Because of his religious beliefs, Neal McDonough has refused to play romantic roles and has consistently refused to kiss anyone other than his wife, Ruve McDonough. For this film, Ruve is shown in flashbacks playing the wife of his character, making this McDonough's first kiss scene being between him and his wife.

Neal McDonough and Mykelti Williamson previously starred alongside each other in season 3 of the TV series Justified.
The idea for this film came to McDonough when he was driving home from work and thought about what would happen to his life if he lost his wife Ruve. After pulling over to process this thought, he was hit with the idea of a film project which he described as "'Rocky' on a bull," and began writing the screenplay which would eventually become this film.
