Gene Roddenberry created Star Trek and was its sole showrunner and creative spirit throughout its three-season run. As the show got canceled after the third season, it found a new lease of life in syndication and eventually with the original films and The Next Generation. However, the path was not that easy for Roddenberry.
The showrunner reportedly hoped to continue the series as a feature film, which was then turned into a sequel series. Ultimately, his idea for a movie was given the go-ahead but Star Trek: The Motion Picture’s lackluster results prompted the studio to kick Roddenberry ‘upstairs’ as a consultant. However, he still had an idea for a sequel which he hoped to make.

Stephen King adaptations have long been a cornerstone of horror cinema. However, while some adaptations successfully capture the magic of King’s writing, others struggle to balance the scale and tone of his writing. Striking the right balance between King’s vivid characters, plots and atmosphere has proven to be a challenge – one that Hulu’s 11.22.63 couldn’t quite overcome.
Hulu’s miniseries had all the ingredients for success: a gripping premise, a stellar cast, and a devoted fan base. Yet, 11.22.63 fell short of the book’s brilliance, stripping away its depth and complexity. What could have been a masterful retelling of one of King’s greatest works became just another adaptation that missed the mark.

11/22/63 wasn’t Stephen King’s first foray into the Sci-Fi genre, but it was arguably one of his best.

A few years before Stephen King published his first book, "Carrie," in 1974, he was struck by an idea for a historical novel. After calling this project "Split Track" in his head, King began working on it but soon realized that preliminary research required more time and dedication than he could spare at that moment. Although he abandoned the idea in favor of ideas that were easier to actualize, King would eventually return to this historical premise and tell a time-travel story that loops back to a particular date. This was his 2011 novel "11/22/63," wherein high school English teacher Jake Epping gets the opportunity to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which took place on November 22, 1963. As with every time travel tale with consequences, the aftereffects of messing with history are not pretty.

For many decades, Stephen King's novels and short stories have been adapted into hit movies and TV shows. Iconic movies such as The Shining, Carrie, and The Green Mile were adapted from King's stories. Over the years, fascination with the worlds and characters created by Stephen King has not ceased. It's possible that the books of Stephen King have become more popular than ever before with the rise of streaming services.
Stephen King adaptations have always been very popular on streaming services. However, months ago, one of the best TV shows based on King's work was removed from the Disney-owned Hulu. Recently, the 2016 miniseries 11-22-63 moved to Tubi, which will give new viewers a chance to discover the greatness of the time travel show. While it is arguable that 11-22-63 remains the best Stephen King TV show, a new series premiering in 2025 could be a worthy competitor.

A sci-fi thriller Stephen Kingadaptation is now available to stream after being removed from another platform. Across film and television, there is a litany of upcoming King adaptations in various stages of development. On the immediate front, however, there are three big-screen projects to watch for: The Monkey, helmed by Longlegs director Osgood Perkins; Edgar Wright's The Running Man starring Glen Powell; and Francis Lawrence's The Long Walk. The first two movies are slated for 2025, while the third is undated.
On the TV side, there's Welcome to Derry, the television adaptation of the It movies, which will bring back Bill Skarsgrd in the role of Pennywise. It was also recently announced that King's seminal novel Carrie will be adapted as a miniseries by The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass creator Mike Flanagan. You just finished The Last Night at Tremore Beach, the latest mind-boggling offering from Oriol Paulo, and now you don’t know what to do with life. Well, the only way to fill the void is to start something similar, and that’s why you’re here. So in this article, I am going to suggest certain movies and shows that you might consider watching if you enjoyed Oriol Paulo’s Netflix show. I hope all of you find something here.
Caddo Lake (2024)
Let us start with something from the very recent past. I could have just suggested Dark instead, but assuming many of you have already seen that show, I urge you to give Caddo Lake a try. Yes, the latest M. Night Shyamalan-produced horror-thriller takes a whole lot of ideas from the iconic Netflix series, but the good thing about the movie is that it also implements the ideas really well.

As one of the first Hulu original series ever produced by the streaming service, it was a bit of a surprise when the 2016 Stephen King miniseries 11.22.63 disappeared earlier this year, but if you somehow managed to miss this underrated gem during its first go around, have no fear because not only has it found a new home, but youll be able to stream it for free next week.
Based on Kings epic 2011 novel, the series centers around the recently divorced Jake Epping, who is presented with a portal to 1960 in an old diner and tasked with going back in time to stop the assassination of President Kennedy. However, its not as easy as removing Lee Harvey Oswald from the equation, as Epping soon learns that when you set out to change the past, the past fights back.

The Tourist, Search Party, and The Americans got high praise from Stephen King for their thrilling plots and engaging characters. From Money Heist to Dark, King's recommendations highlight his admiration for complex, foreign-language series on streaming platforms.

J.J. Abrams' career has been negatively impacted by his struggles with Star Wars and DC. Stephen King recommended his horror series Lisey's Story as the perfect July viewing, but the Apple TV+ series actually breaks King's 19-year Rotten Tomatoes streak. Based on King's 2006 novel of the same name, he also served as the show's creator, executive producer, and writer. Lisey's Story follows widow Lisey (Julianne Moore) as she copes with her the death of her husband, the famous author Scott Landon (Clive Owen) while learning secrets from his past. Despite the show's intriguing premise, the Apple TV series received Rotten scores from both audiences and critics.

Ever since the English writer H. G. Wells wrote The Time Machine back in 1895, time travel has remained popular in movies, books, games, and TV shows. Since scientific explanations are normally given for the characters’ ability to journey through different time periods, the majority of works that use the concept normally fall under the sci-fi genre. However, a couple of fantasy projects also embrace it.
In the TV landscape, time travel can be traced all the way back to The Twilight Zone’s original pilot, “The Time Element,” but while the anthology series only uses the concept sparingly, there are numerous series that have made entire premises out of it. Whether through film or television, most of Stephen King's novels and short stories have been adapted for the screen in one way or another. Like 2023's The Boogeyman, the most successful adaptations of King's works have been in film. There have also been several done for TV that, while still memorable and iconic in their own way, have almost always been infamously met with a more mixed to negative reception. One exception to this, however, is Hulu's 2016 miniseries, 11.22.63, which was met with both critical and commercial praise.
Starring James Franco and based on King's time-travel thriller, the story is about a man's journey to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The series is not only a faithful take on the source material, but it also manages to avoid the infamous pitfalls that have caused certain King adaptations to fail in their execution. While certain older...

Netflix's The Dirt features a number of actors portraying real-life rock stars, including members of Mötley Crüe and other heavy metal icons, and some of the cast are actual musicians themselves. Based on Mötley Crüe's collective autobiography (co-authored by Neil Strauss), The Dirt incorporates many true facts from the band's unbelievable story. The movie is appropriately helmed by Jackass co-creator Jeff Tremaine, who is no stranger to filming chaotic pranks. When its narrative is not exploring Mötley Crüe's rise to fame, The Dirt is filled with the band’s infamous on-stage and backstage antics. At the same time, it also highlights their family troubles and struggles with drug addiction.
The true story of The Dirt is brought to life by the main actors portraying the members of Mötley Crüe, each of them relying on heavy makeup, long hair, and an unabashedly brash attitude to play their respective characters.

Exclusive: Warner Bros. has acquired the Stephen King bestseller Billy Summers.
While in development, the feature project will be produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way. If this comes out great, it could be a project for Abrams to direct with DiCaprio playing the title character.
Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz are writing the screenplay.
This was originally packaged as a ten-episode limited series, shopped around to cable networks and streamers, as we first told you last February, but the decision was made that Billy Summers would work better as a feature.

Given the current wave of Stephen King movies and TV shows doing big business at the moment, you would have thought that The Shining spin-off series Overlook would have been a sure fire winner for HBO Max, but it seems that they have decided that the project from J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot is not one they want to move forward with. While it would be a no brainier for the Warner Bros. drama to go to HBO Max, it seems that are instead trying to find it a new home, with some suggestions saying that Netflix are the likely target.
Overlook tells the story of the hotel made famous by King's novel The Shining, which has been made into numerous movies and TV shows in its own right. Written by Dustin Thomason and Scott Brown, the series was originally commissioned back in 2019 and was parent of the Bad Robot deal with WarnerMedia,...

A new live-action Pokemon series is in the works at Netflix. Variety reported on Monday that Lucifer co-showrunner and executive producer Joe Henderson is attached to write and executive produce the series, but as it's still in its early stages, no information is yet available about the potential plot. It's reportedly a live-action series akin to Detective Pikachu, though it's not clear if the new show will be connected.
It's said that the new Pokemon series comes along as Netflix makes a harder push into producing more anime content exclusive to the streaming service. New anime-style shows based on established properties like Far Cry, Splinter Cell, and The Terminator have already been announced. Live-action adaptations of popular anime like Cowboy Bebop and One Piece are also in development. This follows Netflix developing a live-action Death Note and homing the Pokemon shows Pokemon: Indie League and Pokemon Journeys.

When Rolling Stone asked Stephen King to pick his best book in 2014, he didn’t go for an obvious candidate like The Stand, The Shining, It, Carrie, or Misery.
