Two of the most unsung heroes in action movies face-off in this 2006 martial arts thriller, which has now found success thanks to free streaming. Led by B-movie icons Michael Jai White and Scott Adkins, Undisputed II: Last Man Standing finds the pair of highly skilled fighters throwing down in the ring after White’s champion boxer is framed and sent to a sketchy Russian prison...where he is forced to right for his life against Adkins’ formidable psychopathic gang leader, Yuri Boyka.

Directed by Isaac Florentine and starring Michael Jai White, Scott Adkins, Eli Danker and Ben Cross, Undisputed II: Last Man Standing has become an action movie fan-favorite since being released direct-to-video almost two decades ago, and boasts a knockout score of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter. Tubi has been stepping up their game with horror originals in recent years, with films including Slay, Killer Body Count and Lowlifes all being worth your time. And the free streaming service is kicking off the new year with another fresh Tubi original horror movie that’s worth a watch, with the home invasion horror-comedy Don’t Mess With Grandma now streaming.

Don’t Mess With Grandma premiered at Fright Fest last year, and Bloody Disgusting’s own Trace Thurman called it “another solid product from the consistently surprising Tubi.”

Trace’s review continued, “Leaning into heartfelt sincerity, hilariously awkward confrontations and plenty of violence, [it’s] an enjoyable crowd-pleaser that’s sure to earn plenty of laughs.”

From director Jason Krawczyk (He Never Died), Don’t Mess With Grandma slashes into home invasion tropes with a subversive sense of humor, with the cast including Michael Jai White, Jackie Richardson, Billy Zane, Miles Faber, and Ess Hödlmoser.

Ten years ago, writer/director Jason Krawczyk brought the world the horror comedy He Never Died, which introduced viewers to a badass immortal character named Jack (played by Henry Rollins), who had been around for thousands of years. The follow-ups planned for that film haven’t made it into production, but now, Krawczyk is back with the action comedy Don’t Mess with Grandma (which was filmed under the title Sunset Superman), starring Michael Jai White. I had the chance to watch the movie several months ago and had a lot of fun with it (you can read my 8/10 review at This Link), and a larger audience will have the opportunity to enjoy it when it reaches the free streaming service Tubi on January 24th!

Jason Krawczyks last directorial effort is 2015's punchy "bullets, blood, and Bingo" flick He Never Died. His comeback project, the Tubi original Don't Mess With Grandma (aka Sunset Superman), hopes to channel the same indie action gumption. It's a home invasion action-comedy starring the indomitable Michael Jai White, who exudes his typical kick-ass charms as he defends a helpless old lady. Humor exists in the form of bumbling crooks meeting their musclebound match, but overall execution lacks energy, and consistency withers. Corny cuteness becomes the film's calling card as Jai White womps baddies between sympathetic senior caretaking which is never as entertaining as that sentence sounds.

It sounds like Tubi has their hands on an action-comedy gem, as Black Dynamite and Blood and Bone star Michael Jai White returns to the genre in Dont Mess With Grandma. The movie has now debuted at Fantastic Fest and the first reviews hail Dont Mess With Grandma (which was formerly titled Sunset Superman) as the perfect twist on the home invasion movie, with White proving once again that he is the unsung hero of action movies.

Krawczyk may not be fond of the title Dont Mess with Grandma, but if all goes well, this is a title well be hearing action and comedy fans mention frequently in the future, because the movie is a blast to watch and deserves to be referenced and recommended.

According to online trivia, the action comedy thriller Don’t Mess with Grandma (which Krawczyk wrote and directed under his preferred title of Sunset Superman) is a project that grew out of the filmmaker’s frustration over the He Never Died franchise not gaining traction.

Home invasion films are a dime a dozen nowadays, with this year alone seeing the wide releases of The Strangers: Chapter One and Abigail. But surplus can often breed creativity, with filmmakers forced to seek innovative ways to make their films stand out from the pack. Theaters will need wider screens because two action icons built like trucks, Dolph Lundgren and Michael Jai White, are teaming up for Fight or Flight, an upcoming action thriller. Shane Dax Taylor directs the assassins-in-action film project, and Charlotte Kirk joins the lead cast. Fight or Flight is going to Cannes. Archstone represents international sales, while Saban holds the North American rights.
