Beneath the Storm, the shark thriller from Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola, is now swimming into a 2026 release along with an updated title, Shiver, Deadline reports.
Shiver was originally set to release this summer on August 1. Now, the film is taking up prime real estate for shark horror by swimming into Independence Day weekend on July 3, 2026.
The holiday weekend calls the mother of all shark horror movies to mind: Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. The summer blockbuster turns 50 this year and famously took place over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, where a great white shark terrorized the beachside town of Amity.
Phoebe Dynevor (Fair Play), Whitney Peak (Hocus Pocus 2) and Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place: Part II) star in Shiver, produced by Adam McKay and Kevin Messick.
Plot details remain under wraps, of course, though the film’s new title is intriguing.

After a decade of making short films, Sean Byrne made his feature directorial debut with the captivating and disturbing 2009 horror film The Loved Ones. We had to wait several years for his second movie, but it was worth the wait: The Devil’s Candy, which had its festival premiere in 2015 but didn’t get a wide release until 2017, was another great horror film. Now, Byrne has finally made his third feature, a shark thriller called Dangerous Animals, and IFC Films is gearing up to give it a theatrical release on June 6th. With that date drawing near, a teaser trailer has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
After the theatrical run, Dangerous Animals will be making its way over to the Shudder streaming service.
Byrne wrote both The Loved Ones and The Devil’s Candy, but for Dangerous Animals he was working from a script by Nick Lepard.

Berlin’s European Film Market wraps up Wednesday with a handful of deals and a touch of optimism over the future of the international industry.
The biggest title of the market, the Lena Dunham-directed rom-com Good Sex, set to star Natalie Portman, kicked off a studio bidding war, with Amazon, Warner Bros., Netflix and Apple all vying for the project, which sees Portman play a 40-year-old relationship therapist who finds herself back on the market after the exit of her long-term partner. Worldwide offers are reportedly in the $45 million-plus range, but there’s no news yet of a final deal.
Most of the deals reported were smaller domestic pickups of international art house features, with Sony Pictures Classics taking North American and Latin American rights to Rebecca Zlotowski’s French-language murder mystery Vie Privée, starring Jodie Foster as a psychiatrist investigating a patient’s death. Goodfellas has also sold the project across Europe,...

It’s all quiet on the Berlin deals front as the sales agencies wind down their operations at the European Film Market. By Monday, many offices and stands were almost completely deserted. Deals are being reported but it’s more of a “steady flow” than a gush. That said, most sales agents remain happy that the EFM continues to be an “efficient” place to do business.
AGC Studios’ Stuart Ford tells Variety, “Overseas business has been very solid. International buyers are taking their time, but we’ve been seeing a steady flow of deals closing and fully expect that trend to continue apace, particularly on Bill Condon’s ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ and Noah Hawley’s ‘Nowhere Fast.’”

Australian indie horror director Sean Byrne has a new shark attack film that has struck global distribution deals. Dubbed a "shark-meets-serial-killer" movie, the film will see a shark-obsessed serial killer (Suicide Squad's Jai Courtney) abduct a free-spirited surfer named Zephyr, played by Hassie Harrison (Yellowstone). He takes her out to sea in a boat, where she has to figure out how to escape before he "ritualistically feeds her to the sharks below," according to the plot. Joining the cast is Josh Heuston (Dune: Prophecy), who will play Zephyr's boyfriend, Moses. It sounds like a clever plot.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the film was shot last year on the Gold Coast of Australia, and was written by newcomer, Nick Lepard, who also wrote Keeper, Osgood Perkins' new film following The Monkey. The majority of the theatrical rights to the international market have already been sold by Mister Smith Entertainment.

Norwegian Violent Night director Tommy Wirkola has something other than holiday fear in store this year. As opposed to the blood-fueled, action-packed horror film that made its mark in the snow in 2022, Wirkolas new thriller will come splashing into theaters in 2025. Shark thriller Beneath the Storm is anticipated to be just as bloody and violent as his previous box office hit Violent Night, but with a seasonal switch-up thats different from Wirkolas other work.
Per Variety, Beneath the Storm will be released by Columbia Pictures and stars Phoebe Dynevor, Whitney Peak, and Djimon Hounsou. Adam McKay and Kevin Messik will serve as the producers. Besides Violent Night, Wirkola is perhaps best known for directing films like Dead Snow, What Happened to Monday, and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. His most recent animated feature-length film, Spermageddon, was a hit at the 2024 Annecy Animation Festival.

Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Dead Snow, Violent Night) is headed into the open waters for a shark attack horror movie that’s been newly titled Beneath the Storm, and we’ve learned that it’s swimming our way next year.
Columbia Pictures will release Beneath the Storm in theaters August 1, 2025.
Phoebe Dynevor (Fair Play), Whitney Peak (Hocus Pocus 2) and Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place: Part II) star in Beneath the Storm, produced by Adam McKay and Kevin Messick.
Plot details, at this time, are still under wraps. Stay tuned for more.
Wirkola’s project is one of many new shark attack movies in the works, with Lizzy Greene starring in High Tide and Sean Byrne directing Dangerous Animals, to name just a couple.
The prospect of a shark attack movie directed by Tommy Wirkola is particularly exciting, however, as Wirkola’s movies are always wildly entertaining and extremely bloody.

Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Dead Snow, Violent Night) is headed into the open waters for an untitled shark attack horror movie, The Insneider exclusively reports this week. That scoop has been confirmed by Variety, with the site also reporting that Phoebe Dynevor (Fair Play) is in talks to star in the upcoming movie.
Adam McKay and Kevin Messick will produce the untitled movie for Sony, with Variety noting that production is expected to take place this coming summer in Australia.
“Plot details are being kept under wraps,” the site also notes.

“Everything shut down,” said Brian Beckmann, the CFO and COO of Arclight Films, which is selling international rights to the film. “We were in this position where we had spent all this money and secured all this talent and we weren’t sure we could move forward until the strikes were over.”
