Jonathan Majors’ reputation has been in the ground. Ever since the actor was accused of assault by his ex-girlfriend, he lost everything within the span of weeks. Although he has served his punishment, not being given jail time, his image still finds it difficult to recover from such a major hit.

Simultaneously, the actor just announced his marriage to Meagan Good, having secretly conducted a ceremony. Amid so much controversy, one cannot help but wonder about the impact a marriage can have on another person, especially when their partner has such a bad reputation.
In a recent interview, Majors revealed that he asked Good to break up with him before they got married, and the reason is quite heartwarming.

Part 1 of Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black squeezed a lot of strip club scandal, murder, blackmail, and kidnapping into its ten riveting episodes. But, if you can believe it, Part 2 of the Chicago–set series — now streaming — has even more juicy drama and salacious twists, especially when it comes to Kimmie.
Taylor Polidore Williams, who plays the down-on-her-luck dancer, explains her character’s arc over the first season. “She’s desperate for a way out,” the actor tells Tudum. “She has dreams, she’s inspired to be more, but she’s both physically and mentally trapped. We watch her get pushed to her absolute breaking point through all of Part 1. By the end of the season, Kimmie is on the verge of discovering a whole new level of power.”

Critics have never been especially reliable supporters of Tyler Perry. The creator of the comedic Madea franchise, Perry began his career as a relatively unknown playwright. After adapting one of his plays, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, he rocketed into mainstream success and quickly became a prominent figure within Hollywood. He has since contributed to dozens of movies and TV shows as an actor, creator, director, writer, or producer. Perry's work has proven divisive, as many of his lowest-rated movies on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer have impressed audiences:

The 6888th battalion might very well “represent the best of America,” but filmmaker Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight is still disappointing the critics. And, unfortunately, the results perpetuate Perry's poor scoring on Rotten Tomatoes, as the historical war drama currently registers only 49% on the Tomatometer against 35 reviews.
However, it’s not unusual for Perry’s movies to be glossed over. In fact, many of Perry’s most popular titles, including Madea Goes to Jail (29%), Madea’s Family Reunion (26%), and Meet the Browns (33%) all landed terrible reviews (per Rt), even though the fans adored them. So, it’s not that much of a surprise to see his newest Netflix flick being panned. 2024 has been particularly harsh for the filmmaker, with Mea Culpa registering only 18% on the Tomatometer, and then there is Divorce in the Black’s unprecedented 0% Rt score —zero! Actors Jonathan Majors and Meagan Good are engaged. The couple revealed the news at Sunday night’s Ebony Power 100 Gala event in Los Angeles, with Good showing off her diamond engagement ring on the red carpet.
In an interview with E! News at the event, the couple said the Ebony Power 100 Gala had a special significance for them as it was where they first in 2022. Majors, 35, and Good, 43, have been dating since May 2023, two months after the Lovecraft Country actor was arrested over an alleged assault against ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari.
Good publicly stood by Majors as he was later charged and stood trial for assaulting Jabbari in November 2023. The Shazam! actress was a near constant presence in court during the three-week trial. Tyler Perry's recent Netflix series, Beauty in Black, brings consistent and entertaining drama and has many already waiting for season 2. Beauty in Black centers on two main characters, Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams) and Mallory (Crystle Stewart), living in very different circumstances, as an exotic dancer and hair care company mogul, respectively. Despite their differences, Kimmie and Mallory's lives become intertwined as season 1 progresses, leading up to Beauty in Black's shocking season 1 ending.
Beauty in Black comes as a result of Tyler Perry's multi-year creative partnership with Netflix, which will see the multi-hyphenate creator release new shows and movies on the streaming platform. While Beauty in Black currently holds a meager 47% Rotten Tomatoes audience rating, its drama and several good performances from its stars have rocketed Beauty in Black to the top of Netflix's charts. Tyler Perry's poor relationship with critics is not found in his connection to audiences. His newest project, Beauty in Black, has found an audience on Netflix, and his previous movies have had significantly better audience scores than critical scores. His last film, Divorce in the Black, scored 0% on Rotten Tomatoes but found an audience on Prime Video and scored 73% on Rotten Tomatoes from viewers. Before that, he directed Mea Culpa, which saw a 17% critic and 37% audience score, but it was a hit on Netflix when it was released. His track record with critics is rivaled only by someone like Adam Sandler, and like him, Tyler Perry is a sort of audience darling. His projects prove the flaws of critical reviews, providing a compelling argument for their limitations.

Tyler Perrys Beauty in Black is another instant hit for Netflix as part of the writer/director/actors collaboration with the streamer. However, the new series has also continued a trend of appalling critical reviews and love-it-or-hate-it audience reactions to Perrys exclusive releases on the platform. Netflix has previously come under fire for their long-term deal with Perry from fans of the many positively received shows that have been canceled in favor of trash developed by the writer.
Tyler Perry has been on quite a rollercoaster ride with Netflix since signing an extensive deal back in 2023. That deal was for Perry to deliver eight movies over four years, and shortly after, he did confess in an interview that he had no idea what he was going to do. Tyler Perry’s latest film “Divorce in the Black” not only drew strong viewership — Nielsen reported that it hit more than 498 million minutes watched in its first four days of availability on Amazon Prime Video — but according to Amazon, the soapy drama has also driven more sign-ups to Prime Video in the U.S. than any Amazon MGM Studios-produced movie to-date.
The declaration comes after “Divorce in the Black” made its debut on the Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart, where it came in as the No. 3 movie of the July 8-14 viewing window behind Netflix’s “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” and “If” on Paramount+. When divided by the film’s nearly 2.5-hour length, its 498 million-minute total during that window (the film began streaming on July 11) translates to an estimated 3.5 million views.

Overall streaming numbers for July 8-14 came down a fair amount from the record-breaking previous week. HBO’s House of the Dragon, however, was virtually even with its prior viewing total — which was good enough to move it to the top spot for the first time.
House of the Dragon amassed 1.27 billion minutes of viewing on Max (not including viewing on HBO’s cable channels), just a smidge below the 1.3 billion it had the week before. With the two titles ahead of it the previous week, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Suits, each falling by significant amounts, the HBO show moved up to No. 1.
Suits fell by 28 percent week-to-week to 1.07 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Peacock, which was good for third place overall, slightly behind Bluey (1.08 billion minutes on Disney+) and just ahead of The Boys (1.05 billion for Prime Video), which had its fifth consecutive week over the billion-minute mark.

Strike first and strike hard, indeed. Netflix’s “Cobra Kai” and Peacock’s “Love Island USA” topped the Luminate streaming originals TV series charts for the July 19-25 period. On the film side, Netflix’s new rom-com “Find Me Falling” and a resurgent “Hillbilly Elegy” led the field.
The Season 6 debut of “Cobra Kai” delivered 716 million minutes watched in the show’s first full week of availability, following the July 18 premiere of the first half of its final season. The July 21 season finale of relationship reality show “Love Island USA” drove that show to rack up 631 million minutes watched.
Amazon Prime Video's "The Boys" also had a strong frame thanks to its Season 4 finale bowing July 18. The superhero sendup finished out with 431.6 million minutes viewed. The conclusion of Season 1 of Apple TV+'s David E. Kelley drama "Presumed Innocent" took that show up the charts in a big way to 424.1 million minutes watched.

Tyler Perry isn’t letting the “highbrow” critics of his movies deter him from sharing stories related to Black communities.
“I know for a fact that what I’m doing is exactly what I’m supposed to be doing,” Perry said during a recent appearance on the “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer” podcast. “Because for everyone who is a critic, I have thousands of — used to be — emails from people saying, ‘This changed my life. Oh my God, you know me. Oh my God, you saw me. How did you know this about my life and my family?’ That is what is important.”
Perry’s latest drama film “Divorce in the Black,” starring Meagan Good and Cory Hardict, has been widely panned by critics and even earned a rare 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film currently holds a 75% audience score.

Tyler Perry received a zero percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes for his latest movie, Divorce in the Black. The film starred Meagan Good, Cory Hardict, and Debbi Morgan and premiered on Amazon Prime in mid-July 2024. The stars of the movie raved about the treatment and the pay they received working for Tyler, but movie critics slammed the movie, attacking the storyline and character development. The criticism was not unexpected because Tyler Perry's immensely successful career has been shadowed by harsh words from his peers about the writing and production quality of his films and television programs.

Spoiler Warning: This story discusses plot points from “Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black,” now streaming on Prime Video.
Tyler Perry’s latest drama “Divorce in the Black” stars Meagan Good as Ava, a banker with an abusive husband. Their turbulent marriage is punctuated by a series of explosive incidents — beginning with the film’s wild prologue, set amid a small-town funeral that quickly (and meme-ably) gets out of hand when their families clash rather spectacularly. Then, when Dallas decides to abandon the marriage and file for divorce, Ava reconnects with her long-lost soulmate and the drama heats up even further. Although Ava used to be willing to fight for their relationship, she finally sees Dallas’ malicious behaviors in the truest light. The trouble is, her ex-husband isn’t willing to give up so easily.

“Love Island USA” has hit its stride.
Season 6 of the Peacock reality dating show was the No. 1 most-watched streaming original series in the U.S. during the week of July 5-11, hitting 919.1 million minutes watched, per Luminate. While Season 6 has consistently ranked on Luminate’s charts since its debut during the June 14-20 window, this has been its biggest week by far, marking a 61% jump in viewership from the previous week and a 257% increase from its debut week. Of course, much of the increase is due to the sheer amount of content now available — 27 episodes had been released by July 11 — but it’s clear that the series’ popularity has seen solid growth over time.

Tyler Perry's Divorce in the Black has broken a major Rotten Tomatoes record for the filmmaker. Perry is a prolific playwright, screenwriter, director, and actor who is best known for the Madea movies, in which he stars in drag as the title character, the loving but tough matriarch of a sprawling family. He frequently plays a variety of other characters opposite Madea, though his movies also typically boast vast ensemble casts of notable actors such as Taraji P. Henson, Loretta Devine, Shemar Moore, Cicely Tyson, Keke Palmer, Viola Davis, and more.

There are good movies that, in detail, discuss the dynamics of a married couple that have been in a relationship for a long time. It goes into detail about the challenges they face as a long-term couple. The trials and tribulations are what make or break them. Blue Valentine, Revolutionary Road, and Marriage Story are some of the finest examples of how filmmakers can portray the intimacy shared by a couple who are on the verge of breaking up. Actor/Director Tyler Perry’s new directorial venture on Amazon Prime Video, Divorce in the Black, is probably the antithesis of what the above-mentioned movies represent. Released on the streaming platform on July 11, 2024, the movie captures the unstable relationship between Ava and her husband, Dallas.

The movie's emotional rollercoaster lacks consistency, making it hard to follow the intended storyline. Dallas is portrayed as a one-dimensional villain, while Ava's character development is the film's best aspect. Tonal shifts between cruelty and self-discovery create a jarring viewing experience, despite strong performances.
Tyler Perry's Divorce in the Black feels pieced together from several conflicting scripts, making it almost impossible to follow the film's weighty emotional throughline. What could be a sincere take on the experiences of people in cycles of abusive relationships becomes a story that pivots in tone so many times it's hard to take seriously. Tyler Perry's movies fall into many genres, but Divorce in the Black treads no new ground compared to his other dramas. Even in the film's most shocking moments, its narrative is part of a common formula.

A couple edge toward a split in the writer-director’s shoddy Amazon Prime offering, carelessly made and dull to watch
When you see a title like Divorce in the Black appear underneath a Tyler Perry byline, you assume this is more not-so-clever wordplay that clumsily states the obvious: a woman takes her no-good ex to the cleaners before riding off into the sunset. But this new Amazon Prime feature doesn’t just fail to live up to that billing. It’s easily his worst film to date.
Perry – who, as ever, hordes credit for producing, writing and directing this 132-minute film – sets up the disappointment early, opening at the funeral of a young man for a heavy dose of exposition. Who the man is doesn’t matter as much as him dying while attempting to rob a parishioner who just so happened to be packing heat. In between the deceased...
