On March 20, ABC staged a fun crossover event between Thursday night dramas 911 and Doctor Odyssey which saw 911’s Angela Bassett teaming up with The Odyssey crew to stop a heist from unfolding. It was fun getting to see Bassett’s Athena mingling with the cast of Doctor Odyssey in a crossover that truly felt effortless in the way in which Athena’s presence was woven into the Casino Week theme.
It was a fun crossover between the two shows, but the 911 crossover magic didn’t stop with Doctor Odyssey!
In the eleventh episode of Grey’s Anatomy, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” ABC staged a seemingly unplanned 911 crossover… well with a twist.

9-1-1‘s Athena Grant boarded Doctor Odyssey on Thursday amid Casino Week catastrophe — but did she fold under the pressure of her prior cruise trauma?
As 9-1-1 fans know, the last time Athena (played by Angela Bassett) stepped foot on a ship, it sank to the bottom of the ocean after being hijacked and blown up by terrorists. Which begs the question: Why would she embark on another sea voyage at all?

The latest episode of Doctor Odyssey brought about a fun mini-crossover with 911 as Angela Bassett’s Athena Grant found herself hitting the high seas once again.
As the eleventh episode of 911 came to a close, Athena responded to a call from the FBI that led her to the port where The Odyssey was docked. Early in episode 11 of Doctor Odyssey’s first season, we find Athena trapped in a closet on the boat with a maid. Needless to say, she’s not excited about being stuck on a boat again. So how did Athena end up trapped on the ship?
While being checked out in the medical bay by Max, Athena tells him how she got a call from the FBI about picking up a man attempting to board the ship with a fake passport who had an AI-powered safe-cracking device. After taking the man into custody, she...

Angela Bassett’s “9-1-1” character Athena Grant takes an unexpected cruise aboard the Odyssey Thursday, as two Ryan Murphy-created ABC shows cross over for the first time.
The no-nonsense LAPD sergeant is called in to prevent a possible robbery during the ship’s Casino Week and the investigation — which includes glamming it up in beautiful gowns — takes longer than she expects.
Bassett and “Doctor Odyssey” star Joshua Jackson, who plays dashing Dr. Max Bankman, teased what we can expect. “It’s our ‘Ocean’s 11’ episode with a heist,” said Jackson, who described it as a “return to the happy side of the show” after a tense two-parter with multiple shark attacks.
Both stars said the show is a nice break from the chaos of real life — including the recent LA wildfires that claimed Jackson’s home — and from the more hectic pace of filming “9-1-1.”

Who would have ever thought that Athena Grant would step back on a cruise ship? Well, she does in Doctor Odyssey season 1, episode 11, putting 911 and Doctor Odyssey into the same universe.
It’s a matter of duty for Athena in the new episode. A situation on the ship pulls her in, but she’s sure to regret the decision. To be honest, maybe we should get a 911 crossover via Maddie and Chimney or Hen and Karen and have them get a vacation while the kids run around the kids sections. There are many opportunities.

9-1-1 star Oliver Stark has addressed Buck's scrapped Doctor Odyssey cameo, revealing how he almost showed up in the crossover episode. In season 1, episode 13 of the medical drama, Angela Bassett's Athena Grant-Nash will briefly appear on the cast of Doctor Odyssey, investigating a crime on their cruise ship. Her involvement will center around protecting the ship's vault for passengers that want to break into it. It's not her character's first time on a cruise ship, either, having survived when one she was on sank during 9-1-1 season 7.
Speaking with ScreenRant, however, Stark addressed how his character, Buck, was supposed to have a cameo in the Doctor Odyssey crossover episode. The actor explained how he'd agreed to the idea before behind-the-scenes changes made it so Athena would be the only character to show up. He said he can make an "educated guess" about what his story would...

It’s mixed feelings galore for fans of the 9-1-1 franchise.
There’s so much happening right now that our collective heads are spinning. For some asinine reason, Athena is moonlighting on Doctor Odyssey, 9-1-1: Lone Star literally went down in flames (and radiation), and we discovered that instead of wowing us with something new, the latest spinoff will take place in Nashville.
Yee-haw, hee-haw, and all that fun stuff, but while the mother series appears to be doing well enough and even thriving to the point of needing to lend a hand to that sinking ship that is Doctor Odyssey, the latter two points remain a frustrating point of contention.
(Kevin Estrada/Fox) We’re Already Wary of 9-1-1: Nashville’s Location
We’ve barely buried 9-1-1: Lone Star after they delivered one of a series’s most disappointing, unsatisfying final seasons in quite some time.

Angela Bassett is saying what we’ve all been thinking about 911’s Athena popping up on Doctor Odyssey and why her on-screen husband won't be joining her!
ABC is no stranger to TV crossovers. We’ve seen it a lot between Grey’s Anatomy and its spinoffs like Station 19. Likewise, The Rookie had a few with its short-lived spin-off The Rookie: Feds. However, one of the most unusual is coming on Thursday, March 20 as 911’s Athena (Angela Bassett) boards Doctor Odyssey for an appearance.
Would Athena really step on a cruise again in 911?
For many fans, the big question isn’t how the two shows connect. It’s why in the hell Athena would ever want to board a boat again. When 911 moved to ABC from Fox in 2024, it opened with an epic three-part Season 7 premiere when Athena and husband Bobby (Peter Krause) went on a...

9-1-1: Nashville is moving along much faster than I anticipated.
The latest entry in the 9-1-1 franchise has barely been announced in a month, and we already have our leading man.
Chris O’Donnell, best known for playing Special Agent in Charge Grisha “G” Callen on NCIS: Los Angeles, has lassoed the lead role on the forthcoming offshoot.
(Courtesy of CBS)
He’ll play Captain Don Sharpe, “a rugged fire captain and rodeo rider who runs Nashville’s busiest firehouse with his beloved son,” according to the official character description.
“Don’s a devoted husband and family man, but he has his secrets.”
(Michael Yarish/CBS)
The lead character being male and having many secrets sounds very similar to 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star’s leading men, so I hope the Nashville-set spinoff takes things in a different direction.

Chris O’Donnell, who starred in NCIS: Los Angeles, is joining an offshoot of the ABC drama that will take place in a new location, Nashville, Tennessee. Despite 9-1-1: Lone Star failing to get off the ground, it seems the network is keen on making 9-1-1 a multi-series universe. It certainly helps to do that by adding one of the genre's most familiar faces.
According to Variety, O'Donnell will lead 9-1-1-: Nashville as Captain Don Sharpe, “a rugged fire captain and rodeo rider who runs Nashville’s busiest firehouse with his beloved son. Don’s a devoted husband and family man but he has his secrets.” The ABC series was announced in February and is set to premiere during the 2025-2026 broadcast season. It is unclear...

On March 20, the worlds of 9-1-1 and Doctor Odyssey will collide with a crossover episode on the latter ABC drama series. Ahead of the crossover, 9-1-1 star Oliver Stark has shared why he hopes the show's next crossover will be with the Nathan Fillion-led The Rookie.
Speaking with TV Fanatic, Stark — who has portrayed firefighter Evan "Buck" Buckley on 9-1-1 since its 2018 premiere — shared that he really wanted to pop up on another television series, remarking with a laugh that he would go on "as many as they’ll have me in." The actor then noted how "The Rookie seems like an obvious and easy crossover" given that both shows are set in Los Angeles, "so that seems to make sense to me that there could be some mass casualty event that all the police stations and all the firehouses are at."

The cast ofDoctor Odyssey has answered a major question regarding the upcoming crossover with 9-1-1. ABC is home to both 9-1-1 and Doctor Odyssey, two hit procedural series from creator Ryan Murphy. His latest medical drama will see 9-1-1's Sergeant Athena Grant-Nash (Angela Bassett) joining Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) and his team on board The Odyssey to investigate a potential heist of the luxury ship's vault during Casino Week. The ABC crossover event will air March 26, and feature Jackson and Bassett alongside Sean Teale, Don Johnson, and Philipa Soo.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Rachel Foertsch, the Doctor Odyssey cast discussed how the crossover will address Athena's return to a cruise ship, considering her harrowing experience in 9-1-1's season 7, where she and her husband Bobby narrowly survived a sinking cruise liner. The Odyssey is going to become the scene of a safe heist on Thursday’s (March 20) “Casino Week” episode of Doctor Odyssey, and 9-1-1‘s Angela Bassett will be bringing Athena’s detective skills to bear for the onboard investigation. The request for her presence, as the look-ahead teaser reveals, will come from Don Johnson‘s Capt. Robert Massey as the ship becomes a gambler’s paradise off the coast of Los Angeles. For Johnson, the opportunity to work with Bassett has been a long time coming. “We’ve known each other a long time, but we’ve never gotten to work together. And she was joyful,” he told TV Insider. “When you get Angela to set, you go, ‘Okay, I’m just gonna take her hand and let her lead this dance,’ and she’s a pretty good dancer.” Of course, considering what happened last time she was...

While CBS has made some big moves in the 2024–2025 TV season, other networks have not. ABC has opted not to cancel or renew too many of its lineup. Granted, that's partly because some shows didn't arrive until January 2025, but there are still many ABC shows on the bubble.
At the time of writing this, only High Potential and Abbott Elementary have been renewed. ABC's schedule is a little light when it comes to scripted shows, but there are still six on the bubble. Which ones are likely to be renewed, and which ones are at risk of cancellation?
ABC shows likely canceled: The Rookie, Grey's Anatomy
I hate to say it, but there are two scripted shows that are most at risk at the moment. The Rookie and Grey's Anatomy are the least-watched scripted shows this year. I had hoped that The Rookie's move to the earlier timeslot would help,...

A new kind of danger boards The Odyssey during "Casino Week." The ship is casino-themed in the March 20 episode as guests engage their best gambling instincts in the high seas. Maybe that will be what makes their luck. However, not everyone on board is here to play, at least not casino games. In Doctor Odyssey Season 1, Episode 15, Detective Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) from 9-1-1 boards the ship, but contrary to what happened in Season 7 of 9-1-1, she's here on business, not for pleasure. Her cruise went south and she would do anything in her power to ensure two suspects she's after don't ruin it for the guests on The Odyssey. According to the logline below for the episode airing next week at 9 p.m. Et, Athena and the ship's crew play a different game than everyone else.

Doctor Odyssey’s orca attack is rather poetic: Just as a pod of killer whales known to organize according to a matriarchal structure rocks the boat, the ABC sudser’s primary female character begins drowning in her own abstraction.
Picking up after last week’s power outage, Thursday’s episode sees the medical staff calling for an evacuation of its shark-attack victims in order to continue their care. As the most experienced nurse, Avery prepares to travel alongside her patients in the middle of the night to seek refuge — and electricity. But as she packs her bags, Max steps in...

Film and TV production happens fast. Even a series as blown about by the waves as “Doctor Odyssey” needs to navigate between the Scylla of ocean exteriors and Charybdis of network procedural turnarounds. The visual effects team, led by VFX supervisor Jason Piccioni, has only about a week and a half per episode. So on the midseason two-parter, “Shark Attack,” they needed to be very strategic about when, how, and why we see the titular predators from the deep blue sea.
That specific challenge got the IndieWire Craft team thinking about how lean and mean you could get a VFX setup to create the shark that kamikaze-swims into the Odyssey’s propeller, the orcas that ram its hull, and the menacing fins that circle in the dark waters while our hero medics are (improbably) out in a support boat.
Piccioni told IndieWire that they worked with FuseFX for the show’s ambitious two-parter — indeed,...

For 20 years, Grey's Anatomy has dominated the medical genre on television. People love good drama intermixed with extravagant medical cases. It became such an icon that many medical shows had to follow suit. Ryan Murphy's newest series, Doctor Odyssey, is an intriguing concept itself, centered on a small team of healthcare workers on a luxury cruise who become a throuple. St. Denis Medical revolutionizes the drama by framing it as a mockumentary sitcom. But the thing that is missing in the current era of medical shows is the serious stakes that come with the healthcare profession. Max's The Pitt changes that.

It’s everyone’s worst nightmare when they’re on a boat. The Odyssey is dead in the water with sharks all around them. Is there any hope in Doctor Odyssey season 1, episode 10?
The series returned from its winter break with an intense episode that involved sharks and orcas. With multiple people needing life-saving surgery, the Great White taking out all the electrical systems is an absolute nightmare. Captain Massey makes it clear that not only can they not get out of the waters, but they also can’t send a distress signal.
It’s going to be up to some of the Odyssey’s own to put their lives on the line to save the day. It’s only a two-hour boat ride, so it should be fine, right?

Thursday nights are a whole lot better, but that’s not going to last for long this month. Take a look at the packed broadcast schedule tonight, Thursday, March 13.
We are getting into March Madness season. That means CBS shows will be off the air on Thursdays and Fridays for a couple of weeks. This will allow other networks to take over, as they continue to air their regular schedules.
3 shows to watch on broadcast tonight, and 2 to skip
With only a few hours available on a night, you need to plan out your schedule well. That means picking shows to watch live, and then choosing the ones to hold off for the next day. Or maybe you can stay up an extra hour to catch something.
One to watch right away is 911 on ABC. This episode will pick up off the big reveal at the end of the previous episode.

Networks are handing out cancelations like hot cakes. NBC and CBS have pulled the plug on several of different shows over the last year. Something we've noticed is that a lot of these shows are actually spinoffs of shows that are still on the air.
The Rookie: Feds is no more, but The Rookie is fine. 9-1-1: Lone Star was cut off at the knees, even though 9-1-1 is thriving and crossing over with Doctor Odyssey. FBI is the latest and biggest example as two spinoffs, Most Wanted and International have been canceled by CBS.
There's an interesting tension that arises when these cancelations occur. Those involved with the flagship shows lament their spinoff's demise, and suggest that characters could be brought over from the spinoff and incorporated into their show, at least for a couple of episodes. It adds up on paper, and makes the sense...

At a glance, Don Johnson and Below Deck’s Captain Lee Rosbach seem alike. Both men rock a salt-and-pepper look. They’re also the self-proclaimed “Stud of the Sea,” according to fans of both shows. But did Captain Lee inspire Don John’s character as Captain Massey on Doctor Odyssey?
Heavy Debate
The cast debated about this possibility in an interview with Us Weekly. After all, Below Deck came out long before Doctor Odyssey chartered the waters. The show’s star, Joshua Jackson, delivered a hot take. He believes that Captain Massey inspired others like Captain Lee.
“I’m about to pay you a compliment here,” Jackson told Johnson. “I think that the Stud of the Sea studied Don Johnson. Don did not study the Stud of the Sea.” We could see Captain Lee giving off Crockett vibes. He does like a suit without socks. Johnson agreed with Jackson’s sentiment.
