With its list of new releases for June 2024, HBO streamer Max is finally headed back to Westeros.
The highlight of this month is undoubtedly the premiere of House of the Dragon season 2 on June 16. Episode 1 will drop on both HBO and Max that Sunday night at 9 p.m. Et. With the infamous Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons now underway, the next batch of episodes for this Game of Thrones prequel should be truly epic.
Arriving before House of the Dragon season 2 is another story of a fraught succession. Ren Faire, a documentary series about an ailing king retiring from the country’s largest renaissance festival, premieres on June 2. Other TV options this month include Julio Torres comedy Fantasmas on June 7 and docuseries One South: Portrait of a Psych Unit on June 25.

Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson will produce alongside Karczynski and David Prior.
“The vision behind Vent is unique and thrilling,” said Kosovo and Johnson, “and between Steven Karczynski’s incredible writing, and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s ability to bring such films to life, we are thrilled to be a part of bringing this story to screens.”

Exclusive: Arrow alumna Juliana Harkavy has been cast as a lead in ABC drama pilot L.A. Law, a revival of the iconic Steven Bochco legal drama. She joins original cast members Blair Underwood and Corbin Bernsen, who are reprising their roles as Jonathan Rollins and Arnie Becker, respectively, as well as fellow new series regulars Hari Nef, Toks Olagundoye, Ian Duff and John Harlan Kim.
In the pilot, written by Marc Guggenheim and Ubah Mohamed and to be directed by Anthony Hemingway, the venerable law firm of McKenzie Brackman — now named Becker Rollins — reinvents itself as a litigation firm specializing in only the most high-profile, boundary-pushing and incendiary cases.
Harkavy will play Yvette Cabrera, a savvy attorney and “legal badass” who is pitted against Alana (Nef) in an unexpectedly controversial case that makes headlines. Their courtroom battle is complicated by the fact that they used to be lovers. The...

When you’re a streaming service, there’s only one way to celebrate the New Year. And that’s by IP mining to bring back a franchise that had no business in coming back!
With its list of new releases for January 2022, Hulu is raiding CBS’s closet and premiering How I Met Your Father, a continuation of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Complaints about unnecessary rebooting aside, perhaps its worth giving the Hillary Duff starring series a chance. If nothing else, telling a story about 2022 from a future perspective might play well.
Aside from Himyf, there aren’t any other Hulu original series to speak of. Instead, Hulu is opting to once again beef up its film library. January 1 sees the arrival of Master and Commander, Seven, and a whole bunch of Star Treks. Hulu will also be the streaming home of some recently released film Indies,...

The star of the film Dolphin Tale, Winter the dolphin, has died from an illness. Tests earlier this week showed she was fighting a gastrointestinal infection that worsened, according to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. The bottle nose dolphin died on Thursday.
Winter, age 16, was being prepped for a procedure when her vital signs and behavior declined, the Florida aquarium wrote on its website. She died about 8 Pm, surrounded by her caretakers.
“While we are heartbroken by Winter’s death, we are comforted knowing that our team did everything possible to give her the best chance at survival. We worked with specialists and marine mammal experts from around the country to provide her with the best care available,” Dr. Shelly Marquardt said in the statement.
The dolphin was first noticed to be in distress on Nov. 1. She showed little interest in eating, and her symptoms intensified despite treatment.

Hopefully March will bring respite from crippling snow storms and frigid temperatures for much of the globe. And if it doesn’t? Well, Hulu’s got some new streaming options at least!
Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2021 are relatively slight on Hulu originals. Thankfully, one beloved original of note is coming back this month. Solar Opposites will premiere all episodes of its second season on March 26. This sci-fi animated comedy from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is a breath of fresh alien air.
On the movie side of things, Hulu is premiering Boss Level on March 5. This actioner will star the delightful Frank Grillo and the decidedly less delightful Mel Gibson. Speaking of delightful though, the documentary Kid 90 will arrive on March 12. This comes from Punky Brewster star Soleil Moon Frye and features hours of footage she shot in the ’90s that will depict what...

February may be the shortest month, but that doesn’t mean streaming services can ignore their duty to entertain us at all times. In that mission, Netflix is making a decent effort in February 2021. This isn’t the most jam-packed month the major streamer has trotted out just yet but there are plenty of new originals to get the job done.
Netflix has a few original series of note this month. The party begins with Kid Cosmic on Feb. 2. This animated series is a comic-tinged adventure from Craig McCracken, creator of the Powerpuff Girls. That’s followed by the Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl-starring Firefly Lane on Feb. 3 and Behind Her Eyes on Feb. 17. Perhaps the biggest sleeper this month, however, is Tribes of Europa. This post-apocalyptic adventure series premieres on Feb. 19.

Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog looks to keep things rolling this weekend as it faces incoming competition from 20th Century's The Call of the Wild and Stx's Brahms: The Boy II. Sonic will have no trouble holding on to the top spot following its strong start last weekend as it looks to top $110 million after just ten days in release.
Following a massive start last weekend, accompanied by solid critical reviews and audience response, Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog is looking at a another weekend atop the box office. We're anticipating a dip around -48% or so for a $30 millilon three-day. Should that forecast hold look for the film to top $110 million by the end of the weekend, on its way to becoming the third highest grossing video game adaptation domestically after just ten days in release.

No matter how many times you hear the story of Bethany Hamilton, the U.S. professional surfing icon whose left arm got bitten off by a tiger shark when she was 13, it exerts an emotional power that can’t be denied. At this point, however, the story is so familiar that it has taken on the quality of a larger-than-life American parable of tragedy and faith and perseverance and triumph. It’s been told on talk shows, on sports TV, in celebrity media, in Hamilton’s 2004 memoir, “Soul Surfer,” and in the not-bad Hollywood biopic that was made from it. So when you watch “Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable,” a documentary that recaps Hamilton’s life in compelling fashion without adding anything of special novelty or depth (though much of the surfing footage is spectacular), it can feel like you’re seeing a perfectly fine devotional sports biography that doesn’t elevate...

When it was confirmed in February that Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Rick Deckard in Alcon Entertainment's Blade Runner sequel, you may have immediately started wondering who would join him in the new neo-noir, as Deckard's sure to run into memorable characters of both the human and replicant varieties. Though we don't know who he'd play, it's been revealed that Ryan Gosling is in talks to star alongside Ford in Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner sequel that's slated to start shooting next summer:

After all these years, the story of Rick Deckard will continue. A Blade Runner sequel started to pick up steam back in 2011 when it was announced that Ridley Scott would return to direct. While Scott is still creatively involved, it has been revealed that he'll be passing the torch to another director. What is still a big surprise, even after his involvement in the latest Star Wars film, is that Harrison Ford is set to reprise his role as Deckard:

Deadline is reporting that at long last, the Blade Runner sequel has been confirmed, with Harrison Ford set to reprise his role as Rick Deckard. Unfortunately, Ridley Scott will not return as director, but in his place will be Prisoners helmer Denis Villeneuve.
The plan is for production to get underway in summer 2016 with Hampton Fancher (who co-wrote the original) and Michael Green penning the script. Plot details are, of course, scarce, but from what we understand the sequel will take place several decades after the events of the original (which makes sense given Ford’s age).
“We are honored that Harrison is joining us on this journey with Denis Villeneuve, who is a singular talent, as we experienced personally on Prisoners,” Alcon Entertainment’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson said. “Hampton and Michael, with Ridley Scott, have crafted a uniquely potent and faithful sequel to one of the most...

When a crew wraps on the shooting of a film, a cinematographer's work is still far from finished -- he has to color correct the whole thing. In this video, cinematographer Daryn Okada ("Mean Girls," "American Reunion,") demonstrates how he did the color correction for the film "Dolphin Tale 2." He compares the digital process to completing a piece of wooden furniture; once you've carved the shape and constructed the design you want, the piece still needs the color and varnish to give it a rich sheen. That's what Okada is doing with images. With color correction, a cinematographer can manipulate colors and contrasts, completely changing the light in an image. With split screens showing both the raw and final images from "Dolphin Tale 2," Okada shows how easily he is able to manipulate the time of day, add a glow in the sky, or simply make everything look more lush and appealing.

A combination of "Interstellar," "Godzilla," "The Lego Movie" and the early earnings of the final film in "The Hobbit" trilogy has helped push Warner Bros. Pictures past the $3 billion mark at the international box office in 2014. In fact, nine Warner Bros. releases in 2014 exceeded $100 million internationally.
This marks the second consecutive year that the studio has topped that mark and the seventh time it has exceeded $2 billion in foreign ticket sales. Foreign box office is one of the few bright spots for studios these days as it continues to grow whereas domestic revenues are down more than 5%.
"The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" ($574M), "Godzilla" ($524M), "The Lego Movie" ($468M) and "Interstellar" ($464M) were their biggest hits. When it comes to cultural impact, mega-sales and drama, this year’s Best Original Song category at the Academy Awards is going to have an awfully difficult time competing with last year’s category.
The 2013 winner, you might remember, was “Let It Go,” the anthem from “Frozen” that became a hit around the world and spawned a zillion amateur YouTube renditions.

This year's Best Original Song Oscar race hasn't really achieved much lift-off. Of course, the contenders have been obvious. "Lost Stars" from "Begin Again" may well be the best of them, though "Everything is Awesome" from "The Lego Movie" certainly has its punch-drunk fans. Elsewhere, though, there are a few popular artists in the mix. John Legend and Common put together a hell of a track for "Selma" called "Glory." Lana Del Rey is back in the mix with the title track from "Big Eyes." Coldplay even wants to, uh, play, with "Miracles" from "Unbroken." The Academy announced the list of 79 eligible contenders Friday afternoon, and many of them you've seen outlined clearly in our dedicated Contenders section for the category all season. Let's take a closer look… Animated players "The Book of Life" and "The Boxtrolls" each have a pair of ditties and "Big Hero 6" has one as well.

Guardians of the Galaxy Everyone loves Guardians of the Galaxy so I'm sure the DVD and Blu-ray release will be a big hit, but I'm just not interested. Once was enough for me, on to Guardians of the Galaxy 2: The One That Comes Before 3.
When the Game Stands One of those movies you forgot was even released and perhaps didn't even know about at all.
I Origins I still need to see I Origins, it looked like a good one.
Calvary If I were to make a recommendation, I would say watch John Michael McDonagh's The Guard first and then Calvary as I think it will help establish a tone for what kind of world McDonagh is working in, which is very similar to his brother's, though I would say a little darker. Here's a link to my review of Calvary if you're interested.

It's hard not to love - and be a little jealous - of Nathan Gamble, the star of both Dolphin Tale movies. After all, he gets to swim with dolphins and has forged a real life relationship with Winter, just like his character, Sawyer. In real life, his love of the outdoors and athletics goes beyond the water. Nathan loves to play football and, of course, watch football, too! He's a huge fan of the Seattle Seahawks and considers Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson among his personal heroes. Since Nathan is such a fan of the game, and we are now fully into football season, Nathan counts down his Top 5 Favorite Football Films:
1) Rudy. What's better than this classic underdog story? As I guy who has always wanted to play football but was not blessed with a freakish athletic body, I love seeing this flick and visualizing myself getting carried off that Notre Dame field.

The Complete Jacques Tati (Criterion Collection) Every year Criterion seems to put together a collection of films that stands above the rest. Last year it was the Zatoichi collection of films, this year they celebrate Jacques Tati with a collection of his six feature films -- Jour de fecte, Monsieur Hulot's Holiday, Mon oncle, PlayTime, Trafic and Parade -- along with seven Tati-related short films. Unfortunately I was not sent a review copy, but once the Barnes & Noble, 50% off Criterion sale rolls around next month I think I'll have to add this one to my Christmas request list the same way I did with Zatoichi last year. As for my thoughts on the films, I personally love Hulot's Holiday and PlayTime, the latter of which you can read my review of the previous Criterion Blu-ray edition here, though as DVD Beaver has already shown, the transfer on this new release looks much different.

Brad Pitt's Fury was able to usurp first place from Gone Girl this weekend, though it was a closer race than anticipated.Meanwhile, Birdman opened at four locations in New York and Los Angeles and scored one of the best per-theater averages ever for a live-action movie.Opening at 3,173 theaters, Fury rolled in to first place this weekend with $23.7 million. This debut is in the same general ballpark as movies like Captain Phillips ($25.7 million), Act of Valor ($24.5 million) and The Monuments Men ($22 million). That's a fine range to be in, though it's a bit disappointing considering how far off it is from recent R-rated thrillers Gone Girl ($37.5 million) and The Equalizer ($34.1 million).Sony's marketing played up Fury's intense tank-on-tank action, which made it a strong option among male moviegoers. Unfortunately, the movie never really connected with women, who wound up accounting for just 40 percent of the audience on opening weekend.

After holding off Annabelle’s possessed doll in a photo finish at the box office last week, Gone Girl faces a new round of challengers in what could be another tight race, this time pitting the David Fincher-Ben Affleck thriller against Robert Downey Jr., Dracula and one peeved kid. And while the field is becoming overcrowded with fall entries, the race should help continue the box office’s rebound from a dismal September.
Although it’s taken some hits from critics as a typical courtroom drama, The Judge has wattage in the form of Downey and Robert Duvall. The $50 million pic from Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow, though, could be the season’s first victim of the overcrowded field. Like Gone Girl, it’s an R-rated drama starring a comic-book movie superhero. But it lacks the public chatter of Gone Girl, and could be cannibalized by adult competition.

Updated Monday, 2:01 p.m: Gone Girl eked a weekend win over Annabelle in one of the most hotly contested races of the year — and one in which there was no loser. Both movies clocked in above $35 million, the first time that’s happened since early August.
By the thinnest of margins, the David Fincher-Ben Affleck thriller beat The Conjuring spinoff by about $400k, a virtual tie. And considering Annabelle sported a $6.5 million budget, the New Line venture likely will prove the more profitable investment. Not that Fox is going to complain: Given that Gone Girl scored $10 million more than most projections, the bestseller adaptation is well suited for a fall Oscar run in theaters. Fox plans to roll the drama out on more screens this weekend.
