Based on a dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Etorouji Shiono. Shiono originally published the manga in three chapters in Gangan YG (now Young Gangan) in January 2004, later published as Übel Blatt 0 (Ubel Blatt 0). The dark fantasy manga continued in the magazine in December 2004 and ran until November 2009. Following a two-year hiatus, the manga resumed in Big Gangan in December 2011 and ended in March 2019.

Square Enix published the 23rd and final volume in June 2019. The third issue also published the first chapter of the Übel Blatt II: Shiseru Ou no Kishidan sequel manga on Saturday February 24, 2024.

Enjoyable story and characters, but terrible animation.

I give it a 7 because I think the characters, story, and serious nature of the anime make it worth watching, but the animation is pretty bad, which is a damn shame. It really deserves better. Ascheriit's story and character development feel reminiscent of other, similar dark manga/anime (Berserk comes to mind) and he's coupled with some cool powers and skill. His journey of revenge does leave you wanting more as he carves his way through the heroes, but the anime pairs this with cheap animation that mostly consists of PowerPoint slides, lots of yelling, and cheaply animated backgrounds. It's pretty bad and confounding that such a great story and cast would get this kind of treatment. If you can get over how bad the animation is, you might enjoy this series.
