For eight seasons, "Monk" struck that perfect balance between hard-cracking detective work and comedy. Police procedurals were a dime a dozen in the early 2000s, but the thing to set this one apart from its contemporaries was the fact the titular Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) dealt with obsessive-compulsive disorder. This fueled his 312 phobias, which occasionally got in the way of him solving cases, but they also allowed him to view the world in a unique way that would help him solve various crimes.
"Monk" ended in 2009, but fans got one last fix thanks to 2023's made-for-Peacock movie, "Mr. Monk's Last Case," which /Film called "an overdue reunion" with much of the central cast reprising their roles. But it's not like the cast was kept in stasis for 13 years between the show's ending and the reunion. Many of them went on to other things, filling out their filmographies with myriad other projects.

Timothée Chalamet’s expression was one of genuine shock when he heard his name called out at the 31st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. However, the talented thespian has his sights set on much more than simply his SAG honor for Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role. No, Chalamet doesn’t have any intention of resting on his laurels, and the star of A Complete Unknown made it crystal clear during his acceptance speech that he wants to be one of Hollywood's “greats.” Chalamet said:
"I can’t downplay the significance of this award [known as The Actor] because it means the most to me, and I know we’re in a subjective business, but the truth is I’m really in the pursuit of greatness. I know people usually don’t talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats. I’m inspired by the greats. I’m inspired by the greats here tonight.

Monk had many great episodes across its eight seasons. The series followed the titular character, a former police officer played by Tony Shalhoub, who suffers from multiple mental afflictions stemming from an anxiety disorder. Despite other people judging him for his phobias, Monk is the most observant and logical person in any room, able to solve even the most impossible cases as a consultant for the police department.
The innovative comedy drama produced a total of 125 episodes between 2002 and 2009. Many of these were met with critical acclaim and cemented Adrian Monk as a cultural icon, to the point the character returned more than a decade after the end of the show for a feature-length special called Mr. Monk's Last Case. The best episodes of the original show have fascinating mysteries, stellar performances, and engaging scenes.

Tony Shalhoub's long-running police procedural Monk switched theme songs after the first season, but the show never explained why. Thanks to all the great episodes of Monk, Shalhoub's police procedural became one of the most beloved TV shows ever. There are so many iconic elements at play that helped it gain a huge following, from Adrian's idiosyncrasies to all the famous guest stars Monk was able to secure. One of the most memorable parts of Monk - its theme song - actually changed partway through the show, and the series never explained why.
In the first season of Monk, the show had a completely instrumental theme written by Jeff Beal. Fans of the show liked the smooth jazz feel of the song, and the Monk theme even won an Emmy for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music in 2003. Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie has an important reason for being darker than the original television series. In addition to being a procedural television show, Monk was both a comedy and a drama. The premise of a man with debilitating phobias who could never solve his wife's murder is inherently tragic. At the same time, these phobias lead to many comedic scenarios and interactions throughout Monk's best episodes, including the germaphobia and fear of flying that Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) has.
There is a deeply emotional undercurrent to Monk's story, especially when the mystery of what happened to Monk's wife, Trudy (Melora Hardin) comes to the forefront, but there is a lightness to the overall series as well. Even many of Monk's most heartbreaking episodes find ways to incorporate humor. Beyond Monk, other characters like Randy Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford) and Monk's rival,...

Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie benefited from using one of the original series' best tricks. Airing from 2002-2009, Monk followed a procedural format that helped make the series a hit. While most of Monk's best episodes had their own mysteries to solve and could stand on their own, the series also had the overarching mystery of Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) trying to uncover the truth about his wife's unsolved murder. This made Monk work well as an episodic show and when watching the entire series.
Given the show's success and enduring legacy, it was only a matter of time before a revival happened, which eventually came to fruition with a reunion in Mr. Monk's Last Case. In addition to bringing back Shalhoub and other key members for the cast of Mr. Monk's Last Case, the Peacock movie featured many beloved hallmarks from the series. This included ending with...

14 years after Monk ended, the film sequel Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie reinvigorated the fandom – but it wasn’t enough. Though the film (along with the series finale) provided some amount of closure, it also arguably opened the door for the beloved franchise to be continued with another Monk movie. There is still plenty of unexplored territory in the Monk universe, including the potential to bring back one of its many iconic guest actors.
In “Mr. Monk and the Big Game,” the series featured an unexpected Monk cameo from Jennifer Lawrence in the role of a mascot. Though her cougar costume rendered the young star unrecognizable for the majority of the appearance, the episode served as one of Lawrence’s first television roles. It is because of this origin that, out of all the famous Monk guest stars, Lawrence would be the best option for a reprisal role in a Monk movie sequel.

The long-awaited comeback of Adrian Monk in Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie delivered a nostalgic and fan-pleasing return to the beloved detective’s journey from the original series, Monk. Fans were treated to all the hallmarks of the series: Monk’s meticulous crime-solving, his signature quirks, and a seemingly unsolvable case. However, no reunion would be complete without the beloved cast of characters that fill out the show. Thankfully, Mr Monk's Last Case featured most of its original cast, allowing the series to also revisit the unique thought processes of another key character, Randy Disher.
Throughout Monk’s original and celebrated eight-season run and in many of Monk's greatest episodes, San Francisco police lieutenant Randy Disher was the sidekick to Captain Stottlemeyer. Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie found the time to honor the show’s best and arguably most underrated relationship. Set almost 15 years after the events of “Mr. Monk and the End,” Mr. Monk’s Last Case got the cast back together for one more case, even though most of them were no longer detectives or members of the force. Apart from Randy, everyone else had moved on to other jobs or retired. This includes Leland Stottlemeyer, who retired from public service and was now in the private sector.
Stottlemeyer’s new job as Rick Eden’s head of security turned out to be important to the plot as the billionaire businessman was Adrian’s primary suspect of having killed Molly’s fiancé. While Stottlemeyer was very happy at his job and did not want to believe Eden was guilty, he eventually accepted that Adrian was right after confronting...

The well-loved comedy crime drama Monk (2002-2009) recently enjoyed a reprisal with Randy Zisk's 2023 film Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie. The film sequel follows former detective Adrian Monk as he investigates one final case for his step-daughter, Molly. The movie brought back nearly all of the Monk original cast, including Hector Elizondo's Dr. Neven Bell. Dr. Bell was introduced at the start of season 7 in the same episode where Monk has to deal with the loss of Dr. Charles Kroger, who died of a heart attack.
Fans of the original Monk series may recall the season 7 death of Dr. Charles Kroger, which led to his replacement with Dr. Neven Bell. Unfortunately, the real-life reason behind this major character's death was that Dr. Kroger's actor, Stanley Kamel, passed away from a heart attack. Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie acknowledged one of the show’s most important characters despite not bringing them back for the reunion. With only 90 minutes to revisit Adrian and the rest of the Monk cast, Mr. Monk’s Last Case could only reference so many supporting characters. Even Bitty Schram’s Sharona, who left the show during season 3 but remained an important part of the story offscreen, was left out of the movie apart from the flashback at the start.
Set almost 15 years after the end of Monk, Mr. Monk’s Last Case saw Adrian trying to prove that what happened to Molly’s fiancé was not an accident. While the Monk movie did not have time for a lot of cameos and focused on the “last case,” it did acknowledge some of the most important parts of the original series, even through throwaway lines and Easter eggs.

Actress Bitty Schram played Adrian Monk’s annoyed yet loving nurse in the procedural comedy Monk. For almost three seasons, Schram put up with Monk’s obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression from his wife’s death while also helping him out with his cases. However, Schram left midway through the third season.
Many reasons have been given for Schram’s exit. The actress had great chemistry with Tony Shalhoub’s Adrian Monk and the initial seasons had many memorable episodes where the two had some impressive banter. However, the character was revealed to have re-married her ex and moved to New Jersey, introducing a new assistant named Natalie Teeger.

Mr. Monks Last Case: A Monk Movie was a great way to revisit Tony Shalhoubs Adrian Monk and the rest of the characters, but the best thing about the Monk film was also its biggest flaw. After the cast of Monk reunited for a brief web episode released during the pandemic in which Adrians friends checked in on him, it became clear that we needed some sort of Monk revival to address how Adrian navigated the quarantine. This is how the Monk movie was born, with the film being released on Peacock on December 8, 2023.
Monk had 125 episodes across eight seasons, most of which were standalone stories and followed the case-of-the-week formula. The series finale, "Mr. Monk And The End," revealed that Trudy had a daughter from a previous relationship who was discovered by Adrian after he finally learned who had his wife killed. Emmy voters are now halfway through final balloting for this year’s awards, making decisions about which drama and comedy series, limited series, talk series, variety series and specials, structured and unstructured reality programs, reality competition shows, animated programs, documentary and nonfiction programs and game shows they like best.

CBS continues to move ahead with its long-term development strategy, ordering another pilot targeting the 2025-26 broadcast season. The network has picked up to pilot drama Einstein (working title), from the Monk team of creator/executive producer Andy Breckman and director/executive producer Randy Zisk.
It follows a pilot order for comedy Dmv and a development room for comedy Eternally Yours (working title) — all looking to join Sheriff Country, CBS’ first new scripted series set for a launch during the 2025-26 season.

Monk's successful template allows for a standalone sequel, following the series' accessible and procedural format. A potential Mr. Monk's Last Case sequel should focus on a new, unrelated case to maintain the series' appeal. The return of core cast members alongside Shalhoub's iconic performance can continue the effective balance of humor and drama.
Monk's best episodes have already provided a template for a potential sequel to Mr. Monk's Last Case. Sandra Oh and Awkwafina proved to be a terrific duo this year in their hit Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady.” The flick follows the pair as estranged sisters who must reunite and work together in order to pay for their mother’s gambling debts via the game show that one of them is obsessed with.

Over the past 20 years, Sandra Oh has been a darling of the Emmys, accumulating 14 nominations across multiple genres. But surprisingly, she hasn’t won yet. This year she’s nominated for Best TV Movie for producing “Quiz Lady,” in which she also stars with Awkwafina as sisters trying to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. It looks like a close race as none of the five films in the category have any other nominations, so knowing that this is a chance to finally award Oh her first Emmy might tip the scales in her favor.

The nominations for the 76th annual Emmys have dropped. There were some records broken, a lot of surprises including 36 first-time nominees and some major snubs. And a lot of fun facts and trivia about this year’s nominees. FX’s period drama series “Shogun” earning 25 Emmy nominations this year, the most of any dramatic series this year. The original NBC miniseries adaptation of the James Clavell best-seller which starred Richard Chamberlain and the legendary Toshiro Mifune received 14 nominations and won for limited series, costume design, graphic design and title sequences. Hulu’s “The Bear” broke the record for most nominations for a comedy series earning 23 nominations. NBC’s “30 Rock” had held the record with 22 nominations since 2009. Native Americans finally have some representation in this year’s nomination with Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis earning outstanding supporting actress nominations for Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” and HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.

Some things about the Emmys are predictable. Every awards observer figured that FX’s Shōgun and The Bear would get lots of nominations today, and they did: 25 and 23, respectively, the latter a record for the comedy categories in the case of The Bear.
But unexpected things, both good and bad, always happen when the Emmy nominations are announced, and this year’s list was no different. Let’s run through some of those.

With fewer eligible series — a consequence of both last year’s strikes and of a general post-Peak TV contraction — it seemed unlikely that the Emmys (the second such ceremony this year!) would provide much in the way of surprises.
Perhaps, though, awards-watchers shouldn’t have counted them out.
Wednesday morning’s nominations announcement featured at least one major contender (Emma Stone in “The Curse”) shut out, and included heartening and unexpected recognition for other stars whose names hadn’t been part of the conversation to this point. (Congratulations to Idris Elba and Matt Berry!)
In all, the Emmy nominations depict an industry in rapid transition — relatively few returning series made the cut. But nowhere was the competition more pitched, and the volume of surprise omissions as high, as in the limited series field. (Read the full list of nominees here.)

Once again, the Emmy Awards nominations don’t include a slew of TV favorites. Among the most notable snubs: Emma Stone for Best Drama Actress and a complete shutout of her Showtime series “The Curse.” Equally surprising was “Shogun” supporting actresses Moeka Hoshi and Fumi Nikaido missing the ballot. On the comedy side, Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” missed for Comedy Series and a forecasted bid for its star Theo James. And although “The Bear” had a solid morning overall, Abby Elliott wasn’t able to ride the wave of fortune in Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Oliver Platt and Matty Matheson were also snubbed on the Supporting Actor side.
Below, we enumerate the top 50 Emmys snubs in our estimation. These were the shows and performers that we thought had a strong chance to number among this year’s nominees. Let us know if there are others missing from this list that...

Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie's success deserves a follow-up, like the Psych sequel movies. Monk's quirky charm and unique genius make him a lovable character for viewers to root for. A Monk 2 sequel could continue Monk's story with new cases and perhaps even a crossover with Psych.
The Monk spinoff Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie should get a follow-up after the success of the Psych sequel movies. Monk was a detective dramedy that centered on Tony Shalhoub's titular former detective with Ocd. A quirky, uniquely likable protagonist, Monk was the unlikely genius who solved countless crimes via his obsessive attention to detail. Over a decade and a half after the shows finale aired, 2023s Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie brought him back for one last hurrah. The spinoff movie was well received, which inevitably prompted calls for Monk 2 to continue the series.

Jeff Daniels is always a reliably excellent performer whether its in comedy or drama, TV or film, and the veteran actor has turned in another masterclass performance in Netflix’s “A Man in Full.”
Adapted from Tom Wolfe‘s novel of the same name and created by “Big Little Lies” helmer David E. Kelley, “A Man in Full” follows Daniels as real estate mogul Charlie Croker, who tries to protect his empire and legacy from crumbling when he falls into sudden bankruptcy. Daniels dominated the screen here, chewing scenery, spitting it out with venom, and then re-chewing the scenery some more. Whatever you may think of the show, Daniels is never anything less than ferociously good, as noted by critics.

Last Thursday marked the beginning of the annual 11-day period during which members of the TV academy cast their ballots for the Primetime Emmy nominations. Since there are fewer candidates in practically every category compared to last year, there are also fewer nomination slots up for grabs. Indeed, performers eligible for half of the 16 main acting awards must now fight harder to officially compete for them.

“We ended on such a high note, we were very proud of the final two episodes and how the series wrapped up,” reflects Tony Shalhoub on the emotions that were involved in revisiting a character he had bid farewell to so perfectly 15 years ago. For eight seasons, the Emmy Award winner portrayed detective Adrian Monk on the series “Monk,” a character who returns in the Peacock original film “Mr. Monk’s Last Case.” The star – who also serves as executive producer – says the whole team wanted to “match that or outdo what we did at the end” of the show, which felt like a “daunting proposition.” Watch our exclusive video interview.
Shalhoub makes his return to the role look effortless, but it was important to the actor that he not play the character exactly as he had when he bid the detective farewell in 2009. He says that he and the rest...

Two stars of Suits have weighed in on the possibility of a reunion movie. Patrick J. Adams said he would be interested in doing a reunion project. His co-star Dul Hill agreed, calling himself "a fan of USA shows becoming films."
Two of the stars of Suits have weighed in on the possibility of a reunion movie. The USA Network legal drama, which starred Gabriel Macht, Patrick J. Adams, Meghan Markle, Sarah Rafferty, and more, ran for nine seasons between 2011 and 2019. It became a record-breaking streaming hit in 2023 when the first eight seasons dropped on Netflix alongside the full show being available on Peacock. Because of this success, rumors about a possible Suits revival have swirled over the past few months.
Per Deadline, the Suits cast was asked about the possibility of a reunion movie during a Q&a at a panel at Atx. Adams said that creator Aaron Korsh...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as the eligibility period closes Friday, we discuss two last-minute limited/TV movie hopefuls.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.

Tony Shalhoub open to reprising Monk role for potential sequel, pending right timing and material. Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie tackles dark topic of Monk's mental health struggles, including contemplating suicide. Show creator hopeful for future Monk projects; emphasizes importance of subtle handling of serious themes.
Could another case be on the horizon for Adrian Monk? Tony Shalhoub is not opposed to reprising his Emmy Award-winning role for a sequel to Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie. Released on December 8, 2023, in Peacock, the film followed Monk (who is struggling with his Obsessive Compulsive Disorder due to the pandemic) as he returns to solve one last case involving his stepdaughter Molly. Like the USA Network series that prefaced the film, Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie earned critical acclaim (it currently boasts a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes).

HBO broadcast its first women’s boxing bout, between Kali Reis and Cecilia Brækhus, in 2018. Just six years later, Reis is one of the stars on HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” where she plays Detective Evangeline Navarro alongside Jodie Foster. That could very well be the first time any HBO lead was first seen on the pay cabler in a boxing match.
“What’s really great about this whole journey is that things that are so far fetched are like not impossible in some part of my brain that understands that it’s a possibility,” Reis tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “And I think that’s one of the many things that keeps me grinding so hard.”
In the series, Reis plays Evangeline Navarro, a half-Dominican state trooper in Ennis, a fictional town in rural northern Alaska. Reis spoke to the Awards Circuit Podcast about her interpretation of...

Last Thursday, FX confirmed that its adaptation of James Clavell’s “Shōgun” will continue past its first season and thus compete as a drama series rather than a limited one at the upcoming Emmys. Since it had spent the preceding three weeks as Gold Derby’s predicted Best Limited Series winner and was expected to reap several acting nominations, every drama and limited race was shaken up by its reclassification – and the dust still has not settled.
Within 48 hours of the “Shōgun” shift, our 2,500+ Emmy predictors came to the consensus that it will be nominated for Best Drama Series and all of the corresponding main acting awards. Even lead actor Cosmo Jarvis and supporting actress Moeka Hoshi, who never quite managed to reach predicted nominee status before, quickly broke into our forecasted drama lineups. Jarvis and his seemingly more secure lead male costar, Hiroyuki Sanada, displaced both Tom Hiddleston (“Loki...

“After 14 years to get the cast back together, the team back together, it was a blast,” declares Randy Zisk about directing the 2023 Peacock original film “Mr. Monk’s Last Case,” a follow-up to the original series starring Tony Shalhoub. “Everyone was so excited to do it. It came together pretty well and pretty easily.” We talked with Zisk as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV directors panel. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Created by Andy Breckman, “Monk” originally ran from 2002 to 2009 on USA, winning Shalhoub three Emmys for Best Comedy Actor for playing the title detective who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder. “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” brings him back to solve the murder of his stepdaughter’s fiancé, for which a ruthless billionaire (James Purefoy) is the prime suspect. Monk is reluctant to return to solving crimes, however, as his mental illness has intensified and he’s contemplating suicide.

“Monk” is the epitome of the classic blue-sky show. Its mysteries are gripping, but the show’s characters are inviting — always giving viewers a reason to laugh. That’s still the case with Peacock’s reunion movie “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.” And yet, there’s something surprisingly dark about the state of obsessive-compulsive detective Adrian Monk when we catch up with him, post-pandemic.
“At this point we find Monk is really in a in a dark, dark place,” star Tony Shalhoub tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “He’s in a deep hole. His team is not really close by and he’s kind of lost his purpose. And (exec producer) Andy (Breckman) presented this idea that Monk was entertaining thoughts of suicide. It hit us hard in the beginning. We thought, ‘geez, we’ve gone dark in the show before, but not this dark!'”

Given its warm critical reception and past PGA and SAG Award notices, it makes sense that “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” has maintained a massive lead over its Best TV Movie competitors ever since we opened our 2024 Emmys predictions center. However, because the original “Monk” was never even nominated for Best Comedy Series during its eight-season run, the one-off Peacock continuation can’t exactly be considered a shoo-in. In truth, it faces quite a few strong challengers, including the laugh-packed Netflix offering “Unfrosted.”
Hours before its May 3 premiere, “Unfrosted” rose above its 100/1 Gold Derby odds and pulled ahead of both “Finestkind” and “Genie” to become this year’s seventh most likely TV movie nominee. Its next immediate challenge is passing sixth place runner “Scoop” (also from Netflix), which is currently a predicted nominee among our editors and experts.
Limited series acting hopefuls Nicole Kidman (“Expats”) and Johnny Flynn (“Ripley”) also recently improved upon their 100/1 odds,...

AMC Networks’ plans to submit the zombie spinoff “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” as a limited series for the Emmys have been killed.
The cable network had announced plans to submit the six-episode spinoff, created by Scott M. Gimple, Danai Gurira, and Andrew Lincoln, for outstanding limited or anthology series at the Primetime Emmys. However, Variety has learned exclusively from two sources with direct knowledge that the show is ineligible to submit in the category.
In 2021, the Television Academy defined what constitutes a limited or anthology series, stating that the story must be resolved within its season without any ongoing storylines. This criteria affected past winners, such as the second season of “The White Lotus,” which was required to compete as a drama due to Jennifer Coolidge’s recurring character. According to the Academy’s ruling at the time, “the reappearance in a subsequent ‘season’ of one character...
