Women in pink sarees dot the lush rural landscape. They want revenge. Men, all raunchy paunchy rapists, leery bribe seekers, and rowdy merrymakers, get their comeuppance in the hands of these pink ladies armed with sickles, sticks, knives, and gumption. Director Soumik Sen’s film is designed as a flamboyant, loud, and message-driven film on women’s empowerment. In parts, it looks like a government-sponsored documentary on rural development with Madhuri to ensure people care and respond to the message.
This would be as good as any place to reveal that the makers’ claims that the film is Not based on Sampat Pal’s missionary zeal, is blatantly untrue. From the colour of the saree to the whole idea of making the male species look and feel really,...

Picking the best Shyam Benegal movies is an embarrassment of riches. His body of work is unprecedented for Indian cinema. My delightful dilemma was not about which ones to choose but about the ones to abandon. He interrupted Hindi film’s archetypal romance, drama, and comedy strips. Shyam Babu (as he is fondly referred to) stubbornly defied the saleable account with social pragmatism. He also spearheaded the fractures that were commencing to surface in the society due to the chaotic socio-political environment of a young nation in 1974, the year he debuted. He triggered and became the colonizer of parallel cinema in India with his path-breaking debut feature, Ankur (1974). Mr. Benegal has won seven National Awards for Best Feature Film in Hindi throughout his career!
Self-admittedly, Shyam Benegal’s style of filmmaking is heavily inspired by the works of Satyajit Ray. And if you observe closely, you could also find impressionable,...

Ar Rahman & Wife Saira Banu Have Announced Separation ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
The internet was broken and surprised last night when Ar Rahman’s wife Saira Banu announced her heartbreaking separation from the music maestro. This was followed by another note by the music composer himself. While the fans could not believe this was happening after 29 years of their marriage, others could not react.
However, Rahman’s separation note and a very strange attachment made the internet lose its calm, and while everyone was respecting their privacy earlier, it started to get trolled because of a basic mistake made by the PR probably!
Ar Rahman’s note said, “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again.

Indian actress Huma Qureshi is an established force in Bollywood, with her decade-long rise to fame encompassing credits such as Gangs of Wasseypur and Dedh Ishqiya. She is now getting her crack at Hollywood via Army Of The Dead, Zack Snyder’s zombie movie that is currently screening in U.S. theaters ahead of its global Netflix bow on May 21.
It’s been a period of mixed emotions for Qureshi. She is receiving praise for her American cinema debut and is already considering her next moves in the West, and the film’s streaming release is only going to intensify her recognition outside of her native India. However, the film’s rollout has been punctured by the pandemic and due to travel restrictions, she is unable to be with her castmates such as Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, and Omari Hardwick to celebrate the release.

Last week all of Mumbai was abuzz with rumours that Madhuri Dixit was all set to star in S S Rajamouli's Bahubali Returns. Apparently Madhuri was all set to play Anushka Shetty's sister. But Rajamouli in an exclusive response to this writer totally debunks the rumour. A source close to the project adds, "There are all kinds of rumours and speculations flitting around about the Bahubali sequel. We don't know where the Madhuri one came from because there is no truth to it. Websites have even written the role of Anushka Shetty's sister for Madhuri in Bahubali 2. But so far there is no new addition to the cast at all." Curiously Madhuri who made a much-talked about comeback in 2014 with Dedh Ishqiya and Gulaab Gang hasn't been able to make any headway post her return to acting. Both films bombed badly, leaving the very graceful Ms Dixit-Nene with no acting offers at all.

2014 was a year that has been received mixed reactions. Bollywood though still gave us lots of love, pain, laughs, action and beauty. The year began with Dedh Ishqiya and ended with an outer space experience.
While films such as Kick, Happy New Year, Bang Bang and Pk broke records…last year we also saw a huge leap in storytelling with successes like Highway, Haider, Queen, Mary Kom and Finding Fanny. And of course there was lots more that made 2014 unforgettable.
Writer Charla Manohar and Warsha Narain from Total Mind Media decided to put all the great moments together. Enjoy The Best of Bollywood 2014 in 01:42 minutes.

2014 was a fantastic year for music in Indian Cinema. We saw a definite shift from formularistic numbers to more nuanced tunes in step with the respective screenplays they would be featured alongside. Music directors were bold and brave, breaching familiarity and conventions to taking risks and we could not be more mesmerised by the results. Hamlet was adapted to a gritty and raw musical by Vishal Bhardwaj. Ankit Tiwari and Mithoon basically defied gravity by re-creating the magic of Aashiqui 2 with Ek Villian. Read on as Bollyspice closely chronicles 2014’s top 10 music directors.
10. Jeet Gangulay
Jeet Gangulay’s Citylights was the silent hit of 2014 with Arjit Singh’s Mukurane becoming a crowd favourite from the get-go followed closely by Mohd. Irfan’s unplugged version of the song. While Youngistan did not do well at the box office, Gangulay’s ‘Sangemarmar’ definitely left a mark. Similarly, ‘Sun Le Zara’ from Singham was equally effective.

For the music of the films of 2014, the composers brought in classic voices, new vocal sounds and vibes and even an actress or two to bring their songs to life. Usually we limit our list to the 5 Best Female Singers but this year we had to expand to 10 in order to highlight their fabulous performances.
10. Shraddha Kapoor
For the first time an actress makes it to our Best Female Singers countdown. Shraddha not only shined in two completely different roles in Ek Villain and Haider, the young actress also showed off her lovely voice with two completely different tunes. With ‘Galliyan’ from Ek Villain, she impressed with her melodious tones. In ‘Do Jahaan’ from Haider she sang a Kashmiri folk song, about which director and composer Vishal Bhardwaj said, “After listening to the song they (Kashmiris) would want to keep you with themselves.” Perhaps one day in the future she...

2014 proved that with most of the year’s top grossers receiving lukewarm reviews from critics at best.
Salman Khan’s Eid release Kick was the year’s top grosser in India with 231 crore. According to review aggregating site Weird Angles, Kick got an average score of 5.5 from critics on a scale of 10. Saibal Chatterjee from Ndtv gave the movie 2 out of 5 and said “it provides a kick only sporadically,” while Sarita Tanvar from DNA gave the movie 4 stars and called it “a non-stop entertainment and Salman Khan at his best. We here BollySpice only rated it 1.5 stars.
Another Khan holiday release came in second at the India box office: Shahrukh Khan’s Happy New Year (202 crore), which also got mixed reviews an overall 5.1/10. Rediff rated the film 2 out of 5 stars,...

After two back to back films, Dedh Ishqiya and Gulaab Gang, Madhuri Dixit has taken a mini break from acting with no new films being signed. Though she is active when it comes to her online dance school, it would be a while before she is seen on the big screen again. Says Madhuri, I was so much busy with the shooting of these two films last year and their promotion this year that I didn't even have time to sit down and think about my nextThere were speculations that...

Huma Qureshi zoomed into Bollywood with Gangs Of Wasseypur and Ek Thi Daayan, and received plenty of accolades for her performance in her last-released flick Dedh Ishqiya. The actress, who shared the screen with senior actors like Madhuri Dixit, Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi in the film, admitted that she is not someone who was insecure about it. Honestly speaking, I have never felt insecure in Bollywood. I am not an insecure person. Rather, I feel...

She may not be mouthing expletives in Gulaab Gang, despite the rough terrain that the film has been set in. However in the context of the film, Madhuri Dixit has indeed turned adventurous when it comes to her spoken words, lingo and an overall colourful language. For audiences who have been seeing the lady perform over the decades, this is indeed a first, especially after the aura ofandtehzeebthat she had brought on screen recently with Dedh Ishqiya.

Last week, the co-producers of Dedh Ishqiya - Shemaroo, hosted a screening of Dedh Ishqiya for the Lgbt (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual trans-gender) community at the PVR Juhu. A first for any mainstream commercial Hindi film. Earlier Onir's I Am and Viacom 18's Bombay Talkies which also dealt with homosexuality, never got around to screening the films specifically and exclusively for gay-transgender communities. The response to Madhuri Dixit and Huma Qureshi's alluded lesbianism in Dedh Ishqiya was overwhelming during the Lgbt screening of the film. Now one hears the producers want to further tap the non-mainstream alternate-sex market by screening the film in different cities and then abroad for the gay community. Says Ketan Maroo of Shemaroo, "We are quite overwhelmed by the response to the film from every community. We are happy the Lgbt community has embraced the film. Dedh Ishqiya has also been loved by female audiences. Audiences...

Madhuri Dixit was supremely sanguine of Dedh Ishqiya raking in financial returns and critical accolades. Pity, the former never really fructified. Presently, though, the actress is all gung-ho over the reception to the trailer of Gulaab Gang, a bio-pic based on the life of Sampat Pal and 'Gulabi Gang', her band of vigilantes. Dedh Ishqiya, sequel to the successful Ishqiya, opened slow on Friday but grew almost 70 percent over the weekend with Saturday and Sunday and maintained a steady run during the week.
The week figures according to trade analysis for India totalled to 19.5 crores net and overseas added another 5.30 crores. With a second weekend looking steady due to excellent word of mouth and critic reviews and clear run at the box office without any major release in the week.
Starring Madhuri Dixit, Huma Quershi, Arshad Warsi and Naseeruddin Shah, the film has received rave reviews. There were two star studded events in the last week that demand the attention of our Fashion crew – the launch of the Dabboo Ratnani Calendar 2014 and the premier of Abhishek Chaubhey’s Dedh Ishqiya.

Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Rampal, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu and Sonakshi Sinha all made appearances to promote their shots but other celebs included Gulshan Grover, Sophie Chaudhury, Mandira Bedi, Anu Malika and Subhash Ghai. Although Hrithik Roshan didn’t make an appearance, his parents Pinky and Rakesh were there to support his shot.

Though Dedh Ishqiya had a smooth clearance from the Censor Board prior to the release, the Cbfc had asked the filmmakers to delete a scene where Arshad Warsi was visiting a brothel. However, when a Censor Board member visited the screening post the release, it was seen that the shot wasn't removed from the film. Hence the CEO of the Censor Board Film Certification, Rakesh Kumar, revealed that they have issued a show cause seeking an explanation for the same. The filmmakers claim that this was a result of a technical issue. Producer Raman Maru of Shemaroo stated that some theatres couldn't blur out the 20 second scene due to bad lighting and the problem will be resolved soon. Dedh Ishqiya stars Madhuri Dixit, Naseeruddin Shah, Huma Qureshi and Arshad Warsi.

The winner
With Oscar nominations announced this Thursday, the annual awards season is now in full swing, presenting the perfect opportunity for a potentially challenging adult drama – Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave – to engage cinema audiences.
And so it proved, with a very healthy £2.51m opening for the gritty true story from just 207 cinemas, delivering a site average of £12,132.
Local distributor eOne was quick to trumpet this achievement as bigger than the UK opening of Slumdog Millionaire (£1.83m from 324 cinemas), and with a higher screen average than the debut of The King's Speech (£8,919). Both those titles were massive feel-good crowdpleasers that went on to achieve enormous multiples of their opening numbers.

Abhishek Chaubhey’s first directorial venture, Ishqiya, received tremendous praise from critics. The fantastic performances from Vidya Balan, Naseerudin Shah and Arshad Warsi were supported by witty dialogues and dark humour. Chaubhey’s sequel, Dedh Ishqiya ,is an equally edgy and ‘thrilling’ product with the same level of wit and humour but an even juicier romance owing to the comeback of the dreamy Madhuri Dixit-Nene.
