In 2010, I was probably really sad. I’m okay now (promise), but as a closeted kid firmly in the throes of high school, life wasn’t easy. Luckily, I’d started working and had enough month-to-month to support not only my physical Netflix subscription, but the new, fancy streaming option, too. It’s easy to forget, but 2010 Netflix streaming wasn’t anything like it is now. Options were scarce, though in terms of finding myself in horror, there was enough between the two subscriptions to introduce me to an entirely new world of genre voices I’d never encountered before.
I certainly hope your 2010 was better, but whether it was good, bad, or a bonafide nightmare, here are some of the best of what 2010 horror had to offer you’ve likely forgotten about. Even better? They’re all currently streaming online.

On March 15, a horror film is leaving Netflix that fright fans should scramble to see — just not alone, as Stephen King warns. The Autopsy of Jane Doe is a highly unusual shocker about a mysterious corpse that causes problems for a pair of father-son coroners. Their postmortem produces baffling clues to her origins that they will have to make sense of before her curse can take over their lives.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter director André Øvredal tackled this startlingly original story that Stephen King compared favorably with Alien and the early work of body horror king David Cronenberg. The gruesome autopsy triggers a series of supernatural events, while also provoking a painful dissection of the coroners' personal history. Excellent FX complements equally great performances, the best of which is delivered by the eerily lively Jane Doe herself.

It is difficult to be a fan of a single streaming service sometimes. Netflix brings us a lot of greatness, and if it didn't, it would go out of business. But it does its job well, and we keep paying every month so that we get to see new goodies.
Unfortunately, we often have to say goodbye to greatness as well. Lucky for us, the series and movies leaving Netflix in the second week of March are not all fantastic. That leaves us room to talk about the ones that are highly entertaining.
And let's be real, though things might be leaving your favorite streamer, they are likely to find new streaming homes soon. We don't have that information, of course, as we only talk Netflix stuff here, but you can check our brethren and sisterthren at Show Snob, and that might have that information. That is at least a free plug for them.

2025 is in full swing, and with March just around the corner, it’s time for you to look ahead at the movies and series scheduled to depart Netflix throughout the month of March. The biggest notable TV series leaving is The Mindy Project, while hit films like Scooby-Doo and Love Again, among others, are also set to depart.
As always, Netflix’s library is constantly evolving. That means new titles are always on the way, but because Netflix licenses titles from big distributors, they’re not always on Netflix forever. When this license (or rental period) comes to an end, the movie or series leaves Netflix.
Note: This list will be constantly updated throughout February as we learn of more series and movies set to leave (typically 30 days before their departure). In the last few weeks of the month, Netflix...

Over the last 15 years, director André Øvredal has brought us the likes of Troll Hunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Mortal, and The Last Voyage of the Demeter. He missed out on the Stephen King / Richard Bachman adaptation The Long Walk and has said that not making that movie is one of the big regrets of his life… but he’s not letting that missed opportunity slow him down. Deadline reports that Øvredal is teaming up with Paramount and Walter Hamada’s 18hz on a new horror project – and while we don’t know the title yet, we do know that the the film’s cast includes Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys: Ride or Die), and Lou Llobell (Foundation)!

You don't always have to agree with Stephen King, but when the master of horror recommends a film or series, you should, at the very least, hear him out. Moreover, the author's horror-related opinions rarely miss, and he often rallies for overlooked genre gems like "The Autopsy of Jane Doe" and John Griffin's gripping sci-fi horror series "From," which you might not have heard of. In the past, King has also taken to X/Twitter to (rightfully) dunk on certain genre entries, including sharing his opinion about the worst horror film he has ever seen or beloved blockbusters he walked out of as an adult. Recently, though, King took to Instagram Threads to recommend a critically maligned Apple TV+ series starring Billy Crystal, writing:
"Before (Apple+): This show has a creepy Exorcist vibe, and Billy Crystal is very good. Short and scary episodes."
"Before" is currently standing at 32% on...

Do you think there might exist a time when every single Stephen King novel or short story has been adapted for the stage or screen? It sure seems like it, not that I'm complaining! Deadline Hollywood recently revealed that another adaptation is in development, this one based on King's "Autopsy Room Four," a short work included in his Everything's Eventual collection.
According to the outlet, Autopsy Room Four will be directed by up-and-coming British filmmaker Ranjeet S. Marwa, whose previous short film, The Man Who Loved Flowers, was inspired by some of King's works. He also directed Spring Lakes and Dig Me No Grave, both of which have been picked up by distributors.
"Autopsy Room Four" was initially published in one of King's limited-edition collections in the late 1990s before being added to Robert Bloch's Psychos anthology. Then, in 2002, it was published as part of Everything's Eventual.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe is one of the scariest, most impressive supernatural horror movies of the last ten years. Directed by Andr vredal, whose career has been mostly focused on horror and dark fantasy, and starring Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch as a father-son duo of coroners in great performances, it's surprising to those who love it how this film remains relatively forgotten. It had generally favorable reviews and, back in 2017, prolific novelist and horror mastermind Stephen King implied some intriguing comparisons when commenting on the movie.

The hit indie video game Bendy and the Ink Machine is coming to the big screen in a film adaptation, and there are already exciting updates about the project. Initially released in 2017, Bendy and the Ink Machine is a survival horror puzzle game that casts the player as retired animator Henry Stein who is drawn into the world of the paranormal thanks to a mysterious Ink Machine. While the project was rather small, the game became a smash hit thanks to its crisp gameplay and unique, cartoon-inspired visuals.
Across the game's five chapters, the lore of the Bendy universe is explored, and that depth is one of the many reasons players come back again and again to enjoy the frighteningly original game. Bendy and the Ink Machine quickly blossomed into a merchandising juggernaut, and it was followed up by 2022's Bendy and the Dark Revival. With video game movie adaptations...

Horror movies have been with us for a very, very long time. This genre, despite inducing shock and fear among the viewers, is extremely popular, and starting with Alfred Hitchcock, some directors have made careers by making horrors. George Romero, John Carpenter, and Wes Craven are considered classics, while today, we have a series of new, young directors who are great in the genre.
And since we’re writing this in a period of year when horrors are even more popular than usual, we have found a very interesting report that has seemingly determined the scariest horror movie of all time based on objective scientific criteria.
If you want to know how the guys at Science of Scare determined this and which horror movie actually won the prestigious title, we advise you to stick with us until the end as we are going to reveal absolutely everything you need to know.

Stephen King often takes to Twitter (I'm never going to call it that other thing) to give us timely movie and series recommendations, highlight under-the-radar gems, or simply express the joy of reading a good book. As one of the world's greatest authors, King intimately understands the inner workings of the horror genre, including themes that work best to provoke the human imagination and induce anxiety with the help of a sustained suspension of disbelief. The writer's horror-related recommendations have always been top notch; a few years back, King praised a 2016 supernatural horror film on Twitter and advised us to not watch it alone:
"The Autopsy Of Jane Doe: Visceral horror to rival Alien and early Cronenberg. Watch it, but not alone."

At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Recently, there have been casting announcements for a movie called Primate, which is being directed by genre regular Johannes Roberts and is part of Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount. Now, Deadline has broken the news that another Hamada horror project that’s moving forward at Paramount has gotten another genre regular, Andre Ovredal, to sign on as director.
Ovredal will be directing this other film from a screenplay written by Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess. Donohue previously directed and co-wrote the 2013 found footage horror film The Den and wrote and directed the TV series The Unknowable.

Director André Øvredal has set up his next horror project, with Deadline reporting that Øvredal has signed on to direct an untitled horror movie for Walter Hamada’s 18hz Productions.

Gary Dauberman (Salem’s Lot) will also produce the untitled horror movie.
Via 18hz Productions, Hamada is slated to produce several mid-budget horror films for Paramount Pictures per year. Other projects in the works include Primate and Familiar.

From mad scientists to unintended mutations, nuclear monsters were the darlings of horror in the atomic age. And it makes sense. After all, America was deep in the heart of the Cold War scare (officially starting in 1947). The idyllic facade of the 1950s, picket fences and apple pies, concealed a constant undercurrent of anxiety and fear that the world would end in a nuclear war.
So with atomic power always at the forefront of consciousness, it makes sense that the movies of the time would feature monsters born of atomic fallout. At the same time, man was taking to the stars for the first time, with space exploration opening up a whole new frontier -- and a whole new set of fears. Between aliens from the stars and mutants from our world, a new genre of atomic monsters took over. And while the Godzilla movies would go on to become by far the most famous,...

The autopsy in The Autopsy of Jane Doe Autopsy reveals dark secrets of Jane Doe's past, intertwined with Salem witch trials history. Andr vredal crafts a smart thriller with art-house horror vibes and jump scares, though the thematic depth of The Autopsy of Jane Doe is just as impressive. Jane Doe's powers emerge from brutal torture, seeking revenge on those who wronged her.
The 2016 supernatural horror film The Autopsy of Jane Doe explained the story of one of the most complex witches in horror history. In the dystopian future, a group of youths partake in a wildly popular, and very deadly, competition that's become a major source of entertainment. Sounds like "The Hunger Games," right? Well, that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about "The Long Walk," Stephen King's nasty 1979 novel published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Now, I'm not saying "The Hunger Games" is a rip-off of "The Long Walk," but there are definitely major similarities — which is probably why Francis Lawrence, the helmer of several "Hunger Games" movies, has been hired to bring "The Long Walk" to the screen.
Lawrence is by no means the first filmmaker attached to this project. At one point, the legendary George A. Romero wanted to turn "The Long Walk" into a movie. Later, Frank Darabont, who directed the Stephen King movies "The Shawshank Redemption," "The Green Mile," and "The Mist," was attached to helm. Eventually, like Romero,...

Earlier this year, Shudder renewed The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs for a supersized sixth season that was designed to make sure Joe Bob Briggs would be an even more consistent presence on the streaming service throughout the year. Normally, a season of The Last Drive-In would see Joe Bob hosting double features every Friday for ten weeks straight. This season has taken a different approach, having Joe Bob host a single movie every other Friday. Following a special Roger Corman double feature on March 15th, season 6 officially got started on March 29th – and Shudder has just announced that the season is going to wrap up with a special event: a six film marathon called The Last Drive-In: Nightmareathon!

There are always people who have watched some of the best and least-known horror movies in the world. But it's interesting how certain movies can fly under most people's radars despite being ground-breaking or just incredibly entertaining. This happens for a variety of reasons, ranging from the country where the movie was made and initially released to having controversies attached to it.
Fans of horror movies naturally look for hidden gems after watching all the classics. There are movies, like The Autopsy of Jade Doe, that are not completely obscure but often forgotten among bigger horror movies of its time. Others would likely have found a bigger audience had it been made in Hollywood and not countries with struggling cultural industries. The Brazilian horror movie Lacuna, for example, is as good as some of the best recent "elevated" horror movies that have reached the mainstream.

The highly anticipated adaptation of Stephen King's novel, The Long Walk, is finally set to begin filming in July after years in development. Director Francis Lawrence, known for The Hunger Games, will helm the project and is praised for his dystopian future film experience. The dark premise of The Long Walk, set in a dystopian America, adds to the list of upcoming Stephen King adaptations in the works in Hollywood.

Streaming services are the bane of my existence. It’s 2024 and there are so many options that it makes my head spin. Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, Paramount Plus, Prime Video, Peacock cover the main streamers but that’s not counting the niches. Like old cartoons? Check out Boomerang. Like anime? Then Crunchyroll is for you. But what about horror fans? Sure, Hulu has its “Into the Dark” label and Netflix is always releasing something horror-related (though I question the quality.) And the horror genre features multiple options with Screambox, Arrow Player, Full Moon Features, and even Tubi. But the subject of today’s spotlight is the best of them all, with a great Ui and wonderful selection of films, nothing can compete with Shudder.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe director André Øvredal's first American movie premiered to critical acclaim, paving the way for future successes. Actress Olwen Kelly's performance brought realism to the role of Jane Doe, portraying the corpse through yoga knowledge and skillful stillness. The film's chronological shoot order, real coroner interactions, and Black List script accolades contributed to its authentic and chilling impact.
The Autopsy Of Jane Doe is the first American-made movie by Norwegian filmmaker André Øvredal, following his breakout with the found-footage horror movie Trollhunter. The Autopsy Of Jane Doe tells the story of two coroners, a father and son (Brian Cox & Emile Hirsch), called in to examine the body of an unidentified woman (called Jane Doe) to determine the cause of death as well as her history. However, when they begin the autopsy, they start experiencing supernatural phenomena that lead to a night of terror.

A trailer for Prey has just arrived online – and no, we’re not talking about that Predator movie that was just released a while back. This is a new movie called Prey, which Vertical will be giving a theatrical and VOD release on March 15th. It seems kind of soon to be sending another movie called Prey out into the world, but clearly Vertical disagrees. Ryan Phillippe (Shooter), Emile Hirsch (The Autopsy of Jane Doe), and Mena Suvari (American Beauty) star in this “nature run amok” survival thriller, and you can check out the trailer in the embed above. A poster for the film can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Hollywood has been trying to adapt Stephen King's novel 'The Long Walk' into a film since 1988, but it has faced numerous setbacks and changes in directors. Francis Lawrence, known for directing the Hunger Games movies, is now attached to direct The Long Walk and is very excited about it. The story of The Long Walk is set in a dystopian future and features a deadly game where teenage boys have to walk above a certain speed or risk being shot, making Lawrence a suitable choice for the film due to his experience in directing post-apocalyptic settings and working with ensemble casts.
First published in 1979 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, Stephen King’s novel ‘The Long Walk’ has been the subject of Hollywood lore since 1988, when Night of the Living Dead director George Romero was first approached to adapt the book into a feature film. The legend of Dracula is explored from a new angle with The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log,” the seventh chapter in Bram Stoker’s influential novel.
The film’s home video release includes an audio commentary with director André Øvredal and producer Bradley J. Fischer, among other special features.
Here are eight things I learned from the Last Voyage of the Demeter commentary:
1. The Last Voyage of the Demeter spent 21 years in development.
Phoenix Pictures acquired the rights to the film, originally titled Demeter, over two decades before the movie made its way to the screen.
“It’s been a solid 21 years since my producing partners, Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer, and I, optioned the screenplay that we adapted into this film,” Fischer explains at the beginning of the commentary.
“And I’ve been part of it for something like three years, I think,” adds Øvredal.

Five years after the Conjuring Universe entry The Nun wracked up almost $366 million at the global box office, a sequel finally reached the big screen on September 8th. At the start of this month, The Nun II was given a digital release (you can get it at This Link). Now Deadline reports that the movie will be streaming on the Max service just in time for Halloween! The Nun II will be available to watch on Max as of October 27th.
The sequel didn’t replicate the box office success of the first film, but it still did quite well. As of this writing, The Nun II has earned over $257 million worldwide.
The Nun II is directed by Michael Chaves from a screenplay by Akela Cooper and the writing duo of Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing (The Autopsy of Jane Doe). The film has the following synopsis: 1956 – France. A priest is murdered.

Consisting of five segments, Southbound (2015) is a horror anthology movie that saw direction under numerous creatives: a filmmaking collective called Radio Silence directed the first segment, and the last. Filling the void was Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, and Patrick Horvath. And within each story, talented thespians perform to their greatest extents, emitting heartfelt screams that will echo in your head long after an initial viewing.
While there are dozens of well-known examples of filmmakers making more grounded anthology films — take Jim Jarmusch with Night on Earth (1991) and Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) — most popular projects of this ilk are categorized as horror films. Just look at Tales from the Crypt (1972) and Creepshow (1982), for instance. You've undoubtedly heard of those, if you haven't seen them outright. But the same can't be said for Southbound.
The film at hand flew drastically under the public radar upon release, and its popularity has remained rather stagnant ever since.

After debuting in The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys (2002), American actor Emile Hirsch found himself cast as the lead in numerous Hollywood productions throughout the following decade. He garnered widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike thanks to his work in Sean Penn's magnum opus Into the Wild (2007). Those two became frequent collaborators in the following year, both appearing in Milk (2008) by Gus Van Sant.
Those are the two most acclaimed films of Hirsch's career. But less hardcore audiences may associate Hirsch with films such as The Girl Next Door (2004), Lords of Dogtown (2005), and Alpha Dog (2006). Released in consecutive years, all three films featured Hirsch in the lead role, and they really ran the gamut of genre. Girl Next Door is a romantic comedy, while Alpha Dog goes down as a crime drama. They both hold up wonderfully today. But throughout those well-known releases, Hirsch has appeared in...

Five years after "The Nun" became the biggest movie in the history of The Conjuring Universe, Valak the demon nun is back for more. That's right! After being caught in development and, no thanks to the pandemic, delayed for a little while, "The Nun II" is finally upon us, with Bonnie Aarons returning as Valak and Taissa Farmiga suiting up once again as Sister Irene to fight the evil being in the lord's name. Let's get ready to rumble.
It's clear that Warner Bros. has no plans on ending this franchise any time soon, as "The Conjuring 4" and a TV series set in the universe are already in the works. So, does "The Nun II" contain any teases of what's to come? Does this sequel contain a post-credits scene of some kind? ConjuringVerse sequel The Nun II sets out to atone for the biggest sin committed in 2018’s The Nun: an emphasis on atmospherics and lore over the sinister scares that made Valak (Bonnie Aarons) an instant fan favorite in The Conjuring 2. The Nun II dials up the fear factor, wasting no time establishing the merciless nature of Valak as it takes the “more is more” approach to everything from set pieces to mythology. It makes for a livelier entry that stumbles in its excess.
Set four years after the events of The Nun, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) now lives the quiet convent life as she works hard to put Romania behind her. Helping to distract her is newcomer Sister Debra (Storm Reid), a rebellious young nun who’s taken to Irene’s unwavering patience. Director Michael Chaves helms this surprisingly clever ninth installment in The Conjuring Universe, and his third at-bat for the horror franchise created by James Wan just over a decade ago. With a story by recent genre genius Akela Cooper — and a script co-written by her, Ian Goldberg, and Richard Naing (“The Autopsy of Jane Doe”) — this smartly crafted sequel-to-a-prequel marks a long-awaited upswing for Warner Bros.’ steadily declining demonology epic.
The exposition-heavy whodunit isn’t much scarier than past installments, and it may not mark a permanent about-face for a franchise that’s been struggling since “Annabelle: Creation” (2017). But “The Nun II” proves an invigorating Second Coming for the returning cast painfully let down by the first “The Nun” (2018) — and a redemptive triumph for The Conjuring’s merciless Mother Superior,...

While horror movies don’t always have brutally bleak endings, some of the genre’s cruelest twists have been so dark and shocking that they left viewers utterly devastated. While horror movies often have killer opening scenes, it is infamously tough for the genre to stick the landing. If a horror movie ends on a hopeful note, this is likely to be satisfying for mainstream audiences but will also sap the preceding story of its intensity. Meanwhile, if a horror movie offers viewers no hope, it stays true to the genre’s dark heart but risks alienating its audience and making the entire enterprise seem pointless.
Luckily, this hasn’t stopped some filmmakers from pulling off endings that make the entire movie feel like a waste of time. These horror movies feature twist endings that aren’t just nasty but are so ingeniously bleak that they cast a dark shadow over the entire preceding plot.

In the wake of failing to recoup its budget with just $15 million worldwide at the box office, Universal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter has now been surprise-released at home.
On Digital, you can rent the film for $19.99 or purchase it for $24.99.
Directed by André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), this latest Dracula movie leaves the comedy of Renfield behind for a classic, Hammer-style horror movie at sea. The film is an adaptation of a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel, known as “The Captain’s Log,” which has never been adapted like this before.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter is unfortunately another financial misfire for the Universal Monsters, which have been largely unable to find box office success in recent years.
Universal has been having a hell of a time reintroducing audiences to the classic titans of the genre,...
