Regardless of their medium, stories have captivated humanity throughout history. Our obsession with shocking twists, dramatic characters and plotlines, satisfying revelations, and lessons learned proves their existential necessity to cope with the things we do not know or understand. Netflix's latest docuseries, The Kings of Tupelo: A Southern Crime Saga, dives into the bizarre, true story behind the 2013 presidential assassination attempt — highlighting the damaging result of replacing reality with more interesting narratives.
The show details the soap-opera-esque life of Paul Kevin Curtis, an Elvis impersonator consumed by body-part trafficking conspiracy theories. In three parts, viewers get to see his unshakable pursuit of justice, leading him on a path of personal and political rivalries, jail time, and becoming a major suspect for the infamous 2013 crime. With conflicting perspectives from Curtis, his family, and his enemies, The Kings of Tupelo uncovers the unexpected truth that eventually clears his name.

In Cold Water: The Shelter Bay Mystery is Prime Video's short (but definitely not sweet) true-crime documentary that dives into the murky depths of Laura Letts-Beckett's suspicious drowning in 2010. Director Trish Neufeld, known for her darkly comedic and personal documentary Dancing with Mom, objectively investigates the claims and conviction of Laura's husband Peter, who was charged with her murder.
Through interviews with Peter, Laura's family and friends, testifying witnesses, and law enforcement involved with the case, audiences come to question what really happened. Is Peter telling the truth about Laura's death being a tragic accident? Or is the prosecution uncovering a callous man's plot to kill his wife? Inconsistencies in Peter's story, evidence of his more sinister side, and a theory that the legal system unjustly arrested him for a crime that never happened at all make this series a chilling watch, no matter who you believe.

‘Cross,’ ‘Bad Sisters,’ and ‘In Cold Water’ bring a wave of crime titles to streaming this week.
How are we feeling, America? One thing voters can be thankful for after the final results of the 2024 U.S. presidential election is that there will be no further political ads on top TV channels or streaming services, and that’s a gain that all audiences can agree on regardless of affiliation.
The onset of a new week also means a new set of TV and streaming premieres. Some networks were holding back big premieres to avoid competing with election coverage, and I’ve compiled my usual list of the best titles to stream this week below!
