Exclusive: Outer Banks breakout Chase Stokes is stepping behind the camera for his feature directorial debut with the coming-of-age drama I Told the Sunset About You. The project is based on an original concept by Stokes with Monarch Media’s Steve Barnett, Alan Powell and Vicky Patel producing the film through their company Monarch Media.

The film is described as a contemporary Bonnie and Clyde romantic thriller about a restless local waitress who is stuck in a monotonous routine until she meets Jameson, a quiet drifter passing through on his way to the Pacific coast. Adam Green is best known for directing three of the four films that make up the Hatchet slasher franchise, but many fans feel that his best movie is actually the 2010 survival thriller Frozen. And while we’re anxiously waiting to hear when Hatchet 5 is going to go into production, it was welcome news when it was announced last week that Green is taking a step back into Frozen territory to helm a survival thriller called Ascent. Now, Deadline reports that the film’s cast includes Inanna Sarkis (Marked Men), Gregg Sulkin (Six Triple Eight), Timothy Granaderos (13 Reasons Why), and Paris Berelc (Alexa & Katie).

When the project was first announced, it was under the title The Ascent, but it seems the “The” has been dropped. The first announcement also referred to the film as a shark thriller, providing the following synopsis: A group of friends arrive in Europe for a glamorous but daring destination wedding.

Exclusive: Inanna Sarkis, Gregg Sulkin, Timothy Granaderos and Paris Berelc (Alexa & Katie) are set to star in survival thriller Ascent by Adam Green.

The production, which is set to begin shooting in Malta later this month, follows a group of friends attending a destination wedding in Europe who find themselves stranded on a hot air balloon 3,000 feet above the ground.

“I’m incredibly excited to be returning to the survival thriller genre,” said Green. “Ascent’s story about a recreational activity gone terribly wrong is going to play with people’s real life fears and be a total thrill ride for the audience.”

Adapting a beloved novel for the screen is no small feat. While it might be a good way to ensure ticket sales, it also puts the director, writer, and cast under a microscope, with the fans comparing every scene to a chapter of its source material. Right now, audiences have a short window to head to cinemas and see Nick Cassavetes’ take on Jay Crownover’s 2012 novel, Rule, in Marked Men: Rule + Shaw. In adapting one of the books from the author’s Marked Men series, Cassavetes was careful to pay close attention to the details that made the title such a success, while also adding his own personal touch to the characters and story.

There are few directors with as eclectic of a career as Nick Cassavetes. From The Notebook to God Is A Bullet, the type of movie he makes can span quite a wide range. He switches back and forth between darker stories and sappy romances so you never quite know what you’re going to get with him. His latest film, Marked Men: Rule + Shaw (which I can’t help but constantly call it Marked Men: Hobbs and Shaw) takes the latter approach and puts the book series Marked Men in his sights. The adaptation really wasn’t for me (check out my review Here) but I’m sure there are teen girls who will love the melodrama on display here.

Jay Crownover made a splash with readers of romance novels 12 years ago with “Rule,” a good-girl-tames-bad-boy tale that generated five interlocking follow-ups. Their blanket title “Marked Men” referred to tattoos — a frequent motif in the prolific author’s several subsequent books. Now there’s a screen translation in “Marked Men: Rule + Shaw,” which ostensibly draws on the whole sextet but focuses on its first installment.

Whether this Fathom Events release will itself generate sequels is a question mark left dangling at the end of these 90-odd minutes, which play theaters nationwide Jan. 22 and 23. Crownover’s fans enthuse over her bringing above-average character dimension to the genre’s usual “spicy” content requirements. Yet neither of those qualities really comes across in “The Notebook” director Nick Cassavetes’ feature, a fairly painless diversion — albeit one shallow as a kiddie pool in emotional engagement, while surprisingly short on sexy-time as well as chemistry between...

Review: The theater experience has struggled over the years, with mid-budget comedies and romance films being the biggest victims. The solution to this has been to release the films for a limited time in theaters via a company like Fathom or Icon Events. And it seems to give films that would usually be relegated to streaming, a chance at success in theaters. Marked Men: Rule + Shaw is probably a film that should have just stayed streaming as it’s a sadly hollow experience.

Voltage will launch global sales for the film at the American Film Market in Las Vegas, Nv, which runs Nov. 5-10.

Monsters follows a mother (Balinska) as she fights to lead her two young daughters to safety across 20 miles of unforgiving terrain in a perilous post-apocalyptic world teeming with relentless, zombie-like creatures. Glenise Mullins wrote and directed. The pic is rolling cameras in January.

Voltage Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to the action comedy Under Fire starring Dylan Sprouse and Mason Gooding from Aftermath and will launch worldwide sales at American Film Market (AFM) in Las Vegas next month.

The film follows two undercover agents – DEA agent Abbott (Sprouse) and an FBI agent Griff (Gooding) – posing as rival drug dealers at the Mexico border.

Exclusive: NBC’s Chicago Fire continues to heat up.

Season 12 will see the addition of Michael Bradway (Marked Men) in a recurring role, sources close to production tell Deadline. In his television debut, Bradway will play charming firefighter Jack Damon, making his first appearance in episode 10, I hear. He could potentially become a series regular next season.

Bradway’s casting comes as One Chicago continues to mix things up with actors exiting and new ones coming aboard. On Friday, we revealed exclusively the addition of Jocelyn Hudon, who has secured a role as a new paramedic. The new hires follow the departures of Alberto Rosende and Kara Killmer, who were with the firefighter procedural for multiple seasons, and Rome Flynn, following six episodes.

NBC recently renewed all three One Chicago series — Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. — for the 2024-25 season. Med was renewed for Season 10, Fire for Season 13 and P.
