Romance in the House is one of those K-dramas that comes and goes without notice. While occasionally a little bit dated, it delivers a simple message at the end of the day: it doesn’t matter how long it takes; once you find your groove, things will be okay. As a country obsessed with family and family values, it is interesting to see the shift in how that is represented in mainstream media recently. I started noticing the shift with the show “My Unfamiliar Family,” which is a fantastic show that leans into feminism in the most subtle way to appeal to the Korean audience while also changing their perspective on the lives of women after a certain age. Romance in the House is essentially trying to do the same and cast a lens on families that don’t live in the quintessential way but are still harmonious and happy—the ultimate goal.

With Romance in the House on its second last episode, a lot of doors are shutting, so we can see a happy ending for the Byeon family. The question that we all had on our minds has finally been answered, and as expected, Moo-Jin hasn’t done anything “wrong” to acquire the building, but we still don’t know where he got his money from. The show, which tells the story of a broken family, finally appears to be getting to a positive ending for them. Romance in the House definitely had some misses in between, and even now, I think some bits are quite old-fashioned because, at the end of the day, the show focuses on family values and how that’s still at the base of everything, even with modern-day problems. With that said, let’s quickly dive into the latest episodes.

Romance in the House presents the story of a fractured family and a father striving to fix his past mistakes. Though the show offers plenty of lighthearted moments, it leans heavily on shock value to keep viewers engaged. The narrative centers largely around Mi-Rae, the eldest daughter, who has shouldered the burden of her parents’ separation and her father’s sudden return after years of absence. As the responsible older sibling, Mi-Rae took on the caretaker role, inadvertently leaving her younger brother to navigate life independently. This emotional distance between him and the two women in the family has led him to side with his father—someone who, at least in his eyes, seems to genuinely care for him.

There’s something about Romance in the House that makes it feel rather old school and a little bit tone-deaf. There are parts in this show that make me cringe, but not in the way that you want to embrace it, more like in the way you want to stop watching this show. Though I don’t hate it, and there are some things that are fun, like Ae-Yeon’s determination to stay away from her ex-husband—only that’s the whole point of this show—for them to get back together. Anyway, we’re at the midway point of this show now, and I guess the comedy is getting more comedic and the plot a little dense, which I personally don’t love. But alas, this is what we get sometimes, even when you’ve got 3 global idols in your show. So let’s just dive into the special...

Romance in the House is one of those K-dramas that you can watch when you don’t want anything on your mind. It’s chilled out yet dramatic and has some random comedic moments that don’t necessarily land but might still be entertaining. By episode 4, it looks like romance is truly blooming in the neighborhood. So, I’m guessing as the show progresses, it’s going to get more fun, even in terms of the mystery. With that said, let’s quickly dive into everything that happened in the 3rd and 4th episodes.

Why Is The Neighborhood Afraid Of Moo-Jin?
Episode 3 of Romance in the House begins with Moo-Jin getting kicked in the face by Tae-Pyeong. Tae-Pyeong is a Taekwondo teacher, so it’s likely the kick hurt. Though Mi-Rae quite enjoyed seeing her dad get kicked, she didn’t want the whole neighborhood to learn about it.

Romance in the House tells the story of the Byeon family, whose lives become intertwined once more with unexpected reunions. At the center are Mi-rae, a devoted daughter and employee, and her mother, Ae-yeon. They’ve faced many challenges over the years to make a home for themselves and Mi-rae’s younger brother. But recent events leave their living situation uncertain.
When a mysterious fire claims the life of their landlord, they learn their apartment building has been sold to a new owner. More shockingly, this owner turns out to be someone from their past—Ae-yeon’s ex-husband Moo-jin, whom they believed was long gone. His sudden reemergence stirs old emotions as the family works to find understanding.
In the midst of these domestic changes, new bonds also form. As Mi-rae dedicates herself tirelessly to caring for others, a caring security guard named Tae-pyung shows her kindness. Could their connection...

Romance in the House may have started off on the right foot, but suddenly, I’m finding it a little bit too silly for it to work, especially as a weekend drama, replacing the highly successful Miss Night and Day. The show follows Mi-Rae, a young woman whose father has apparently died after being thrown out of the house, leaving her to feed her mom and little brother. Mi-Rae’s shocked to learn that her father’s actually alive and well, in fact, very well, in the first episode of the show. Romance in the House stars Shinee’s Minho, Apink’s Na-Eun, and Astro’s San-Ha, making it three different idols in one show, but will this pull enough of an audience? I hope the show manages to give us a successful middle-age drama, because in these cases, the romance is often lost in slapstick comedy or plain old prejudice,...

Another year and another Korean drama with the word “romance” in it. Personally, off the top of my head, I can think of two others I’ve seen in recent years, Romance Is A Bonus Book (a title that’s going to keep popping into my mind while I write about Romance in the House) and Crash Course on Romance. Now, while the first of these is an age-gap romance where the woman is older, the second one is also targeted at an older demographic. Is romance just for the middle-aged? Obviously not, but I find it mildly amusing that the common factor in these three shows is the word “romance” and that they’re all middle-age romances. Anyway, Romance in the House is about Geum Ye-Yeon and her little family. Well, mainly about her and her elder daughter. The show stars two idols as siblings, 2nd generation’s Na-Eun...
