Many of the on-stage discussions in Series Mania have reflected a TV industry facing numerous stresses and strains and in the midst of a painful transition — especially from the execs based in the U.K. On Thursday, it was the turn of Ruth Berry, ITV Studios president of global partnerships and its new digital entertainment platform Zoo 55.
“What we saw last year was a perfect storm of macroeconomic challenges that were causing people to think about what they were programming, who their key audience was, who the key advertisers they needed to attract to their broadcast business,” she said, speaking on stage in Lille.
But Berry pointed to ITV Studios shows such as “Fool Me Once,” “Ludwig,” “Until I Kill You,” “After the Flood” and “Mr Bates Vs the Post Office” — which this morning landed six BAFTA nominations — as proof that the business was still experiencing “creative success” and was in “rude health.

Jane Millichip, CEO of BAFTA, has expressed confidence in the resilience of British television despite recent industry challenges, describing the creative and craft quality of U.K. TV as being at “the highest it’s ever been.”
Speaking after the announcement of the BAFTA TV and Craft nominations, which saw Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” leading with eight nods, Millichip addressed concerns about what some have labeled a crisis in British television production, especially in the scripted space.
“Notwithstanding the fact that we’ve had a tough market for the last year or so, this year’s nominees show that creatively and craft wise, British TV is in rude health,” Millichip told Variety. “The quality of the nominations is extraordinary, and a lot of brilliant TV didn’t get nominated. We have 134 nominated programs out of just over 600 programs entered.”

BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip, the former Sky Studios chief content officer and chief commercial officer, says Thursday’s nominations for the 2025 BAFTA Television Awards reflect the health and strength of the U.K. TV industry’s creative output.
“The British TV sector is in rude health, creatively and in terms of craft production quality,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The range of the styles and genres and the depth of the quality is really on display here. And we have quite a lot of first-time nominees, particularly in the performing categories, which is really refreshing. Almost half the [contenders in the] performing categories are first-time nominees, including some surprising names, such as Jonathan Pryce and Danny Dyer.”

The Oscars are over. The Golden Globes have all been handed out. And the BAFTAs are but a swiftly fading, "Did David Tennant really sing 500 Miles with James McAvoy and Anna Kendrick?" memory now. But the BAFTA TV awards are very much still on the horizon, and as the celebration of the small screen gears up for its 11 May telecast, today we've learned who the nominees are that'll be vying for those precious golden statues. Leading the way with a solid eight nominations is Richard Gadd's Netflix stalker drama Baby Reindeer, while racy Disney+ show Rivals, Apple TV+ Slough House spies joint Slow Horses, and ITV's incendiary Mr Bates Vs The Post Office all follow close behind with an impressive six nominations each.

ITV bosses faced numerous sale rumor questions this morning but didn’t budge on the speculation, while content boss Kevin Lygo revealed only one drama is stuck in the funding limbo instigated by the American co-pro drop-off.
Reuters recently reported that ITV is in talks over merging production arm ITV Studios with RedBird Imi’s All3Media, which lit a fire under the media industry. Unsurprisingly CEO Carolyn McCall faced numerous questions during its annual results call about the rumors as the broadcaster revealed a mixed results picture including record profits for the production arm.

The London TV Screenings, or London Screenings for short, the global TV industry event running Feb. 23-28, is ready for its close-up. The once low-key affair, where networks and sales outfits screen their latest shows for international buyers, has grown to can’t-miss status over the years. 2025 will be London Screenings’ time to shine, particularly without any competition from the now-defunct Mip TV.
That said, Mip will be holding its own inaugural Mip London event during the week, featuring panel discussions on industry trends, hot new properties from the likes of South Korea and Japan, as well as a session with David Beckham and Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria.
The London Screenings come at an inflection point for the global TV industry. After a sustained boom in high-end drama, networks, and streamers are again cutting costs and betting more on lower-cost non-fiction and reality shows. In the fiction arena,...

Exclusive: Peter Kosminsky, the BAFTA-winning television director and writer, has claimed that the funding emergency for British dramas is the “greatest crisis we’ve ever faced in my working lifetime.”
In an exclusive interview with Deadline, the Wolf Hall director claimed that the industry is in danger of self-censoring provocative, public-interest series because of the risk that they won’t secure the necessary finance to enter production.
The funding crisis is dominating discussions in the UK scripted community, as executives lament a perfect storm of issues, including U.S. streamers pulling back from co-production, shrinking international sales advances, persistent inflation, ad revenue declines, and BBC funding cuts.

ITV has officially announced its drama about the U.K.’s phone-hacking scandal and investigation, a seven-part series now entitled “The Hack” and written by multi award-winner Jack Thorne.
The unveiling of the first look from “The Hack” — which shot last year — comes just a week after the hacking controversy concerning Rupert Murdoch’s U.K. tabloids reached a new peak, with his News Group Newspapers making a historic apology to Prince Harry and agreeing to pay substantial damages.
David Tennant — who himself accepted damages from Ngn over a phone-hacking claim against the now-defunct News of the World — plays Nick Davies, the investigative journalist who uncovered evidence of hacking. Toby Jones plays his former editor-in-chief at The Guardian newspaper, Alan Rusbridger, while — in a story running parallel to the hacking expose — Robert Carlyle plays former Met Police detective chief superintendent Dave Cook, who led an investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan.

Exclusive: The timing couldn’t be better. Just a week after Rupert Murdoch’s shock apology and settlement with Prince Harry, ITV has unveiled a phone hacking drama series from Jack Thorne starring David Tennant as investigative journalist Nick Davies.
ITV and Australian streamer Stan have spent the past year quietly filming, editing and laying the groundwork for The Hack, which comes from the storied creative trio of multi-bafta Award winner Thorne, director Lewis Arnold (Sherwood) and producer Patrick Spence (Mr Bates vs the Post Office).
Set between 2002 and 2012, The Hack interweaves two real life stories, the work of Davies, who uncovered evidence of phone hacking at Murdoch’s now-defunct News of the World, and the story of the investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, led by former Met Police Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook. Its working titles through the past year have included Broken News and Mandrake.

The BBC and Netflix have garnered the most nods at the upcoming Royal Television Society (Rts) Craft & Design Awards with 31 and 16 nominations respectively.
BBC series “Lost Boys & Fairies” led the way with four nominations while Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” garnered three.
Other Netflix shows to be nominated including the recently-canceled mythological series “Kaos” and the adaptation of David Nicholls’ “One Day.”
The ceremony will take place on Dec. 2 at the London Hilton.
“On joining this year as chair of the awards I was extremely confident that the calibre of entries would be high,” said Emma Gormley, chair of the Rts Craft & Design Awards. “However, the submissions we subsequently received have exceeded all expectations, further demonstrating how U.K. creatives are global leaders in the television and streaming space. The nominations we have announced today highlight the incredible range of diverse, genre-defining content that is being created by U.K.

British broadcast group ITV delivered a mixed financial performance for the first six months of 2024, as it continues to navigate a shifting media landscape.
ITV reported a significant 40% increase in adjusted Ebita to £213 million ($275 million) for the period ending June 30, 2024. This substantial growth came despite a 2% decline in group external revenue, which fell to £1.6 billion ($2.06 billion).
The company’s production arm, ITV Studios, experienced a 13% decrease in revenue to £869 million. This decline was largely attributed to the lingering effects of the 2023 U.S. writers’ and actors’ strikes, which caused delays in production schedules and delivery of content. Profits before tax increased 51% to £178 million.
On a more positive note, ITV’s Media & Entertainment division showed encouraging growth. Total advertising revenue increased by 10% to £889 million, with digital advertising revenue demonstrating particularly strong performance, with a 17% surge.
A bright spot in ITV’s results was the continued success of its streaming service, Itvx.

Toby Jones, Lisa Vicari and Christiane Paul are set to join season two of Apple TV+’s Hijack, produced by and starring Idris Elbra.
Since its debut, Hijack has become one of Apple TV+’s top dramas. Details on the story for season two are being kept under wraps, but Elba will reprise his role as Sam Nelson — a corporate negotiator who in the first season used his skills to bring about a resolution to the hijacking of a flight on which he was a passenger.
Hijack, which concluded its seven-episode first season in August, drew solid viewership for Apple TV+, becoming the second series on the platform (after Ted Lasso) to earn a spot on Nielsen’s weekly top 10 streaming chart. Reviews were generally favorable as well, with The Hollywood Reporter‘s TV critic Angie Han noting that co-creators George Kay and Jim Field Smith “keep the tension at a delicious thrum.

Netflix UK will not be changing its commissioning course when the streamer stops reporting quarterly subs numbers, according to its programing chief.
Anne Mensah, who oversees a huge slate featuring the likes of Baby Reindeer and The Gentlemen, said “there is no secret” for producers when they pitch to Netflix, and that this will remain the same given the streamer’s fresh focus on profit over subs.
“I can’t stress enough that [our commissioning strategy] is simply about how you get audiences to press play and stay,” she told the Creative Cities Convention in response to a question over Netflix’s decision to stop reporting quarterly subs numbers from next year.
“Before I arrived the idea was how to put in place a team that is authentically ‘of the UK’ and show you have absolute commitment to staying here long term,” she added. “For me the content remains utterly key.”

An acute sense of instability will inform much of the content bought and sold on the MipTV floor, though the symptoms might manifest themselves beyond doom and gloom. Somewhat unsurprisingly, given an unrelenting remit of climate anxieties and global unrest, this tendency has left no genre untouched.
“Obviously the world in which we live is quite dramatic at the moment, and that has created an appetite for stories that offer solutions,” explains international distribution expert Beatrice Rossmanith. As head of global business for consulting firm Glance Ltd (formerly known as Tape Consultancy), Rossmanith monitors content across hundreds of channels in 45 territories worldwide. And lately she has noticed a pervasive trend.
“There’s obviously a thirst for truth nowadays,” Rossmanith says. “[And a thirst] to tackle modern anxieties by asking what more can we do?”

Exclusive: The production outfit behind Netflix’s Prince Andrew feature Scoop is working with Sarah Lancashire on an “ambitious, contemporary returning series” that Lancashire will star in.
Lighthouse Film & Television is teaming with Lancashire’s recently launched Via Pictures on the show, we can reveal, which Lighthouse co-founder Radford Neville teased is a “research heavy project inspired by real characters.”
Conversations with networks have already begun and Lancashire will star, contradicting reports that emerged earlier this week that she has retired from acting.
Lancashire launched Via Pictures with husband and former BBC and Banijay UK boss Peter Salmon last year upon the conclusion of Happy Valley, one of the corporation’s biggest dramas of the past decade.
“When we set up Lighthouse in 2019 we talked to Sarah about developing something specifically for her,” added Neville. “In the interim she has set up Via and towards the end of last year...
