Contrieved, plenty of melodrama, plot holes, but kind of watchable

Yes, it's going to be compared to Yellowstone. Yes, it has same over the top plots, conflicts and wacky characters. Yes, you can point to a lot of similar issues.

For me two main problems are stuff that just happens because it has to drive plot forward. Plots that make no sense. Family patriarch just decides on succession without really considering pros and cons of each option.

Second is plot holes that exist for similar reason, to drive plot forward. Station is supposed to be the size of Belgium yet is run by family (4 members initially, later expanded to a bit more) and what seems lie a skeleton crew. But of course greedy corporations try to take it away from them.

I also didn't like how everything keeps building up. Tensions rise, conflict deepen, passions get stirred... and then things gets resolved (after a fashion) within half an hour.

But it's ot a bad show, if you can look beyond that. Camera work is good, nature looks gorgeous....

Yakka-stone

It's Yellowstone set in the rugged outback of northern Australia! And if that sounds both fun and slightly over the top, that's exactly what it is.

I'm only a few episodes in, but it's already hitting all the marks. Rampaging bulls? Yep. Bar fights? Tick. Rampaging killer dingoes (?!) You betcha.

The cheesiness is held in place by some nice performances, particularly from the ever-reliable Anna Torv and the marvellous Robert Taylor, here playing a flabbier, viler and more misogynistic version of Kevin Costner's Yellowstone character.

The best character, though, is the scenery, which is every bit as stunning as you'd expect.

I'm looking forward to finishing this one!

Yellowstone in Australia

If ever there was a clone of a show, this is it. This is basically Yellowstone in Australia. It is watchable, and the acting good, but wow, every has a problem and there does not appear to be a good guy. In Yellowstone you either like or hate the main character. Here, there is no way to like someone who is abusive and basically a selfish jerk. But that is my opinion. There are some twists in the plot that will keep you interested, and it is something that will hold your interest, but it does not have the quality of Yellowstone and in some places falls flat. At the end, it leaves it open for a second season but so many of the characters you liked in the show were killed off, so why would I want to watch a season two since the remaining characters are not ones that are interesting.

It is worth a look.

Territory-Terrific

Reading some of the reviews here and had to give my opinion, because people may miss out on a terrific watch. It may just be some people are just expecting too much from these shows, but if you fancy a few hours watching great acting by great (don't have to be popular) characters, plenty of storylines to get on with, drama, violence, emotion, scenery, and escape from city life, then please don't miss out. Don't watch it to compare to other shows. View territory on its own merits. From the very start it grips and the thrills and spills don't end to the very last scene, and as the credits rolled, I'm sat here thinking please get season 2 out as quick as possible. I'm already missing this fabulous entertaining show.

Good series

We really enjoyed this series. Great actors. We loved Robert Taylor in Longmeier, he makes a great western style old and crusty guy. Anna Torv is wonderful as a complex female adversary. We loved her on Fringe but didn't realize she was Australian because she dropped her accent. Same for Michael Dorman who was in For All Mankind. It's pretty amazing how U. K. and Australian/NZ actors can drop their accents and sound so American.

It's nice to have shows set in nature, rather than concrete cities and constant violence.

If you liked Yellowstone, you'll like this.

I really hope there's a season 2.

Wears you down..

This show is filled with amazing talent and the backdrop is beautiful.

The plot is believable and easy to follow but the characters are difficult to like. It wasn't until episode 5 any of them showed any sign of redemption. It was just so hard to root for anyone.

The entire premise of the show is tragedy upon tragedy. Episode 5 brings a reunion of sorts then bam... more tragedy.

There are only 6 episodes and perhaps episode 6 is what brings it all together but honestly, I was so thoroughly depressed after the 1st 5 episodes I couldn't take anymore.

There is such a lack of balance between hope and despair. It wasn't an enjoyable watch for me at all. I only stuck it out as far as I did because I'm such a fan of some of the actors and actresses.

Trigger happy people in the outback

There are shows you start watching and have high hopes for. This show is about a family owning a very large amount of land in the outback of Oz . Which could make for a lovely scenic drama. The land and it's charisma is unfortunately ruined by extremely poor script writing. It's very over dramatic, has characters that are borderline charicatures and there's way too much totally unbeleivable stuff happening. While as a viewer you want to be swept up by a story about a family that has characters with depth and and complexity. They try that but the characters fail to form a family you engage with. There's way too much crime and drama happening, which again is poorly written.

Apparently people just constantly shoot, rob and hurt each other in the big land down under.

So I really wanted to like this, but the writers made this a second rate crime show that despite some great actors doesn't deserve a high rating.

I will however have hope for a second season if they dial the drama and violence back a lot, and let some intelligent people do the writing. There is a foundation with the scenery and a good cast they can build on. But that's it.

Don't compare it with another shows (Yellowstone) and u will enjoy!!

So first off all , wow what a ride! It has everything you the people want , drama , thrillers . Yeah maybe not perfect in all things , but definitely one of the best westerns shows in recent years. You just need to not fall in a comparisons with another shows like Yellowstone universe , don't compare it , and I promise you, all off you will enjoy this amazing show . Amazing cast , amazing acting , amazing event , amazing Locations , incredible cinematography. When I saw the trailer, I knew it will be a big deal , but it's lack the promotions , so please we need a lot of people to see this show , I totally recommend it so they can renew this great show.

Who writes this stuff?

I had to look deeply to make sure that Taylor Sheridan wasn't the writer. It's actually a bit better soap opera because it takes place in Australia with better scenery and actually more cows, but that's about it.

Aussies are not gun totting eejits. People do not ever smoke in barns.....ever!

I wanted to love this show so bad; it had so many possibilities. The croc egg thing was just a bit over the top.

As to handing over the station to a kid who basically hasn't been living on the station for years, and ignoring the dad who obviously loves and is a hard worker of the land.

He and his wife have been there. So the dad just hands it over to a kid because he can. Stupid.

Catching a creep trying to rob the place (the safe) and she doesn't kick him off the station? Noooooo, he stays around to influence the grandson.

Aussies are more fun loving than fighters.

It's a weak show . I so wanted to love it.

I think that even Sheridan would have done better and that's saying a lot.

Pass. A heavy pass.

I gave it three stars because the I like the actors, the scenery and it is after all Australia!

There will not be a Season two I hope. The sleezy characters would have been eaten by the crocs, they are so stupid.

Oh and the dingos eating people alive? Seriously? I mean Seriously?

OTT shoot 'em ups

While I thought this was a beautifully filmed series, the story line is overly melodramatic. The acting is fantastic, the relationship bonds are intriguing, complex just enough. Viewers outside of Australia may be scratching their heads about our gun control laws while watching this. I lived in the Northern Territory for 8 years, there's certainly not this much shooting going on between humans, it's OTT. Makes me think its made for an international audience. The destruction of country and constant manipulation is certainly true to life. Death and grief could be explored in more depth, although the inheritance of psychological trauma does a good job of continuing throughout. It's a very watchable series.

Territory - A Gritty, Unpretentious Masterpiece

Territory delivers what so many modern Western dramas attempt but often fail to capture: authenticity, depth, and a raw, character-driven storyline that hooks you from the first episode. The series offers a refreshing take on power struggles, family dynamics, and the unyielding grit of frontier life without the glossy, over-stylized presentation found in shows like Yellowstone.

The actors bring every bit of their A-game, delivering nuanced performances that bring out the complexity and depth of their characters. Each episode reveals layers to their motivations, strengths, and vulnerabilities, painting a landscape where no one is simply "good" or "bad." It's a world where characters are just as rugged as the terrain they inhabit, yet their struggles are deeply relatable, drawing you into their emotional battles as much as their external conflicts.

Unlike other shows in the genre, Territory doesn't rely on the overblown drama or pretentious monologues. Instead, it unfolds with a storytelling style that is honest and grounded, making it feel almost like you're eavesdropping on real lives. The writers and directors respect the intelligence of their audience, trusting us to pick up on subtleties without everything being explained.

If you're looking for a Western drama with substance, Territory is absolutely worth your time. It has raised the bar for what the genre can be-an artful blend of compelling storytelling and stellar performances, set against a breathtaking backdrop.

Yellowstone Competitor Pleaseeeeee

Really hard to understand the great reviews here. It's clear they have tried to make their version of Yellowstone, but have failed miserably. My wife stopped watching after two episodes, I probably should have too. Yellowstone is my favorite show, so I was very excited to watch this, but it stupid, it's not funny. It's amazing how easy it is to steal everything in this show, helicopter, cattle and quads. It's just so stupid, no repercussions whatsoever. I will finish series, but probably won't watch additional series.

And I still need another 77 characters to even submit this review. It's the reason I dont submit reviews here, just ridiculous criteria.

Giving a 10 to counteract the unfairly low score

Honestly, the show is great. Australian film and media is improving, as we try and make a name in an industry we've previously been levels below the international standard.

The acting is fantastic, Anna Torv is a clear standout as Emily Lawson, a complex and calculated character who I was uncertain of the entire season.

Nothing tears a family apart quite like a legacy with a price tag, as the male family members fight for power and the women fight for what they deserve. It's been a while since I've watched a TV that didn't bore me to tears within the first episode.

It 1000% deserves higher than the 6.9 I've seen on here, it would be a joke and an insult to have the rating anything lower than a 7.5. I encourage everyone to give it a chance and come back to rate it for themselves, can't wait for next season.

Wasted opportunity.

This series had immense potential to become an Australian masterpiece, yet it ultimately succumbed to the pitfalls of excessive melodrama, resembling a midday soap opera. This choice seems aimed at appealing to a broader US or global audience, but in doing so, it sacrifices the authenticity that characterizes many high-quality Australian productions.

On a positive note, the cinematography is exceptional, showcasing breathtaking locations that enhance the viewing experience. The cast is commendable, delivering strong performances despite grappling with a lackluster script.

While it's certainly watchable, there's an undeniable sense of disappointment that this series could have been a landmark achievement for Australian television. Instead, it falls short of raising the bar for the industry, leaving viewers yearning for what could have been.

Territory: A Riveting Saga of Power, Family, and the Outback

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Netflix's Territory is a captivating series that plunges viewers into the heart of the Australian outback, where a powerful cattle dynasty faces a crisis of succession. With stunning cinematography capturing the vast, unforgiving landscape, the show delivers a thrilling blend of family drama, political intrigue, and high-stakes action.

The performances are outstanding, with Anna Torv delivering a commanding portrayal of Emily Lawson, the matriarch fighting to protect her family's legacy. The supporting cast is equally impressive, bringing depth and complexity to their roles.

The series excels in its exploration of themes of power, greed, and the enduring spirit of the Australian frontier. The writing is sharp and engaging, keeping the audience hooked with its twists and turns. While some may find the soap opera elements excessive, they ultimately contribute to the show's addictive quality.

Territory is a must-watch for fans of dramas like Succession and Yellowstone. It's a gripping tale of ambition, betrayal, and the fight for survival in one of the world's most unforgiving environments.

Fast moving succession wannabe with a terrible script

Okay, I have only watched the first episode but so far my thoughts are:

Looks beautiful, fantastic to see the top end of Australia shot so glamorously. I'm from the bottom part of Australia and have never been to the top end.

Editing is excellent. Very dynamic and lots of great camera movement within the shots which adds to the feeling that things are moving along.

Has an over the top feel to it, especially the sequence in the beginning when the mustering truck is flanked by other vehicles and a helicopter hovering above. Very spectacular but surely quite dangerous and unrealistic .

Lots of action, violence and dust.

Lots of pretty people and a mysterious absence of people with beer bellies, even in the pubs!

Lots of nasty people doing nasty things. Reminded me of Succession but without the excellent script.

Awful dialogue. Lots of telling rather than showing.

Fast moving plot that makes up for the awful dialogue.

This is a very glamorous expensive soap opera. And I'm up for it!
