With the upcoming release of Warfare, Alex Garland is once again poised to make waves within the film industry. Thus far, the war movie has received stellar praise thanks to a recent, early showing.
For those unfamiliar, Garland is renowned for his amazing screenplays, which include Dredd, Sunshine, Never Let Me Go, and 28 Days Later. He also steps behind the camera occasionally, having directed Ex Machina, Annihilation, Men, and the more recent, Civil War.
Garland is now back behind the director's chair for Warfare, which was co-written and directed by Ray Mendoza, a former Iraq War Navy Seal.

If acclaimed writer/director Alex Garland is going to make a war movie these days, you can safely bet that it'll turn out to be one of the most intense and visceral experiences of the year. He accomplished exactly that with last year's "Civil War," A24's terrifying drama starring Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny, and he's now set to go two for two with 2025's upcoming "Warfare." Co-directed and co-written by Iraq War combat veteran Ray Mendoza, this film's unique twist isn't that it's based on some original concept of a war-torn United States that only feels slightly more heightened than our present one -- instead, it has been marketed heavily as a largely one-location thriller taken straight out of the memories of various individuals involved in this very real mission gone horribly awry back in 2006.

If you are an avid gamer, I’d like for you to imagine a game that is a combination of Control, Dark Souls, and Death Stranding, and you would have something that looks like the upcoming video game title, Hell is Us. Scheduled to release later this year, this sci-fi horror title takes a lot of influence from one of Natalie Portman’s weirdest movies released back in 2018.
Hell is Us is an upcoming sci-fi game | Rogue Factory
The upcoming game is one of those rare gems that truly dive headfirst into finding out how much you can push the limits of the mind-bending sci-fi genre. Once it’s finally out, it might take you some time to wrap your head around the storyline and mechanics, but it won’t take long before you are hooked on the game.

Exclusive: Portishead co-founder Geoff Barrow has just wrapped his first feature film dubbed Game, which he co-wrote and produced via Invada Films, the newly launched arm of his Bristol-based Invada Records. Here we’ve got an exclusive first-look image from the film.
The thriller, which stars Marc Bessant and Jason Williamson and is the directorial debut of filmmaker John Minton, is set against the backdrop of the 1990s rave culture where two men – one a thief and one a poacher – must use their wits to survive.
It’s an idea that originated through a conversation between Barrow and Bessant, who then brought Minton and Rob Williams aboard to help with writing the story. Williams wrote the final screenplay.
The project was shot in and around Bristol in the UK and is now in post-production.

Starring the talented Natalie Portman in its titular role, Annihilationmade its theatrical release on February 23, 2018. After its long stint on Netflix, Annihilation will now receive the axe in international markets this March as a part of the streamer's ongoing content reshuffling efforts. The streaming giant frequently rotates its catalog due to licensing agreements and cost-cutting measures, a practice that has time and time again left subscribers frustrated.
Directed by Alex Garland, the name behind Ex Machina (2014), Annihilation is an adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer's novel of the same name and was produced by Scott Rudin, Eli Bush, and Andrew Macdonald. With its ambitious narrative, stunning visuals, and thought-provoking themes, Annihilation was widely successful on the streamer, earning itself a cult following. The film went on to receive critical acclaim and, despite not being a major commercial success, was soon cemented as one of the best original sci-fi horror films of the decade.

I run a lot of tabletop RPGs, but due to my friends’ availability they’re often one shots. While I would love to have more ongoing campaigns, this does allow me to sample as many systems as possible with the times we can find. That said, there is one game that I’ve been able to run multiple full-length campaigns of, and that’s Heart: The City Beneath by Grant Howitt and Christopher Taylor. Its amazing combination of fiction-forward mechanics and fiendishly clever world building makes it my favorite RPG I’ve played.
When publisher Rowan Rook and Decard announced they were going to be publishing their first campaign book for the system, I knew I’d be backing it immediately as the crowdfunding page went live. Now that the book, Dagger in the Heart by Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan, is in my hands, I’m happy to say it’s a...

What do T.S. Eliot, Annihilation, and romantic undead tales have in common? Scott Derrickson’s The Gorge. A threatening brand of military meet-cute makes for any genre fan’s Valentine’s Day treat—more love stories should have feral creatures and desperate stakes. Derrickson’s vision for Zach Dean’s multifaceted screenplay brings supernatural desolation and warm smiles in equal scoops, although the two-hour-plus duration is challenging. It’s a film with lofty ambitions meant to excite, scare, and woo that succeeds across the board, but a balancing act that honors all intentions can feel wobbly.

The Black Phone and Sinister director Scott Derrickson gets into the Valentine’s Day spirit with his latest, The Gorge, a romantic action thriller that also leans heavily into horror and sci-fi. Derrickson helms this genre mashup with lean efficiency, letting stars Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy do the heavy lifting as a pair of highly trained operatives turned lovers tasked with guarding the world against a strange threat. The leads’ inherent charm and screen presence and an inventive foray into thrilling action-horror territory sand some of The Gorge‘s rougher edges, making for a fun and romantic ride.

I genuinely love movies about elite soldiers facing off against horrors beyond human comprehension. The sight of watching a warrior’s arrogance and bravery, which comes from their ability to wield the latest cutting-edge weapon, evaporates as they come to the realization that their primitive ways of warfare are of no use is oddly satisfying. I suppose Aliens is responsible for this obsession, immediately followed by the evergreen classic that is Predator. Dog Soldiers is really underrated and should get a lot more mainstream attention. I didn’t initially like Annihilation, but upon a rewatch, I admired what it was going for. I fell in love with Overlord almost instantly. I’m not sure if it counts, but I’ll give a shoutout to Underwater. Also, Love, Death & Robots’ shorts set in this subgenre, The Secret War, Sucker of Souls, Kill Team Kill, and In Vaulted Halls Entombed, are incredibly rewatchable.

When science-fiction and horror overlap, there is running and screaming, the towns people grab pitchforks and torches and the very idea of what it means to be human is called into question. At least, that’s what happens in some of the best movies that dip into both genres.
The age-old question of where the ethical line is in science and whether it should be crossed never ceases to generate new terrors as technology continues to develop. Killer cyborgs and androids? Out-of-control genetic mutation? Radiation-spawned monsters? All of these have have fueled some of our favorite sci-fi horror films.

The 2012 comic book adaptation Dredd has become a streaming hit on Max. As more people revisited the film or experienced it for the first time, it moved up from the #8 spot on the top 10 movies list to #3. Karl Urban stars as the titular character in the film, which takes place in the violent and crime-ridden Mega City One. Cops called Judges, who serve as judges, juries, and executioners, patrol the streets and deliver brutal justice.
Urban's Dredd and his rookie psychic partner Cassandra (Olivia Thirlby) enter the dangerous territory of powerful drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), with a power struggle ensuing and the two Judges trapped in an apartment complex filled with hardened criminals. In the vein of the Indonesian action film The Raid: Redemption, Dredd traps its characters and creates tension in the confined environment with thrilling action sequences.

Annihilation released in 2018 with only a brief run in theaters. Despite earning positive reviews, the film did poorly at the box office and has continued to be overlooked by audiences ever since. Starring Natalie Portman, the sci-fi movie blended elements of action films, thrillers, and horror, along with hauntingly beautiful and bizarre visuals to produce a unique experience that deserves more attention than it received. Fans who were fortunate enough to check it out were likely struck by its brilliant writing and performances, as well as its message about illness and grief.
Sickness, death, and coping with loss are all explored in Annihilation through an approach that is simultaneously sad, terrifying, and comforting. There is something undeniably strange about what happens to people in a committed relationship. It's easy for some form of co-dependency to crop up, and it's troubling to find your sense of self become so mutable. For those of us watching two people become a couple, it can feel like watching some kind of transformation slowly occur; the person you used to know starts dressing and acting differently, and in some extreme cases, may even begin thinking differently. Although even the healthiest long-term relationship involves some version of codependency, it's more likely that it happens so gradually and imperceptibly that no one may notice it. However, what if that dependency were to be externalized? What if, for instance, the craving and need you may have to be with your person weren't just an emotional one, but a physical one?
That's essentially the premise of "Together," a new body horror comedy...

So, you survived The Substance. Congrats! But if your brain’s still buzzing with its trippy visuals and squirm-worthy themes of transformation, you’re probably itching for more horror that messes with your head—and maybe your stomach. Body horror is all about taking the human form and saying, “What if we… didn’t?” And when you add female leads, vibrant aesthetics, and stories packed with emotional (and sometimes literal) guts, the result is an unforgettable lineup of films that are as smart as they are …squishy.
But let’s get one thing straight—not every movie on this list is straight-up body horror. Some lean more into psychological horror, others tackle themes of identity and empowerment, and a few just want to paint the walls red. What they all have in common? Bold female protagonists, jaw-dropping visuals, and transformations that’ll leave you squirming in the best way possible.

Warfare's release date has been announced by A24, and it means that Alex Garland's new movie could repeat Civil War's success. After Ex Machina, Annihilation, Men, and Civil War, Garland co-wrote and co-directed his next project alongside Ray Mendoza, and the film is based on the former's experiences during the Iraq War, following a platoon of Navy SEALs on a mission through insurgent territory in 2006. The cast includes D'Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai, Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henrique Zaga, Joseph Quinn, and Charles Melton.
Per Deadline, A24 has set a nationwide theatrical release for Warfare on April 11. This is around the same time that Alex Garland's Civil War opened to much box office success for the studio in 2024. Other movies opening on April 11 include Christopher Landon's thriller Drop from Universal/Blumhouse, the espionage thriller The Amateur...

28 Days Later marked the second collaboration for director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland after 2000's The Beach. While the latter isn't widely seen as a seminal work for either creative, the former certainly is. The 2002 zombie thriller stars Cillian Murphy as Jim, a survivor who attempts to traverse London in search of sanctuary following the outbreak of the Rage Virus in the U.K.
Boyle and Garland returned as executive producers for the sequel, 28 Weeks Later (2007), but Boyle is now back as director and Garland as screenwriter for the upcoming 28 Years Later, which marks a reunion after 18 years of working on their own projects. In those 18 years, Boyle directed movies like Slumdog Millionaire (2008), 127 Hours (2010), and Steve Jobs (2015), while Garland moved into directing with projects like Ex Machina (2014), Annihilation (2018), and Civil War (2024). Now, it's been revealed why the pair didn't work together for so long.

In recent weeks, much has been said about classic Fantastic Four villain Annihilus being the main villain in Marvel Television's planned Nova TV series.
It makes sense to introduce the Arthrosian and his Annihilation Wave there, though it does likely mean he won't start life off as an antagonist in The Fantastic Four franchise. Despite that, there's something very exciting about the prospect of Nova either adapting Annihilation or setting the stage for the event in a future cosmic MCU movie.
Now, the latter looks more likely based on new intel shared by insider Daniel Richtman.
He says that Annihilus won't be a one-off villain in Nova; instead, he's expected to appear in other projects as well, likely meaning the cosmic corner of the MCU just found a new big bad.
It's not outside the realm of possibility that Annihilus becomes the next Thanos, particularly if that Annihilation Wave makes its way to Earth.

Quick Links 'Devs' Is a Great Show Because of Its Ambition Devs Gives Its Audience Nothing to Latch Onto 'Devs' Is a Sci-fi Show for Our Time
Few directors can pull off heightened sci-fi like Alex Garland, except for the times he cannot. But this isn't about the movie Men, which, by the way, is somehow too complicated and dumb at the same time. In between the heights of Ex Machina and Annihilation exists a little show called Devs, which is just the right amount of over-complicated and dumb. Devs works so well because it is Garland at his most Garland, leaning into the sleek aesthetic and detached performances of its cast. It's highbrow television, not necessarily because of what it has to say, but more because of how it says it.

After bringing Terminator: Resistance to fans back in 2019, Reef Entertainment are set to return with another Terminator game, thanks to the Australian Classification website. A listing has been discovered for an as-yet-unannounced title called Terminator 2D: No Fate, which is slated for release on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Details on the game are nominal for the moment (seeing as it’s unannounced), but it appears that Reef Entertainment will be developing and publishing Terminator 2D: No Fate, as opposed to having Teyon handling development duties (which they did for Terminator: Resistance).
If you haven’t played Terminator: Resistance, the game features an original story based on The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Taking place in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, nearly 30 years after Judgment Day, Resistance expands upon the Future War glimpsed at in the films, and introduces a new hero, Jacob Rivers,...

The 28 Years Later trailer debuted with record-breaking numbers, and it served as a stark reminder of just how extensive Alex Garland's recent body of work is. The English screenwriter has evolved into one of the most well-respected writers in cinema since his feature debut with 28 Days Later, a film that many regard as one of the foundational horror movies of the last 30 years. While he was only involved in rewrites for the sequel, 28 Weeks Later, Garland will return to the 28 Days Later universe as the primary screenwriter for 28 Years Later and its in-development sequel.
Historically, Garland's writing and directing projects have been pretty well spread out, typically with at least two years in between movie releases that he's worked on. However, that cadence changed in 2024, as Garland suddenly became involved with a number of projects seemingly at the same time. Part of that is...

Glen Powell's new erotic thriller has now found a studio following an intense bidding war that went into the seven figures. After smaller roles in projects like The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and The Expendables 3 (2014), Powell has become a major movie star. Due largely to the success of Top Gun: Maverick (2022) in which he plays Hangman, Powell has now headlined movies like Anyone But You (2023), Hit Man (2023), and Twisters (2024), and his time as a leading man in Hollywood is set to continue with a number of exciting projects.
THR now reports that Homewreckers, Powell's next project, has landed at Legendary after an enthusiastic bidding war between studios. In addition to the story for the film itself, the package includes an unpublished three-chapter story from Neil M. Paik. When you're in "Star Wars," you don't always need that many lines or that much screen time to become a fan favorite. Just ask Ray Park, who quickly shot to fame within the fandom after playing Darth Maul in 1999's "The Phantom Menace." Park doesn't utter a single word as the character, as Maul's few lines were dubbed over by Peter Serafinowicz. When the character was resurrected for "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and "Star Wars Rebels," he was voiced by veteran voice actor Sam Witwer instead. But Park's version of Maul has remained near and dear to fans' hearts due to his unforgettable physical presence and martial arts ability. And yet, he likely would have never been cast if not for a truly terrible movie.

A24 recently released a trailer for Alex Garland’s new movie, ‘Warfare,’ which he co-directed with Ray Mendoza.
This film is a departure from the dystopian themes of Garland’s previous work, ‘Civil War,’ and instead transports viewers to the intense battlegrounds of 2006 Iraq. The film’s release is scheduled for 2025, although an exact date is yet to be confirmed.
Unlike his earlier project which reimagined a second American Civil War, Garland, alongside Mendoza who also served as the military supervisor on ‘Civil War,’ crafted a narrative set against the backdrop of real historical events.
‘Warfare’ offers an in-depth look at the experiences of an American Navy SEALs platoon stationed within an Iraqi family’s home, providing a strategic vantage point to oversee US movements through hostile territories.
The storytelling in ‘Warfare’ is unique as it unfolds in real-time, reflecting the personal memories of those who were there.

By the time director Alex Garland’s film Civil War (you can read our review Here) was released earlier this year, Garland was already working on another war movie called Warfare, co-directing it with Ray Mendoza, who served as the military supervisor for Civil War. Garland and Mendoza also wrote the screenplay together. While Civil War was a dystopian film that imagined a new Civil War breaking out in the United States, Warfare is set during a real war, the story taking viewers back to 2006 Iraq. A24 will be giving the film a theatrical release sometime in 2025, but even though a specific release date has not yet been announced, the first trailer for the film has been unveiled. You can watch it in the embed above.
Warfare embeds audiences with a platoon of American Navy SEALs in the home of an Iraqi family, overwatching the movement of US forces through insurgent territory.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to introduce ‘Nova,’ with reports suggesting that Annihilus will serve as the primary antagonist.
Annihilus, known as ‘The Living Death That Walks,’ is a tyrant from the Negative Zone who commands the Annihilation Wave, posing significant threats to the universe.
His character has clashed with various Marvel heroes, including the Fantastic Four and the Guardians of the Galaxy.
DanielRPK shared on his Patreon that Annihilus is expected to be the villain in the upcoming ‘Nova’ series.
The inclusion of Annihilus hints at a storyline that could delve into cosmic conflicts, potentially drawing inspiration from the ‘Annihilation’ comic event, where Nova played a central role in combating Annihilus’s forces.
This development suggests a deeper exploration of Marvel’s cosmic universe in future MCU projects.

22 years ago, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland helped to kickstart a zombie movie renaissance with "28 Days Later," a movie that isn't technically a zombie film but, rather, a pandemic film. And sadly, 22 years later, that subgenre is bloodily ripe for the exploitin'.
On June 20, 2025, "28 Years Later" will pick up 18 years (in our own timeline) after the rage virus bedlam of Juan Carlos Fresndillo's 2007 sequel "28 Weeks Later." Lest you think this is some small affair, know that 2024 Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy is reprising his role as the once comatose Jim for the film. He'll be joined by the immensely talented likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O'Connell, and Ralph Fiennes in the cast. As for the state of the world in "28 Years Later," per the premise the rage virus is once again spreading and, presumably, the aforementioned actors will be scrambling to keep from joining the ranks of the infected.

If you’ve been following DC’s ups and downs, you know the franchise hasn’t always had the smoothest ride (we’re being kind in our judgment here). It is, however, a different ballgame altogether now – with James Gunn and Peter Safran in charge. This era begins with Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, a slate comprising fresh iterations and adaptations of both movies and shows.
Aur revoir Zack Snyder, hello James Gunn | Credits: Warner Bros.
Unlike the fragmented approach of the past and countless Zack Snyder misfires, Chapter One looks to present a cohesive and interconnected universe. While characters like Robert Pattinson’s Batman and Todd Phillips’ Joker remain in their respective Elseworlds universes, this feels like the fresh start DC fans have been waiting for. Let’s take a closer look at each project in Chapter One, and see just how they are set to reshape the DC Universe.

On his personal Threads account, Gunn responded to a fan asking about a crew member for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and instead of his usual debunk, Gunn revealed that the rumor was true. Rob Hardy, best known for his work with Alex Garland on Annihilation, Ex Machina, and Civil War, will serve as the cinematographer for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. He also served as the Director of Photography for Mission: Impossible - Fallout. The Dcu film will feature House of the Dragon breakout star Milly Alcock in the lead role of Supergirl/Kara Zor-El, and she’ll be flanked by Matthias Schoenaerts, who will play Krem of the Yellow Hills, along with Eve Ridley in the role of Ruthye Marye Knoll.

Great art invites interpretation, not by being needlessly obtuse, but by encouraging the viewers to explore certain ideas and concepts that are presented uniquely. Alex Garlands sci-fi film, Annihilation, is great art because it leaves its audience unsettled, winding its story into the realm of the unexpected particularly for those viewers who were just expecting a run-of-the-mill sci-fi action movie. As such, its also a movie bound to frustrate and infuriate some viewers who crave clarity and normalcy. The movie veers into the unexpected, yet in a pointed way. Sequences like Tessa Thompson sprouting leaves and people getting attacked by a bear with human screams, for example, are horrifying, but with specificity.
