With this year's Overlook Film Festival lurking around the corner in New Orleans April 3rd–6th, the festival has announced its anticipated full schedule, including free horror trivia that Daily Dead is proud to sponsor for the third year in a row!

Hosted by Shudder's Sam Zimmerman and once again taking place at B Mac's, horror trivia will kick off at 4:30pm on Friday, April 4th, and we look forward to having Daily Dead readers join us at the scary good event!

As if the upcoming edition of the Overlook Film Festival , taking place April 3 – April 6 in New Orleans, Louisiana, wasn’t stacked enough, the festival announced today the full schedule, including some surprise new films and live events.

The new additions to the lineup bring the festival total to 56 films (34 features and 22 shorts) from 15 countries, as well as twelve live events and four immersive experiences, making this the largest Overlook lineup in the festival’s nine year history.

Screenlife movies and producer Timur Bekmambetov go together like wine and cheese. An off-shoot of found footage, films in this category take place entirely on computer and/or phone screens, a formal premise that, in its brief history — since the 2002 experiment “The Collingswood Story” — has evolved in remarkable ways. Bekmambetov has produced horror (“Unfriended”), dramatic thrillers (“Searching”) and even Shakespeare (“R#J”) in this mode, and with the Ronan Corrigan-directed “LifeHack,” the genre now moves dauntlessly into heist movie territory. Your mileage may vary, but for fans of the format, it’s an absolute treat.

Traditionally, heist films involve slick, seasoned professionals moving through space, towards one defined target, like the vault in “Ocean’s 11.” However, the age of cryptocurrency and digital wallets allows the debuting Corrigan to flip these expectations on their head, via a tale of four lonely teenagers with something to prove. Watching Ronan Corrigan’s LifeHack transported me back to South by Southwest 2015, where I saw the premiere of Leo Gabriadze’s Unfriended. I sat there enamored by what would become a landmark kickstart for the screenlife horror movement, hypnotized by its organic application of screen-locked cinematography. Corrigan’s devotion to authenticity feels similarly meticulous, a testament to the reported five years it took to produce his feature debut, LifeHack, which shot in a breakneck 10 days. The next generation of filmmakers emerges, wooing audiences with a screen-locked heist thriller that reminds of The Perfect Score but with graver stakes.

Screenlife filmmaking, the process of telling a cinematic story entirely through characters’ computer screens, is the kind of gimmick that’s usually bad in theory and is worse in practice. There are smart exceptions, but the pandemic year we spent watching mediocre television produced over Zoom and the amount of time many of us are still professionally obligated to spend on video calls is enough to make watching them for pleasure sound like a daunting proposition.

The format is best known for the films “Unfriended” and “Searching,” both of which were produced by Timur Bekmambetov, who has gone all in on Screenlife storytelling.
