The Overlook Film Festival returns to “America’s most haunted city” from April 3 to 6. A cat on its ninth life, the annual event in New Orleans was founded almost a decade ago to celebrate scary movies and immersive horror experiences. This year, the festival lineup emphasizes tradition — honoring Shudder’s 10th birthday at its opening night party, programming a retro series with “Ash” director Flying Lotus, offering a conversation with genre literary legend Joe Hill, and more.
“I feel like we are standing at the crossroads of horror history,” said Michael Lerman, co-founder and director of film programming. “This year really showcases the old and new guard coming together. We have astounding debuts from exciting newcomers. We have veteran masters that keep reinventing themselves with new work. And we’re just getting started so stay tuned for more.”

With Vile Conduct , Florida’s Bodysnatcher further cemented themselves as one of the titans of modern deathcore. Vocalist Kyle Medina’s brutal growls and personal lyrics take listeners on a sonic and emotional journey, underscored by punishing drums and driving guitars. When you see them live, you’ll also see a smattering of anime references on their merch, in their interludes, and even on Medina’s skin. It’s no surprise, then, to see Bodysnatcher featured here on Crunchyroll. In the interview below, we explore how anime shaped every aspect of Medina’s life, his love of Gundam and Gunpla, and having a metalcore legend feature on one of the band’s tracks. Since the last time I saw you, you've put out the new EP, Vile Conduct , so I’d love to hear a bit more about it, because that's a huge accomplishment. Kyle Medina : It’s pretty sweet!

To tweak Hugh Grant’s best line in “Love Actually,” horror actually is all around.
Whether you’re riding into the new year on your high horse or calmly preparing to walk into the sea, 2025 is a turning point. There’s no genre that tells us who we are or what we’re made of like this one, and the past twelve months have offered audiences a slew of scary stories full of shocks and surprises that were mostly open to interpretation.
Not all of us found powerful metaphors for social change in popular titles, and plenty of terrifying efforts flew under the radar in the genre’s generally high-grossing landscape. There were enough abortion analogies released last spring to merit their own ranking And there’s a reason “MaXXXine” — the definitive film of Brat Girl Summer! — didn’t make many year-end lists. Fittingly, the Mia Goth-starring sequel is...

Wishing all of our Daily Dead readers a very Happy New Year celebration and the absolute best in 2025! Prepping for my year-end list, I read through our Daily Dead archives and couldn’t believe that our “Favorites” series has been going strong since 2013. Time is funny, especially since the pandemic, and everything feels both “not too long ago” and “ages ago” at the same time.
The past few years have had their share of ups and downs, including some significant family loss, but the winter of 2023 was especially challenging, and it marked the first year I didn’t put together my favorites, but I’m thrilled to be back with my favorites this year. Although 2024 presented its own set of challenges, I’m feeling more energized and hopeful than I have in a while as I close out this year and look toward 2025.

2024 has been a great year for horror fans, especially over on Shudder, where some of the most ambitious and original movies have debuted to widespread acclaim. It appears as if 2025 is going to be no different, as the streaming service has just acquired the rights to The Ugly Stepsister – a twisted fairy tale that puts a body horror spin on an old classic.
Written and directed by Norwegian filmmaker Emilie Blichfeldt (in her feature debut), The Ugly Stepsister stars Lea Myren, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, and Ane Dahl Torp, and follows the character of Elvira as she "prepares to earn the prince’s affection at any cost. In a kingdom where beauty is a brutal business, Elvira will compete with the beautiful and enchanting Agnes to become the belle of the ball." Evil Dead fans have plenty to look forward to in the coming years as the franchise based on Sam Raimi's original 1981 film continues to evolve.
French director Sébastien Vaniček recently shared an exciting update on the next planned movie in the franchise, which we now know will be titled Evil Dead Burn. The director shared a photo of the screenplay's title page via his social media account, teasing the next chapter. He and Florent Bernard co-wrote the script.
Previously, Lee Cronin wrote and directed the smash hit 2023 movie Evil Dead Rise, starring Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan as sisters who must combat the Deadites after their kids mistakenly summon them via the infamous Necronomicon, unaware of what the book really entails.
Evil Dead Rise performed very well theatrically, earning more than $147 million and receiving praise from critics. In many ways, Cronin's film felt like a fresh reboot of the long-running franchise,...

Scarlett Johansson’s spider-infested horror movie Eight Legged Freaks was met with negative reviews on its initial release in 2002, but it remains an underrated gem. These days, Johansson is known for starring in giant blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame and Oscar-winning dramas like Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit. But early in her career, she appeared in a wider range of projects — and that includes some of Johansson’s best movies. She appeared in critical darlings like Lost in Translation and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but she also starred in her share of B-movies.
Johansson co-starred with Ewan McGregor in Michael Bay’s sci-fi thriller The Island, she played Alex Pruitt’s older sister in Home Alone 3, and she played the sheriff’s daughter in Ellory Elkayem’s horror comedy Eight Legged Freaks. This movie sees a swarm of spiders getting exposed to mutagenic toxic waste, growing to kaiju size, and attacking a small mining town.

The next Evil Dead film is now officially called Evil Dead Burn, and it’s heading our way in 2026.
The impressive success in cinemas – and on home formats – of last year’s Evil Dead Rise didn’t just resurrect the Evil Dead cinematic franchise, it made a further film a certainty.
And here comes the confirmation of it.
Evil Dead Burn is set to be the next chapter in the saga, and once again we have a new director stepping in to make it. French director Sebastien Vanicek has landed the job, having made his feature directorial debut with the movie Infested. Vanicek has also co-written the script for the new film along with Florent Bernard.
News of the new film was confirmed by the pair on their Instagram accounts, where they posted a picture of the screenplay’s cover. Fittingly, it looked like it’d been typed with a rickety old typewriter.

The future of the Evil Dead franchise is starting to take shape. It's been no secret that Sam Raimi has wanted to continue expanding the Deadite-infested series of films since the massive success of 2023's Evil Dead Rise, and, since they've made their intentions clear, two projects have already been confirmed. One of them, a spin-off hailing from Sébastien Vaniček, who recently delivered the spine-chilling French spider horror flick Infested to U.S. audiences earlier this year, just got a massive update from the director himself regarding a release and a title. In an Instagram post sharing the front page of the script, Vaniček revealed that the new movie will go under the name Evil Dead Burn and teased that it's expected to hit theaters in 2026.

Monsters of all kinds have fascinated humanity for millennia, oftentimes as an explanation for some of the world's most confounding ills and sources of fear. From sabertooth tigers painted on cave walls to modern horror movies, humans have memorialized the nightmarish bogeymen that have imprinted themselves on history. Contemporary pop culture is now marked by the latest interpretations of vampires, aliens, werewolves, and demons, all of which have proven impervious to the march of time.

Horror fans, we're eatin' good (with our eyes). It's been a splendid 2024 already, and we're not even at the Halloween rush yet. Indie darlings like Shudder's "Exhuma" or "Infested" have stunned the platform's subscribers, Neon mesmerized theatergoers with "Immaculate" and "Longlegs," and studio releases like "The First Omen" or "Alien: Romulus" brought the thunder. Can we not bother with the obligatory "Horror's back, baby!" articles this October? Horror never left, horror's always en vogue, and horror's been having one heck of a year.
Like I said, Halloween still two months away. We're still staring at a whole dang slate of spooky season releases on the horizon. With titles like "Speak No Evil" or "Terrifier 3" patiently waiting, the best horror watches this year might still be on the way. Even better, we've seen some of those releases yet to come and can confirm that 2024 still has some tricks up its sleeve.

Sam Raimi's iconic horror franchise Evil Dead is still going strong after all this time. Most recently, fans were treated to last year's fantastically fun Evil Dead Rise, but there's still plenty more on the way, including at least two more live-action movies.
But franchise star Bruce Campbell, who originated the role of Ash in the 1981 film and has reprised the role many times since in different capacities, recently provided Entertainment Weekly with an update on the franchise's future, including confirming that the long-gestating animated series is still in the works.
While it's unlikely we'll see Campbell return as Ash in a significant live-action role, the actor did say he'd happily voice the character for an animated spinoff.
We are developing an animated version, like a series. I'll do that. I'll do Ash's voice all day long, because my voice hasn't aged as much as I have.

Known for playing the brash and sarcastic Ash Williams in the Evil Dead franchise, Bruce Campbell has never been one to dance around an opinion, even when it comes to the beloved horror franchise created by Sam Raimi back in 1981. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Campbell was asked what the future holds for Evil Dead, and as usual, he didnt hold back.
"The future is two more damn movies. We've got two new fabulous directors that have two new scripts in the shoot, and we think we've suckered a studio into coughing up the dough for both, since they seem to still make money."
Those "two more damn movies" were announced earlier this year, and come by way of director Francis Gallupi, who helmed this years indie hit The Last Stop in Yuma County, and Sbastien Vaniek, who took point on 2024s creepy crawly spider movie, Infested. Both...

The only award season that matters is here! Joking (kind of), but seriously, Fangoria just released the complete list of nominees for the 2024 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards. Considering how often horror gets shut out of the mainstream award shows, it's nice to have at least one thing we can rely on year after year.
Last year's Chainsaw Awards included big wins for movies like The Black Phone, Terrifier 2, and Prey. This time, the categories are again stacked, with films like Abigail, Evil Dead Rise, The First Omen, Talk To Me, Late Night with the Devil, and many more going head to head.
Specific performances are also being highlighted, like Tobin Bell in Saw X and Kathryn Newton for both Lisa Frankenstein and Abigail. It's been a fantastic few years for horror, and it'll be exciting to see which movies pull ahead this time around.

Infested, a French horror movie about a spider unleashing venomous threats, receives praise from Corridor Crew for its impressive blend of practical and CGI arachnids. Netting a "Certified Fresh" 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and glowing review from Stephen King, the movie could lead to a resurgence in spider-driven horror films. Infested's success also proves exciting for co-writer/director Sbastien Vaniek's upcoming Evil Dead, as he could bring a thrilling blend of Deadite terrors and insightful social commentary.
While the movie has already proven to be one of the year's biggest horror hits, Infested is getting a glowing review from Corridor Crew. Co-written and directed by Sbastien Vaniek, the French horror movie centered on an exotic animal lover who acquires a spider, which unknowingly unleashes a venomous threat on his rundown apartment complex. Following a successful run in its home country, Infested premiered internationally on Shudder, where it garnered further rave reviews from critics and audiences,...

The halfway point of 2024 is already here, and what a strange year it’s been so far. In terms of box office, the genre’s gotten off to a sluggish start compared to previous years, save for a surprise international hit that’s taken Asian markets by storm. It’s also been a big year for twin films, with dual spider flicks Sting and Infested unleashing arachnophobic terror, followed by the dueling nun horror movies Immaculate and The First Omen. Speaking of the latter, horror prequels – including A Quiet Place: Day One – have offered some of the year’s biggest horror surprises so far, along with buzzy indie darlings like Late Night with the Devil and In a Violent Nature.
This summer’s only getting warmed up for horror releases, with some of the year’s most anticipated titles on the immediate horizon. MaXXXine and Longlegs are just around the corner,...

Under Paris on Netflix showcases a resurgence in creature features, with comparisons to Jaws and a focus on gory thrills over logical inconsistencies. 2024 has seen success for monster movies like Under Paris, Infested, and Sting, proving that the genre is making a comeback both in and outside the US. Hollywood hits like Godzilla x Kong may dominate, but smaller international films like Under Paris are finding success without big budgets or star power.

In A Violent Nature, an undead murderous monster’s slow striding through the woods, has generated IFC Films’ second-best opening ever since its indie horror hit Late Night With The Devil in March.
The artsy slasher written and directed by Chris Nash will see an estimated weekend gross of $2.1 million on 1,426 screens, IFC’s widest opening ever, and a no. 8 spot at the domestic box office.
Late Night, by Cameron and Colin Cairnes, which opened to $2.8 million at 1,034 locations, is pushing $10 million. It returns to theaters June 6 and runs through the weekend on about 500 screens.
In A Violent Nature “has been steadily making waves for redefining the classic slasher genre” since its Sundance premiere, said Scott Shooman, head of AMC Networks Film Group, calling Nash’s feature debut “a film that will have a lasting impact in the horror space.”

Once upon a time, creature features were a popular subgenre of horror. Everything from Jaws to Cujo to Tremors did big business, along with a lot of more silly entries. We're looking at you Sharknado! When done right, a creature feature can be terrifying, as the humans must pay for their sins when the animals of the Earth seek their revenge. This year saw the release of the French horror film, Infested, from first time director Sbastien Vaniek. It's Evil Dead Rise meets Arachnophobia, as a horde of massive spiders takes over a rundown apartment complex.. Infested is more than just another overdone CGI fest, but a creepy crawly horror film that will make your skin crawl while it makes you think. Stephen King loved it, giving it his seal of approval on social media, and if you can put your fears aside and give it a chance, you will too.

Now we’re crossing a classic title off our list: Ridley Scott‘s Alien.
Alien tells the story of the crew of the Nostromo as they’re awoken from stasis to answer a distress beacon on a nearby planet. When Kane (John Hurt) is attacked on an alien ship, Warrant Officer Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) refuses to let Captain Dallas (Tom Skerritt) and Navigator Lambert (Veronica Cartwright) back on board with quarantining.
Science Officer Ash (Ian Holm) overrides her command and brings them inside, but as the alien creature on Kane’s face evolves, it becomes clear that there’s more than one antagonist on board the ship and everyone, including Engineers Parker...

If you're going to make a creature feature, making spiders the villains is the easiest way to frighten an audience. Some have done it well, like this year's Sting and Infested, along with 1977's William Shatner-starring Kingdom of the Spiders. Some have gone for a more silly route, such as 2002's Eight Legged Freaks. And then there's the plethora of giant spiders made of bad CGI in little-seen movies over the last few decades. But no creature feature made up of eight-legged creepy crawlies will ever top 1990's Arachnophobia, starring Jeff Daniels and John Goodman, and directed by Frank Marshall. It has some comedy, for sure (Goodman is hilarious as exterminator Delbert McClintock), but it's also truly terrifying because almost every single shot includes real spiders. There is no CGI, and outside of a few scenes of Daniels battling the final boss spider, no use of animatronics. That doesn't...

Despite a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score, Infested receives mixed audience reviews due to its treatment of spiders compared to other films. Cinematically speaking, spiders are having a miniature moment. On April 12, 2024, fans of creature features were treated to Kiah Roache-Turner's "Sting," a film about an alien spider that grows to an enormous size and terrorizes the denizens of a run-down apartment building. Then, on April 26, the United States was granted access to Sébastien Vanicek's "Infested" (French title: "Vermines"), a film about many spiders that grow to enormous sizes and terrorize the denizens of a run-down apartment building. These two films, of course, came hot on the heels of the February release of "Madame Web," the best Spider-Man-adjacent, non-Marvel-Cinematic-Universe-related mid-budget clairvoyance caper film ever made.

Arachnophobes are in for a bit of a rough time, because streaming platforms and cinemas will be positively crawling with spider-based monster movies before you know it. Well, two, anyway. First up is French spider-thriller Infested (out now on Shudder), with Australian creature feature Sting creeping into cinemas on May 31st.
Also known as Vermines, Infested is the feature debut of French director Sebastien Vanicek. Set in present-day Paris, the film centres on hustler Kaleb (Theo Christine), who shares a flat with his sister Manon (Lisa Nyarko) in a run-down apartment building that’s home to several other multicultural tenants.

Word recently broke that a new "Evil Dead" movie was on the way, with filmmaker Francis Galluppi ("The Last Stop in Yuma County") at the helm. This news came accompanied by the following statement from "Evil Dead' mastermind Sam Raimi: "Francis Galluppi is a storyteller who knows when to keep us waiting in simmering tension and when to hit us with explosive violence. He is a director that shows uncommon control in his feature debut."
The curious thing about this info is that earlier this year, we learned another "Evil Dead" movie was in the works, this one directed by Sébastien Vaniček, the filmmaker behind the killer spider movie "Infested." That's right: There are now two different "Evil Dead" movies on the way. And that, in my humble opinion, is a good thing! The "Evil Dead" franchise feels big enough to encompass all sorts of entries because the basic...

Director Sébastien Vaniček has been set to helm the next Evil Dead movie, and it’s easy to see why with his feature debut, the spider horror movie Infested. Playing like a cross between Attack the Block and Arachnophobia, Infested makes you care about its characters while delivering no shortage of skin-crawling spider horror moments.
Available now on Shudder, Infested follows Kaleb (Théo Christine), a lonely 30 year old who’s estranged from his best friend and at odds with his sister over their crumbling apartment. His dreams of opening a reptile zoo get drastically thwarted when he brings home an illegally acquired desert spider, one that happens to be gravid, and it gets loose. One hatched egg sac gives way to hundreds more, plunging the apartment building into a visceral arachnophobic nightmare.
It’s not just that Infested employs real spiders for many of the skin-crawling horror moments that make it so effective,...
