Keiichiro Saito, the director of Bocchi the Rock! season 1, has revealed the reasons behind his decision to step down for the anime’s second season.
Speaking during the special Bocchi the Radio! edition released after the Kessoku Band Tour “We will B” live event, Saito explained that he felt the pressure of meeting fan expectations.
Saito stated that he had no plans for a sequel while directing season 1 and felt that season 2 required a stronger focus on music and performances, something he believed was best handled by someone else.
He felt Bocchi the Rock! season 2 was a big challenge and admitted that simply trying to replicate season 1’s success could lead to disappointment.
While he was excited by the opportunity, he also recognized the toll the production had taken on the staff and realized that simply repeating the same production model wouldn’t work.

Bocchi the Rock! recently released its first compilation film, Bocchi the Rock! Re:, and its already become a major success. Not only did it place first at the Japanese box office in its opening weekend, but with an opening weekend of over 210 million yen, it had one of the biggest debuts for a compilation film, something made even more impressive by there being little to no new footage.
Bocchi the Rock! is a massive success even at the box office, and that serves as more proof that it deserves a second season. Despite how popular Bocchi the Rock! has been with fans and critics alike, almost two years have gone by without any word of it receiving a second season. There are probably some outside factors that have gone into that, but regardless, the success of Bocchi the Rock! Re: shows that Bocchi the Rock! will only grow in popularity,...

Two years following Bocchi the Rocks premiere, the franchise has finally received a new major installment in the film duology of Bocchi the Rock! Re: and Bocchi the Rock! Re:Re: The films serve as a compilation of the original anime, and while released as separate films in Japan, they were presented as a double feature in other territories for a limited time.
Anime compilation films have a reputation for being redundant additions to their franchises, and while they dont do as much to flesh out or change the original story compared to projects like the Code Geass trilogy or the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann film duology, Bocchi the Rock! Re: and Bocchi the Rock! Re:Re: still stand out thanks to their stellar animation, direction, and a few notable additions to the original story. Much more could have been done, but fortunately, theres still plenty to like for old and new fans alike.

According to Kogyo Tsushinsha, the film ranked 7th at the domestic box office for the weekend of Aug 30 to Sep 1, 2024.

The money difference is due to ticket prices for Anpanman being lower for its target audience, settling at around an average of 1,000 yen for three to six-year-olds.
