Animated movies have long been crowd-pleasers, working with audiences of all ages. This can, perhaps, be attributed to the freedom that comes with the medium. With the genre’s history dating back to the late 1800s, it’s fascinating to see how animation has evolved from short, silent films to this billion-dollar culture machine.

While box office data began to be tracked in the 1920s, it wasn’t until the late 20th and early 21st centuries that animated films began breaking financial records. Today, a select group of these films has achieved rather extraordinary success, capturing the hearts (and wallets) of millions worldwide.

Let’s count down the animated movies that have made history, starting at number thirteen and working our way to the champion of the billion-dollar club. (You never know who overtakes them next).

Zootopia (2016)

It may be time for Disney to return to 2D animation and there are great reasons for it!

There's been a long debate among Disney fans about whether the company should go back to traditional hand-drawn 2D animation. They had tried in 2009 with The Princess and the Frog but that movie's underperformance at the box office meant sticking to CGI.

Disney has seen a lot of success since adapting to 3D animation. However, it's also seen failures like 2024's Wish. They've had to rely on Pixar and change Moana 2 from a planned TV series to a feature film. Which is why maybe it's a great time for Disney to seriously consider going back to 2D animation and there are some excellent reasons it can work!

1. It just comes off more magical

As much as we love the likes of Tangled or, Frozen or Zootopia, one can't help but...

Disney's animated films are some of the most iconic in the industry. They make people feel good, cry happy tears and learn a bit about the world. However, above everything, Disney's films are hilarious. Fans have watched some of these emblematic movies dozens of times and know all their favorite scenes by heart. Some of the jokes, quips and one-liners from fan-favorite characters have become cultural staples.

Disney is known for including some of everything in its movies: emotional moments, epic battles and absurd and hilarious jokes. Some movies will have the audience laughing and crying from one scene to another. However, the best jokes are the ones that stand out the most in the long term.

Disney’s “Snow White” took a larger Friday-to-Saturday drop than expected and is now projected for a $43 million domestic opening weekend from 4,200 locations with a global launch of just $87 million..

That slide takes the film below pre-release estimates for a $45 million domestic and $100 million global start and doesn’t bode well for its chances to leg out to a theatrical profit against its $250 million-plus production budget.

While Disney did recently have a big comeback story with “Mufasa,” which opened to $35 million domestically and finished with $714 million worldwide, that movie had several weeks of holiday season play to take advantage of. “Snow White” could hypothetically leg out with families during the spring school breaks spread out between now and Easter weekend but will have to contend with competition from “A Minecraft Movie” in early April.

What’s more, reception scores aren’t as strong as “Mufasa,” earning a B+ on CinemaScore...

Get ready for another Pixar sequel as we're getting Coco 2 in a few years!

Like it or not, Disney and Pixar seem intent on focusing on sequels to their past animated hits. True, Pixar does have Elio coming out this summer for an original tale, but the future slate for them and regular Disney animation builds on the hit status of Inside Out 2. 

It appears easier for Disney to mine past successful IP than take a chance ons something new that can disapoint (such as Wish). So we're getting new installments for Zootopia, Frozen and Toy Story. Now, we can add another big Pixar sequel with Coco 2!

During the annual Walt Disney shareholders meeting, CEO Bob Iger confirmed that a sequel to the 2017 Oscar-winning hit is in the works. Per the release, the film reunites directors Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, with Mark Neilsen producing. The film is targeted for a 2029 release.

Now, star John Leguizamo has declared that he is eager to talk more about his character, Bruno, revealing that the House of Mouse is “trying to come up with the storyline” for Encanto 2.

Speaking with People, Leguizamo offered a promising update on the development of Encanto 2, revealing that the animated sequel is now being discussed. Not only that, the actor states that, if he gets his way, the follow-up will be heavily centered on Bruno, the Madrigal’s ostracized uncle who has the ability to see and create visions of the future. Disney movies are largely associated with singing princesses and comedic animal sidekicks. “The Electric State” is a world filled with robots, and odds are, you’re definitely going to recognize a lot of their voices.

Now streaming on Netflix, the film follows Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown), an teenager living on her own and navigating life in a society where robots — yes, robots, this movie takes place in an alternate version of the 1990s that’s much more futuristic — now live in exile after a failed uprising against humans.

Teaming up with a kind robot named Cosmo, Michelle sets out to find her younger brother, who she thought to be dead. Along the way, she also teams up with a smuggler and his own sassy robot sidekick.

Since the establishment of the Best Animated Feature category at the Oscars in 2002, Disney animated films have been racking up the award. With beloved Academy Award Winners like Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, and Zootopia, Disney has continued its animation empire with every win they've secured.

While Disney films still lead the race in many cases, the medium of animation is vast, and the Academy has given the Best Animated Feature award to other animation studios for their unique style and storytelling achievements. The Princess and the Frog sequel series has been scrapped at Disney+. Titled Tiana, the streaming exclusive would have brought back Anika Noni Rose as the voice of Disney's first Black princess, Tiana.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Walt Disney Animation Studios has officially pulled the plug on Tiana as it abandons making original long-form content for Disney+. Sources close to the project revealed that despite best efforts, including several changes to the creative team, the animation studio couldn't get Tiana where it needed to be given its budget. The decision to scrap Tiana in its entirety comes as a bit of a surprise, given that Disney recently found success at the box office with Moana 2, which was announced alongside Tiana back in 2020 as a Disney+ series before ultimately being reworked into a feature-length animated sequel.

Disney Animation’s Moana 2, after being initially conceived for Disney+, then switched up for a theatrical release by Disney Co-Chairman Alan Bergman, will finally hit the service on March 12. That’s a 105-day theatrical window.

Disney saw that the original film was a hit on Disney+, and instead of keeping any passion for the sequel contained at home, they brushed up Moana 2 for the big screen to the tune of $458.8M domestic, $1.05 billion worldwide. The wattage from that theatrical result not only awakens the IP’s flame, but extends it across the parks, merchandise as well as the generational appeal for the franchise to come. A smart decision for a studio who once fell in love with theatrical day and date on their movie titles during Covid with Jungle Cruise, Cruella and Black Widow before realizing the moola is in the big screen.

Although the Academy Awards have had the Best Animated Feature category in its ceremony since Shrek won the inaugural prize in 2002, the awards body has sadly not done a lot to recognize the variety of animated films that are released on a yearly basis. The category is often dominated by powerful studios like Pixar and Walt Disney Animation, and seems to regularly award films that can be broadly described as “family entertainment.” While it would be hard to argue with excellent winners like The Incredibles or Zootopia, it is disappointing that “animation” seems to be deemed by the Oscars to be a “genre,” and not a “medium.” This is why it is so refreshing that this year’s Academy Award for Best Animated Feature nominee Memoir of a Snailis only the second R-rated nominee in the category’s history, and the first since Charlie Kaufman’s stop-motion film Anomalisalost to Inside Out at the 2016 ceremony.

The 2010s was a pivotal time for animated movies. Disney ushered in the new decade with its action-adventure film Tangled while DreamWorks started a successful fantasy franchise with How to Train Your Dragon. Recently retired animation studio Blue Sky made fan-favorite Rio and the next installment of the Ice Age franchise, Ice Age: Continental Drift. As the decade continued, so did the expansive catalog of films, including Kubo and the Two Strings, Zootopia, and Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse.

These films made a lasting impact that projected the path ahead for many of these studios. Some animated films, however, failed to grab the audience's attention the way these titles did. Whether due to lackluster marketing or mixed critical reviews, these films still deserve to be discussed for their originality and broadening of the animation field.

Few stand-up acts have reached the level of superstardom of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. As the stoner comedy duo Cheech & Chong, they were counterculture icons, selling out concerts, delivering platinum-selling records, making a fortune at the box office with original films like 1978's Up in Smoke, and even getting their own mobile games. They've also had wildly successful solo careers on-screen, from Nash Bridges to That 70s Show, Zootopia, Color Out of Space, and From Dusk Till Dawn. One of the few things they didn't have, however, was a fully authorized documentary exploring how they helped define an era and remain recognizable 50 years later through their brand baked in sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. That's about to change this April with Cheech and Chong's Last Movie and Collider can exclusively share the official trailer.

It's no secret that video game movies have been risky propositions for most of their history, though that's changed in more recent years with successful adaptations of big properties like Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog. But back in the mid-2010s, the genre was still mostly wildcards bending toward box office bombs. While the strike-impacted 2024 release slate resulted in fewer movies overall, 2025 promises to be something of a return to normal with a bevy of highly anticipated films coming to both theaters and streaming. From two new Marvel movies to James Gunn’s DC reboot of “Superman” to a “Jurassic” reboot to live-action remakes of animated classics galore, there’s plenty of familiar territory, but also noteworthy original films as well – Ryan Coogler’s vampire film “Sinners,” Steven Soderbergh’s ghost story “Presence” and a new Paul Thomas Anderson movie are all on tap, to name a few.

And that’s not to mention the films that don’t have release dates yet but are promised for 2025 – Netflix alone has the third “Knives Out” movie “Wake Up, Dead Man,” Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” and a new Noah Baumbach film.

Oh yeah, and there’s a new “Avatar” sequel coming in December.

It’s been 40 years since The Goonies first said “Never say die” on the big screen. Recently, most of the cast gathered to recognize actor Key Huy Quan, who played Data in the 1985 The Gooniesmovie. Quan, who won an Academy Award in 2023 for his performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, was honored with a hand and footprint ceremony at the Tcl Chinese Theater in Los Angeles on Feb. 3.

Per People, The Goonies screenwriter Chris Columbus along with Quan’s costars Corey Feldman (Mouth), Jeff Cohen (Chunk), Kerri Green (Andy), and Josh Brolin (Brand), were on hand for the ceremony. Brolin, who spoke at the ceremony, had nothing but kind things to say about Quan, who played Data in The Goonies.

Disney has announced the closing date for one of the last opening-day attractions at Animal Kingdom, so here’s when you can see it for the last time!

Since opening in 1998, the Animal Kingdom, like any Disney park, has changed a lot. We’ve seen scores of additions like the Asia and Pandora expansions, new rides, and a big shift being planned, transforming Dinoland USA into an Encanto/Indiana Jones land.

Moana 2 has lived up to the hype and crossed the one billion mark worldwide, but it is still not the end for it. The Disney sequel has surpassed the Harry Potter movie and Alice in Wonderland to enter the top 50 highest-grossing films of all time list. Disney’s Moana 2 is still unstoppable despite clocking in over one billion worldwide. It is still minting a significant amount of money at the box office and has now surpassed Zootopia. It is set to beat Finding Dory’s global haul to enter the list of the top 10 highest-grossing animated movies of all time. Zootopia is an animated buddy cop comedy movie released in 2016. It was directed by Byron Howard and won the Best Animated Feature at the 89th Academy Awards. After Moana became a cult classic that skyrocketed in popularity thanks to the release of Disney+ in 2019, Disney made the right call by releasing Moana 2 in theaters as a full-length feature instead of sending it straight to Disney+ as a TV show, which was the original plan. Moana 2 joined Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2 as one of the only three movies to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office this weekend, with $442 million coming from domestic earnings and $567 coming from international earnings. This $1.09 billion box office total is enough to make Moana 2 one of the 15 highest-grossing PG movies ever at the global box office, ahead of Despicable Me 2 ($975 million) and Despicable Me 4 ($969 million), but still behind Finding Dory ($1.025 billion) and Zootopia ($1.025 billion).

Moana 2 keeps proving it has wind beneath its sails at the box office. As the Disney animated sequel reveals in joining the esteemed billion-dollar club, the film nears one more major financial milestone before its theatrical run ends.

Overall grosses for the 4-day period are expected to fall to $96-100 million, an 18% drop from last year. “Mufasa” is taking No. 1 with an estimated 4-day total of $15.5 million in its fifth weekend, which is the lowest No. 1 total seen on an MLK weekend since the unadjusted $14 million 4-day holdover total of the Brad Pitt/Anthony Hopkins western “Legends of the Fall” way back in 1995, according to Box Office Mojo.

The entertainment conglomerate is no stranger to billion-dollar movies, as their Walt Disney Animation Studios animated output has included Frozen ($1.27 billion), Zootopia ($1.02 billion), and Frozen II ($1.45 billion) while billion-dollar Walt Disney Studios movies include 2019's The Lion King ($1.661 billion), 2017's Beauty and the Beast ($1.27 billion), 2019's Aladdin ($1.05 billion), and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($1.07 billion). However, the company has put out even more billion-dollar titles thanks to its acquisitions of various studios.

Ahead of Zootopia 2's debut this year, Disney and Dynamite Comics are teaming up to deliver a new comic series that follows Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde’s police career. Crushing together the seriousness of a crime thriller with the aesthetic of Zootopia, the series’ creator hopes to create a humorous slice-of-life that expands on the lives of Judy and Nick. The process behind the series’ creation, however, has been tricky.

In an interview with Aipt Comics, the Zootopia series’ lead writer Jeff Parker opened up about the process behind creating this series as well as the challenges of creating a Disney comic. Parker is the same creative talent behind the Batman ‘66 comic series which adapted the original Batman television show starring Adam West.

Already an expert at adapting big-screen media to the pages of a comic, Zootopia is sure to be just as charming as the original film.

As the 2025 season kicks off, big things are expected from The Walt Disney Company. With new experiences at the Disney Parks, several Golden Globe nominations, and several new projects coming to theaters, Disney fans have a lot to look forward to.

That being said, a familiar pattern is brewing with Disney's cinematic calendar, and it doesn't exactly give us hope. As Disney prepares for this year's releases, only one project comes with any originality, and the company's success could hinge on it.
