.

The news was announced during Friday’s virtual BlumFest.

The FX on Hulu series adaptation of “Under the Banner of Heaven” has set its main cast.

Sam Worthington, Denise Gough, Wyatt Russell, Billy Howle, Gil Birmingham, Adelaide Clemens, Rory Culkin, Seth Numrich, Chloe Pirrie, Sandra Seacat, and Christopher Heyerdahl have all joined the drama series alongside previously announced series leads Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

Based on the Jon Krakauer novel of the same name, the series follows a devout detective whose faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder that seems to be connected to an esteemed Utah family’s spiral into Lds fundamentalism and their distrust in the government. Production on the series recently began in Calgary.

AppleTV+ has ordered the series from writer Graham Yost and director Morten Tyldum and is produces by AMC Studios.

It marks a long and interesting road for the books, written and self-published by bookstore employee Howey in 2011. The film rights initially were optioned in 2012 by 20th Century Fox, with Ridley Scott and Steve Zaillian attached. It previously was in development at cable network AMC with Turn and Into The Badlands writer Latoya Morgan set to adapt.
