The beloved “Star Wars” sequel “The Empire Strikes Back” is set to open this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival on April 24, with director George Lucas presenting the film for its 45th anniversary.
“’The Empire Strikes Back’ is like ‘The Godfather Part II.’ Yes, technically, they’re sequels, the second movie in a series. But they are so much more,” TCM’s primetime anchor Ben Mankiewicz said in a statement. “The first ‘Star Wars’ picture in 1977 ignited a new era in Hollywood and turned a generation of young people into passionate movie fans for life. Then, somehow, three years later, along comes ‘Empire,’ which might even be better. It’s a stunning accomplishment and surely stands one of the great achievements in the history of film.”
Additional titles that will screen at this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival include “The Fabulous Baker Boys,” “The Lady Eve,” “Cinderella,” “Apocalypse Now,...

The Oscars want more Conan!
After a rapturous reception at this year’s Academy Awards, emcee Conan O’Brien will return to the Dolby Theatre for the 98th Oscars on March 15, 2026.
The announcement comes from Bill Kramer, Academy CEO, and Janet Yang, Academy president, who also confirmed the return of the Emmy-winning producing team Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan, who will lead the show for the third consecutive year.
Using his signature humor, O’Brien quipped in a statement: “The only reason I’m hosting the Oscars next year is that I want to hear Adrien Brody finish his speech.”
Brody’s best actor speech for “The Brutalist” clocked in as the longest in the ceremony’s history.
“We are thrilled to bring back Conan, Raj, Katy, Jeff and Mike for the 98th Oscars!” Kramer and Yang said in a joint statement. “This year, they produced a hugely entertaining and visually...

"The Simpsons" is one of America's finest institutions -- and nowadays, one of its most reliable. Even after 36 seasons, the longest-running primetime television series continues to produce timeless half-hour episodes (and the occasional hour-long special) that show why it deserves to still be around after so long.
Of course, there is always the "this show used to be better in the '90s" crowd that can't dare to imagine newer episodes being anything but garbage. Still, they have a point. The earlier seasons of "The Simpsons" were not just meticulously written and impeccably timed, but they have great animation and phenomenal character writing. It's why, despite there still being one modern episode, our list of the best "Simpsons" episodes ever is mostly comprised of episodes from seasons 4 to 6.
Among the best episodes, one common element that pops up a lot in that list (at least in the episode credits) is the name Conan O'Brien,...

Before the Oscars’ dust has completely settled, first-time host Conan O’Brien dished behind-the-scenes secrets from the March 2 telecast on a new episode of his SiriusXM podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.
“People seemed very happy with how it went,” O’Brien stated at the top of the Oscars recap podcast, which replaced a typical fan interaction episode in the weekly slot. “I had a blast doing it, and one of the reasons I think I was able to enjoy myself so much is I knew we worked very hard to get material that we liked.”
Joined by his head writer and creative collaborator of 30 years, Mike Sweeney, O’Brien recapped that hard work by detailing the sketches that got cut, the Academy’s notes that blew his mind and what he’ll miss most. Below are highlights from the episode.

Conan O’Brien kicked off the Oscars with a bang, opening his hosting debut with a monologue that poked fun at the films and stars nominated at Hollywood’s biggest night.
Before the jokes, in a pre-taped segment, O’Brien emerged from the back of Demi Moore’s body à la “The Substance” and crawled out, not necessarily younger or hotter, but at least in a tuxedo.
“Hi, Demi. How are you?” O’Brien said when he walked onto the Dolby Theatre stage. “That was weird. Yeah, awkward. I’m missing some car keys.”
“Welcome to the 97th Academy Awards,” O’Brien went on. “It’s Hollywood’s biggest night that starts at four in the afternoon. Everyone here just had brunch — I don’t understand it.”
The host then addressed the elephant in the room: the controversy that erupted over “Emilia Pérez” star Karla Sofía Gascón’s offensive social media posts.

As Conan O’Brien prepares to host the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, the actor and comedian revealed that he’s connected with previous hosts Billy Crystal and Jimmy Kimmel, as well as the event’s executive producer Molly McNearney.
“I have a nice text exchange with Billy Crystal, who’s obviously the all-time great,” the comedian told People on Wednesday. “And last week I had dinner with Molly and Jimmy. They were terrific [and] have so much great advice… It’s like people that have driven the racetrack many times and they’re telling me, ‘When you get into the third turn, there’s a huge pothole, so veer to the left.’ It’s invaluable stuff.”
Despite previously emceeing the Emmys and White House Correspondents Dinner, O’Brien emphasized that there’s “no such thing as getting to a point professionally where there are no nerves if you’re working in comedy.

Back in 1993, Conan O’Brien’s career seemed like it might end before it really even began when NBC nearly canceled his fledging 12:30 am talk show, convinced they’d made a mistake by handing over David Letterman’s desk to an unknown comedy writer barely out of his twenties. But they kept him on the air and O’Brien found his comedic voice along with a mass audience. Today, he’s a beloved elder statesman with a hit podcast, a brilliant new travel show, and an upcoming stint as the host of the Academy Awards.

2024 gave late-night TV fans a lot to appreciate. The election year provided monologues and sketches with plenty of material. Add hundreds more celebrity interviews, musical performances, and content outside of TV, and it was an amazing year. But 2025 will be better.
In many ways, 2024 didn't turn out the way a lot of people in late-night TV would have hoped. The election will completely change how hosts like Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert approach 2025.
It was also a year of change over at Saturday Night Live. Speculation followed Lorne Michaels, but the SNL creator has no plans to retire. Cast changes and behind-the-scenes drama kept things exciting. And like the rest of late-night, SNL has big things planned for 2025.
It's just one part of what should be an incredible, and hilarious, year. Here's what late-night TV audiences have to look forward to in 2025.

If you’ve seen Conan O’Brien Must Go, then you know that the comedian often puts himself in uncomfortable situations. This time around he decided to challenge himself by fronting Cringe Blizzard, who self-describe themselves as “fresh ‘n icy slush metal from Austria.”
A local news outlet captured video of Conan’s performance (see below), where he shares the stage with Cringe Blizzard’s frontwoman Katharina, who had invited Conan to come to Austria earlier this year during an appearance on his podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.
In the video, Conan holds his own alongside Katharina, letting out a few vicious screams along the way.

On Sunday night, during the finale of “The Penguin,” Max released one of those biannual teasers previewing the service’s upcoming programming that serves as a periodic reminder that HBO is the best in the business. Max’s 2025 is packed with a lot of exciting new and returning shows, and the spot shows off new footage from many of them, from the prequel series “It: Welcome to Derry” to Emmy-winner “Hacks” Season 4.
Among the returning series previewed in the spot, there are first looks at “Hacks” Season 4, featuring Deborah (Jean Smart) getting in Ava’s (Hannah Einbinder) face and sarcastically calling her a “big, brave girl,” to which Ava coolly replies “I guess I am;” “The White Lotus” Season 3, which features Walton Goggins admiring a huge gold Buddha statue and the return of Natasha Rothwell’s Season 1 character Belinda; and “The Righteous Gemstones” Season 4, which features John Goodman with a long,...

Gold Derby recently conducted a poll asking our readers to name their dream Oscar host for the upcoming 2025 ceremony, and the winner is — drumroll, please — Hugh Jackman! The Australian performer is having a banner year thanks to his movie “Deadpool and Wolverine” dominating the box office, and longtime Oscar viewers still fondly remember when he hosted the 2009 ceremony to great acclaim (watch a clip below).
As it turns out, Jackman is very much “in the mix” to serve as this year’s host alongside his superhero counterpart Ryan Reynolds. As our sister site Deadline reports, “The plan we hear would be to include them as part of a star ensemble of rotating hosts, each — or in pairs — doing a portion of the show, per a plan to shake things up.”

Conan O’Brien‘s fun Max series “Conan O’Brien Must Go” follows the comedian and talk show host as he travels the world meeting new friends and experiencing exotic cultures. Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 2, as that’s when the 97th Academy Awards will air on ABC. A master of ceremonies has yet to be named for the annual trophy gala, so now is the perfect time to predict who might be tapped to host by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Remember, four-time emcee Jimmy Kimmel has decided to take a break this year, and comedian John Mulaney has also reportedly removed his name from contention. So who should host the 2025 Oscars? Vote in our poll below.
Obviously, one of the most important factors for the academy to consider when choosing an Oscar host would be their popularity. Who is famous enough to bring lots and lots of eyeballs to the ceremony and help sell those all-important ad dollars? And since the Academy Awards are broadcast in dozens of countries, it would help for that person to be famous worldwide.

The TV years are just flying by at this point. For some of us, it feels like only yesterday we were watching Succession take home precisely every award at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. For others, yesterday might as well have been the airing of the Red Wedding on Game of Thrones. And for some incomprehensibly ancient creatures, we … I mean they fondly recall watching the Lost finale in their college dorm. The point is that things move fast on television. If you don’t slow down for a minute, you might miss all of it.
So let’s slow down to appreciate the best TV has had to offer in 2024 so far. From stunning new miniseries dramas like FX’s Shōgun to unexpected animated delights like Disney+’s X-Men ‘97 to reliable comedies like Max’s Hacks, there was plenty to love this year. To be eligible, a show...

Never underestimate the power of Conan O’Brien’s fanbase. The former late-night host has made it his mission to help a Norwegian fan have a hit song in Norway—and his efforts appear to be paying off.
It was just last week that Norwegian rap duo E.D.A. released “Velkommen Til Klubben” (aka “Welcome to the Party”), featuring a verse by O’Brien.
E.D.A—consisting of Dilettant (Jarle Hjellvik Wallevik) and Ola B (Chris Wallevik)—were featured on the first episode of the new Max series Conan O’Brien Must Go, which sees O’Brien make a surprise visit to Jarle Hjellvik Wallevik’s home in Norway.
In the episode, Conan goes to the studio with E.D.A. and performs an improvised bridge to the song.

Few documentaries have been as genuinely shocking as director Andrew Jarecki’s 2015 true crime documentary series “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.” Using existing media, reenactments and exclusive interview footage of Durst, who had agreed to be interviewed by Jarecki, the six-episode series investigated three unsolved murders in which Durst had been a suspect. It was a captivating spectacle that became a game-changing piece of art when, the day before the series finale aired on HBO, Durst was arrested for first-degree murder after being caught on a recording stating, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”
Nearly a decade after winning the Emmy for Best Documentary or Nonfiction Series, Jarecki is back with “The Jinx — Part Two.” Premiering Sunday at 10/9c, the HBO series details the events of the next eight years, during which time Durst was tried and convicted of the murder...

The key to understanding Conan O’Brien’s comedy is knowing that it comes from a point of kindness. Yes, I know in this age of comics punching down, this kind of compliment may leave you with a neon “Must Avoid!” sign flashing in your bleary eyes — but stay with me.
Here is an example. Early in the first episode of his new, four-episode Max travel show “Conan O’Brien Must Go,” Conan — who has earned the right to be referred to by his first name. See: Carson, Johnny — travels to Oslo, Norway. There, he pops in on Jarle, a Norwegian waif of a rapper that Conan had originally met on a segment of his “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast. In the podcast video, Jarle’s hair was combed and he seemed coherent. Then Conan surprises him. Jarle comes to the door, and he’s maybe 110 pounds in a long sleeve T-shirt,...

Late-night talk shows were like home when I was a teenager. Social anxieties could disappear, bullies were non-existent, and the humorous, non-consequential words of the hosts would calm me down after a stressful day at school. The comedians who took over TV after 11:35 Pm welcomed me into a universe I belonged to, a complete contrast from the social outcasting I felt in the classroom walls. I could live vicariously through their jokes and joyful scenarios in which the audience cheered and clapped, and nobody’s confidence was shattered by a lousy joke.
Along with Craig Ferguson, Conan O’Brien was a nightly weekday highlight. Conan’s spastic impressions and self-deprecating pokes were a warm fire in front of the TV, a silly distraction for me and so many of his viewers who loved to gather around his aura every night on NBC and then TBS at the dawn of the decade.

Max’s Conan O’Brien Must Go is a travel show with a twist.
“My mission is that you learn nothing about the country,” O’Brien explained on a spectacular recent installment of the Hot Ones web series, an appearance that I’m confident did more to boost the visibility of Conan O’Brien Must Go than the dozens of marketing dollars Warner Bros. surely put into the series. “My job is that you know less about the country after I’m done than when I started.”
While O’Brien’s performance on Hot Ones — especially after pronouncing that he’d never encountered a spice until his 50s — may have surprised some observers, few of the late night veteran’s devotees will be surprised that his assessment of Conan O’Brien Must Go is disingenuous. Or at least it’s a hair disingenuous. Conan O’Brien Must Go isn’t the sort of travel...

If you still forget to drop the “HBO” when talking about Max, take comfort in the fact that Conan O’Brien is in the same boat.
Appearing on an episode of “Hot Ones” to promote his new Max travel show “Conan O’Brien Must Go,” the late night TV legend poked some fun at his employer’s decision to rebrand the flagship Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service after years of calling it HBO Max.
“Is it HBO Max or just Max? I can’t get used to it,” O’Brien said early in his appearance on the chicken wing-centric talk show. “It’s not a better name.”
As the episode progressed — and O’Brien’s tastebuds were subjected to more pain — the comedian became more vocal about his disdain for the rebranding. By the end, he was comically shouting about how he preferred the name HBO.

Conan O’Brien appeared on CNN for an interview with Jake Tapper a few hours after news broke that O.J. Simpson had died. Making the press rounds in support of his new Max series “Conan O’Brien Must Go,” the comedian and former late-night host quipped “I never make a joke about someone the day they passed.” But O’Brien did reflect on the time when late-night shows had to cover O.J. Simpson’s murder trial.
“It was a huge deal back then. Most notably, he’s passed on, but Norm Macdonald,” O’Brien said. “One of my best guests of all time and one of the great comedians of all time. He did the most brilliant comedy of anybody during that period.”
