Episode three was the first to be shot. It was newcomer Owen Cooper's first time on a set.
How they filmed the aerial scene: The DOP carries the camera and follows a school pupil to the traffic lights with a wide shot as she goes at the end of the school day. Before she crosses the road, a team attach the camera to a drone, which then flies a distance of 0.3 miles across the site to the murder scene, where it comes down to the same camera operator and a team of grips who smoothly catch the camera and transition into a close shot of Stephen Graham. Once the camera was attached to the drone, the camera operator immediately got into a white van to be taken to the murder scene and pick up the camera again when the drone lands. The van is visible from the drone shot on the road and pulling into the car park.
Each episode is filmed as a single continuous take.
Owen Cooper's (Jamie Miller) debut acting role. Stephen Graham was so impressed at his first audition, that he turned to co-writer Jack Thorne when Cooper left the room and said 'I think that's him'. The acting skills he learned only came from attending The Drama Mob theatre group once a week, which was co-founded by Coronation Street star Tina O'Brien. He is next set to appear as young Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights (2026), alongside Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.
Every episode had three weeks of production time, with the last week being for filming. Because of this, five days were allowed for filming the final product, with two allowed per day. Episode 1 was completed on only the second take; the other three were completed on the last one.
